When Stars Become Shadows

Rate this book
For the past seven years, Emersyn Jane Merona had been owned by a deadly mob boss and forced to service any lonely soul who found their way to Skarsrowe, a shady port town on the edge of the Baronian Sea. When Syn commits a murder and initiates a daring escape, she finds herself in the arms of her boss’ archrival, the legendary Captain Killian O’Donnell.

After seeking refuge on his mysterious ship, Syn soon realizes that she may have traded one form of danger for another. Desperate to regain her freedom, she falls back on all the old tricks she used to survive her indentured servitude. Just when she is ready to give up, a murdered siren changes her fate and the Lord of Lost Souls, Malakai Barron, drags her down into the underworld.

Through a deal brokered by someone from her past, Syn now has to try to earn her freedom from not one, but two key players in the dark underworld. Though it seems impossible, opportunity strikes when Malakai’s missing sirens reappear and Syn is given the chance to investigate. Who is taking the sirens? And why does their song haunt her dreams?

As Emersyn uncovers the demons of her past, will the monsters of her future be kept at bay, or will she become another lost soul anchored to the bottom of the sea?

I was lucky enough to get to be an eARC reader for this book, and I’m glad I was!

This is a pirate-y based dark fantasy. The author does a good job of leading right off with a content warning, I’ve said before that I don’t see this very often, but I like it every time I see it. This novel goes pretty deeply into things, plus there is strong sexual content. With a beautiful cover and intriguing plot, it’s bound to be picked up by a wide assortment of people!

The world made me think of Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End but with a darker, more tense atmosphere. It also follows the gods of the sea and Davy Jones idea, but in its own way that the author has made her own. The magic is also incredibly underhanded in a way I liked. We’re never quite sure what it is or why and it adds some overall mystery.

The novel follows a badass female main character. The author does a great job of giving them depth: they are cunning, smart, snarky, and confident in their own. For me this was nice to see as the MC is riddled with grief, regret, and pain linked to trauma, and I feel that oftentimes writers can miss that fine line where the character can’t or doesn’t exist outside of the trauma making them exist. This is not that. She has trauma, she deals with trauma, and she also stands alongside it.

Only real thing I disliked is the sexual content. Smut is just not for me. I’m not the audience, I do no like it. I’m sure it’s written well, so if you are a fan, here’s just one more reason to read it!

This novel ends with an absolute banger of a cliffhanger. I was so stoked. I feel like I constantly read books that nicely button up at the end, even when another one is coming. This novel gives you a third of a final page and then says BAM, see you in book two. Personally a 4/5* for me. Absolutely worth picking up! Compulsively readable.

Hamilton's New Adult Dark Fantasy is a maelstrom of emotion, fire, and beauty. She gives the reader exactly what they want at the right time, keeping eager eyes on the page until the last word. I adored Emersyn's growth throughout the story and her coming into her true self (not spoiling here!). Hamilton gives us an atmosphere of jewel tones seas and spiced dialogue to entice and capture the muddiest of mood readers! If you like stories of strong females, growth, spice, fantasy, and sea faring magic, grab a copy of When Stars Become Shadows!

OMG! I am so glad that I got to read this book. I don't know that I would have found it if it weren't for TikTok (of course) and I'm obsessed and (not-patiently) waiting for book two.

This book follows Emersyn, an indentured sex-servant to some weasel named Julian. When she finally escapes, she hides away on a boat that she had always been drawn to...where she quickly gets caught by the captain and crew. We follow Emersyn (Syn, Red) as she gets to know the crew, but begins wondering why this crew is different...

Pirates, gods, sirens, steam, inclusivity, and so much more are packed into this beautiful novel and I truly can't wait to see what happens next...especially after that MASSIVE cliffhanger!

Thank you to the author for providing me with an ARC copy of this book! All opinions are my own!

Emmie has created an awesome world, with kickass characters, that I could not get enough of. Her writing kept me hooked from beginning to end; and I absolutely looooved that despite Emersyn (our female MC) having to go through horrific life experiences, she kept on fighting no matter what.

The side characters were some of my favourites (*cough* Captain Killian, I am at your service any time, any day🧎‍♀️. Oh and ofc we can’t forget Sven & Clara). And I loved, loved, LOVED the lore and world-building. I can’t wait to find out more in book two!

Oh, and for all my spice 🌶 lovers… yeah, this book might just be for you 😏

All in all, a super fun and enjoyable read… except for that last chapter 👀 I NEED ANSWERS, EMMIE!!

NOTE* This book does deal with some heavy themes, so please do check the content/trigger warnings beforehand

Rounding down because the romance was a little all over the place. It felt like our main character had the hots for everyone which felt weird considering she just escaped from being a sex slave. I just didn't feel like a romance/love story was there.

Honestly, there weren't a ton of noteworthy points for me to talk about other than I enjoyed it. Nothing over the top and nothing too boring. I just kept turning the page and enjoyed it for what it was.

“How easy it was to make something as though it never were. If only darker memories didn’t leave an unrepentable stain to the soul.”

When Stars Become Shadows is a story of survival, of secrets and lies, and of perseverance. It’s a dark fantasy but the messages are wholly human. I want to sail this ship to the heart of the ocean. Take me to the depths!

Emersyn Jane Merona. Woman of the year and stealer of my heart. If you like strong, snarky, flawed, and enigmatic FMCs you’re going to love Syn. The way her desire and struggle with self-worth blends and ebbs is so well written. I’m ready to support women’s rights and wrongs in book 2!

The mystery woven throughout is elusive and shrouded. Each new piece of information is swallowed up but the thirst for more remains. Deep, dark, and teeming with secrets, When Stars Become Shadows is the ocean itself.

Before I go I’d like to take a moment of *feminine urge* for the spice. Erotic and seductive. Not overpowering but integral to the story. Still thinking about the desk scene. We love a good desk scene, don’t we? 🥵

“Ruthless. Cunning. Unafraid.”

A dark and luring tale that brings a wave of fantasy to a relatable heroine. In the FMC, Emersyn, we see firsthand, her journey through the very real weight of needing to fend for herself at an early age. When and where trust and the ruination of that trust will shape a person. A dark adult fantasy dipped in mystery and blends the comfy themes of fairy tales with a chilling dose of reality.

The tale begins with a canon blast of adventure. The themes of piracy and magic sparkle, especially in the final third of this book. I humbly (impatiently) request book 2 IMMEDIATELY, because that cliffhanger is a doozy! It’s giving me a lovechild of Black Sails, a dark rendition of The Little Mermaid, and Treasure Planet.

This read will be for readers who understand the heartache that accompanies losing trust, losing family, and losing themselves. Hamilton showcases knowledge beyond the page of how the best artists know the deepest hardships and then writes about it.

A unique artistic choice at the beginning of each chapter was to have a similar opening line. Sharing them here.

There’s freedom in falling.
There is beauty in forgotten things.
There is power in seduction.
There is satisfaction in destroying.
There is scheming in deceiving.
There is strength in becoming.
There is pleasure in permitting.
There is shattering in clarity.
There is splintering in remembering.
There is magic in forbidden things.
There is vulnerability in honesty.
There is terror in remembering.
There is hunger in knowing.
There is achievement in bargaining.
There are answers in abandoning.
There is truth in discovering.
There is shock in revelations.
There is beauty in brutality.
There is envy in betrayal.
There is malevolence in creating.
There is bliss in ignorance.

————

This story left me thinking about the presence of magic in the quiet moments. The feeling of loss and betrayal, and how that stains a person’s soul. Emersyn wears her iced heart on her sleeve while secrets come out of the deep depths of the ocean.
The romance themes are not as forefront as I thought going in and that was a welcomed changeup for the dark fantasy genre. Keep your wits about you and if you hear singing…cover your ears. ;)

Reviews are for readers and potential readers, but if Hamilton ever does see this, I would like them to know anchors in our lives drop, weigh and free us. <3

Quotes that stood out:

“The greater the danger, the more I craved it. So, I did the only thing I could do. I jumped.”

“Starlight, to me, was among the most common forgotten things. It was lost within the shine of the moon’s glow, hidden beneath a cover of storm clouds, and only remembered if one thought to look up.”

“There’s freedom in falling. Freedom within the act itself, in the dance with the wind as it tosses your body in a skilled pirouette, in the way inhibitions are torn just as a scream threatens to escape your lips. Freedom in caring about little else other than what comes next.”

“When the siren calls The crew can hear An inviting path into the depths we fear But her sweeter song It is foretold Will soothe the soul as death takes hold…”

I absolutely loved Pirates of the Caribbean, and When Stars Become Shadows gives me serious Pirates of the Caribbean vibes.
It's dark and gritty with illustrative descriptions, bringing the fantastical world Emmie Hamilton has created to life.
The story starts on a dramatic note. It immediately grabbed my attention and ran with it.

Emersyn/Em/Syn/Red (whichever name you prefer to call her) is a complex character. She wears a hard exterior, but needless to say, after many years of being kept against her will - as Julian's prized whore - she is broken inside.
She can be tough when she needs to be, as well as bratty and defiant, but sadly, she struggles with self worth and self respect. So much so, when someone is trying to show her respect, she can't hack it and turns to her old ways, believing there's power in using her body as a barrier so the person in question can't get to her soul.

Captain Killian O'Donnel is another complex character whom I really liked.
He wears a hard exterior too, only he commands respect, and he gets it.
This being said, I'm glad to say that there's warmth and kindness deep down inside him and he seems to genuinely care for Emersyn.

I enjoyed meeting Clara and Sven, two members of Captain O’Donnell’s crew. Clara seems levelheaded and friendly and Sven is cheeky and playful.

I don’t exactly know what to make of Malakai, although he’s definitely not the most frightful character of the story…
What a killer cliffhanger!
I have so many questions I need answered.
I’m interested in seeing where the next installment takes us.

Another thing I really liked about this book was the quotes at the beginning of each chapter. It added a little something.

The sex scenes were more explicit and less romantic than I prefer, but I'm guessing I stand alone on this subject matter considering the last three books I've read (including this one) all had hard core graphic scenes.
The saying is "sex sells, right?"
So if you're big on smut you'll bask in it.

Chaotic and confusing - DNF at 75%

I wanted to like this book, but at over 75% through it, I still couldn't say what in the world the plot is. It's all structured very chaotically, with far too much inner dialogue and not enough action or dialogue between characters. No one actually explains anything throughout the course of the story, which instead of being intriguing or mysterious becomes outright annoying after a while.

The FMC is frustratingly inconsistent with her actions and motivations, somehow both ridiculously naive and at the same time manipulative and jaded. I got whiplash from the back and forth between her acting out of survival instincts and then suddenly trying to martyr herself for no explainable reason. Her sudden connections to people appear out of nowhere and lead her to repeatedly make questionable decisions based on no rational sense. Her recurring nightmares are a confusing mish-mash of imagery, sounds, and emotions that all conflict with each other and don't seem to drive the story in any way other than to make her and the reader feel unsettled and be an unnecessary distraction from whatever else was going on.

The question of who the MMC is meant to be remains unclear - there are two possible leads and neither of them seem great. Unfortunately, the plot is so vague and the characters are given such little development, that it's impossible to get a clue or gain an attachment to any of them.

The world-building is strange and feels like an unfinished idea, with the nations and worlds given unusual names, yet all the characters have familiar European names, all the foods are familiar, and the vernacular is modern, with one character even calling the FMC "babe" repeatedly. It just all feels mismatched for the setting.

The magic system is left completely unexplained. The imagery in several places feels like being stuck in an acid trip and makes about as much sense.

The recurring theme throughout the book is of people NOT answering questions, along with the FMC floating along making rash decisions without any thought behind them, and after so much time trying to wait for even one answer, I'm giving up.

A fast pace, thrilling tale of courage, mystery, and steamy pirate sex with unforgettable characters!

Each chapter of the book begins with a phrase following a similar format, my favorite of which is, “there is beauty in brutality.” This quote perfectly encompasses the themes of When Stars Become Shadows, as the main character Emersyn (Syn) escapes being a sex slave for a menacing man named Julian and is catapulted into a world she and the reader could never have envisioned.

While the story starts in the dangerous docks of Skarsrowe, it quickly expands across the Baronian Sea and ventures into the lands of Gods and other otherworldly creatures. Hamilton does an exceptional job of crafting a consistent tone and theme, exploring both the darkness and light that resides in all of us, including all powerful Gods.

Most chapters also start with a scene from Emersyn’s past, allowing us to grow close to her and her struggles. Emersyn was such a tangible and real character, and so are the others we’re introduced to across her journey. Killian was especially interesting, as he appears to love Emersyn selflessly while also harboring many dark secrets he refuses to share. As the many mysteries of the story unfolded into even grander mysteries, I was left reeling at the scope of the story. I’m so excited to see where Hamilton takes the series from here, as it ends on an incredible cliffhanger that leaves me wanting to read the next book NOW!

I must note that the sex scenes are extremely well done and super erotic. Moreover, they’re weaved perfectly into the rest of the narrative, flowing so naturally with everything taking place.

The fast pace of When Stars Become Shadows never lets up from start to finish, and by the end you will be utterly immersed in the world, lore, and characters that Hamilton has masterfully orchestrated.

I loved this book. I enjoyed the strong female lead and her journey to take back her power. The way the power of the importance of choice and consent was artfully written made the book one of my favorites of the year. Emmie Hamilton crafted a world with a unique pantheon that hints at but doesn't bog us down with Old Testament style info dumps of exposition.
In addition to world rife with potential for
expansion, we meet our main character. She's smart, determined, and filled with nifty nuances to her
character that reveal themselves along the way. Our
protagonist is supported by well defined supporting
characters that'we also get to know better as time
goes on. If you want a deft mixture of fantasy, magic,
light swashbuckling, and romance, you need to read
this.

This was a book that I was so freaking excited for when I heard about its release and I finally got round to reading it!😍

WOW.

Wow is the one word that comes to mind when I think about this book 💜 It’s rare that a book delivers on every promise it makes. From this book I was promised dark romance, pirates and twisted gods. l got all three and more 😱

The👏🏼characters👏🏼in👏🏼this👏🏼book! Emmie incorporated a clever mix of loveable, destablable, morally grey and conflicted characters ✨ Emersyn is a fantastic strong female lead, who uses her traumas and years of abuse to her advantage. It was brilliant to see a sexually abused woman still take ownership and pleasure from sex - a great message to anyone who has been through something similar ❤️ we also got not only one but several morally grey characters, including two questionable love interests! Although similar in ways and easily confused as the same character, Killian and Malakai had such stark contrasts! Emmie could have easily made one dark, brooding male and left it at that but by throwing in another, I was shocked and confused about who to root for- which i loved ☺️

The story was full of twists and turns, whilst maintaining a dark and ominous feeling 😍 There are deep emotions running through the story and writing which shone through in a raw and, at times, ugly way. This truly made me engrossed in the book and I finished it so quick because I could relate!

I was genuinely shocked at the reveal about Emersyn (although hints were made, the reveal had parts I couldn’t have guessed)! In addition, so much was left as a mystery, making book two exciting before it even exists! 😂

Last thing I would like to mention is that this book was so different from Emmie’s previous work- showcasing her talent for story telling! ❤️ absolutely a five star read! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Minor spoilers ahead.

I'm sorry but how how HOWWW have people given this 4 stars?

DNF'd a third of the way through. There's no depth to any characters and the writing is awful. The author is constantly telling instead of showing and over explaining everything and there is too much dialogue. So. Much. Dialogue.

I study creative writing and dialogue should only be used if its relevant to the story, not just wishy washy repetitive back and forth-ing between bland 2D characters.

The MC stowed away onto a ship and then apparently 2 days later is at 'breaking point' because the crew aren't doing what she wants or giving her answers? Wtf.

How the MC is written and acts and thinks is more like how a protagonist would be in the third book in a series, not withing 3 pages of one book. If that makes sense. The author writes like the things the MC says and the convoys between her and the captain are super meaningful but instead fall completely empty beacsue we haven't even begun to explore the characters yet.

It's a shame because the idea was super promising. This is the first time I've not finished a book in yeaaaars.

An erotic, psychological dark fantasy.

Escaping her life of sex slavery and attempting to stow away aboard a ship, Syn discovers her dreams of freedom may be shortlived.

The crew know more about her than they share, while her chemistry with the captain may ignite far more danger than seduction.

In an odyssey across the ocean and into realms of gods and monsters, Syn may just discover the secrets of her destiny.

'When Stars Become Shadows' is the first novel in a duology by fantasy author Emmie Hamilton. Following the story of Emersyn “Syn” Merona, we are plunged straight into action as she makes a daring escape from a brothel that has become her prison, leaving a dead man in her wake. Immersing us in a world seeped in the magical atmosphere of a fairy tale with a shadowy edge of burgeoning desire, Syn takes to the seas with a crew of pirates in a tale of romance, adventure and mystery. Featuring vivid world-building and a depth of lore and history, taking inspiration from classical mythology, every chapter brims with action and erotic tension.

I don't frequently read fantasy, but when I do this is how I love it - dark, psychological themes, layered with eroticism, mythological imagery and creatures, and entwined with adventurous mystery. I found some of the set-pieces reminiscent of TV series ‘Once Upon a Time’; scenes in this vein a delight to read on the page. Flashbacks reveal Syn's backstory and her deep-rooted trauma, as well as how she developed into the feisty, fierce and courageous young woman she's become. Smart, sassy, strong-willed, foul-mouthed, red-headed and exceedingly beautiful - Syn is an entrancing character; one you may find yourself developing a burning crush on. Surrounded by a host of characters, their actions and motives ranging from morally ambiguous to suspicious, Syn is never quite sure whom she can trust and whether they be friend or foe.

Fantasy, by its very nature, allows us to explore dark themes such as trauma and abuse somewhat through a safety lens, less confrontational than it may be in thriller and horror set in our world. The novel explores the nature of consent, misogyny and exploitation, and the attitudes and expectations of society towards women's relationships with sex and stigma attached to it. Hamilton does a marvellous job of using these heavy themes to evolve Syn's character and encourage empathy with her, exploring her trauma and how it affects her relationships and perceptions, while demonstrating her resilience and fighting spirit - always more a survivor than a victim.

Lustrous and seductive, 'When Stars Become Shadows' is an evocative and titillating fantasy, ending on a delicious cliffhanger; we await, with baited breath, the second part of Syn's story.

When I saw @the.butterfly.bookclub was doing an exclusive version of this book I jumped as it has been OK my to buy list for so long now! What better time to buy than with a brand new naked cover design and darker coloured dust jacket compared to the usual white?! Also to have a signed copy and all of the art work AND a chance to talk to Emmie while reading it. Totally worth the wait!

When Stars Become Shadows is a a beautiful and wonderfully lyrical pirate based novel from the amazing Emmie Hamilton.
I was hooked from the first chapter and fell in love with our MC Emersyn. She has lost her family and is now a sex worker for someone who thinks he owns her. Until she makes her escape and stows away on the Vox In Ventum where she meets a crew of quite secretive pirates. The captain, Killian, is sexy and aggravating but he, for some reason wants to pretect Em but from what she doesn't know. Meeting their boss, Malakai, is also a BAD deal but when that happens she starts finding out more about her past and makes a dead with him to find out who's killing his sirens for him. Back on the ship and then making an escape from Killians old Captain leads her and Clara to a new road in their future thanks to to his brother, Eos the Lord of Storms and Sea.
Okay but book 2 needs to be written and out now. I need to know what's going to happen after that ending! That's such a huge cliff hanger! I love how much empowerment for women there is in this book! It's wonderful!
"I don't need a man to save me"
I hope our Emmy gets a break soon and gets some answers about the last page 😨🤯😱

This book has everything you want from a dark fantasy. Splendid world building, dark romantic themes, spice (and not the Dune kind), mystery, intrigue and an MC who knows darkness, trauma and fights through it.

Take a trip over the ocean where sirens call, where figures of an underworld water kingdom control the souls on the surface. The banter between members of the crew - most notably Klara and Sven are a wonderful addition and break up the dark themes within the story. We meet Captain Killian someone who is protective, fierce and somewhat of a lady killer (without actually murdering women), and our MC Emersyn gets a literal taste of what he's about. And for those spice lovers out there, he can cook up a 5 star dish in one pan if you know what I'm saying.

Then we are introduced to the lord of the underworld, who has secrets, has an allure and is a little bit more controlling. But it's that bad boy vibe that does wonders for some I suppose. I expect he will have a lot more give in the next instalment.

Throughout the fantastical elements of world building Emersyn is a grounding factor in the recognition of trauma, of sadness and of perseverance. I liked the fact that she was deeply flawed and broken, but had the desire to fight. In life, we need heroes like this - one's that don't have super powers or super strength - just a growing resilience and will push through pain to find answers.

This book is amazingly written. Hamilton shines in crafting a character so relatable in a fantasy world and brings some beautiful descriptions, prose and thoughts to ensure that you walk away feeling like you have experienced something unique and memorable.

Pirates of the Caribbean meets Darkfever meets a naughty peter pan. Go get some.

When Stars Become Shadows by Emmie Hamilton is a dark romantasy full of pirates and magic. We follow Emersyn Jane Merona (Syn) as she escapes the cage of one dark underworld only to find herself trapped on a ship of pirates. As far as pirates go she lucks out as the crew and captain refrain from mistreating her. The only thing they hold back is answers to the constant questions Syn brings up. The male leads, Captain Killian O’Donnell, and Malakai Barron (Lord of Lost Souls) are interesting but have yet to be fully explored in this book. They both play an important part in the story but remain shrouded in mystery by the end of the book. Most of the book has Syn slowly uncovering the mystery that surrounds herself and who she is in the world. The thing Syn wants most of all is freedom, to go where she pleases without answering to anyone.
The writing style really stands out and develops the story in an interesting way. Each chapter begins with Syn looking into her past and uncovers a little more about her relation to the overarching story. The writing beautifully describes the world and gives you a real sense of where Syn is at the time, from visuals, feeling, and scents, you really get put in her shoes. There is some spice but it doesn't overtake the story at any point. There's much more inner monologue of Syn's yearning and inner struggle of wanting to prove herself as more than an object for pleasure than there are full blown spicy scenes. It is a unique take on the pirate romantasy full of its own lore and mythology making it an excellent read for anyone looking for a seafaring read that is familiar and entirely new at the same time. I'll be eagerly looking onto the horizon for the second book so we can uncover more of the mystery behind Syn and get more of her taking absolutely no shit from anyone, god or not.

When Stars Become Shadows provides a gripping, dark, NA fantasy novel with morally grey characters, unbelievable plot developments and a little bit of spice, whilst also sending a positive message about female empowerment and the importance of women embracing their body autonomy.

I loved the range of characters Emmie incorporated into this novel. There were characters I adored (Emersyn), some characters that had me second guessing their loyalties with the flick of a page (Killian and the crew), and some characters I absolutely could not stand in the slightest (Mal). I loved experiencing the drastic change in emotions these characters bought out of me in their interactions throughout the book. As well as this, Emersyn’s personal character development left me floored. She is such a strong, relatable character and although she had a troubled past, she pushed through this and was determined not to let it stop her getting what she wants.

I can honestly say, I had theories about where the plot was going and I was completely and utterly wrong, I don’t think I ever could have predicted what I was going to read in the last fifth of the book. Emmie took my breath away with the ending, the cliffhanger has ruined me and I need book two like, yesterday.

I read this as part of a readalong and I genuinely struggled not to finish the book on the first day, I really enjoyed it and I cannot wait for the next book.

I’m sorry to be one of the few bringing this book’s rating down, but it simply makes no sense. The premise is interesting, but the story is so poorly constructed it was painful to carry on. (Minor spoilers ahead) A woman is forced to work as a prostitute for 7 years until she finally manages to run away after having to kill someone, and that same night she gets super horny for this captain and lets him pleasure her? With no traumatic response after so many years of sex as something violent? And then she thinks she’s entitled to demand all the time to be told what goes on on the ship she has just sneaked onto, as if she owns the place? Then she buys a woman’s indenture to “free” her, but instead signs her over to the captain, and then gets jealous when the woman tries to argue she can work for him to make herself useful, imagining she’s suggesting she can sleep with him? WHAT?
Also there’s so much internal monologue all the time which not only is boring writing but also makes you dislike the MC even more because she makes no sense.
Sorry, hard pass.

Syn is a woman indentured into prostitution and has suffered years of abuse. She escapes making her way to a ship to get away and start a new life. However she ends up getting entangled in a plot between her bosses arch rival Captain Killian O'Donnell and the Lost Lord Of Souls. A plot involving murder, sirens, pirates, gods and bargains.
Syn is a complex character, a victim of abuse and her behaviours show this. After imprisonment for so long she starts to find out who she is and what she is capable of. The world was also really interesting, both gritty and magical.
I wasn't particuarly invested in the 'romance' and was more interested in Syn's journey of emancipation. I saw the twist at the end coming but I'm still intrigued as to what is going on with Malakai and think things aren't as they seem. Entertaining read with a heroine you root for.

This book was a couple of firsts for me... my first read along with the Butterfly Book Club, and my first pirate book!
And I must say, I thoroughly enjoyed it.
The world building is great, the characters are well written, the steam is hot (tho there isn't loads of it), the plot is complex and brilliant... and the cliffhanger is a sodding killer!
I absolutely cannot wait for the second part of this duet!!!
Reading as part of the read along, we read set chapters each week and then discussed on a Sunday, and I have to say it's such a fun way to do a group read! It also really tested my resolve to not go ahead and finish the book early 😂.
Definitely recommend both this book, and the butterfly book club ❤️

It's always good to find a well-written pirate book

My favorite thing for sure was the setting and aesthetic of the world. Life on a pirate ship with port stops full of scum and villainy is definitely something I love, and this book is full of that.
I also enjoyed the relationship between the protagonist and Captain Killian. The spicy scenes between them were well written, and kept enough focus on character throughout to not feel gratuitous. I tend to be indifferent to spicy scenes, so I wasn't bothered, and just enjoyed the push and pull off the relationship dynamic, but if you're sensitive to spicy scenes, be warned that they are very present in this book. If you're the type to enjoy the spice, this book does it well.
