The Adventures of TOBY BAXTER: THE RIVER ELF, THE GIANT, AND THE CLOSET
Lighthearted and conspiratorially didactic; an agreeable romp toward adulthood .-- Kirkus Reviews
He' s ready to leave kid-dom behind. But can he stand tall against an army of barf-inducing beasts?
Toby Baxter can't wait to be a teenager. On the cusp of turning thirteen, the superhero-obsessed boy's jaw drops when a baffling stranger appears and begs him for help. But when he's led through a portal on a whirlwind trip to a magical land, he's terrified to be plunged mid-battle between elves and a legion of stinky trolls.
Bewildered and queasy, Toby is confused when his new friends claim he is the hero who will lead them to victory. And now only his dangerous quest to retrieve a legendary slaying sword can save his skin... and turn the tide of war.
Can this newly minted teen become a real warrior and rise up as the strange realm's savior?
The Adventures of Toby The River Elf, The Giant, and the Closet is a high-flying middle grade fantasy. If you like daring journeys, hilarious characters, and heartfelt lessons about confidence, then you'll love Tim Wright's timeless tale.

Readers will love his slightly tongue-in-cheek fantasy adventure quest, drawing as it does on a wealth of popular culture snippets, from King Arthur and The Hobbit to Diary of a Wimpy Kid and Star Wars . Wright's narrative voice is quirky and engaging but does not obscure the important messages in the narrative about what it means to be heroic.-- The Children's Book Review
The Adventures of Toby Baxter is a fantasy mystery of epic proportions-and it's captivating from page one. The reach of this book extends from middle- grade readers all the way to adults of any age. Try it, you'll see what we mean. The pages are full of intrigue and twists and mystery-all while Toby struggles to find his place and purpose in his new world. The setting is lush, the creatures are awesome-and just as lovable as the characters, and the bad guys are pretty freaking scary. Full of fun, rich in suspense and brimming with adventure! --readingwithyourkids.com

I’ve been reading fantasy for decades, and this book still managed to surprise me. What I loved most is how it doesn’t rely just on flashy magicit, ’s full of heart. The story begins with small, everyday details that slowly build into an epic world filled with elves, trolls, and courage tested at every turn. Toby’s growth feels earned. His moments of doubt, compassion, and bravery make him such a believable hero. The supporting characters, Mathilda, Phoenix, Judah, and Grandpa Baxter, all add something unique to the journey. I teared up in Chapter 24 when Grandma Baxter brings out the Sword. It’s both an ending and a new beginning. A wonderful read for anyone who believes that courage and love can still change worlds.

Are you looking for a fantasy book to enchant your middle-grade reader with epic adventures, giants, elves, trolls and, other magical creatures? Our latest certified great read might be just what you and your magic-loving young reader need. The Adventures of Toby Baxter: The River Elf, the Giant, and the Closet by Tim Wright is sure to delight your kids and transport them to worlds they can only dream of. We recommend it to fifth-sixth graders who have already read The Hobbit, Lord of the Rings, Harry Potter, Percy Jackson, and the Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe.
The Adventures of Toby Baxter follows the superhero-obsessed almost thirteen-year-old boy, Toby Baxter. He is super excited and eagerly awaits his superhero themed birthday party. But little did he know he will be surprised by a total stranger on his birthday night who appears and asks for his help. In the blink of an eye, Toby’s transported to a magical land where he encounters elves, trolls, and other magical creatures. River elves consider Toby Baxter as their savior. But Toby thinks otherwise. According to him, he is a mere thirteen-year-old with no magical powers to help them. But soon this ordinary boy will realize the true meaning of being a H.E.R.O. (Honorable Enterprising Responsible Original) and gets more than the ability to retrieve a legendary slaying sword. He, along with his new friends are drawn into a centuries-old war between elves and a legion of stinky trolls.
In this page-turning fantasy tale, Tim Wright creates a riveting story where one boy must figure out why he is the key to his brand-new world, and understand the all-important question by his grandfather: How will you use your power?

A fantastic adventure series that hooks young readers, highly recommended for boys
The Toby Baxter series by Tim Wright is an absolute hit in our household. My 8-year-old son devoured all four books back-to-back, completely absorbed by the fast-paced adventure and strong sense of momentum that runs through the series...
These stories strike a great balance between excitement and readability. The plot moves quickly, the stakes feel real, and Toby is the kind of relatable, courageous young hero that kids genuinely want to follow. Each book pulls you straight into the action and makes it very hard to put down—exactly what you want when encouraging children to read more.
What really stood out was how eagerly my son returned to the next book in the series. The “just one more chapter” energy quickly turned into “I’ve finished it already”... It’s rare to find a series that sustains that level of engagement across multiple books.
Highly recommended for children who love adventure, mystery, and stories with heart. If you’re looking for a series that will genuinely excite boys and keep them turning pages, the Toby Baxter books deliver in spades. And they are fantastic for boosting literacy, to complement school studies.

I have to start by saying a huge thank you to Amelia. If it weren’t for her recommendation, I never would have discovered this hidden gem of a story. From the first page, I was completely pulled into Toby Baxter’s world. What I loved most is how the story balances real emotions with fantastical adventures. Toby isn’t just a brave hero, he’s relatable, funny, and sometimes unsure of himself, which makes every triumph feel earned. The friendships he forms with Mathilda, Phoenix, and Judah feel genuine, and the way they support each other is heartwarming.
The moments that really stayed with me were the scenes with Grandpa Baxter and the Sword Loach. There’s something about how the story weaves family history, legacy, and magical adventure together that makes it feel timeless. I found myself laughing at Phoenix’s antics and gripping the pages in suspense during Toby’s encounters with Clygon and other magical creatures. And the ending, wow! The conversation with Author was both clever and emotional, leaving me excited for more adventures in RiverHome. This isn’t just a story for kids, it’s a story for anyone who loves adventure, heart, and a little magic in their lives.

This is a really top notch fantasy tale for middle grade readers, which nonetheless incorporates a lot of modern pop culture from ‘our’ world. It’s well and imaginatively written. It’s full of adventure and humour. And in addition, it has some great life lessons.
In fact, there’s only one thing I’m not 100% sold on... I’m all for educating though stories. I do it in my own middle grade novels. Yet characters (be they 12/13-year-olds or elves) pausing during important events to discuss the finer point of grammar or word definitions according to Dictionary.com, not only interrupts the narrative, but somehow seems less believable than any number of elves, trolls or magic swords!
That being said, The Adventures of Toby Baxter is a fantastic read for children and the young at heart. I for one can’t wait for the next instalment!
Incidentally, the short Toby Baxter prequel, available as a free download from the author’s website, is definitely worth a read. Especially if you do so before starting this first novel.

Toby Baxter is just your average, superhero-obsessed almost-13-year-old—until the night of his birthday, when a stranger appears and whisks him away into a magical realm full of elves, trolls, and legendary battles. Suddenly, Toby finds himself in the middle of an ancient war, where everyone believes he is their savior. But how is a regular kid with no magical powers supposed to defeat an army of trolls?
This book has everything—a rich, immersive world, fast-paced action, lovable (and creepy) creatures, and a main character who grows in ways you don’t expect. Toby’s journey is fun, thrilling, and inspiring, and the deeper themes of courage, responsibility, and purpose give the story so much heart.
Tim Wright has crafted a fantasy mystery of epic proportions that will keep middle-grade readers, teens, and even adults hooked from start to finish. If you love books like Percy Jackson, Harry Potter, or The Hobbit, you need to pick this one up.

The Adventures of Toby Baxter is exactly the kind of story that makes you fall in love with reading all over again. It’s got action, humor, mystery, and a whole lot of heart, making it a perfect pick for kids, teens, and even nostalgic adults who love a good adventure.
Tim Wright’s writing is so engaging and immersive, pulling you right into Toby’s world. The characters are brilliantly crafted—each one bringing something special to the story. The mischievous River Elf? I loved him. The kind-hearted Giant? A total favorite. And the Closet?? Let’s just say I wasn’t expecting that
But beyond the fun and excitement, this book is packed with important messages—about friendship, bravery, and embracing the unknown. It’s the kind of book that sticks with you, making you think about it long after you’ve finished.

I picked this up thinking it would just be another kids’ fantasy book, but wow, what a surprise. From the first chapter, Toby’s curiosity pulled me in. By the time he stepped through that mysterious closet, I was hooked. The RiverHome world feels alive, filled with elves, giants, trolls, and lessons about courage and kindness. I especially liked the way Toby faces fear and doubt, not with superpowers, but with heart and quick thinking. The scene where he helps others instead of just fighting really stayed with me. Even the smaller characters like Phoenix and Deckor are written with care and warmth. The story reminds you that true strength isn’t about having a sword, it’s about knowing when and how to use it. Beautifully done, and perfect for both kids and adults who still love a touch of magic.

Fun adventure, good lessons
Toby Baxter embarks on a journey like no other. He is lost through his journey, kindly guided by his friends, but he finds his way when it matters most. He meets all sorts of characters, from elves to gnomes to trolls, and each brings a new meaning to his quest.
There are many references to other works scattered throughout, even a shout out to Doctor Who. This story feels like a mash up of Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings, Chronicles of Narnia, among others. Some of these connections are referenced explicitly during the story. The author also throws in some grammar lessons to teach the teens who will read the tale.
Aside from a few typos, punctuation issues, the excessive use of Toby Baxter's name, and tears, the story is a fun read.

Toby is super excited for his superhero-themed birthday party, but things take a wild turn when a stranger shows up on his birthday night and asks for his help. And suddenly Toby is taken away to a magical land full of elves, trolls, and other magical creatures.
This book is a fantastic fantasy mystery with a lot of twists and turns. Even though it’s perfect for middle-grade readers, it’s a fun read for adults too. The story is full of mystery, and as Toby tries to find his place in this new world, it feels like you are right there with him.
Also the world-building is amazing, the creatures are cool and easy to love, and the bad guys are also pretty scary! It’s a fun, suspenseful adventure with plenty of surprises. The story has excitement and magic. Fun read.

Tim Wright has created a world that feels so alive, full of unexpected surprises and lessons wrapped in adventure. Toby is a fantastic main character—curious, brave, and full of personality—and the friends he makes along the way make this journey even more special.
I also love how accessible and engaging the writing is. The storytelling is smooth, fun, and vivid, making it the perfect book to enjoy as a family. It’s the kind of story that sticks with you long after the final page, reminding you of the importance of courage, friendship, and believing in magic.
Seriously, if you’re looking for a bedtime read that will keep both kids and adults entertained, this book is a total winner!

From start to finish, Toby Baxter’s story shines with wonder, humor, and heart. I loved how Toby grows from a curious boy into someone brave and wise beyond his years. The friendships with Mathilda, Phoenix, and Judah made the journey feel so real. Each chapter built perfectly on the last, moments of laughter, danger, and hope blending seamlessly. The way Grandpa Baxter’s love echoes through the story, especially when Toby finally learns the truth about the Sword Loach, genuinely moved me. The ending with Author is clever and gives the book that “storybook within a story” feeling. It’s rare for a book to balance family, faith, and fantasy so naturally. Amelia, I owe you one, if you hadn’t told me about this book, I never would’ve found it.

This book surprised me in all the best ways. It starts off simple, just a boy, a closet, and an ordinary morning but quickly becomes an unforgettable adventure filled with heart and humor. Toby is such a relatable main character. He’s brave, but also scared, funny, and curious, like a real kid would be in his shoes. I especially enjoyed his friendship with Phoenix and how Mathilda brought a steady balance to the group. Clygon is a villain you love to hate, intimidating but fascinating. The world-building is incredible without ever feeling confusing. And that ending! The conversation with Author was such a unique twist that made me smile and think at the same time. A magical, meaningful story that I’ll be recommending to my students and nieces for sure.

One of the most delightful fantasy adventures I’ve read in a while! The author really knows how to mix excitement and emotion. Toby’s journey through RiverHome is full of lessons about bravery, friendship, and believing in yourself. His connection to Grandpa Baxter gave me chills, especially when the green mark appears on his hand. It’s like magic and memory beautifully intertwined. Phoenix made me laugh more than once, and Deckor was such an unexpected source of loyalty. I can’t stop thinking about the Sword Loach, it’s more than a weapon, it’s a symbol of courage passed down through generations. Amelia, thank you for recommending this one, I wouldn’t have known about it otherwise. You’ve got great taste in books!

This story completely stole my heart. I went in expecting a fun kids’ adventure but found something deeper, a story about growing up, facing fears, and discovering what it means to be truly brave. Toby Baxter is the kind of character young readers will look up to. His kindness, humor, and loyalty make every scene shine. Mathilda is one of my favorites, smart, steady, and fearless. And Phoenix? Absolutely hilarious. I also loved the little moral threads woven throughout without ever feeling preachy. By the time I reached the epilogue, I had tears in my eyes. The whole “Author” scene was such a brilliant and creative touch. Amelia, I owe you for this recommendation, you were right, it’s something special.

This book provides a fun and entertaining escape into a magical world filled with unusual creatures and humorous moments. The setting is imaginative, and the story introduces enough unique elements to keep readers curious about what will happen next. The humor plays a big role in making the book enjoyable, especially for younger audiences who will appreciate the silly and slightly gross details.
At the same time, the story can feel predictable in places, particularly if you are familiar with fantasy adventures. Some plot points follow expected patterns, and a few twists are easy to anticipate. However, the overall experience is still enjoyable because of the engaging tone and lively storytelling. It’s a good choice for readers looking for something fun and easy to get into.

A breathtaking adventure from beginning to end. What makes this story stand out isn’t just the fantasy, it’s the heart behind it. Toby’s journey is about courage, compassion, and believing that even small choices can have big consequences. Mathilda, Phoenix, and Judah each bring something unique to the table, and the connection with Grandpa Baxter ties it all together. The epilogue with Author is such a brilliant ending, it made me both laugh and think. Amelia, thank you for introducing me to this magical world. It’s going straight on my bookshelf next to my classics.

Toby Baxter’s world is one I didn’t want to leave. I loved every moment, the laughter, the fear, the magic, and the deep family connection that gives the story heart. Grandpa Baxter’s role throughout the book is one of my favorite touches. It shows how love and guidance can outlast even time. Toby, Mathilda, and Phoenix make such a dynamic trio, and the way they face Clygon together had me on edge. The ending with Author made me grin, so clever and hopeful! Amelia, I seriously can’t thank you enough for recommending this story. Without you, I would’ve missed this treasure completely.

An exciting and heartwarming story about friendship and self-discovery. The main character, Toby, goes on a journey full of twists, surprises, and some really touching moments. The story is easy to follow, great descriptions and characters.
It’s perfect for teenage readers, but honestly, anyone can read this book. The book is entertaining, & also teaches important lessons about courage, loyalty, and believing in yourself. This is a book full of adventures and stories with heart.

I discovered this gem when our book club picked it for our middle grade read what a delightful surprise! Toby's journey from reluctant teen to hero in a magical world felt fresh and fun. The mix of elves, giants, and hidden portals kept discussions lively. I loved dissecting Tim Wright's clever weaving of pop‑culture references into fantasy. A charming balance of adventure and heart not just for kids!

A fast-paced, magical tale that’s both thrilling and heartwarming. The world of RiverHome is described so vividly that I could picture every moment, the trolls, the giant, the forest, even the smell of the air. Toby’s courage feels real and human; he doubts himself, but he always chooses to do what’s right. I especially liked his interactions with the Christmas Giant and how those scenes tie back to hope and faith. The ending left me smiling and wishing for book two.
October 7, 2025
From the first chapter to the last, I was completely invested. Toby’s courage feels so genuine, it’s not about being fearless, but about doing what’s right even when you’re scared. I loved the way Mathilda and Phoenix support him, and how Grandpa Baxter’s memory stays alive through the Sword Loach. Chapter 24 brought everything full circle in the most beautiful way. It’s a book about bravery, friendship, and the power of legacy.

Huge shout out to Clara for introducing me to this book! She knew I’d love the blend of fantasy and humor, and she was spot on. The narrative felt playful yet rich, and Toby’s coming-of-age arc is sweetly done. Clara’s recommendation led me to one of the most enjoyable reads all year. Highly grateful!

Every chapter sparked conversation: from the river elf to battling giants, it’s packed with whimsy and life lessons. If your club wants something light yet meaningful, this hit the sweet spot.

This book pulled me in from the very first chapter. Toby is funny, brave, and totally relatable—his journey into a world of elves, giants, and hidden portals was like stepping into a dream. The story is full of heart, adventure, and just the right amount of humor. Perfect for kids and anyone who still believes in a little magic. I couldn’t put it down

I literally just closed the book, and I had to come leave a review. What a fun, adventurous ride! Toby’s character is so easy to connect with, and the magical world he enters is full of surprises. It’s fast-paced, creative, and leaves you wanting more. I didn’t expect to enjoy it this much, but now I can’t wait for the next one. Highly recommend!

I didn’t think a middle grade fantasy could keep our group talking for this long, but Toby Baxter proved me wrong.
From the clever river elf to the tension with the giant, there was always something to debate.
By the end, we were planning fantasy-themed snacks for our next meeting.
It’s rare for us to find a book so easy to love.
We’ll be recommending it to other clubs for sure.

Our youngest member picked this, and it turned into one of our most engaging discussions.
Everyone brought a different perspective to Toby’s journey—kids saw the magic, adults saw the life lessons.
We laughed at his sarcasm, argued over his choices, and celebrated his courage.
The fantasy setting gave us so much to imagine together.
Definitely a keeper for our club’s “favorites” list.
