Rate this book
James Allen, a 19th century English writer, is best known as the author of
the best-selling, inspirational classic, As a Man Thinketh. For over a hundred
years, this timeless work has motivated readers to lead more successful,
effective, and peaceful lives. James Allen is also the author of approximately
twenty other books, that are lesser known but equally powerful. The Wisdom of
James Allen II is the second book in the Laurel Creek James Allen Wisdom series.
It combines 3 of his classic works in one volume and includes: Light of Life's
Difficulties, Above Life's Turmoil, and The Life Triumphant.

James Allen was an advocate of ethics in all the areas of our lives. His
goal was to reveal universal spiritual principles to the masses in order to
relieve people of their suffering, empower the individual, and thus uplift
humanity. Allen's works focus on teaching personal responsibility, finding
the cause of personal problems within our own selves, and revealing how each
of us can harness our personal power to master our own destinies. The wisdom
contained in his works provides a valuable guide for life.

The Wisdom of James Allen II is the second book in a projected 6-volume
set of The Complete Works of James Allen published by Laurel Creek Press.
Each Wisdom of James Allen volume in the Laurel Creek James Allen Wisdom
series groups 3 to 5 of James Allen's short works into one book. Edited for
contemporary readers by Andy Zubko (compiler and editor of The Treasury of
Spiritual Wisdom), the works contained in each volume are complete and
unabridged. For clarity, Zubko's editing features breaking down each
chapter into subcategories, and rendering obscure or archaic words, phrases,
and punctuation into modern usage. James Allen often used the generic
masculine, as was the common practice of his time. This was retained in
order to remain true to his voice.

The first book in this series, The Wisdom of James Allen (ISBN:
1-889606-00-6) contains 5 Classic Works, including: As a Man Thinketh, The
Path to Prosperity, The Mastery of Destiny, The Way of Peace, and Entering
the Kingdom. The Third book in this series, The Wisdom of James
Allen III (ISBN:1889606-08-1) contains 4 Classic Works, including: Out from
the Heart,
Byways of Blessedness, From Passion to Peace, and The Heavenly Life. Book 3
will be available by Spring 2003.

Allen was 15 when his father, a businessman, was robbed and murdered. He left school to work full-time in several British manufacturing firms to help support the family. He later married Lily L. Allen and became an executive secretary for a large company. At age 38, inspired by the writings of Leo Tolstoy, he retired from employment. Allen — along with his wife and their daughter, Nohra — moved to a small cottage in Ilfracombe, Devon, England to pursue a simple life of contemplation. There he wrote for nine years, producing 19 works. He also edited and published a magazine, "The Light of Reason".

Allen's books illustrate the use of the power of thought to increase personal capabilities. Although he never achieved great fame or wealth, his works continue to influence people around the world, including the New Thought movement.

Allen's most famous book, As a Man Thinketh, was published in 1902. It is now considered a classic self-help book. Its underlying premise is that noble thoughts make a noble person, while lowly thoughts make a miserable person.

Following his death in 1912, his wife continued publishing the magazine under the name, "The Epoch".

I am continuing on my James Allen inspirational journey. How awesome that after one hundred years, his words have found new seekers. I found this book to be both inspired and enlightened, and at times long-worded and hard to read. There were passages that jumped out at me as being way ahead of their time in terms of truthfulness, and then there were some passages that sounded somewhat parochial and self-righteous. Over all, I find James Allen no doubt enlightened and in tune with the Universal Truth. But I think if he had written his books today, there would be some allowances for human frailties.
