As a young, up and coming apex predator of the night, Ariane needs the minions, a territory, dubious allies with unknown agendas... From Alexandria to the frozen north, opportunities and danger abound. Fortunately, Ariane has many tools at her disposal and if everything fails, there is always black powder.
This is, undoubtedly, yet another fun addition to the series that I thoroughly enjoyed reading, electing quite a few laughs and emotional moments. The main character continues to grow, add various interesting interactions throughout her existence, and constantly strives to further her knowledge and abilities. As I have said, in previous reviews, if you have enjoyed, the first four books, you should enjoy this one.
This was another great addition to the series. More of what we already experienced in the previous books.
One very positive note is that something that had been grating on my sense of disbelief was somewhat nicely resolved. In particular, one of the mysteries of why a character acted as they did towards our protagonist was made clearer and that at least allows me to further buy in to the world.
I think this is where the story becomes like a slideshow of holiday pictures. We see a lot of different things but they go past very fast and don't have a lot of depth to it. Time passes quickly and side characters stop mattering.
This time around, the book focuses on the "werewolf problem", in which Ariane struggles for the territory of Illinois. I found it to be clearer in focus and execution, with a well define beginning, middle and end. The next arc should focus on magic learning, so that should be interesting
