Annabel's brilliant friend Charlie was a bit of a mad scientist. And although the first explosion he caused at Jerrard's lab in Norfolk had been a minor affair, this last one threatened to get him sacked.
Sam Jerrard refused to listen to reason. He resented Annabel's impassioned plea on Charlie's behalf and misinterpreted it, too, in more ways than one.
So Annabel stowed away in Sam's car to get him alone and have one last go at persuading him to change his mind. Then the chemical mix became truly volatile!
Sheila Ann Mary Coates was born on 1937 in Essex, England, just before the Second World War in the East End of London. As a child, she was moved from relative to relative to escape the bombings of World War II. Sheila attended the Ursuline Convent for Girls. On leaving school at 16, the convent-educated author worked for the Bank of England as a clerk. Sheila continued her education by taking advantage of the B of E's enormous library during her lunch breaks and after work. She later worked as a secretary for the BBC. While there, she met and married Richard Holland, a political reporter. A voracious reader of romance novels, she began writing at her husband's suggestion. She wrote her first book in three days with three children underfoot! In between raising her five children (including a set of twins), Charlotte wrote several more novels. She used both her married and maiden names, Sheila Holland and Sheila Coates, before her first novel as Charlotte Lamb, Follow a Stranger, was published by Mills & Boon in 1973. She also used the pennames: Sheila Lancaster, Victoria Wolf and Laura Hardy. Sheila was a true revolutionary in the field of romance writing. One of the first writers to explore the boundaries of sexual desire, her novels often reflected the forefront of the "sexual revolution" of the 1970s. Her books touched on then-taboo subjects such as child abuse and rape, and she created sexually confident - even dominant - heroines. She was also one of the first to create a modern romantic heroine: independent, imperfect, and perfectly capable of initiating a sexual or romantic relationship. A prolific author, Sheila penned more than 160 novels, most of them for Mills & Boon. Known for her swiftness as well as for her skill in writing, Sheila typically wrote a minimum of two thousand words per day, working from 9:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. While she once finished a full-length novel in four days, she herself pegged her average speed at two weeks to complete a full novel. Since 1977, Sheila had been living on the Isle of Man as a tax exile with her husband and four of their five children: Michael Holland, Sarah Holland, Jane Holland, Charlotte Holland and David Holland. Sheila passed away on October 8, 2000 in her baronial-style home 'Crogga' on the Island. She is greatly missed by her many fans, and by the romance writing community.
Explosive Meeting is perhaps the worst title in CL's extensive collection and also one of her few, failed attempts at humor, at least in my opinion. Yeah, I get it, the heroine and hero are both chemists and lab explosions are an integral part of the plot but come on.
Written as a light farce in the same vein of thirties screwball comedies, it ended up being rather unfunny because of how pathetic the heroine really is, letting her entire family of big brothers, and her bumbling, always getting into trouble, platonic friend ride roughshod over her, not to mention the hero, who was rather rude to her throughout the entire story, even going so far as comparing her figure unfavorably to the OW fiancee pretty much at the same time he is doing his love declaration.
One episode in particular that has the heroine hiding under the bed while the hero and his fiancee make out was so cringe-inducing. What kind of Alpha CL hero hides the woman he is supposed to be smitten with under his bed because he is so scared of the OW making a scene? Any HPlandia hero worth his salt would just stand there smugly, with this "yeah, I actually, totally, meant to do that" expression on his face, and "what are you going to do about it?" attitude. I kinda miss those assertive, arrogant, heroes. This one was weak and I did not believe that he loved her or would have gotten together with her if the OW herself hadn't broken things off.
"Explosive Meeting" is the story of Annabel and Sam.
A VERY shoddy comedy of errors.
A scientist heroine, a madcap friend, an infuriated lab owning hero, chemical blasts, a crazy family, a possessive fiance, a scheming secretary, loads of misunderstandings, random bursts of anger and passion, minimal romance and the book ends. I giggled once or twice, and then things just got absurd.
Re Explosive Meeting - which should be titled The Antics of Annabel - CL switches to comedy in this one and it isn't a bad effort. The h is a research tech working for a big agriculture science lab in her hometown. Her sorta adopted brother keeps blowing up his research lab and the h takes it upon herself to save his job - not without a lot pleading on his part tho.
The h is 23 and used to managing her 6 older brothers. She has fiery red hair and is also the despair of her mum, because her brother's are all rugby playing Alpha's and they taught the h all about the manly arts of fighting and competition.
Her sorta adopted brother is also the youngest brother's best friend, so the h is used to tagging along with him but there is no romance between them. He is very much the absent minded scientist (which is why he keeps blowing up his lab,) and the h spends a large amount of time in the book trying to set him up with another girl - while trying not to make it seem like, (as the h herself puts it,) finding a lost puppy a good home.
The h and H meet at the annual company dance, when the SAB drops his contact lens and the h and H wind up tripping over him and falling down together. The h is hoping to get a chance to talk the H out of firing the SAB, but the H (who owns the company they all work for,) is flanked by his icy secretary and a glamorous high society blonde.
The h sees a chance to get an in when the secretary goes to the ladies room. She tries to pump her for information and get the secretary to support the SAB, the secretary is rather hostile until she realizes that the h is advocating for the SAB and not trying to hook up with the H. She tells the h not to try, the H is notoriously impartial to any opinions but his own.
The H asks the H to dance later, and he questions the relationship between the h and the SAB pretty closely. The h is the cynosure of all eyes when the H dances with her, he NEVER dances with anyone but the tea lady and the wives of his executives, so the h is a big exception. The night ends with the h going home with SAB and unsure of how much progress she has made in saving his job.
Then SAB blows up his lab again, this explosion is much worse than any other and he gets fired. He begs the h to get his job back, he knows she is great at managing difficult people and if any one can do it, it is her. He was on the brink of a big research breakthrough, but since he is fired, someone else will get the credit. The h agrees to try and sets off for London to beard the H in his den.
She winds up waiting for most of the day, the H won't see her and it isn't until the blonde from the dance shows up and is very rude to the secretary that the secretary agrees to help the h get to see the H. She tells the h to hide in the H's car and unlocks it for her. The 37 yr old H makes of habit of going to his secret cottage retreat alone at the weekend and it is about an hour away from the h's village. Maybe the h can convince the H to reconsider if she can talk him into it there.
The h hides in the back and really irritates the H when he finds her once he arrives at his retreat. He tells her to either walk six miles to the pub to call for a ride or be prepared to spend the night on his sitting room couch. One punishing kiss and a few threats of slaps later, the h finds herself on the sofa and the H has calmed down enough to offer a ride to catch the bus in the morning.
We find out the H likes to paint and photograph things too, he goes to the cottage to indulge in his artistic side and he keeps the location secret to avoid people - he likes being on his own- though he does have a bit of a ladies' man reputation, the h finds herself admiring his talent. When the h wakes up the next morning the H makes her breakfast and the h also admires his domestic skills. Then the H informs the h that neither can leave, his car won't start and he had to call the mechanic out.
The h and H get a big shock when the blonde woman and her dad show up, the H makes the h hide and she doesn't want to - until the H tells her he will give SAB his job back. Things go to epic comedy level when the h has to hide under the bed while the blonde tries to seduce the H on top of it. Finally the H gets the blonde and her dad out of there and we find out the H has proposed to the blonde, but she hasn't answered him yet.
The H loses his temper again when he finds out his car has been tampered with. He blames the h for the sabotage but the h is really innocent of the charge and has no idear who did it. She does think the H ought to be labeled with a government health warning for his kissing though.
The h manages to get back home and then she has to deal with SAB when he proposes over the expensive dinner the h made him take her on. The H and the blonde are there too, but the h manages to ignore him and the blonde never notices people beneath her social status. SAB thought he should propose marriage by way of thanks for the h getting his job back. The h is pretty amused and decides to take a rain check and find a different forever home for the clueless man.
The h, SAB and H all go back to work. The H and SAB are now working together as the H is his new lab partner. The h spends her time palming off SAB to a new girl and avoiding the H while thinking about his crazy kisses. Then the SAB forgets he has to give her a ride home when her car is getting serviced. The H winds up taking her and there is more kissing. With the h indignant that the H has no right to go around kissing people when he is engaged.
There is a bit of family drama with the h's oldest brother and his wife and the h wonders at how the H can be such a split personality, kissing the h and being nice while marrying another woman for her money. as that has been hinted at by the gossip mongers . The h is at work one day when the blonde shows up again and it is obvious her and the H are having a very heated discussion.
The h has long since figured out that the H's secretary sabotaged the car and tipped the blonde off to the cottage location. She confronted her with it and realizes the secretary is in love with the H. Out of sympathy for her feelings, she agrees to not tell the H about it.
That all changes when the blonde looks at the h and screams "RED HAIR" and demands the H fire the h. The h runs off and cries a little and then finishes her job for the day and goes home. Vowing all the while that if the H fires her over a crazy blonde with a prejudice against red hair, she will see him in court.
The H shows up at her house that evening, the h is alone and making dinner. She finally lets him in, though she isn't inclined to talk with people who want to murder her. He claims he will murder her more if she doesn't. Then the H accuses her of sending a letter to the blonde about the weekend at the cottage and the h is aghast that he could think that of her. She likes him and his lethal kisses a lot, but she loses her temper and tells him off when he admits he thought she did it to break up the engagement. Then he blames the SAB, he is wildly jealous of him and the h, the h tells him it was his secretary, who was trying to save him from the blonde.
The H finally gets it and he explains that he drunkenly proposed to the blonde under pressure from her father. He needed the father's support in signing a new business deal and the blonde seemed really nice at first and it was time he considered marriage. The blonde kept him hanging for an answer but quickly revealed how rotten she was in character, and the H couldn't afford the dramatics while the business deal was being done.
Then the H met the h and fell into love at first sight, he began ignoring the blonde, he wasn't inclined to be her lap dog and was letting things die down there when the letter came and he finally told the blonde off. He tells the h he loves her and when she won't say she loves him back, he kisses her until she does. Eventually she tells him she loves him and HEA.
This one is a very light-hearted comedy, not at all in CL's usual style and the romance is pretty mild. There is never anything but kissing, the h is far too busy arranging things and getting into scrapes to angst a whole lot - so if you want the usual CL dark drama, this isn't the book, but it is fairly funny and an amusing read.

I really liked the depiction of the heroine's large and loving family (although out of six siblings, we really only get to see 3 of them). The friendship between her and the pseudo other man is funny and I bet C.Lamb had a lot of fun writing this beautiful, brilliant idiot. I didn't really feel the love from the hero and to be honest cannot envision these two living happily ever after. The age gap between these two is real, even though it's barely acknowledged. I can see the difference in life experience being a major problem in the future. That said, it was a really entertaining read.
this was a big disappointment ! i was so excited at the start. it was damn funny n amusing, i had a huge laugh n cud not wait 2 c what happens next. lots of things happening, lots of drama but the relationship bet sam n annabel was the big disappointment. it lacked CL's usual intense, hot-scorching, filled of angst kinda relations. instead of sam being super jealous n possessive, he seemed rather indifferent. he did nthg whatsoever out of character; like thrashing charlie i dunno or trying 2 get annabel away from him!! instead he remained engaged all throughout the book 2 another woman, which happens 2 be a stunning blonde named denise ! at one point, he even asked annabel 2 hide upstairs bcoz denise was here, n annabel had 2 hide under the bed eventually while sam n denise were smooching on the bed lol !:P it's a funny book but not great as romance
As a fan of a brainiac, scientist H, I had high hopes of this story but it felt really lacking. I couldn't take to the H, Sam Jerrard, although the h, Annabel, and more particularly her parents and six brothers were an appealing set. The h's sort of boyfriend was your classic absent minded scientist (and creator of explosions in the workplace, about which any right thinking employer would have serious issues). There was too much about all the other relationships and insufficient h/H time for there to feel like there was enough connection and grounds for love. I've got another half dozen CLs due back to the library and on the current run of performance it's going to be an effort to get through them in time.
Falls short of being "explosive." H/h seem to spend very little time together in the book, with just a few interactions and a couple of kisses. Hero is 38yr old former scientist now business owner who recently proposed to his harpy girlfriend. Heroine is a 23yr old, youngest of 6 with 5 older brothers, who works in the chemistry labs of the H's company. She has a close male friend chemist who keeps blowing up the lab, leading to his firing and then the h trying to convince the H to rehire him.
I liked this although the not-really-other-man kept getting in the way. Also I was appalled at the experimental protocols the company used with explosive materials. I worked with peroxides for a few years and no way no how does one do anything that could cause an explosion. It makes a good story though!
Entertaining story and feisty heroine, October 2, 2013
This review is from: Explosive Meeting (Paperback) Entertaining story and feisty heroine
MY THOUGHTS: Spoilers ahead. This was a very light hearted read for me. The heroine was spunky, had a lot of character and was funny. The hero was typical rich and handsome although his occupation as a scientist was different from the usual books I read of businessmen etc. But then again he owned a business so I guess he was a businessman LOL. The back cover pretty much tells you what the story was all about. I just felt that the book was too short and I wanted it longer and have an epilogue just to see what the other people thought about the leads getting together and even the heroine's families' reaction to the leads getting together. the other characters such as Charlie was a funny one even though the author's description of his character/personality was just too outrageous. Little glimpses we have of the other brother Patrick was also funny. I wish they would have show more of her family life dynamics because it was heartwarming to see them all interact together. I was a little confused about the hero's secretary's motives. I honestly thought she was slightly much older/or that she did it just to get the two leads together. I think that would have been much better than for the other reason the author gave. This was an enjoyable book to read, light hearted and albeit a little too short. It's not a book I would re-read over and over again but I would re-read it maybe several times in the year.
