In The Awakened Mind , British biophysicist and consciousness researcher Maxwell Cade shows how biofeedback is made many times more effective by combining it with meditation - the ancient art of listening to the soul. Using his own Mind Mirror machine, a revolutionary advance in the precise monitoring of mind-body control, the author explains the relevant exercises, skills and sensory sequences involved in this extraordinary technique. As a result, new possibilities for relaxation, health and awareness become available, as well as a dramatic increase in both mental and creative potential. Biofeedback is the science of listening to the body, understanding its messages, and using the mind to control it.
Though not as easy to read as the "sequels" from Anna Wise (The High Performance Mind) and Judith Pennington (Your Psychic Soul), what blew me away about this book was the amount of helpful, tangible research into energy healing using Cade's EEG, which is known as the Mind Mirror. For example, on p193, he talks about research they did which showed that, contrary to what many healers believe, most healers' efficacy drops when they talk to their clients or drop out of the "awakened mind" state. This particular mind state, which combines alpha, beta, delta and theta frequencies, underlies all of the healers that Cade studied.
The point of all this is that if you're interested in energy healing, psychic development or deepening your meditation practice, understanding how to achieve the "awakened mind" can be enormously helpful. I was stunned to discover this book was written in the 1970s(!), since EEG is only now coming into the mainstream thanks to consumer devices like Muse.
This is a must-read for anyone interested in using meditation to effect healing or psychic development, as is the other two I mentioned.
The major thrust of the book deals with biofeedback and how it can be used by a person to modify their thinking and put themselves into a particular level of conciousness. The tool most talked about in this book is the Mind Mirror and the author goes into great depth on how it has been used to help people of all levels increase their ability to self-regulate their thoughts and emotions.
This is an old book, 1979, but the majority of the information in it is applicable to anyone who desires to have more control over their thoughts and emotions as a way of increasing their personal quality of life.
