I just read through this after seeing it in the book drop at work, and had to do a quick review. It’s such a great little book, and a fun way to show how the food we eat powers our body. I know it’s directed at young children, but as an adult reader I just really loved the idea of showing what each food actually does for you, like “beets help you breathe deep” and “kale helps your skin form scabs because of vitamin K”. As an adult, even though I know fruit and vegetables are healthy and beneficial, I still know I don’t get enough of them in my diet. But seeing some of these facts had me thinking I need to add some items to the next grocery list. :)

This book is so precious and shows the importance of individual fruits and veggies and the benefits each one has on the body. The story has a long introduction that explains why different fruits and veggies come in a variety of different colors. The author does a great job with explaining nutrients, and how these foods can give children “superpowers” like being strong, smart, and full of energy. I loved the message this book portrayed, as it felt very encouraging and explained many different options for children to be interested in. This story also introduces children to new foods that they may be intrigued by and want to taste themselves to feel new superpowers. The story also has fantastic illustrations, where the food itself is a real image, and there are little sketches in a dry-erase marker that portray a character regarding that food’s superpower.
This story can relate back to Moebius’s work regarding picture book codes. The images in the story are fantastic in incorporating the food’s importance on the body. It gives children great examples of what these foods are like as well, which helps them remember what it really look like. The images add character to the foods which create a memorable experience for children to explore new foods and the benefits that healthy food holds!

Brief summary: Young readers will learn how fruits, grains, nuts, and vegetables help different body parts.

Comments: I loved this book! It is so informative and done humorously. The book is in sections by the color of the food. Meat is not included. The bottom of the page lists if the food is rich in vitamins, nutrients, etc. The back sections are Food Options and Body Chart.

This children's book is a cross between a picture book and a board book. The pages are cardstock.

Where was this book when I was a kid? It is an excellent addition to home, school, and public libraries.

What a great idea! Explain to small children why it is good to eat different foods of different colors! Then tell them which part of their body benefits from eating that color! Sure to help Mom and Dad with a picky eater! Really like the illustrations - reminiscent of 50's advertising art - a very fun book!

This is a cute little book about why we eat different foods for various nutritional benefits. The big bright pictures are appealing and the simplistic benefits of different nutrients are accesibly presented for kids!

Childrens nonfiction, health. I almost wish this book was formatted in picture book size as I think it would be checked out more. But it is a fun and informative book, that takes the reader color by color through food and what it actually does for your body. The illustrations feature photographs of the food, with pen illustrations adding pizzazz-- faces, people, animals, etc. For example the page in the orange section for sweet potatoes has text that reads "Sweet potatoes help you grow healthy hair and strong fingernails. Vitamin B7" with three sweet potatoes admiring their flowing hair and beautiful nails. The back matter features alternative foods that provide the same benefits, so if one can't eat sweet potatoes, perhaps you can eat peanuts to strengthen your hair and nails. There is also a sketch of the full body that cross-references where the foods in the book are of benefit. Visually appealing, informative, and a great book to introduce various food groups or nutrients.
