The Vazula Chronicles #4

A Kingdom Restored

Rate this book
When the end of the world is coming, there’s no time to think about your heart.

Merletta is out of time, and so are the triple kingdoms. She can’t outswim her mistakes, and if she can’t expose the Center’s lies, so many will pay the price. Matters of the heart have no place—whether on land with Heath, or in her underwater search for her family.

Heath has accepted that there’s no simple way for him and Merletta to be together. With the wrath of the dragons hanging over Merletta, and the increasingly desperate need to clear Percival’s name, Heath has never felt more torn between worlds.

Merletta is ready to give everything in this final fight, and Heath’s attempts to protect everyone have caused his magic to grow far beyond what he once imagined. But they both know it still won’t be enough—even if they could achieve the impossible and save their two worlds, there’s no future where their paths don’t diverge.

There’s nothing to cling to but hope. And yet hope is the most tenacious and powerful ally of all…

Deborah Grace White was more or less born reading. She grew up on a wide range of books, from classic literature to light-hearted romps. Her love of fantasy was inevitable from the time her father read the entire Lord of the Rings trilogy to her and her siblings when she was four years old.

The love of reading has traveled with her unchanged across multiple continents, and carried her from her own childhood all the way to having children of her own.

But if reading is like looking through a window into a magical and beautiful world, beginning to write her own stories was like discovering she could open that window and climb right out into fantasyland.

Now she gets to live that childhood dream amidst the fun and chaos of life with her husband and their four kids.

I received this Audiobook for free. My opinions are my own.

I have tried to avoid spoilers by being vague, but the really sensitive might want to beware.

So it turns out that this series didn't work that well for me as a whole. Just when Heath's brother starts acting like a mature and rational human being, other members of the family step up to take his place in annoying me. Their behavior is probably realistic under the circumstances, but I just didn't enjoy reading about it. And when someone tells Heath that he probably can't do anything to save the girl he loves, so he shouldn't bother to try... (especially since they are criticizing him for not supporting them; and yet they have done nothing but fail to include & support him, unless they wanted something).

I did enjoy the way the group surrounding Merletta came together to support her and act as a true "found family", despite knowing about the foolish choices she made and their potential consequences. I was saddened when someone who had seemed like a "good guy" turned out to have knowledge about some of the nefarious things going on, and didn't seem to have a problem with them.

I like where it ended, and wish that there had been more along those lines.

Nothing new to say about the Narration.

A sweeping and moving conclusion!

I am in tears as I finish this series! I loved seeing Merletta and Heath reach their happy ending against all odds, seeing growth and discovery and truth brought to light. And I desperately want to see what becomes of the restored Kingdom of Vazula. This had heartwarming friendships, humbling challenges, and great victories. Wonderful story!

Review after completing series.

Book 1 review
Book 2 review
Book 3 review

A lot of what I loved and hated in the previous 3 books was the same here. We finally understand what Reka's issue is with Merletta and I can't help thinking if Reka had either mentioned it sooner or Heath had been bothered to actually try to get him to talk it would've been sorted sooner. I can understand Reka not disclosing the information since Heath is a terrible friend and any time he somewhat asked you can tell he doesn't really care that much what Reka's reasons are.

I really enjoyed the wrap up of some points and others not so much.

For example, I enjoyed how the problems of Merletta's kingdom were solved. I feel like there is hope of a new future there. I thought the twists of who people were had varying degrees of shock. Characters we though were mostly bad having redeeming qualities. Characters who we thought of as good people who actually had some dark aspects. Merpeople who were weak(not physical strength but their character was weak) and it did end up causing them to buckle under pressure. I agreed with the one person that it felt like the dragons got off easy but how exactly do you make dragons(immortal) answer for crimes? You can't.

I liked that Merletta

In contrast I wasn't happy with how Heath's kingdom's story ended. I liked how some of the side characters developed(Percival). I wish others like the prince had been focused on more because he seemed like an interesting character.

The king though...

The guy has been suppressing magic users ALL of them who happen to be his OWN FAMILY for years. Not giving them a voice in their own treatment(he picked their advocate out specifically because he believed Heath to have little/no magic), abusing his power, making laws such as a forced loyalty oath no gatherings of more than three magic users. I mean these people are all family. So no one can get together as a family without a non-magic supervisor? So if heath and his brother and his parents sat down for a family meal legally that wasn't allowed?! Now it never really got enforced but it felt more like oversight on the authors part than because the king was letting things slide.

They weren't allowed to use their powers without the kings say so. I mean the list goes on. We finally find out why he's so anti-magic after awhile and that was like really??

I'm so happy that Reka made the choice he did at the end. He deserved to follow his dreams and hopefully he finds better friends.

Frustratingly Almost Good

This is somewhat a review of the series in addition to the fourth book as many comments are widely relevant.

The Triple Kingdoms and merpeople are interesting. I liked that world and the characters there significantly more than the land/human aspects. I feel like more time should have been spent unraveling the Center's secrets, such as why its role and purpose shifted, how it became secretive, how did the three kingdoms concept actually arise? Also, why were humans later prevented from finding Vazula? Its barrier seemed separate from the merpeople one.

Anyway, Vazula and the merpeople are why I kept reading the series. The human/land conflict was frustrating. That seemed intentional, but by the end I pretty much only liked one human - Lachlan - because everyone else just became annoying either through action or inaction. Heath, the main human character, had some great moments, but he was frustrating to read. He'd have a voice of reason, then do something irresponsible and/or foolish - often related to Merletta. The back and forth nature of his story wasn't fun, and as the series progressed I found myself liking him less.

As for the romance, I almost stopped viewing Heath/Merletta as romantic. He seemed obsessed at times, to the point of being unhealthy. His powers added to this feeling. Merletta handled the romance aspect much better. She was concerned about Heath, but thoughts of him didn't take her away from her world as much. She actually developed strong friendships instead of isolating from everyone else. My favorite romantic relationships in the series are both between merpeople, one an established couple and one that develops through the series. (I'd love to see some of their pov! Perhaps an additional epilogue for their wedding or a future novella answering some of my questions above.)

Note, I've read the fairy tale, loosely related books, but not the Kyona series. Reka is in both series, which is part of why I read this.

A great ending to a fantastic series!

The Vazula Chronicles—what a journey! Of all the series by this incredibly talented author, I believe this one might be my favourite so far. I loved Heath and Merletta—both as characters and their storylines. The series as a whole was perfectly paced, and everything was very well thought out. Although some things (throughout the series) were a little bit predictable, they didn’t detract from the enjoyment of the story.

It was also lovely to see the characters from the Kyona Legacy—Jocelyn and Kincaid’s story was my favourite from that generation, so it was a pleasure to see them again. Also Reka!! What a treat to get to know him so much more intimately, and a great way to tie all the series together. Highly recommended!

Everything, and I mean EVERYTHING came to a head in this book. As such, it feels like half the book was one big climax, yet it held me on the edge of my seat for all of it. WORTH IT. Although I would like to strangle a few dragons, and maybe a king or two, everyone else got solidly satisfying arcs that intertwined in ways both expected and unexpected. I wonder if there may even be more to come, given that this story follows the generations-long-in-building ramifications of previous series, and there's definitely room for more of that to come after this series. Either way, this series is one of my favorites!

Fantastic Conclusion!

This book was all you could want in a conclusion: resolution, character growth and maturity, love that finds a way, and so much more! The dragons in Deborah Grace White’s world are so interesting to me that I loved this entire set of books that let us understand them better. Rekavidur is the best and the chapters from his perspective were my favorite. Enjoyed this series (and this book) a bunch!

Great conclusion to a great series! My one complaint in book three was that Heath needed to mature a bit, and that was addressed in this book. It was rewarding seeing Heath’s character grow and mature, and Merletta was Merletta! She was fearless and awesome!! Heath and Reka’s friendship was still the sweetest.

I have yet to read something by this author that I haven’t loved!

Summary: In year four, we are really STRUGGLING to keep fish girl at the academy for any length of time (it’s rough when everyone there seems to want to kill you) but the show must go on . . . at least until the dragons attack!!

Will fish girl, human boy, and all their loved ones survive as more of their worlds collide and the conflict really HEATS up?

(Get it? Heats up? Because dragons? . . .Fine, I’ll just show myself out . . . after this last review anyway).

😛

Pros: This is a great conclusion/conclusion for the series, and though it borders on MAJOR spoilers, I have to say that I really liked the ending—how it wasn’t about one character sacrificing EVERYTHING to be with the other person, but them both deciding how they want to live their lives in the future (separately and together).

From the beginning, I have enjoyed that our MCs are NOT the ones with the most influence in their respective kingdoms (more minor nobility, if that) and their stories are not so much about “climbing the ranks” as it is finding a place together inside of the existing structure and creating something new.

Cons: Nothing new to see here, so we can move along (this thing is PAGES long already, but I suppose that’s what I get for trying to review the whole series at once…).

Conclusion: This series was great, and I really enjoyed it. Not a single book I didn’t like, and a great mix of academy stuff, royal politicking, magic, action, and sweet, slow-burn romance leading up to all the happily ever after’s (except for the dragon who has volunteered to find MORE adventures for us… such a nice guy!).

Read it if you like any of those things!!

I don’t even know how to write this review. A Kingdom Restored had so much packed into it, and is the ending of an amazing series!! 🤩😭 I truly loved everything about this series. Deborah knows how to write incredible stories set in rich fantasy lands, with characters that feel real, plots that grab you and don’t let go, and danger and coming doom chasing the MCs. I never knew what was going to happen next, and several things surprised me! Merletta and Heath fought with everything they had to bring their respective kingdoms to rights, sometimes failing or making things worse, but they never gave up. And through everything their love stayed true and strong for each other. 😍

That ending was sooo satisfying!! I love that we got to see the future possibilities for all of our beloved side characters, as well as an exciting future for Merletta and Heath! 🤩🤩🤩 (also I’ve already read the Kingdoms Tales series and JUST found out Reka is the dragon in them??! Now I’m going to have to read that series again with this new knowledge!! 😱🤯)

Is it woke?
Not at all.

Is it good?
Despite falling into traditional new author traps such as pacing issues, White's thrilling storyline, unique characters, and phenomenal world building make this series astounding. It far surpasses typical YA stories. It is just as enjoyable for teens as adults.

Is it appropriate for your children?
There is no swearing, and despite boasting a sweet romance, the 'Vazula' series only (mildly) sexual content are chaste kisses and a few references to the hero's shock at the mermaid's 'shells' and the difference in winter human attire to summer mermaid attire.
There is some violence. The heroine trains as a guard and has a few real fights. This is appropriate for the adventure genre and no more detailed than the next tale.
The tension is possibly the most mature thing in this series. It increases as the series progresses, and there is at least one assassin attempt in each novel, though these are usually off page or non violent. The last book culminates in a battle. 10-12+.

I was following the series quite well, and although I don’t consider this book to be a bad ending per se, I still felt that it didn’t quite meet my expectations for the ending of this series. Most elements were alright, such as the characterisation and the plot, but sometimes I did end up questioning certain points that weren’t developed and tied up properly by the end of the book. For example: what was the fate of Heath’s kingdom after everything? Why did Percival’s attitude towards everything change? What about the king after the deeds he’d done against the magical people? I also feel that the main relationship between Heath and Merletta sort of stagnated during this novel, so the ending felt a little unearned. Still, this was a decent underwater fantasy, and I did like its combination of political intrigue, romance and adventure, with some excellent world-building that *made sense*. And honestly, that’s better than a lot of other stories out there.

Rebels with a Cause

A Kingdom Restored follows Heath, Merletta, and Rekavidur as they fight leaders, friends, and doubts to do what is right. Four books worth of secrets are revealed. Deborah Grace White does a great job of taking her time with each layer of the ending to make it significant and satisfying in a fashion similar to the ending of J. R. R. Tolkien’s Return of the King. As always, the love and friendships are true, the irony of the dragons’ hilarious, and the exploration of human character is intriguing. This book is full of adventures and twists complete with a very satisfying ending. A Kingdom Restored is the perfect pinnacle to finish the series.

Great series!!

This was a great adventure/tale of romance told without unnecessary explicitness which some authors feel necessary to extend the length of their books.
I loved this author's way of using two cultures/kingdoms and loyalty to the characters love of their own culture/kingdom while honoring the other's beliefs and loyalty as their relationship grew.
I would highly recommend this series to anyone who loves reading about adventures in life and seeing how growing into one's own character can develop.
Well done!!!!

Fantastic end to an engrossing series.

The Tri Kingdoms are facing a dragon attack. Valoria fractures further over the attempt on King Matlock's life.

Heath is torn between his loyalty to Valoria and his love for Merletta, afraid that if he tells the crown about her realm, he will further jeopardize her life.

Who is behind the scheme to drive a wedge between the crown and the power wielders?

And will Heath and Merletta ever get together given the widening chasm between their Kingdoms?

The wrap up was very satisfying.

this series is a must read

This series and this author is amazing! I cannot recommend both enough! It’s rare you finish a book and look forward to re-reading it soon, but this is definitely one of those. Heath and Merletta both are fantastic characters the reader grows to love and want to know more about. I love that these books are clean reads that I can share with my young teen daughter.

Though this book wrapped everything up nicely, it wasn’t as well done as the first ones in the series. Maybe it was rushed, or I had just read a book that was extremely well done so this one fell flat in comparison, I’m not really sure what it was. All the questions were answered in the end, and it was definitely in a way I wasn’t anticipating, it just simply wasn’t as exciting as the other books.
It was still a good series that I’d recommend though.

A must read

I've been on a bit of a reading hiatus as life has gotten busy over here, but when I saw the notification for this release, I HAD to read this. Right now! It was so so good! This is a fabulous ending to this epic tale. Such a perfect happily ever after, though I would champion another spin off from this series. A happy read.

Awesome series!!!

These 4 books were a totally captivating time of adventure. The characters were well-written by a master story teller, and how they found themselves interacting within the tales kept me up VERY late reading. Great work & I'm looking forward to more exciting adventures in the future😁😁😁😁

This was an amazing series!! Finished it in 4 days (a book a day 😂). Would really like a short story about what everyone was hinting at before the wedding. I would also love to see their reunion with Reka when he comes back from his other adventure.

Next stop: the Kyona series. Literally reading all of these series in reverse 😂.

Contains: some violence. This concludes Heath and Merletta’s story and gives a bit of backstory behind why Reka shows up in the Kingdom Tales books. I thought some of Heath and Merletta’s choices were ill-advised but I guess all’s well that end’s well.
