In a world where even spiders are tres adorbs, cute, cuddly creatures comfort one another whilst downing copious cups o' joe.

description

This is a comic strip played for the warm, fuzzy, AWWWW factor, more than laughs, and if that's what you're looking for, you'll be squealing with gooey delight.

I actually subscribe to this one on GoComics, where the sweetness is doled out at the rate of one strip a week. That's about all the sugary-goodness this crusty old broad can handle. Reading a year's worth of strips in one sitting resulted in a cuteness overload.

Your results may vary depending on your tolerance for pumpkin spice and rainbow sprinkles.

I need something saucy and smudgy - STAT!

Thanks to NetGalley and Andrews McMeel Publishing for the sugar.

Oh geez. This is all lovely and sweet, full of relatable life-affirming sentiments, many a person will feel very seen. Plus: it's rammed up to the eyeballs with cute art.

But! It's also unbearably, aggressively twee. And only occasionally funny. Which just makes it not for me.

I loved the first Cat's Cafe collection so much that I downloaded this the second I saw it on Netgalley, and was so excited to read it. I loved it just as much as the first one, if not more! The soft, sweet themes of self-care, friendship, healing, taking space and time for yourself when you need it, and valuing the good things in life while acknowledging the bad days, too — it was all incredibly wholesome and comforting, while also being funny and adorable. I can't recommend this collection highly enough!

Thank you to the publisher for the review copy! All thoughts are honest and my own.

Representation: Fox is deaf/HoH and uses sign language; multiple characters have mental illnesses

Content warnings for: mentions of depression, anxiety, loneliness, self-disappointment

A wonderful collection with positive affirmations, a variety of mental health acknowledgments with a healthy scoop of coziness. My favorite is the little short "A Brew to Remember". All of these warm & colorful vignettes are affirming and allowing. Excellent for when you're feeling not so great whether that be physically or mentally. *Sparkles*

Matt Tarpley’s One Cup at a Time: A Cat's Café Collection is a wonderful, positive, and super cute collection of comic strips. The cute and colourful illustrations are absolutely darling. I love the supportive and sweet way that the book handles timeless and relevant issues.

This uplifting book welcomes readers into the world of cheerful cafe owner Cat and his friends like Penguin, Kiwi, Snake, and Rabbit. We follow along as these likable and relatable characters navigate mental health, friendships, the pandemic, self-esteem and anxiety, as well as simply enjoying the holidays and the seasons. The situations in the book aren’t huge or dramatic events but, instead, there is focus on the quiet but still important moments.

This book is so cheerful, uplifting, and positive! Every page just fills me with comfort and joy and brings a smile to my face! The book is very easy to read. I have never read anything from this author before but I had no problem understanding and enjoying the characters.

The artwork is adorable, colourful, and so well-done! I particularly love the pretty outdoor scenes which happily capture the peace and beauty of nature. I love the cute animals with their distinctive and expressive faces! There are so many different characters from Otter to Fly to Gerbil and yet all of them are so cute and memorably drawn. Every time I see Lubshark with his toothy grin and Cat’s cheerful smile, I break out with my own smile! However, my favourite is loyal and mischievous Kiwi with his knife!

I love that the characters experience realistic and everyday situations that are so relatable and which can really strike a chord with anyone who is struggling or just needs some reassurance and comfort. I love that Cat is always there for his friends as well as us readers. I adore how Kiwi uses his ever-ready knife to destroy Penguin’s bad thoughts while Rabbit battles his shadow thoughts and Lubshark spreads love and cheer throughout the ocean. I love that the animals always band together to help and support their friends. I like that the book explores mental health struggles realistically and hopefully. The characters celebrate their little victories, persevere through their problems and try their best to manage their issues. I also definitely appreciate the book’s promotion of self-care as well as supportive and caring friendships.

I definitely recommend this sweet and uplifting book! It is perfect for a quick dose of happiness and positivity. I can’t wait to see more of Cat and his friends!

Thank you to NetGalley and Andrews McMeel Publishing for this book in exchange for an honest review.

This is Matt Tarpley’s second book and I loved it as much as I loved the first one. I adore this book, his art, and his characters so much.

This book has been focused upon mental health and life affirmations, along with lots of cuteness, adorableness and softness. In this book, all the characters are going through something and they are finding ways to cope. I love that how everyone wants to help each other. All the characters are such nice friends to one another and are very supportive. They would do anything for each other. They are always there for one another, helping each other and cheering each other up. I really loved all their friendships, it was so wholesome and heart-warming.

Highly Recommend this book! I loved it so much.

2.5⭐

I remember loving the first Cat's Cafe (5 stars!) when I read it in 2020 and was delighted to see a second installment. Unfortunately, Once Cup At A Time just didn't do it for me.

This comics collection is just as cute and vibrantly illustrated, with an equally adorable cast. However, the content fell flat. It wasn't particularly funny or comforting or relatable despite the overall positivity. I am writing this review immediately after turning the last page but have already forgotten most of what I read... it just wasn't a memorable book.

Good for when you are in the mood for a light, fluffy, sweet and feel-good read, but I feel like there's not much substance to it.

Thank you to Andrews McMeel Publishing and Netgalley for an ARC of this book.

Super cute and easy to read! This is a small little book that is built around webcomics, meaning there’s no full plot but more tiny little graphic short stories.

This graphic novel featured lots of mental health issues, as well as friendships and other silly stories that I loved. It was super easy to get into, always being able to jump into a new story with different characters each time.

Speaking about characters, these characters are featured as different animals such as birds, penguins, foxes, rabbits, etc. Each character was special in their own way that I adore, two characters stuck with me. One of them is Fox, a character who is hard of hearing so they use sign language, which I love seeing in comics since I feel as though this type of representation is not show ku nearly as much as it should be. Another one is Kiwi, and that’s due to just how chaotic that chick is with their little knife.

Now going back to speaking about some of the issues that this webcomic features. It shows mental health in a way that makes it not as scary to deal with. Despite such a subject that can be very hard to deal with, the way that this comic dealt with it was in a lighter and manageable way where I could easily relate to many of the featured scenes in this book that made me feel like I’m not alone in this journey of life! There are also so many encouraging parts in this book which was just what I needed right now. I am in love with this comic. Not to even mention how cute the art style is!

Highly recommend this to those who are looking for a cute and encouraging comic that is bound to lighten up your mood!

Thank you Netgalley for allowing me to read this ARC!

This book is for sensitive souls, ones who are anxious, or depressed, or afraid to ask someone out. I think a happy well-adjusted person might like this book just fine, but I don't think it's for them. It's cute, sometimes so sweet that it borders on twee, and sometimes but not always funny. It is always sensitive and emotional and about being kind and gentle with oneself and others, especially with those who don't have an easy time in the world. There is coffee-loving Penguin, loyal and fierce knife-wielding Kiwi, grumpy-looking Toad, and many more. I would have given this book four stars; I didn't like it quite as much as the first one and a few of the strips are repeats. But at the back of the book after pages to take notes, there are TWO PAGES OF ADORABLE STICKERS. Five stars. Awesome.

I LOVE THESE BOOKS.

If you want a feel good, reminder of what kindness does, how it is okay to feel the feels, what being a good listener and friend looks like, then this book [AND the first one in the series] is absolutely 100% for you [and for all those people that you love in your life].

I just love Cat and all his friends and seriously would visit his lovely little cafe for a coffee, snack and a hug. The supporting characters [Kiwi is one of my absolute favorites] are just as important as Cat and teach so many important lessons that we ALL need to be reminded of from time to time and there are so many feel good moments as well that balance out it all.

I cannot praise this book enough - just go and find a way to read it as soon as you can; you absolutely will not be sorry.

"KIWI, NOOO!"

Thank you so much Andrews McMeel Publishing and NetGalley for allowing me to read this book and instantly pick up my mood! All opinions are my own and I highly recommend!

I laughed and awwwed so much through this collection. I loved the breathing moments to discuss how you can be sad and it's okay or mad and it's fine. It was so well put together with the funny moments. I need to own this collection, just because I love Kiwi and Fox so much! The FOX USES ASL!!!

Highly recommend for just a good simple sweet book!

This book was so heartwarming and cute! Perfect if you had a bad day and want something tender and adorable. Or a cold rainy day. The author addresses important and complicated topics such as depression, anxiety and burn out from a sweet and humorous perspective. The drawing is so cute and good, I really like all the characters, they have their problems but try to help each other.
Really loved it!

My daughter (5) really liked the characters (who, admittedly, are all very cute). This is another entry in what seems to be a growing genre of "life affirming comics" and this is one of the better ones I've seen. Sometimes it's quite funny - the character named Kiwi stands out for only speaking by using the word "Kiwi" to express a whole diversity of emotions, and also carries a knife everywhere in a way that's kind of humorously threatening and nonthreatening at the same time - but the overriding mood here is one of coziness, confronting life's challenges with plentiful friendship and warmth, caring for those around you... All great things to express, but the punchline is too often some kind of platitude that could just as easily exist as faux-wisdom in an Instagram post. Which is unfortunate, because I get the sense the author is genuine in expressing these sentiments (and a really talented artist). I guess I found myself wanting a little bit more depth or complexity out of these, but it's really hard not to like the adorable eccentricities of these characters.

many thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for allowing me to read this short and sweet graphic novel for free, It was exactly what I needed to read today ! I cried so many time while reading it - not sad crying though ... some of the lines these cute animals said were just too comforting and relatable + i kinda needed someone to say these things to me today? not because I didn’t know them or didn’t hear them before i just think I tend to forget them when I’m actually down/in a bad place mentally …. Being reminded that life must go on and everything is going to be okay eventually is just comforting enough to me :} anyways this small book lifted my mood :D I would absolutely recommend it to anyone who’s having a hard time - I believe it will help you feel at least a little bit better ?

IMPRESSIONS
One Cup at a Time brings back the lovable animals from Cat’s Café 🥺 Even though this is a collection of comics, I’d consider this a sequel and recommend reading Cat’s Café first. You’ll not regret it, as these comic collections are so wholesome! One Cup at a Time follows the familiar setting of Cat’s Café, located in a town populated by several animals that all love their favorite coffee shop. We get all the regulars from the first book plus Cat and Rabbit, as they serve their customers. There are also a couple of new characters, my favorite being Mouse, who comes across a drawing of the Café and sets out on an adventure to find this magical, cozy place!

The heartfelt discussions of mental health struggles, self-care, friendship, and getting through bad days once again make this such a relatable and comforting book ❤️ I love the slice of life format that shows us the daily life of the residents, sometimes it’s funny, sometimes it’s sad or heartwarming. One Cup at a Time manages the perfect balance between humor and important affirmations/reminders.

IN CONCLUSION: One Cup at a Time is another fantastic comic collection by Matt Tarpley, all about mental health, told through the lens of several lovable animal characters that will steal your heart. If you loved the first book, this one is just as good! And if you haven’t read any Cat’s Café yet, I recommend trying it out, it’s guaranteed to make you feel understood and comforted

I don't really have a lot to say about this collection, other than that I enjoyed it. As usual, the characters and their interactions are enjoyable, and readers will probably be able to relate to several of the characters and situations depicted. There's lots of mental health-related rep in this comic: dealing with stress, depression, over-stimulation, not knowing what to do when friends are going through a rough time, etc. This particular volume also touches on the pandemic a bit.

If I had to pick, I'd probably say that I liked the first volume more, if only because of the COVID-19 strips. They weren't very frequent and were most noticeable to me for what they didn't cover as what they did. I was surprised that feelings of isolation didn't come up more - then again, this series is so focused on the value of community and supporting others that I suppose there were things it couldn't really do without becoming...not itself.

Overall, this is a largely comforting and enjoyable series.

Extras:

Some pages at the end for readers to write down their thoughts and feelings (nice idea, but if I'm going to do that, it will be in a notebook I've devoted to that purpose), as well as two pages of stickers featuring Cat's Cafe characters and designs.

At Cat’s Café, everyone is accepted as they are! This is the second book in a series that features a collection of adorable, funny, and occasionally serious comics. Like the previous collection, we follow a cast of characters who own, work at, or frequent the Cat’s Café. This time around, there’s a little bit of a different feel to the comics, and some indicate that they were drawn during the earlier days of the pandemic. Those comics reference the things that were happening as people were going stir crazy while in a shutdown, like cutting their own hair or taking on new hobbies. There’s even one that references a zoom meeting with family!

Like before, many of the comics bring uplifting and positive messages as well as making sure to represent anyone who is struggling. We see various characters having different struggles, and we see other characters doing their best to support them at times. I love that there’s a good balance between the serious and the goofy. You can feel uplifted by any one of these comics. For me, I keep thinking about the swole Kiwi drawings and cracking up. It seriously made my day!

All in all, this is an excellent follow-up collection of comics that range from adorable to funny and serious. The artwork is downright adorable and vibrant when it needs to be while displaying a lot of emotion through the change of color palettes. I highly recommend reading this series of comics because they are really uplifting.

Disclaimer: ARC provided by Netgalley, opinions are my own.

Just like its name, One cup at a time, the book follows its theme throughout the various journeys of different talking animals who would make you fall in love with them.

I had a very good time reading through this graphic novel and coming forth of different characters’ experiences and how sweet, and supportive others are around them. These little animals made me want to have them as friends in real life but that is not possible is it? or I’d switch them up with my real-life ones.

The colours in the book are warm and sometimes according to the mood of the event, overall they make you comforted and would brighten up your day. The illustrations in the book are lovely.

It is emotional at the same time being light hearted.

If you want to have a table book, consider having a look at this one.

I’d love to suggest this book to people who are trying to navigate their mental health and relationships and want to see how to see this in positive light easily without pressurising themselves.
