The dynamo team behind Llama Destroys the World continue their delightful and hilarious ghostly hijinks in their early reader graphic novel series, perfect for fans of Elephant & Piggie and Narwhal & Jelly.
Fitz and Cleo
- Siblings (the closest) - Ghosts (the friendliest) - Best friends (the tightest) - Cat owners (Mister Boo approves...of Cleo) - And now bandmates (only the gnarliest!), writers (watch out Hemingway!), filmmakers (auteurs), artists (the list goes on?!)...
These two know how to keep spirits high and the good times rolling! In their first-ever second book, join the most adorable apparitions this way of the afterlife through ten gut-busting creative farces, including flexing their storytelling muscles with ghost stories, songwriting, and directing their first film.

First sentence: Cleo: Grrr. Sigh. Fitz: Don't like the book? Cleo: No! I LOVE the book. That's the problem! The characters in them have so many awesome adventures! Daring escapes! Epic battles! Fitz: What's the matter, then? Cleo: Why can't I ever have adventures like these? I want to climb misty mountains! Find magical swords! Get cursed by witches and turned into a rat! Sail across great seas and battle mighty monsters! Where is MY fantastic adventure, Fitz?
Premise/plot: Fitz and Cleo are about to....wait for it, wait for it...get creative in their newest graphic novel early chapter book adventure. This one has dozens of little adventures leading to one big production....but the creative journey is anything but easy....
My thoughts: My absolute favorite story is WRITE NOW. I think it should be required reading for anyone who has ever thought--even for thirty minutes--that they want to be a writer. I also loved, loved, loved the story ONCE UPON A TIME.
I enjoyed the friendship between these two ghost siblings. They are cute, adorable, sweet, and anything but scary. Mister Boo (the cat) is still around though not the star of the show in this second book.
Fitz and Cleo are sibling ghosts. Cleo wants adventure! Fitz is a bit more scientific in his approach to... life? But he wants to encourage Cleo's creativity so they decide to make a movie. Needless to say - it's a big hit! A good choice for fans of Elephant and Piggie, this is a great introduction to graphic novels for younger kids.
I read this one with my seven-year-old and he absolutely loved it. He got to read a few of the "chapters" each night before bed, and what's a better story before bed than a ghost story? These two ghosts are the cutest thing since the word "BOO" and their adventures are entertaining and whimsical. The imagery was also well done, the text easy to read, and the panels easy to follow.
The the relationship between these two ghosties! This book was a hit with my 7 year old and I enjoyed reading it along with them. I like how it is broken down into different situations and the humor is light and cute!
This book was pretty good. I love Fitz and Cleo and their cat. The concept is clever and witty. But I would have preferred a different plot style. In this book, Stutzman creates a handful of short scenes that don't necessarily go together... I would have rather seen a longer plot arch.
This was such an adorable book. The nurturing sibling dynamics of Fitz and Cleo is so refreshing to see, since there are quite a few children’s books out there with siblings where the siblings absolutely hate each other. I will be reading the last book of this series.
Such a fun celebration of different ways to be creative. My daughter read it twice in one day-once on the drive home from the bookstore and once to me.
This (like the first in the series) is just perfection! Cute ghost siblings, an adorable cat, adventures, humor . . .what more could you want?! The 8&9 year old boys agree!
Do you remember when the ability to read first happened to you? Have you seen that realization dawn on the face of a child? The feeling of knowing you can read is nearly indescribable. In that moment for you and others, the world shifts. It is brimming with endless possibilities and discoveries.
Some of the best books for early readers have engaging characters, characters who connect with us and charm their way into our collective hearts. Their everyday lives are akin to adventures. What they say and do is liberally enlivened with humor.
Author Jonathan Stutzman and artist Heather Fox have created an early reader series with sibling ghosts who are the best of friends. We were introduced to the duo in Fitz And Cleo (Henry Holt and Company, May 25, 2021) and earlier this year their second book, Fitz And Cleo Get Creative (Henry Holt and Company, March 8, 2022) was released. The exuberance of these characters will have you grinning from ear to ear and wishing to join them.
