Spirit Sight by Ross Hightower is the first novel in the Spirit Song Trilogy. Mythic in scope, yet intimate and engaging, this is a story that will draw you in and won't let go.
Thank you, NetGalley for the advanced copy of Spirt Sight.
I really enjoyed the world building and cast of characters in Spirit Sight. The magic system was incredibly unique and the lore was really interesting.
I am looking forward to the next installment, but have to be honest that I struggled with the pacing of this book. It was a lot all at once and I felt it could have benefited from deeper character development upfront instead of being thrown into various political, religious, and social issues.
Overall this was a good read and I did have fun with it!
Spirit Sight is a captivating fantasy novel. Extremely immersive. The worldbuilding is carefully crafted. The author has made sure to create a unique and enticing world.
I enjoyed the pacing of the story. It takes time to introduce everything, but this is a crucial part of every fantasy novel. In Spirit Sight, this is executed well. It doesn't feel rushed or slow. The book also has a detailed section for characters and other 'bits' related to the story. There is even a map you can access. So, you will have a whole magical world ready to be explored on those pages.
Hightower perfectly balanced the plot with the characters. Sometimes, when there is such expansive lore, other aspects such as the characters fall short. But the characters are well-developed. Minna is the first character that the author introduces and one of the most memorable one. A perfect heroine.
Spirit Sight reminded me of those fantasy books that I loved to read before bed when I was a teen. It brought me back to those years. The kind of story that you wish to watch on TV sometimes. A perfect blend of magic, myths, action...and love.
Thank you NetGalley for a chance to read Spirit Sight.
I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. I loved Minna and Alyn’s character development and the paths they follow in this book. I loved the magic system, the multiple POV’s, the world building, everything. I can’t wait for the next installment.
Spirit Sight is book one in the Spirit Song Trilogy
The book is based on sisters Minna and Alyn, they each development Spirit Sight and that can mean death if the Empire finds out.. after Alyn is captured and imprisoned by the Inquisition, Minna vows to save her sister and use the gift she was given! Alyn is in a tough position, use her gift to hurt and hunt her own people or face death! The alternating POV's are easy to follow but my favorite character is Minna, she is the driving force behind this story. The magic system is beautifully described and feels organic to the novel. I felt immersed by the world building descriptions and time flew by while I was reading! The ending left a brilliant setup for book 2!
The book is a perfect first novel setup of a new series, creating backstories, establishing locations and bring the reader into the world of the Empire. The story is fantasy but doesn't feel like a type of story I have read before. The plot is interesting and new and that keeps me engaged. I am definitely looking forward to reading more of this story!
It’s a beautiful story of a young woman navigating a world full of hatred and lack of acceptance for uniqueness. I feel that Minna’s struggle against people who form opinions about witches and lan’and based on myths and rumours without ever trying to know them would resonate with a lot of people as it did with me. As always Ross Hightower creates a world full of magic and mystery, resistance and rebellion in Spirit Sight and weaves an amazing, inspiring tale!
Thoughtful stuff. Pulled me in from the first chapter with a protagonist who refuses to back down. Minna’s struggle against the Empire is about rebellion, about identity, survival, and finding strength in places she never expected. The magic system feels fresh, and the way spirits interact with the living is well done. Every page made me more invested in Minna’s journey, and by the end, I wasn’t ready to leave. Looking forward to seeing where this series goes next.
This story is perfect for lovers of all things magic, myths, action & love.
The pacing takes you straight through the world building in what feels like a journey of adventure & discovery, from our fearless heroine Minna to Alyn, they are the perfect combination to guide me through, and I can’t wait to see what happens next!
I’ve dipped my toes into epic fantasy and I can’t believe I’ve been missing out on so much!
Picked up "Spirit Sight" on a whim and was pleasantly surprised. The story is engaging, and Minna's character growth is compelling. A solid read that kept me entertained throughout.
OMG, "Spirit Sight" is amazing! Minna is such a relatable character, and her journey is super inspiring. The magic and adventure kept me turning pages all night. Can't wait for the sequel!
Spirit Sight is a fantasy novel that is book one of a trilogy. I bought this book as Ross Hightower is a Wisconsin writer and I believe in supporting local authors. Fantasy is not the genre I typically read. However, I enjoyed it immensely.
It is set in a world where witches with magical powers are hunted down and captured by
Inquisitors. These witches are feared and hated, but a certain sect of them is respected and used to hunt down other witches. In an interesting twist, the kingdom also needs witches to fight a war.
The protagonist is Minna who must make sense of her burgeoning powers while also saving her younger sister Alyn when she is taken. She goes on a journey where she picks up people to help her and more and more enemies.
Hightower has a fully flushed out world that is highly imaginative. I enjoyed the complexities of the characters and their development. For example, Harold is an inquisitor who has decided to help Minna. His emotional journey goes beyond just trying to be good. And the witches must get beyond just not hating Harold.
There are many characters in this novel. The author keeps things straight by titling the scenes with the focus character. I had my favorites, but each page kept me turning to see what would happen next and to see what would become of these characters that I was instantly engaged with.
This is a well written book, good for any genre and a great read for lovers of Fantasy.
I really enjoyed Sprit Sight. This is a wonderfully written and beautifully told fantasy novel. The author does a superb job building an expansive world having multiple cultures and languages and populating it with believable, compelling characters. At its heart, it’s an age-old tale of an oppressive empire ruled by religious zealots who seek to eradicate the beliefs of the people it conquers. Told from multiple POVs, the main story arc is about two sisters, Minna and Alyn, who belong to the Alle’oss people. Both are special during a time when being special is dangerous. Neither knows how special until Minna begins to struggle with concealing her ability to connect with the spirit world and tap its power. The empire calls girls like Alyn and Minna witches and is engaged in an inquisition to find and destroy them. Minna’s power draws the inquisition to their small town and Minna’s and Alyn’s idyllic world is shattered when one of the girls is captured and carried off leaving the other to find her sister before it’s too late. I look forward to reading book II.
There’s something special about a fantasy novel that doesn’t just transport you to another world but makes you feel like you belong there, living and breathing alongside its characters. Spirit Sight by Ross Hightower is exactly that kind of book. The first installment in the Spirit Song Trilogy, this novel is a stunning blend of magic, survival, and deep emotional stakes that immediately hooks the reader. It delivers not only a well-crafted world but also a story filled with raw humanity, sisterly devotion, and the looming specter of oppression.
A Story Rooted in Emotion and Struggle
At its heart, Spirit Sight is the story of Minna Hunter, a young woman living in the remote village of Argren, part of a vast and corrupt empire. Her quiet life takes a dramatic turn when she wakes up one morning to find small orbs of light dancing in the trees. What seems like a moment of beauty quickly turns into a life-altering revelation—she has spirit sight, a gift that allows her to commune with spirits. In the empire she lives in, this gift isn’t something to be celebrated; it’s a crime punishable by death.
From the very beginning, Minna’s struggle is one of survival, but not just for herself. Her younger sister, Alyn, soon develops the same ability, forcing Minna to make a choice—stay hidden and safe, or risk everything to protect Alyn from the ruthless forces that seek to control or destroy people like them. This bond between the sisters is the beating heart of the novel. Their relationship feels real, filled with moments of tenderness, frustration, and fierce loyalty. It’s not often that fantasy stories center on sibling relationships so profoundly, and it’s one of the strongest elements of Spirit Sight.
A World That Feels Lived-In and Dangerous
Ross Hightower’s worldbuilding is immersive, painting a vivid picture of an empire ruled by fear and superstition. The Inquisition lurks in the shadows, always watching, always hunting for anyone who dares to wield power outside their control. The fear of being discovered is constant, adding an undercurrent of tension throughout the novel.
Yet, despite this oppressive atmosphere, there’s a quiet beauty in the world Hightower has created. The spirits themselves are mesmerizing, depicted as shimmering presences with their own unique personalities and purposes. The magic system isn’t just a convenient plot device—it feels organic, deeply tied to the land, the people, and the forces that govern them. The way Minna and Alyn learn about their spirit sight, slowly unraveling its mysteries while staying one step ahead of danger, makes for a gripping read.
What makes this world stand out even more is that it isn’t built through heavy-handed exposition. Instead, we learn about it through Minna’s experiences, through the way people react to her and her sister, through the hushed whispers of villagers who fear what they don’t understand. The pacing of this discovery is handled masterfully, giving us just enough information to stay engaged without overwhelming us.
A Story That Builds in Complexity
At first glance, Spirit Sight may seem like a straightforward fantasy about a girl discovering her powers and being hunted for them. But as the story progresses, it becomes so much more. The novel isn’t just about running and hiding—it’s about fighting back, about understanding what it means to wield power in a world that wants to keep it out of the hands of those who truly need it.
Minna isn’t some all-powerful hero who easily overcomes every obstacle. She doubts herself, she makes mistakes, and she has moments of deep vulnerability. This makes her journey even more compelling. She’s not just trying to save her sister—she’s trying to understand herself, her past, and what the spirits truly want from her.
Meanwhile, Alyn’s storyline is equally gripping. Captured by the Inquisition, she faces a harrowing choice—submit and become a weapon for those who fear her kind, or resist and face death. Watching her navigate this impossible situation adds another layer of tension to the novel. While Minna is struggling on the outside, trying to find a way to save her, Alyn is fighting an internal battle just as intense.
A Fantasy That Feels Real
Beyond the magic and adventure, Spirit Sight stands out because of its emotional depth. The way it explores themes of power, oppression, and survival feels incredibly relevant, despite being set in a fictional world. The sisters’ bond is the emotional core of the novel, and their sacrifices for each other make every victory feel earned and every setback feel devastating.
The prose itself is beautiful without being overly flowery. Hightower writes with a clarity that makes every scene feel immediate and visceral. The action sequences are tense and cinematic, while the quieter moments are filled with emotion and introspection. There’s a perfect balance between the two, making for a reading experience that never feels slow but also never rushes through important moments.
Final Thoughts – A Must-Read for Fantasy Lovers
Spirit Sight is the kind of fantasy novel that reminds you why you fell in love with the genre in the first place. It has everything—rich worldbuilding, compelling characters, emotional stakes, and a magic system that feels both mysterious and deeply ingrained in the world. But more than that, it has heart. It’s a story about love, loss, and the courage it takes to stand against forces much greater than yourself.
For readers who love immersive, character-driven fantasy with a strong emotional core, Spirit Sight is an absolute must-read. Whether you’re drawn to its beautifully crafted world, its deep and relatable protagonists, or its gripping plot, there’s something in this book that will resonate with you.
With this being the first in the Spirit Song Trilogy, I can’t wait to see where the story goes next. If the rest of the series builds on what Hightower has done here, we’re in for something truly special.
A fantasy action novel that I think would be ideal for young people and adults alike. Very much an engaging read that had phenomenal world-building and intricate character development. Not once did the author, Ross Hightower, lose the thread--which is admittedly a tough thing to do in such a dynamic story.
I really appreciate the QR code in the beginning. It added a fun layer to the world and the reading experience to have access to maps and more. I really appreciated the depth Hightower went to keep the story as original as possible, while also following some clear fantasy tropes--it kept things exciting but accessible. It was refreshing to have such an interesting take on witches and magic, etc.
I look forward to where this story will go next. I'm glad that Hightower has already set us up to expect more. I have faith that the next two installments will be just as exhilarating and pleasing as this one.
I was finally able to get a copy of this book in Australia. I found it to be a great read with excellent character development in the book by the author. The teaser chapter for Argren Blue (the next book) has got me ready to purchase the book and read it. Thoroughly recommend the book to anyone interested in this genre.
Spirit Sight’s story draws you in from the first paragraph and never lets go. The characters - both men and women - are drawn with great insight, and grow as they work through the challenges they encounter in their dystopian society. Excellent read.
I was given a free copy of Spirit Sight Volume 1 for my participation in a book tour hosted by Black Phoenix Book Tours.
Spirit Sight Volume 1 is a YA Epic Fantasy novel centered around Minna and her sister Alyn. I feel like the author’s synopsis is a little misleading. There are so many characters and POV’s so while the story is centered around Minna and Alyn there is a lot of history and a backstory that is explained through other characters.
The story as a whole is interesting and I’m intrigued, but I didn’t feel drawn to Minna and her chapters until most of the other POV’s started to fade away. I had a really hard time connecting with her story from her POV. She’s also an incredibly frustrating MC. Once she was away from her home, she constantly made decisions that put herself and everyone helping her at risk.
I loved Aron, Deirdre, Keelia, and Harold’s chapters. Each of them brought so much to the table and made the backstory really interesting.
In my opinion, the book is really about an evil empire with 3 factions who essentially “work together”. The Empire, the Seidi, and the Inquisition. There is religious and political corruption that’s weaved amongst the different factions. There is manipulation, in fighting, and plotting all within the factions and against each other.
As with all things, power and fear is the root of this story. There is a caste system and those at the top want to keep their power. So the 3 factions became a means of enforcement that are now used to maintain the status quo.
Within all of this, we find Minna and Alyn who are Alle’oss and essentially not allowed to have “magic” because the Empire, Seidi, and Inquisition only want women in the highest caste systems to have magic. The Alle’oss are looked down upon and the fear of what could happen if they were allowed to be powerful basically drives the whole system to call for their extermination.
It was a good story, but there was no cliffhanger so I don’t feel drawn to immediately start reading the next book. I’m still intrigued and will most likely get around to completing this series. I’m just not sure when.
The world building was solid and there is a lot of potential here for book 2.
Spirit Sight is one of those books that lingers in your mind long after you’ve turned the last page. From the moment Minna Hunter discovers her ability to see spirits, the story grows with a richness that’s intimate and epic. Ross Hightower built a world that feels ancient and lived-in, full of danger, wonder, and the quiet strength of those who dare to stand against oppression.
Minna is the kind of protagonist I love—fiercely loyal, quietly determined, and unwilling to let the world break her. Her gift of spirit sight should be something beautiful, yet in the corrupt empire she inhabits, it’s a death sentence. Watching her struggle to protect her younger sister, Alyn, while grappling with her own fears and limitations made the book impossible to put down. And Alyn, though younger, has a presence that’s just as compelling. The dynamic between the sisters is so well-written, and their bond adds emotional weight to every challenge they face.
The worldbuilding is immersive without being overwhelming. The magic system feels natural, woven seamlessly into the story rather than explained in heavy exposition. The presence of spirits, the ominous reach of the Inquisition, and the dark secrets beneath the surface. The author didn't just create a setting—he put life into it.
The pacing is steady, with quiet moments of reflection balanced against high-stakes action. The emotional depth is what stood out the most for me, though. This isn’t just a story about magic; it’s about survival, courage, and the love that drives people to fight even when the odds seem impossible.
Spirit Sight is thoughtful, beautifully written, and filled with characters readers will genuinely care about. I can’t wait to see where this series goes next.
So this is a very massive book. The author has done a great job of world building here, including creating a history for his world. At one time the witches were very honored and well respected. But then an empire came and the witches fell out of favor. Bad rumors started about them..
And in a small village far from the big cities there lives a girl named Minna and her younger sister named Alyn. And then Minna discovered she is a witch. She can talk to these floating orbs of light. And this soon makes her an outcast. That is only the beginning of her trouble. Because no one can stand to be near these witches. They get this very uncomfortable feeling. And so its very hard to hide especially if you are untrained. Like poor Minna.
Now this all sounds great but I did have some trouble reading this. For one my attention kept wondering. Which is bad. I am unsure why but the plot, as detailed as it was, couldn't hold my attention all the way until the end. I think perhaps the obstacles that Minna faced seemed to impossible? And other parts with Alyn were very bleak too. And there was so much going on. Minna runs here, then there, then goes here and well that seemed to go on nonstop? She is a very well detailed character but she just didn't hold my interest. I am not sure why? But I didn't find myself relating to her or caring about her. Perhaps Minna was too good? Its pretty bad if you find yourself not caring about the main character, especially in a book of this length. Minna's whole goal was to save her sister but what about herself? That is what I mean by saying she is too good.
A Big-Hearted Fantasy Late in Ross Hightower’s splendid Spirit Sight, the first of the Spirit Song trilogy, the young witch Minna makes a breakthrough that is both thrilling and satisfying. On so many levels, this novel is about harnessing the reserves beyond the self as much as from within. From the time her sister Alyn was captured by the Inquisition, Minna takes a memorable journey where she comes to understand both the brutal forces in the larger world far outside the provincial confines of Fennig and the spiritual realm that often coalesced around her. Indeed, the explorations of the spirits have a wonderful allegorical quality, characterizing individual repression and openness. As the charming and nimble Aron says early in Spirit Sight, “The path to greatness is not made up of great moments. It’s made up of many small moments, tiny nudges, that seem so innocuous as they fly past. The trick is to know when , where … and what?” That means both Minna and the reader need pick through the delightful bits of the local Alle’oss lore and to take cues from the guiding, if unseen, presence of the witch Regan. Yet what really makes Spirit Sight soar is the humor and big-hearted spirit of the novel, whether it be through the conflicted inquisitor Harold or Alyn’s unsung caretaker Eckehart. The glorious exchanges between Minna and her sidekick Ulf provide comically cathartic relief even as the dangers and difficulties intensify. And that breakthrough Minna experiences during the climax points to more exciting adventures as the Saga continues.
I just finished reading Spirit Sight, the first book in a fantasy trilogy by Ross Hightower, and I'm still reeling from the experience! This captivating novel follows the journey of 13-year-old Minna, a young witch (or "saymann") living in a world where magic is feared and persecuted.
Minna's story is one of resilience and determination as she navigates a treacherous landscape of magic hunters, mysterious allies, and ancient secrets. With the help of her friend Ulf, Minna embarks on a perilous quest to rescue her captured sister, Allyn, and uncover the truth about her own destiny.
What I loved most about Spirit Sight was its richly woven world-building, complex characters, and multiple plot twists that kept me on the edge of my seat. The story is told through multiple perspectives, adding depth and nuance to the narrative. Minna's growth as a character, particularly in her mastery of magic, was inspiring and authentic.
The themes of sibling love, loyalty, and self-discovery resonated deeply with me. I appreciated the representation of LGBTQ+ characters and the subtle exploration of romance, which added a sweet and tender touch to the story.
Overall, Spirit Sight is an engrossing and immersive read that will appeal to fans of fantasy and adventure. I'm eagerly anticipating the next installment in the trilogy and exploring more of Ross's work. If you're looking for a compelling and magical read, look no further!
What can the struggles of two “bewitched” young sisters set upon by inquisitors on a literal witch-hunt in a land of corruption teach us about ourselves and our own world? The epic fantasy novel Spirit Sight shows the answer is “a lot.” The story echoes familiar themes of family courage, responsibility, injustice, corruption, intolerance of “the other,” and the abuse of power, themes that pull us into this foreign but strangely familiar world created by Hightower and Heim. Like famous stories of this genre, Spirit Sight highlights the journey of young people with superpowers who must venture beyond their “small” worlds to pursue huge quests. Like people in our own world who are “different,” young Minna and Alyn seem both blessed and cursed with their difference; we identify with them because their challenges make them human enough to elicit our empathy. And the quest to save their families and communities with bravery and determination attracts our allegiance and our concern for not only their safety, but their victory over opposing factions. These themes, and the tension between contending forces in Spirit Sight, will appeal to readers of all genres because from the opening pages, we know we are in the hands of skillful world builders who help us transcend our own boundaries without losing sight of reality.
Ross Hightower has written an epic fantasy first novel, which at over 600 pages is quite a read. However, don't let the length put you off as he has created an amazing fantasy world where you will lose yourself amidst spirits, witches and inquisitors.
The novel opens with introducing us to Minna, a young girl branded a witch in her community for her ability to see and communicate with the lan'and, spiritual beings. The pace picks up as the dawning realisation of her precarious position becomes clearer with the arrival of the inquisitor. The author does a great job of weaving together the different story strands although at times I did have to really focus to follow the characters and their place in the rather complex story. However the author has included a super useful reference page for the different characters at the back of the book.
There is such tension throughout which keeps you turning the pages as life unravels for Minna and she is forced into fighting to save her sister, channelling and controlling her developing spiritual powers as she finds friends and makes enemies. It is one heck of a journey and at the end, I was left glad that this is just the first part of a trilogy. I shall eagerly await the next volume.
Spirit Sight is a highly immersive fantasy novel! This book would be great for fans of Brandon Sanderson or Jeff Wheeler, or anyone who likes epic and high fantasy in general.
Hightower did a wonderful job world building, every choice that was made in this densely packed book was very intentional and in the end it was all perfectly curated to make sense by the end of the story. We follow a full cast of characters along their various journeys that all intersect, and all of the characters were fleshed out and added to the overall story.
Our main female character Minna is on a journey to save her younger sister Alyn, who has been taken by the Inquisitors and been accused of being a witch. The plot is also laden with social and political commentary and undertones throughout and it really hit right on time!
I had a good time with this book, when I had free time to read throughout the day, when I would pick it up, I would have a hard time putting it down because it was definitely fast paced and with every POV I had more questions and wanted to know what would happen next!
The book does end on a cliffhanger but thankfully the sequel is already out!
Full disclosure: I haven't quite finished the book yet, but this is the kind of fantasy that gets me excited. We've got a full-blown empire right at our fingertips, and our story encompasses every inch of it, both physically and socially. Not only is worldbuilding absorbing and seemingly flawless, the array of characters is varied and gives us a glimpse at multiple different ways of life, not excluding a rebellion, the heart of the religious organisation, and, of course, life in a disquiet village at the edge of the empire. Minna, the main character in our ensemble, is such a sweet, gentle soul, and I can't wait to finish this story with her.
Characters and world aside, Hightower's prose is rich, layered, and engaging. You don't realise how much you've read until you put the book down for an unrelated reason and discover you're several chapters farther along than you were when you picked it up. It's a genuinely enjoyable experience to read this book.
I was gifted a copy of this book and asked to post my thoughts.
Spirit Sight, Volume 1 is an immersive and emotionally rich fantasy that rewards readers who enjoy deep worldbuilding and character-driven stakes. Ross Hightower introduces us to Minna, a young woman whose ability to see and interact with spirits places her in constant danger in a world ruled by fear and religious authority. As her sister is taken and the threat of the Inquisition grows, Minna’s journey expands far beyond her quiet village into something far more complex, spiritual, and perilous.
What truly stands out is the balance between tension and warmth. The story is often dark, but moments of humor, loyalty, and unexpected compassion give it heart. Minna’s relationships—with allies, spirits, and even her enemies—add depth and momentum as she learns what her powers truly demand of her. By the end, the payoff feels earned and leaves a strong sense that this is only the beginning of a much larger saga. I highly recommend this book to readers who enjoy epic fantasy with emotional depth and thoughtful worldbuilding.
Outstanding world-building and complex, believable characters make Ross Hightower’s “Spirit Sight” a must-read for both YA and adult readers. This fantasy adventure transcends the genre with a tapestry of plotlines that come together in a way that’s nothing short of astounding. The overall picture reveals an entirely unexpected layer of story that only comes into view as part of the whole. Hightower fleshes out characters and makes them real to the reader in short order. Minna (in particular) wins the reader’s heart from page one, and we root for her through all her trials.
As if the prose and world-building wasn’t masterful enough, the author provides a QR code that takes the reader to treasure trove of maps and more. Just bravo! I purchased the entire set before I had even finished book one. Highly recommended.
I received a copy in exchange for an honest review.
Spirit Sight by Ross Hightower is the captivating first installment of the Spirit Song Trilogy.
This compelling fantasy novel offers immersive world-building, well-rounded, complex characters, and a unique magic system that sets it apart. The intricate plot is thoughtfully crafted, transporting readers to a richly imagined world. The story unfolds at a steady pace, allowing ample time to delve into the details of the characters and other essential elements, making even the most intricate aspects easy to follow.
Packed with action, thrilling adventures of two brave young girls, and significant revelations, Spirit Sight keeps readers engaged from start to finish.
Overall, Spirit Sight is an excellent choice for both young and adult readers. It's a standout addition to the fantasy genre, sure to leave a lasting impression.
If you like Wheel of Time you will enjoy Spirit Sight!
One of my favorite parts of this book is the magic system as it is unique from anything I have read before. I love how it feels like there is a spiritually component to the magic system.✨
I also enjoyed the dual POVs. I loved seeing how storylines would intersect at times & how it felt like a giant web. I really connected with the character Harold as he struggled with a life-altering identity crisis & works to understand the truth & what he wants to do in his future.🕸️
From the map, glossary, lore, world building, history, language (with in text pronunciation help which I love) & magic system; this YA epic fantasy will draw you in & keep your attention throughout.🗺️
I will definitely be continuing this series. I’ve already purchased the prequel so will be reading that next before I move on to book 2.📚
Spirit Sight by Ross Hightower. Thanks to @tide.phoenix.coffee for the ebook and the opportunity to review this
"Accept no one's definition of your life; define yourself".- Harvey Fierstein
In a remote village, on the edge of a corrupt empire, a little girl named Mina wakes up and finds a small orb of light to her delight she realises she is the only one that can see them and with that her journey begins.
We follow Mina as she discovers those that have Spirit Sight were once adored by those living in the village seeking help and seen as a blessing until the Mina discovers that those that commune with spirits will be given a death sentence by the Empire.
Im not a big fantasy reader. If I'm being honest, but I enjoyed reading this,it was fast-paced when it came to the world building and character building. I did enjoy it as someone who doesn't read much fantasy.
This was a fast, fun read that I was compelled not to put down. I debated 4 or 5 stars, but five I didn’t put it down went with 5.
It had the feel of a classic fantasy epic, but introduced characters, places, and groups at an easily digestible pace. Helping immerse the reader slowly into the complex world of Argren.
While familiar, starting in a far off farming village, the world ruled by an evil empire, the characters are unique and interesting enough to provide a compelling new story.
On the critical side, there are points where character monologues are obviously world exposition. But at a minimum they make sense. You learn of magic through the eyes of the main character, and I’m pleased she is not the classic I refuse to be a hero trope. While still coming off as frail and mortal.
I will definitely be working my way through this series.
