Melody Foster has a PhD in marine biology and a master’s in genetics, specializing in octopuses all over the world. When COVID stops all funding for her Octolab, she takes a consulting job in the Cook Islands for a deepsea mining operation, looking for metallic nodules that litter the Pacific floor and contain the rare minerals needed for the electric vehicle industry. Issues with surprisingly intelligent guerrilla octopuses are monstrously hindering the operation, so billionaire Chinese mogul Jack Pa instructs “Dr. Mel” to fix the problem, or else. With her very life at stake, Melody enters the operation’s saturation chamber at 500-feet sea depth, trying to put an end to the deliberate killing of her babies, while threatened by convicted rapists and murderers who are undergoing career rehabilitation from Chino Prison’s famous diving program. Will she survive it all long enough to discover the fate of her long lost brother, adopted away from her during childhood, and secure the funding needed to keep her lab open another year?

Leave the Bottom: Cook islands is a work of fiction in the action and adventure sub-genres and it was written by Randy L. Slapnicka. The work is best suited to the general adult reading audience for its mature themes and moderate violent content. When Melody Foster, a marine biologist with a fascination for octopuses, cannot continue with her research due to lack of funding, she takes a job in a deepsea mining operation. Things will get dangerous over time for Melody, as she faces octopuses, criminals and a violent millionaire. This great book captivates readers from the first page.
Author Randy L. Slapnicka holds a lot of information together in this massive underwater world, and it makes for a truly thrilling setting filled with suspense and intrigue, interpersonal drama, and dangerous games of secrets and murders. I really enjoyed following the plot and getting to know the characters. I highly recommend this novel.

I won this book from a Goodreads Giveaway in exchange for an honest review.

He beginning seemed a little slow at first but picked up pretty quick. Dr Melody Foster is a professor of marine biology specializing in Octopus. She takes a consulting job in the Cook Islands on a deep sea mining expedition. The expedition is noticing problems with the local octopus population in that they are attacking the equipment.

The storyline has a lot going on in less than 200 pages. There’s a of detailed information about octopus, deep sea diving and the characters in the story. All in all I found the book interesting and entertaining. The ending squared away the main story and sub plots quickly. There were a few typos and I usually don’t comment on those but one character was named Buzo and in one chapter he became Bozo which caused me to giggle.

This beautiful simple tale takes us to a world of adventure and fiction and is loaded with actions that keep one entertained until it even makes us forget what day of the week it is.
The fact that the story is written in the first person singular makes it a close narrative to us, readers, and it literally invites us to become part of what is happening to the main characters. All of them are well-crafted and interesting. The book alternates between the protagonist's voice and dialogues.
If I have to describe this book in a few words, I would say it is one of the greatest literary adventures of modern times.

“Leave the Bottom: Cook Islands” is the surprising debut novel of Randy L. Slapnicka. The delightful premise, the well narrated compelling plot, the great characters’ evolution and the detailed settings are of the stature of an experienced author. So, let me say that he possesses a huge talent and an incredible imagination. He’s now on my very short list of favorite writers.
The octopus of Melody is the key element in the development of the narrative and all the events revolve around this creature. In my case, this book was a wonderful escape and it makes for a read that is almost impossible to put down.
I enjoyed it immensely!! I give this book my highest recommendation!

I received a copy of this ebook in a Goodreads giveaway. I didn’t feel connected to any of the characters, nor did I really feel the connection to octopuses that I felt like the book wanted me to feel. It all just felt a little lacking.
