Success is more treacherous than failure, bringing dangerous attention, and potentially unbeatable foes.
Kat beat the bad guys and scored a pile of credits deep enough for her to fill a kiddy pool and go swimming in it. What she didn’t expect was for the mastermind of her plight to survive, as well as do her a favor: she removed her from the Arcology, and enrolled her in the GroCorp corporate college. She knows the Arcology, but this is a chance to earn enough credits to set her family up for life.
But people are disappearing, and betrayal lurks around every corner. Kat is out of her depth, and everyone is playing for keeps. Only by relying on every erg of power she’s managed to scavenge from the Tower of Somnus does Kat even begin to stand a chance.
What if the power she earns comes at a price that isn’t hers to pay?
A lifelong fan of Fantasy and Science Fiction, I usually spent my nerdy energy creating overly elaborate homebrew RPG campaigns. As it became harder and harder to juggle schedules for a half dozen players, I eventually made the logical choice and just cut them out of the picture entirely.
Now I write novels. They whine a lot less about critical failures.
Or don't. I mean, if you found the antagonists in the previous story frustratingly shallow, this takes that next step and makes the protagonists too stupid to see the obvious. Also, the alien "consensus" is a big pile of crap.
I'll make my notes public if you want to see my growing disdain for the "plot". One star. What a disappointment.
Tower of Somnus 2 left be a bit conflicted. The plot, character, and world drew me in. I really want to know how things will end. It is just that the trigger that started the whole event felt off. Why does such a recording exist (even more so in that you can apparently organize meetings in the game which are much more secure)? Why would Exe and his crew get involved in stealing it - because it did not feel like just a job by a rival company? It did not help that some sections were a bit boring, causing me to page past a few chapters both in and out of the game. In other words, a good read, but it left me wondering at a few places...
I knew better, but I was bored and ran out of choices.
So I wound up with this. When everyone is deceitful, when everyone could care less about the rules, that is when all the twists and turns are pointless and obvious. This is boring because it is easily guessed. Plamann has reached the point of "rinse and repeat" when it comes to plotlines.
The story feels like a cheap nook-off of what made the first book great need more diversity or a grander link to the next book not that sad victory we got.
Also if your going to name a book series after some make seem more important it lost it shine from book 1 and felt more like a plotline that was trying to stay relevant.
This book deserves 4.25 stars. I had to give it over 4.0 stars but it’s not really a 5 star book. That’s not to say it’s a bad book. No it’s really good. The thing is it’s the beginning and perhaps the middle that aren’t as entertaining as you might want them to be. Perhaps it’s just because they don’t compare to the end. Finish the book that’s all I will say. It’s worth it. It’s actually better than the first book in the series but it does have some flaws. I have to say this the MC does not advance fast enough. It honestly makes a little sense now when you go back and think about statements made by certain characters. Remember her and her tower allies are specifically running a three-man team so that they can receive better benefits as they progress. The problem is you rarely if ever see those better benefits pop up. Why is it that every time in this book when she finished a dungeon she only got one attribute point. That flies in the face of the idea of completing the dungeon with 3 people, as opposed to 5 or 6 for better rewards. You’re not getting a better reward now. If you’re just going to get one attribute point randomly assigned for completing a dungeon, you’re better off randomly completing it with more people saving you time and effort. I don’t know if this was an oversight by the author or maybe something that will be rectified later in the book. Now you also have to deal with the fact that this progression does seem slow beat one dungeon get one attribute point that’s horrendous especially when she doesn’t clear many dungeons in a book. Another inconsistency we’re told humans have not climb far in the tower. We’re given the impression that she’s gone far by reaching a floor. She gets two in this book but then we’re showing people who’ve gone beyond that. How far beyond that I won’t spoil because that is a spoiler for the book but they’ve gone well beyond what she has so this is really nothing. However, despite all this, the book is good, especially the latter, half of the book the story really picks up the ending phenomenal. It’s the beginning that isn’t as good as it should be. I’m hoping in the third book in the series, the author addresses many of these issues. In the meantime, you should enjoy what you read here.
Message to the author:
Spoiler, alert, spoiler, alert. I always write a letter to the author so that they know some of the issues I had with the book was a good or bad. Overall, I thought this was a really good book that ending with the infiltrator phenomenal the fact that you double down on infiltrators even better. I mean I was already shocked to see that we had an infiltrator on our team but to discover that we had an infiltrator in the corporation. Wow to discover we had info trade tours in multiple corporations that is even more intriguing. I think the end of the story saved this book. Not that it was bad, but it just wasn’t entertaining. When they got to a dungeon, I just pretty much wanted to know what was the attribute going to be at the end. Not the fights weren’t entertaining they just weren’t something that cared about. They already knew the solution. They already knew what boss they would face, so why should I care. I do have a concern, though why are the three of them going into these dungeons supposedly to receive better rewards and it doesn’t appear. They’re getting anything great out of it. One attribute points per dungeon completed that doesn’t seem like a lot. Why wouldn’t they just do those same dungeons with six people and get that same random attribute point. I was shocked to hear that someone in the human race has reached floor 18 that makes the question why I sent that person literally ruling the world. Just thinking about how strong they would be. Wouldn’t they just take over everything I also do think the main character is advancing a little too slow. They only get to the fourth floor that’s it then I have to wonder how long is this really going to drag out for a block how long is it going to take to get to the really good juicy fighting that I never expected. I was glad to see another alien race finally make it to earth but I wanna know when will she touch the stars hopefully. I don’t want her to stick around on earth forever. I’d love to see this plot resolved, and then have her be the representative for the people. Turn the planet around, become a dungeon, diver fighter, whatever. But then I think will how long will it take realistically in terms of books and it looks like the store with dry about perhaps too long then. In essence pacing is what I’m concerned with because I see how slow she seems to be developing and I wonder how long is it going to take for her to develop I mean realistically she needs to hit level 24 well man that seems like how many books away
This book was so good, I really enjoyed it. It was good from start to finish, Cale plamann has some good series I like, but this tower of somnus might take the cake. Cale really did fantastic with this book, it surely shows how good his writing skills are.
I listened to the audio version so we're gonna be talking about the narration.
Andrea did super good with the narration, she seriously is one of my favorite female/male narrators of all time. I love her voice so much, she has so many voices at her disposal. Andrea performs so well, she probably is the only narrator I know that will redo a chapter over and over again until it's perfect, the dedication she has is mind-blowing. I feel she is the perfect fit for this book by a long shot. This narration is for sure a 5 star.
The characters just got better! I already thought they were good, but now I really like them. They got way more depth in this book, I felt a real connection with them. I also love the character bonding this book seems to have. Cale really brought home the bag when it comes to these characters. The Mc is even better, I do think in some situations she's kinda overdoing it, but besides that I love her. She is one of my favorite female mcs.
The plot is good, it had me intrigued and interested throughout the white book, I was so entertained when reading this book, the cliffhanger has me wanting so much more! This plot doesn't seem overdone or rushed or anything like that. I'm so amazed on how good this story was, I can't wait to see how it plays out!!!
This book was so good, I'm certainly going to be here for book 3, I recommend this book to the fullest.
This was not a perfect book by any means, but man did I have a blast reading it.
Pros: Introduction/expansion on more neutral/gray characters (like Belle, Jasper and his crew, Iris, Hestia, etc.) rather than just those who like Kat = good and those who don't = evil.
High octane pace almost the whole time, with events that felt significant and occasional times of resting to let the reader have a breather. Heists! Prison breakout! Mass mook murder!
More expansion on the alien relationships, and the reveal of at least a part of the stallesp plot. With infiltrators! And cloning tech but not done in a complete 'gotcha' way!
More expansion on Kaleek and the lizard alien (forgot his name), and their species, etc. I also appreciate that they view Kat as like this exceptional, great human who is honest and trustworthy as compared to the rest of the species, but we see that while she does put her faith and trust in a handful of people she loves, she is also willing to murder people for money lol. Even before she got into the whole saving humanity business. She also is quick to violence generally, has huge walls up (understandably), etc.
Cons: I thought the college setting was a really cool new perspective of the world, but it kinda got dropped before it really got rolling.
I appreciated that Xander sacrificed himself and was vaguely sad about it, but not nearly as emotionally affected as what I think the author was going for.
Overall a great continuation of the series, and I look forward to the next one!

This book is written like a really long action movie, and has some good moments. The idea of varying between the dark real world and dreamscape that helps the character progress in the real world is cool and kind of reminds me of Pan's Labyrinth, or the game Omori.
However, I realized that after two long books, I only have a vague idea of the characters personalities and motivations, and it sort of feels like there are three personalities: cool gritty action hero, monologuing villain, and hysterical side character.
Also, characters chuckle at really inappropriate moments all the time for some reason, and it feel like:
"Let's level up in the tower!" said person A. "My entire family may be killed by Gro Corp (A Wholy owned subsidiary of the deepstate)!" Person B chuckled. "Don't worry! We'll just level up faster. Also, I'm an alien so in my culture incest is ok." Person A Chuckled.

Wow Cale Plamann's Chiwaukee Nights is just as crazy good as Foundations book1 was. Andrea Parsneau, again gives us another Stellar 11 ⭐ performance! Needless to say our MC, Kat will never give up the fight whether it's in-game (The Tower of Somnus) or out-game. And she finds the faster she builds up her in-game stats, sometimes clearing a dungeon every night, that it just might give her the edge she needs to survive in the distopic world she lives in.
Here's a couple of quotes from the book that amused me. "Guns might be fun but knives are a girl's best friend."
"Don't interrupt your enemy when they're making a mistake."
WOW I'm not sure I can emphasize enough how good This book is. I am enjoying this series so much I honestly didn't want to stop to give a review, so I didn't. 😁 I finished this book and jumped in with an insatiable need to find out what happened. Yep finished the last book and now to sing this ones praises. I applaud the author for their imagination and for sharing it with us. This was another all day and into the night read. I couldn't put it down. I cannot recommend this book as well as the series enough. Do yourself a favor and get them all. You'll be so happy with yourself.
Some holes are starting to show in the cyberpunk chapters, for example, I haven't checked a bunch, but the timeline seems off somehow. I know there was a couple references to things happened in x number of days, and then later I'm pretty sure it was referenced as being x weeks. But whatever, that's excusable. The stakes also seem a bit weird, but that's mostly excusable because of how rushed the characters were in planning and executing the missions.
The tower part starts to drag a bit, it's used more as an excuse for allow characters to talk then anything, which is a bit sad compared to the potential I thought it had in the first book.

Possibly even better than book one , Kat is now established as a samurai and is moving up the food chain , whilst in the tower she , Dorrik and Kaleek are making steady progress upward. On earth it has become known that the senior corporate executives are in collaboration with the stallesp to sell out humanity and only public exposure will slow the process , this will involve breaking into a corporate tower and stealing a recording of the conspirators , to say this is risky is an understatement and all our friends are unlikely to survive.
Good meaty installment. It's so good when RPGLit authors provide you with quality AND quantity. They are neither just through out a thought stream nor a short vignette out of a several dozen story series. This felt worth it.
Also, I loved the "Previously on.." intro at the beginning of the book. I wish all books did that. And the author did a good job of providing reference to when you last saw a character when they re-entered the story so that you aren't spending that whole section thinking "Now who was Andrew (or w/e) again?" No major flaws stand out. Well worth an audible credit.
The overall idea is good but the execution is lacking
I am really enjoying the story, but I have to call BS on one faction being ablento full on support the evil humans while the other is impotent. For mining rights on a random world amongst many? For some intergalactic organizatiom that's existed for thousands of years, this seems so contrived and weak. There needed to be a lot more to explain why this situation came about. As it stands, it's kind of a joke, despite how cool the story is.
The tempo of this series has been absolutely relentless. It feels like one thing after another just goes wrong and Kat has to come in and save the day. From levelling at night to fighting during the day, it never stops.
I absolutely love it though and this has to be one of my favourite series ever. I will admit that sometimes, it is very gory but it is still great. Sometimes, it’s also just plain sad.
Plamann has written a great followup to the first in this series. Thinks get kicked into high gear and they never really let up. Kat continues to grow. I appreciate how her growth feels realistic, not ridiculous. She's not all powerful and she's often scraping by the skin of her teeth.
Great pacing and incredible action. Quite a crazy climax. Can't wait to read the next book!
This is a series that keeps getting better as it goes. The first book caught me off guard and this one blew all of my expectations out of the water. Truly a series to watch and something i know i’ll be rereading for years to come. Cannot wait for the next one.
I love everything about Kat being in The Tower of Somnus, however, almost everything else not related to the tower felt like a drag. I just couldn’t find myself interested in Kats awake like and found myself constantly skimming those chapters to get back to a tower chapter. The last 10% did a much better job at catching my interest in that regard though.
Kat basically is now a total murder hobo but just female. She is NOT an infiltrator, she is assault because nothing about her actions are like a infiltrator. The story is out right boring now because its super predictable. Also the CW drama needs to go, it artificial. NO ONE talks to each other like that, especially families.
So I wanted to like this book because I genuinely liked the first but in that one and in this one the author has a habit of skipping things and not showing what happens. End of the St Louis job? Skips to the tower. Meeting Jasper at college? Skip to the tower. It's really annoying and I stopped reading after that.
The characters, situations (considering this is fiction 😄), and reactions are realistic. There was a pretty big surprise at the end, and then both triumph and potential tragedy. I'm really hoping the person made it!
I also only needed to submit a small number of grammar reports for typos. 😊
Too much of the book focuses on action scenes so that they just pile on each other. Less character development and satire in this book vs 1st one. Still pretty good, however.
An amazing adventure that ends with a bit of a cliffhanger. It's not really a stand alone book. The story is better if the book before is read first. Looking forward to the next book.
An excellent sequel—characters become deeper and more developed, the plot expands appropriately, and overall an entertaining and attention-keeping read. Looking forward to the next book!
Good story, okay read. Decent characters and world, interesting litrpg elements, but the story chopped and limited. Also, while fun, it’s simple and straightforward. If food, it’d be fast food.
The ideas were there, but there was a series lack of detail regarding the adventures in the tower. Not to mention that 3/4 of the book was about real life and its conspiracies. But I'm really starting to like the Aliens.
