For fans of The Jerry McNeal Series comes a full-length, standalone Jerry McNeal novel, with Jerry, Gunter and a cast of lively spirits who are sure to entertain.
When Jerry McNeal and Gunter are asked to travel to the Old West town of Deadwood, South Dakota to check out some mysterious happenings, they jump at the chance to explore the historic town. Equally exciting, Jerry and his ghostly K-9 partner soon find themselves walking the streets with legendary gunfighters and dodging the daily arrival of a phantom stagecoach that still brings age-old spirits to town.
In a story within a story, disabled Marine veteran Tyler Jones, aka Jonesy, unknowingly rents an apartment in the same historic town. Hiding in the shadow of his former self, Jonesy soon finds himself pushed out of his comfort zone by Grandma Lilly, the lively spirit of a former Deadwood madam determined to help the man realize his worth and help him heal the heart of Juanita Stim, the widowed mother who rents him a room in her house overlooking the legendary city.
When Jonesy finds out his old friend, the psychic medium, is in town, he asks Jerry to stop in and speak with the Deadwood madam to see if he can uncover what is preventing her spirit from leaving the house.
Will Jerry be able to help Madam Lillian walk the streets of Deadwood once more, or is she destined to live within the prison of her home for all of time?
A fun-filled ghostly adventure with a hint of romance, Spirit of Deadwood is for those who dare to believe in the unbelievable.

It's not bad. It just seems a bit contrived compared to the preceding books in the series. What's with the dog farts of doom? Also, Gunter not being around at critical points is uncharacteristic. There seem to be segments missing, as the backstory of Jerry's friend is told in big jumps.
I have read all the Jerry McNeal books and enjoyed them, but this one kept jumping all over the place from past to present and character to character. It was so fragmented there didn't seem to be a plot. I'm hoping the next one is a good as the first ones.
I can't wait for the NEXT book to come out!! Poor Jerry is so exhausted after everything he went through in this one that he is just about at the end of his robe with the agency and ready to throw in the towel so he can have a normal life! Although he NEVER really WILL since the woman he wants to settle down with for the rest of his life has a young daughter Max who ALSO has premonitions and sees ghosts like he does! Let alone his ghost dog brought home a hybrid puppy "offspring" that's half ghost dog and half live dog that they have to train so no one is the wiser! I can't WAIT for the next book to come out to see what happens next!
The Spirit Of Dead wood did not disappoint. The characters, both living and spirit, come to life. Houdini, who only has a small role in this book is going to be quite the character in the next, I'm sure. I can relate to Jonesy's lack of memory of the motorcycle accident. I to suffered one of those and have absolutely no recollection of the crash. I remember the moment prior but not the impact. It was a very vivid and true to life scenario. I can't wait for the next Jerry McNeal book. Keep them coming,.
Nothing to do with the main story line. Just a poor side trip with a terrible story. Jerry again proves, no matter how many times he is around ghosts he's still surprised when a ghost is the cause of the case. No matter how much evidence there is Jerry is such a poor detective, he has to get slapped in the face before he figures out the answer to the case. Thank god for the women around him or I don't think he would find his way to the bathroom. Good grief enough with the "Bud" beer already!
I have read all the books in this series, and am going to be on tender hooks waiting for the next one in August. The character development has been great, carrying you through from book to book as you learn more about the main character. I hope the author continues writing long enough to get Jerry married, and maybe become a dad to his own child. The spirits he encounters offer a wide variety of emotions, from frightening to loving, to hilarious. Thank you, Ms. Burton, for hours of great entertainment!
This is a very amusing and stunning story. I found the story line to convoluted and hard to stay in line with the book! I very much enjoyed reading this story even though at times it was also not quite as refined as the other stories bar been! I will also say that this story is some great reading material! I fully enjoyed the story even though I had to stop and reread several pages (sometimes not being able to understand what the characters were doing). It's definitely a book worth reading!!
I am from South Dakota, which is why I was originally drawn to the book. Inc I started reading it, I found I was drawn to much more than the location! This book seamlessly weaves between narratives of the characters, connecting the dots at just the right moment. There are a lot of ghost stories out there, but I have never read one that has as creative a concept as this one! From one author to another, kudos! This is book is an excellent start to your series! I will definitely be reading the rest, as I am now hooked!
I enjoy this series, but this book felt rushed at the end and the cliff hanger is more like the author just stopped writing rather than left us waiting for the next instalment.
Jerry heads to Deadwood on a secret mission with Gunter. Along the way he has some interactions with ghosts and we see how Jonestown from the marines is doing. Grandma Lillian is a hoot and unknowingly created a potential government scandal. Jerry does his mission but also shares his opinion on it. The colorful descriptions of the scenes in Deadwood and the ghosts were entertaining and I had quite a few chuckles with this story. The ending lets us know where his next adventures will take us and with at least two of the ghosts we will see more of!
Jerry's step into the Magic of Dead wood delivers another taste of psychic living. A mystery to solve based on Jerry's psychic ability once again ,this time , involving a friend ,could be a blessing ,or a curse..This continues in the series to give us the insight into the responsibility of psychic gifts while entertaining . I truly enjoy this series, and await the next book.
I always enjoy this series and have already preordered the next book. According to the dedication, it was Ms. Burton's mother that insisted that Gunter stay in the series. I'd also like to add my thank you. He's my favorite character. And Houdini is also a fun addition. Also, whoever does the covers for these books does a great job. The dog on the cover is what drew me to this series in the first place.
It took me awhile to get into this book because I had too many others I was reading. Once I started it was a quick and easy read. It was hard to put down. Jerry and Gunter were sent assignment to discover what happened with a one night stand of a highly ranked government official. Jerry is reunited with an old marine buddy to solve this problem. I recommend this book to those who enjoy fantasy and supernatural stories. It’s a good series.
It just seems so right for Jerry's latest assignment to be in historic Deadwood, trying to find a woman who seduced a very high profile man, called Mr X. Not only does Jerry have to be careful not to be run over by a stagecoach that visits the town daily, although most tourists can't see it, but he finds his old friend Jonesy, and needs to solve another mystery, this time with lots of ghosts!
I think this book would do with a second read. As other readers have pointed out it skips in places and is sometimes hard to follow. I think with a second read the book becomes much more enjoyable as the reader has an inkling of what is going on. But besides that, I loved this book, couldn't stop after I got started. I also liked that it was longer that the others in the series. Recommend reading.
I have fallen in love with Jerry and Gunter. I have read everyone of the stories in the series, and had to wait for Spirit of Deadwood to premier. I really was in a panic because I thought it was the last of the series. Thankfully you are continuing and I have the grueling wait to August.
I like these books as they’re fun to read and keep me engaged enough to stay up into the wee hours of the morning unless I can find a stopping place. I often have insomnia anyway so as long as I’m awake I may as well be entertained not counting the hours until I fall asleep.
This book not only continues the story of Jerry, Gunter, and their family, but contains a nice sub-plot: the story of one of Jerry's friends that he met in the military. It's a moving story, and an upper! I'm glad the author decided to keep doing Jerry-and-Gunter (et al) stories!
This book in this series was tremendous! It takes you back to the west in the 1800's. Some of the spirits were true to character. Though dead, they believed they were still alive. There are some shenanigans and also some very intense times. I know you will love this series as much as I do.
Once again, Jerry McNeal and Gunter are on a case and it is in Deadwood, South Dakota. Full of ghosts. Jerry is busy with ghosts and busy in his personal life. Enough said - no spoilers. I enjoy these ghost events and Jerry's and Gunter's means of dealing with them. Just enough suspense (without horror-filled descriptions) to satisfy me.
I love these books and can’t wait for the next one to come out ! The characters are well developed and lovable and make you really care about them and what happens in their lives. Looking for the next book and hoping it will be as good as the previous ones! Thank you for writing them, Sherry!
This book just like the others is a hoot. Jerry and Guntner are on another ghostly adventure that gave me lots of chuckles and a few outright guffaws. It ended like the others with one case solved and another on the horizon. Now I'm left waiting for the next one which I have already pre-ordered.
I am intrigued by ghost stories . I love Sherry's books. It is hard to put them down. I am also originally from Port Huron , MI. I know the areas of MI that she discusses in her books. I now reside in Yorktown, VA and was astonished as she discussed this area in one of her books. I have read a!l of the series and can't wait for more!!!!
Jonesy relocated to Deadwood, South Dakota, met and married and inherited a ghost. Jerry is sent to Deadwood to investigate an incident and finds it involves Monday's ghost, Lillian, A former Madam. While in Deadwood Jerry meets several ghosts. The story shows imagination and humor. Great author.
Great read. Got a little lost in there between the story within the story. I eventually caught on. Had to go back a reread a few chapters. All in all it was a good book. I must say not as good as some of the others but still enjoyable. As always keep writing and I will keep reading. Thank you.
I have traveled through the novellas that make up the series to this point, and enjoyed them, but was tiring of Granny, who was kind of a stock character grandmother. Then romance bloomed, and the story fizzled while Jerry got mushy. This entry became more interesting. Three stories blend together to a satisfying climax. I was well entertained.
I loved this! It was nice to have some added characters and to read their stories. I also liked all the spirits associated with Deadwood. Makes me want to go back there. Jerry has changed so much since the beginning of the series, so refreshing to see him happy. Gunter is still a clown, just like my GSD. Love this series!
This is a great series but this book is not as good as the ones that came before it. This one felt sloppy and convoluted and rushed, like the author's heart was just not in it. A little more about Juanita and Jonesy would have been nice too. The end kind of jumped out of nowhere with over simplified explanations that left me feeling mostly unsatisfied.
Needed something lighter to read when I discovered this series-totally love it. Love the stories, the characters, the humor and the writing style itself. Not sure as many people use the word "ain't", but not offended by it. Since I started reading the series, I have gotten next to nothing else done. Would recommend it to anyone.
