When a yacht blows up in the Newport Beach Harbor killing a California congressman, FBI Agent Beck Murray is reminded of another night ten years earlier when a mega-yacht caught fire. Then a rookie cop, he pulled popular teenage TV star Piper Nolan out of the water. He's never forgotten her terror or her rambling story, but the investigation was shut down before it even got started.
Now the current explosion provides a clue that leads back to Piper, Beck knows it can't be a coincidence. But Piper is even less willing to talk to him now. The former It Girl has hidden herself in the shadows. She has secrets and is clearly terrified.
Are her secrets twisted up in murder?Did she lie to him before? Is she lying to him now?
The danger heightens when another body drops. Beck needs to find a killer before anyone else becomes a target, including himself…and maybe the woman he's beginning to love.
Barbara's love of writing developed out of a love of reading. Growing up in an all-boy neighborhood, she spent quite a bit of time reading through her mother's large library, many of which were romantic novels. After graduating from the University of California at Santa Barbara, she went into Public Relations, but soon discovered that writing was her true passion.
Barbara was traditionally published for many years, then formed her own publishing company FOG CITY PUBLISHING in 2011 and has since sold over 10 million books! She has published 75 novels ranging from mystery thrillers to romantic suspense and contemporary romance.
Her book SUMMER SECRETS was a #1 New York Times bestseller! And twenty-five other novels have also appeared on the New York Times and USA Today Bestseller Lists. She is currently writing two ongoing series, a contemporary romance series set in Whisper Lake and a romantic suspense series: Off The Grid: FBI Series. She is also known for her bestselling Callaway Family Series, which offers up fourteen books and two novellas.
When Barbara isn't writing or publishing, which isn't very often these days, she is playing tennis, hanging out with friends and family in beautiful Lake Tahoe or reading books!

I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review. I would have handily purchased this book. I love this series and Barbara Freethy is one of my favorite authors.
While this is the 11th installment of the series, it can be read as a stand-alone. But I urge you to enjoy each installment as they are layered with content, and characters that leave you guessing until the very end.
Piper is a pastry chef who is dropping off her desserts for a party on a yacht. She knows the party is for a senator who used to be an actor for a show that she starred in as a child. Years had passed between her and the senator as she has quit acting but wanted to share a quick "hello". She left the boat and minutes later it had exploded. This terrified her not only because she was so close, but she had a similar experience seven years ago.
The FBI Agent, Beck, who questioned her, was also the police officer who rescued her years ago. He did not believe this was a coincidence but there were too many puzzle pieces to figure out how they fit. While Piper had no idea who would blow up the boat, she had her secrets and Beck knew she was hiding something. Piper did her best to help Beck but did not trust him to fill in the gaps. Danger was making its way to her and Beck and they were soon uncovering some answers to a potential investigation that intersected with the explosion. Piper was determined to get to the truth and Beck was equally determined to keep her safe.
I won't give away the ending but i can say that the story goes from zero to 60 in the first chapter and does not let up on the gas. It is high adrenaline, and you don't want to put the book down. Enjoy!!
There are 11 books in this series – each one can be read as a standalone. I’ve read several and encountered no problems skipping around.
FBI Agent Beck Murray and Piper Nolan, a former child actress-now bakery owner, are just middle of the road characters. I didn’t find anything extraordinary or fascinating about either and thought they both acted a bit juvenile for their ages. The romance between them was slow burn and “sort of” a second chance.
The suspense kicked into high gear from the start and showed real potential. While moving the storyline along at a fast clip, Freethy did a good job challenging readers with solving the case. There were enough suspects to keep readers guessing and the meshing of both political and Hollywood elements took care of the intrigue and entertainment.
I was really hoping for a real treat with this story. The blurb hooked me and I immediately pre-ordered. There were several areas where I felt the author could have added a little more depth for a better finale. However, it didn't turn out to be quite “da bomb” that I had hoped for. Not bad but not especially great either. Just meh!
Trigger warning: discussions of rape, drugging, and child abuse. First off, kudos to the author for showing how the cops are often bought off by rich people. And how illegal activities are forgiven by law enforcement (for the greater good).
As for the story overall, it was action packed from the get go. I really liked Piper, who is trying to get her own version of justice and wants to live a normal life but is bombarded with people (including her mother) trying to use her and force her back into the limelight. Beck has his own childhood trauma and coping issues that he keeps coming up against.
If you are ready for some intense action and a story that’ll keep you guessing, this is for you!
“Your moral code is a rarity in the life I’ve lived.”
Piper is a child actress, all grown up. She has been haunting Becks dreams since an I’ll fated night years ago, in which she disappeared as quickly as she appeared. Now they are reunited under the same but different circumstances and FBI agent Beck is not going to lose her again. Non stop action, romance, murder, deceit, secrets and lies… this is the wild ride that is Barbara Freethy! While this is part of a series it can be read as a standalone, but you’re going to want to binge read this entire wonderful, terrific series!
I love the off the grid series and this eleventh book is every bit as awesome as the rest of them. Agent Beck Murray is our male mc in this suspenseful, dangerous second chance romance thriller. It’s an intriguing and mystery read as Beck investigates the death of a congressman in a boat explosion which ends up leading him back to a previous incident many years before and leads him back to child actress star Piper. It’s a chilling, exciting and gripping read that grabbed me from the very start and just when I thought I had worked it all out the author throws a curveball twist out there and I didn’t get my answers till the end of the story. A Simply thrilling read!
I think I say this every time, but it amazes me how Ms. Freethy thinks to write such suspenseful, twists, and turns romantic books. I have to say I had no idea who the awful person was in this book. Piper had been a child and teenage star that got black balled in the industry. It had to be awful to go what she went through and grow into such a strong woman. The Hollywood crowd was so backstabbing and you couldn't trust anyone. Piper just seems to be in the wrong place at the wrong time now. She loves her sweet shop, but somehow gets pulled back into the Hollywood scene. I was glad that FBI agent Beck Murphy was watching out for her. I thought it was cute that he had a crush on her when she was acting on her tv show growing up. Beck was such a good man that looked out for his brother after their parents died, and he tried to take care of the good people in the world. This story was so exciting and suspenseful that I didn’t want to put it down. I strongly encourage you to read the book. I was given a copy of the book and voluntarily wrote a review.
Another great read by Barbara Freethy! I love the Off The Grid FBI series. In this story, it focuses on Beck and him trying to protect a child tv star that has now grown up, left acting, created a new life and becomes once again in contact with people in the acting industry who have hidden agendas. I enjoyed this story!
Piper is now a shop owner and doesn't want anything to do with acting anymore. But she is going after some.powerfulen and this is how she meets Beck again. He will do anything to help her even though she is now the target and this becomes suspensfulmtrying to figure things oit
Beck and Piper had met 10 years ago in another boat disaster. He rescued her from the water and she sent him to rescue her friend Juliette. When he returned she was gone. Beck is an FBI agent. Piper a former child star turned pastry chef. When another disaster brings them back together the story develops. I found it riveting, excitement and danger at every turn. The answers stay elusive until the very end, a true grand finale. Loved it!
Get ready for more than a little sensory overload. From edge of your seat suspense, to soulfully tempting romance, Perfect Target has it all. Piper and Beck go straight to the heart with scorching heat and an intriguing complexity that gets under your skin and sends chills up your spine.
Get ready for an adrenaline filled, twisty turny, intrigue filled gem! Oh so many questions from the past and the present woven throughout. There's action, Suspense and some romance scattered throughout these pages. The characters will grab hold of you and have you cheering them on. I love this series so much!
Barbara Freethy has done it again! I absolutely loved Perfect Target by Barbara Freethy, the eleventh book in her Off the Grid: FBI series. Barbara Freethy has once again delivered an incredible romantic thriller with Perfect Target. Each book in Barbara Freethy's Off the Grid: FBI series continues to get better and better. I have loved all the books in the series, but I think that Perfect Target is my favorite. Barbara Freethy has once again provided her readers with amazing characters; I love all the characters in Perfect Target! Who doesn't love hot, sexy men and strong, passionate women? I love how Barbara Freethy somehow manages to find the "perfect" heroine, who is a strong woman on her own, to balance out the career focused FBI agent. Perfect Target is filled with heartbreaking and heartwarming moments. I love the lighter moments where I find myself smiling and laughing out loud. My favorite moments are the ones that pull at my heartstrings that cause me to sigh, as I read the heartbreaking moments. Perfect Target is filled with such moments, and with so much emotion. It is filled with all those things that we have come to love and expect in a Barbara Freethy romantic suspense love story, especially the poignant and bittersweet moments that filled this page turner. Barbara Freethy continues to deliver all that and so much more. Perfect Target had me guessing throughout the story as to who was behind the thrilling events that took place in this story. The identity of the villain was truly a surprise when it was revealed. I could not put it down. I loved every moment on every page. I really enjoy how the book is told from the perspective of the main characters. I love getting the insight and feelings from the different characters. Barbara Freethy has once again proven that she is a master storyteller. Perfect Target is the story of Beck Murray, FBI Special Agent and Piper Nolan, pastry chef and former child actress. Beck and Piper originally meet seven years prior, when Beck worked for the harbor police and rescued Piper when she jumped in the harbor following a fire on the yacht she was partying on. Beck is now investigating the death of Senator Larry Brixton, following the explosion of his yacht. Piper was the last person to see Larry alive when she delivered desserts to his yacht for a party that he was to have that evening. Beck meets with Piper asking why she did not hang around following the explosion. After attempts are made on Larry’s bodyguard and Piper’s lives, Beck takes her to his home to keep her safe. Together they work together to discover who is behind the Larry’s death and the attempts on Piper’s life. Piper and her friends are looking for information to discredit men who have taken advantage of young actresses. Piper finally decides to trust Beck enough to share everything with him. Both Beck and Piper share secrets with each other that they have never told anyone before, Beck told Piper what really happened to his parents, and she tells Beck what really happened on that yacht seven years ago. As they continue to spend time together, things change between them and that scares Beck. I loved how the relationship between Beck and Piper changes them, from mistrust and that they are both willing to take a chance at love. I love the surprise plot twists that fill this page turner which Barbara Freethy includes in all her stories. I really enjoy the poignant and bittersweet moments, the plot twists and the surprises that I have come to love and expect in Barbara Freethy's books and Perfect Target did not disappoint. My favorite part is how Beck’s brother, David reveals that as a teen, Beck had a poster of Piper on his wall. I love how all the loose ends get tied up and how hearing a song causes Piper to remember events from her past, putting her life in jeopardy once again, but revealed who was behind all the events in the book. I love all the characters and the way Barbara describes the locations in and around Los Angeles. Reading Perfect Target felt like a family reunion, I loved catching up with the other FBI agents in the series. It was really an incredible romantic thriller, and I loved every page. It was an amazing story and I highly recommend it.
This is the 11th installment in the Off the Grid series but can be read as a standalone.
WOW!!! I have read the entire series and this one may be my favorite so far! This story will grab your attention right from the start. Piper Nolan was once a famous teenage tv star but after a boat explosion seven years ago that she was involved in, she changed her entire life. Now she owns her own bakery and tries staying out of the limelight. Until she makes a dessert delivery on the yacht of a US Senator who used to play her father on a famous tv series and minutes after leaving, the boat explodes.
FBI Agent Beck Murry is feeling a sense of deja vu as he arrives at the scene of the boat explosion that killed a US Senator. Agent Beck used to work as a cop with the port police at the same harbor where years seven ago there'd been a yacht fire and he'd help rescue several people, including tv actress Piper Nolan. Now her name is involved in another boat fire and he's wondering if there could be a connection.
This story had so many twists and turns that you couldn't stop turning pages to find out what would happen next! I fell in love with Beck and Piper. The chemistry between them was so intense! Barbara has written another amazing story and I can't recommend it enough! This is a definite must read!!!
The path this book took was unexpected in a number of areas. I thought Piper put herself in situations without much thought of the consequences. I also felt like she had more faith in her "friends" than she should. She was more tolerant of her mother and former agent than they should have expected.
Beck lost all aspects of being professional. I did feel like his personality changed the more he got involved with Piper. He seemed like a hardened FBI agent at the beginning, and his character softened further into the story. I was more into the mystery than Beck and Piper's romance.
I'm not sure what role Beck's brother had in this story other than to give his character some background. I don't feel like if he had not been part of the story, it would have made any difference.
I was surprised by the actual murderer, but not surprised the murderer was involved in something nefarious. I thought it would have been interesting if there had been more details about the roles Piper's friends played in their plan.
It was an entertaining book. The narration was ok. Sometimes it sounded like it was a bit difficult for the narrator to make that transition from one character to another.
Prepare to jump right into the deep end when you open the cover of PERFECT TARGET by Barbara Freethy. The action starts on Page 1 and never lets up.
Beck is an FBI agent who experienced trauma as a child and moved through different jobs (all connected to helping others) before landing at the FBI. Piper Nolan was a child actress who lacked for nothing growing up. Now an adult, she’s turned her back on Hollywood to find peace as a pastry chef.
The pair are thrown together when Beck is part of the team investigating a yacht explosion that killed a U.S. senator — a man who played Piper’s TV father before moving into politics.
There’s little else I can say without spoiling surprises for you. Author Freethy again writes a taut romantic suspense title that kept me gripped from the beginning. The clues unfold for us as they unfold for the characters. I absolutely adore how Freethy used subject matter “ripped from the headlines” to create an engaging mystery and romance.
Although PERFECT TARGET is the 11th title in Freethy’s Off the Grid: FBI Series, readers can jump in at any point. PERFECT TARGET is a great title to introduce yourself to this series.
Perfect Target by Barbara Freethy is the 11th novel in the Off The Grid: FBI series. It is a page turner keeping the suspense up and the reader engaged. This novel focuses on the FBI group from the prior novels, but can easily be read as a stand alone. The group is very tight knit, so slowly characters from previous novels do show up as cameos or helpers in this novel.
One of the main characters is a hot FBI agent Beck Murray. He is investigating a yacht that blew up in the harbor. The last person who was on the boat was Piper Nolan. What really strikes Nolan is that when he was a rookie cop, another yacht caught on fire and he fished Piper Nolan out of the water.
After finding Piper and convincing her to share information, not that she shared everything. Beck and his team with the knowledge they have and with all the information they have coming in, they are positive they will solve the murder. Too bad other things are swirling around the deaths and maybe it is Piper who is in danger.
Perfect Target by Barbara Freethy is a great read. The storyline and characters are interesting. Another great read by Barbara Freethy.
Agent Beck Murray is experiencing a case of déjà vu when he pulls up to the marina in Newport Beach Harbor after a yacht exploded, killing a senator. Years earlier, when he was a rookie cop, he’d been called out to the same marina when there had been a yacht fire. That incident had been declared an accident. But Beck couldn’t shake the feeling that there was more to it than that. And he also couldn’t shake the image of a young star, Piper Nolan, who he’d pulled from the freezing water, only to have her disappear. When he learns that Ms. Nolan was onboard this yacht right before it exploded, he realized he has to find her and find out just what she was doing. Two yacht’s destroyed, and the only link was Ms. Nolan. Barbara Freethy has the ability to weave a story that is so engrossing, so captivating, and so enthralling that you can’t put it down. I became immersed in the latest suspense-thriller in the FBI Off the Grid series. With each new book in the series, I tell myself, this is the best one yet! And somehow, with each new book, it seems she outdoes herself. Ms. Freethy is a master storyteller and I so enjoy going along for the ride.
An yacht explosion that kills a Senator, eerily reminiscent of an earlier fire on a yacht, makes pastry chef Piper Nolan wonder if they're connected. Especially since she seems to be targeted by someone who wants to do her harm.
Piper was a child star and the Senator was her on screen dad. Having been tossed out of the Hollywood hierarchy in her teens when her self-esteem was low, with alcohol and drugs easily accessible, she has reinvented herself and now is happy with her life.
FBI agent Beck Murray is also reminded of the night years ago when he rescued Piper and she disappeared. When Piper is the last person to see the Senator alive, she becomes the number one suspect.
I loved this book! The connection between Piper and Beck from years before comes roaring back, even with Piper as the main suspect. Once Beck realizes she did not do it, the mystery continues along with their increasing romantic connection.
I did not even have the murderer in my sites, but how PERFECT it was for this book! I hope this series continues for many more books. They're always great reads for me.
Perfect Target is #11 in Barbara Freethy's Off the Grid Series. I've loved all the books in this series but I think this book is one of my favorites!! It's exciting and romantic, sexy and sweet. Beck is definately a swoon worthy hero, very protective of the young actress he saved years ago when he pulled her out of the ocean. For the first time in her life Piper has someone she can rely on and trust to have her back....if only she wasn't "slightly" breaking the law. The bad guy did surprise me ...although maybe I shouldn't have been. Because of the "me too" movement this story feels very relevant and current. Barbara tackles the topic with grace and sensitivity. As usual one of Barbara's strengths is her character development. Three dimensional, and with flaws... her cast of characters, past and present, keep pulling me back for new adventures. I heartily recommend this book. I want to thank Barbara Freethy for the opportunity to read an advanced copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
This book is a great addition to the Off the Grid FBI series. In this book FBI agent Beck is the star, a sexy hero with just enough vulnerability. At the beginning of the book we meet former child star who went down the wrong path turned pastry chef Piper. Piper goes on board a yacht to deliver a dessert of hers to an old co-star. While on board she also sneaks around doing some odd things, and as soon as she gets off the boat blows up. As the story unfolds Beck keeps running into Piper unsure if he can trust her, and if she is innocent as things start to go wrong and people keep getting hurt and dying. Some powerful people in Hollywood are playing a dangerous game, and whether Piper wants to be or not she’s in the middle of it. There was a lot of romance, action, and mystery in this book. I was very surprised at the end of the book by who was behind everything. A really great book with a lot of twists and turns that I did not want yo put down. Another fabulous book by Barbara Freethy! I received an ARC of this story, and this is my honest review.
I’ll start off by saying that there are mentions of child abuse and rape. If these are triggers for you, you might want to stay away from this one.
That being said, the author has created an action-packed story with twists and turns that will keep readers guessing as to who was behind the attacks on Piper. She also created a well-developed romance between Piper and Beck that didn’t feel rushed. She always does an excellent job of balancing the suspense and romance, where neither overshadows the other and both only add to the overall enjoyment of the story.
I always enjoy seeing other members of the FBI team that were featured in previous books. It’s nice to catch up with them, as well as to see how they always support each other, and have each other’s backs.
This is the eleventh book in the Off the Grid: FBI series. While I feel like this could be read as a standalone, I do recommend reading the other books in the series, as they’re all great reads.
If you enjoy romantic suspense, you can never go wrong with a Barbara Freethy book.
This review is of Perfect Target, book 11 in Barbara Freethy’s Off the Grid FBI series. I received an advance copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. Perfect Target, like the rest of the books in the series, is another winner! Everyone has secrets. Some aren’t that big of a deal, and others can get you killed. Exposing someone else’s secrets can be even more deadly. So when a senator is blown up on his yacht, the FBI is interested in everyone’s secrets. Will Piper’s secrets give her the strength she needs to finish her job? Or will they destroy her hope for any kind of a normal future? What about the other girls? How do they fit in? And will the secrets ofFBI Agent Beck Murray help or hinder his ability to do his job and keep Piper safe? And the biggest question to go with all of these secrets is why haven’t you already read this book? You don’t need to read the others in the series to understand this one. But again, why haven’t you?
Perfect Target by Barbara Freethy is the eleventh book in the Off The Grid : FBI Series.I simply love Barbara Freethy's FBI series and this book captivated me from the first first chapter. This is a second chance romance suspence book and we meet FBI Agent Beck Murray and former child actress Piper Nolan. Beck didn't expect to meet the Piper who had been haunting his dreams for the past few years. These two meet again when Beck is assigned to investigate the boat that was blown up. Beck came to Pipers assistance years ago and now he thinks it isn’t a coincidence that Piper is connected to both events. Piper has been let down by many people so she is reluctant to tell Beck the truth. I am voluntarily reviewing an advance complimentary copy of this book. The opinions expressed are my own and I have not been compensated for this review
Perfect Target is the 11th book in the Off the Grid FBI series written by Barbara Freethy. Former child tv star Piper Nolan finds herself near another explosion on a boat. Piper is now a pastry chef who was delivering pastries for an event on the boat. Piper’s tv dad, who is now a Senator, was on the boat. FBI agent Beck Murray was a policeman the first time Piper was involved with an incident on an exploding boat. Piper and Beck cross paths again with the second explosion. Beck knows Piper is keeping secrets from him but he is determined to protect Piper while they solve the mystery. Another story that pulls the reader into from the start and keeps the reader up late at night to finish the book. The book can be read alone but every book in the series gave me many hours of happiness in the world created by Barbara Freethy. Thanks for another favorite book.
Barbara Freethy is my favorite romantic suspense author & this latest book does not disappoint. The entire Off The Grid FBI series is great, all featuring one of a group of agents who went thru training together in Quantico. Perfect Target is the story of Beck & Piper, a former child actress turned pastry chef. Beck was a harbor policeman before joining the FBI, and rescued a young Piper from a burning yacht 7 years ago. Imagine his surprise when his latest case involves a yacht explosion & death of a Senator in that same harbor…..and the last person to see the Senator alive was Piper. FBI Agents don’t believe in coincidences & neither should you! Freethy weaves a great tale of multiple suspects and a strong connection between Beck & Piper that they can’t ignore. Loved these characters and this story of the ugly side of Hollywood fame & fortune.
Whenever I pick up a book by Barbara Freethy, I know I’m in for a great read. Her books never disappoint. This story features FBI agent Beck Murray and former child actor Piper Nolan. I fell in love with both characters from the very beginning. Piper has recreated her life and established a business as a pastry chef that she adores. There is much more beneath the surface, hints of which arise from the very first chapter. Beck meets her after a yacht explosion and tries to discover whether she had any part in it. As he works to provide protection, sensing that she is not being honest with him, they end up developing a bond that goes much deeper. I found myself trying to find every available minute to pick up this novel and read. Like all of Freethy’s books, it is a page turner that has you on the edge of your seat until the very end.
Another tremendous read! Maybe my favorite? Barbara Freethy’s Off The Grid: FBI Series just keeps getting better. She writes each story so you are completely immersed in the mystery, romance and intrigue. This time a yacht blows up killing a California congressman. Agent Beck Murray is assigned to it and it reminds him of an incident years ago when a yacht caught fire and he was a young cop. Piper Nolan was at both scenes. Was it just a coincidence or something more. But she doesn’t want to confide in him, so is she guilty? As Beck gets further into the case, Piper becomes more than an assignment to him. Can he keep her safe and find the responsible party. Each time I got a chance to read a few pages, I didn’t want to put it down. I had to see what happens. There were so many well written twists and turns to the plot. Well done Ms. Freethy. Can’t wait for the next story to be told.
Yet another excellent book by Barbara Frethy, a thriller, a mystery involving important people from Hollywood and politics.
When the FBI and its teams of competent agents need to get involved in complicated cases, not even agent Beck Murray will be able to escape unscathed, especially his heart, because in this new case, his teenage crush, ex it Girl Piper Nolan is involved, and he needs to protect and save her.
Seven years ago Beck saved Piper from an important and dangerous event, now they are reunited and he needs more than save her.
I love it when books show what it must be like behind the scenes of Hollywood and how difficult it is to be a successful actor and live with competitions, paparazzo, gossip, envy of so many other bad things and experiences.
