My daughter wears leg braces and uses a walker. She loved this book when I bought it for her. It was great for her to see other kids wearing braces too! I wish there was more too it.
I wanted to like it as my kid has braces for her feet. But the words weak and repetitively saying they wore braces was grating. Naming the kid, the picture of them doing normal things would be good, but the “kid who wears braces” makes it almost their whole identity. The explanation might help my son understand his twins condition a bit more and the pictures are great. I just may need to do some improv to read it if they ask
Thank you Lola, for writing this book! I have 5-year-old who has to wear braces. And I love the matter-of-fact, non-scary way you tell about leg braces. There are so many different disabilities - please keep these wonderful books coming!
Summary: "Some Kids Wear Leg Braces" explains to kids how certain children wear braces on their legs as part of every day life. It teaches why they might need these braces, and what the purpose and function of them is. It also explains how kids who wear leg braces do and enjoy doing all the same things as any other kids.
Analysis: I really liked this book in its simplicity. It is easy for kids to read and understand from the pictures, which show children in leg braces going about their lives. I love how it teaches kids to accept and treat children that wear leg braces just like everyone else, because they are just like themselves and can be friends easily.
How I will use this book: I will use this book to teach my students inclusion and acceptance of children who might have physical or mental disabilities. I want my kids to have a natural understanding that kids who are different are not any less or any less able to be their friends, and they should learn to treat them as equals as they are from this book.
This book is straight forward and very informative. Great for the purpose of educating kids about the uniqueness of some of their peers. In my opinion, books like these are powerful tools for students.
I'm just glad that I don't. But at least these kids can do stuff that other kids can do. And even baseball players wear them, so maybe these kids can grow up and play baseball.
Some Kids Wear Leg Braces is a book about kids who wear leg braces. These kids still go about life normal except for having to wear leg braces. Some use walkers to help walk. Leg braces come in different colors and sizes covering their whole leg or part of their leg. Physical therapists help the kids learn how to do the different exercises in that they are capable of doing.
I did not mind this book. It was informing about kids who wear leg braces and gave me an understanding of them.
I would put this book in my classroom library for the students to read and relate to students who wear leg braces.
