Burning Secret
In 1844 Enoch Price was born into poverty. An ambitious youth, he becomes a bare-knuckle fighter amongst London’s underworld. In debt to a violent and unscrupulous moneylender and facing ruin and imprisonment, he escapes to Jacksonville, Florida, abandoning his wife and three young daughters, a decision that will haunt him for the rest of his life. From the first page is was IN! This book is captivating right from the start with Enoch finding himself in court after getting tied up in some dodgy dealings before reinventing himself as Harry in Jacksonville. What follows is a incredibly well written story and I love that feeling that his past is always just nipping at his heels, it’s an exhausting (in a good way) read that kept me turning, I couldn’t imagine having the strength and memory to keep up living a lie like that! It fascinates me that this story has some basis in truth and I loved the additional information at the end of the book that filled in some of the gaps and the historical information about the family connection but actually throughout the book it felt like the time and space element was spot on and you can clearly tell the author has done some serious research to get this right.
All in all a brilliant read and I thoroughly recommend giving this one a go!

Burning Secret is well researched and written. Reading this book I was transported back to the 19th century and what it was like to be flat broke. The attention to detail is amazing and intriguing. I learned a lot about what life was like and the struggles people faced. I also love a good family saga and was immediately sucked in.
The book begins with Enoch in England and marriage to Eliza. They have three daughters and Enoch became involved in illegal activities forcing him to flee to Canada then New York then Florida. Where he works and befriends the owner. When Nick dies Enoch (now Harry) takes over and he quickly becomes very successful. Though he misses Eilza and has regrets.
Overall, I really enjoyed this book and learned a lot about American History as well as the era in general. I enjoyed the multigenerational aspect and the impacts choices have on our futures

Facing imprisonment, Enoch flees England for a new life in America, with a new identity. Now with a job and somewhere to live, he wants his family to join, but it starts to become very clear that his wife has no intention of following with their children. What follows is a bigamous marriage, successful businesses and a lot of power. But even though his life becomes a far cry from the slums and poverty he knew back in England, he never quite forgets his family.

If I were to travel back in time, I imagine life would look pretty close to how R J Lloyd described it. I could picture the poverty and slums of England, and I could picture the building of Enoch's life in America. The imagery is raw and powerful.
Once you start reading this book, it is so hard to imagine that this is based on someone's life, and I mean that in the sense of the amount he experienced. I imagine Enoch did more in five years than I'll do in a lifetime. There is also a section at the end of the book showing all the people within, a bit about them and when they died. I didn't realise how many of these characters were based on reality or how much research R J Lloyd must have done. Of course, we will never truly know their feelings from the time, but I definitely think R J Lloyd did a brilliant job connecting all the facts with plausible possibilities.

Burning Secret is a historical fiction novel with a connection that makes it even more intriguing- it’s written by the great-great-grandson of the man at the centre of the story. This made it instantly stand out for me knowing this story is rooted in real history. That personal connection added an extra layer of weight to an already compelling narrative, and it definitely made me read it with more curiosity.
A gripping tale filled with ambition and corruption, the drama started almost immediately. I found Harry Mason to be a morally grey character- driven, very intelligent - and ruthless. I thought his rise through society was completely compelling, but his success was mixed with a lot of deception. No matter how far Harry run, his past was there as a constant reminder of the crime and betrayal he left in his wake.
This is a story about identity, consequence, and the cost of becoming someone new. Fantastically well researched and executed. And what a privilege to be able to write about your own family history.

Burning Secret was an excellent book. The story was really good and I thoroughly enjoyed the concept. The cover is understated but eye-catching. I love the colour palette and the blends. The imagery is good too. It gives a bit of an eerie feel! The writing is excellent and the story flows really well. I loved the language and imagery. The tone was perfect for the genre. I could really tell that a lot of hardwork and effort had gone into researching the mid 1800s to early 1900s. It was appreciated! The setting is good and is mostly in the USA. We did have small part in London. I loved the characters. They all fit into their roles and were well written. I liked Enoch and I enjoyed how his story evolved. I definitely recommend this book.

A great family saga
A Burning Secret was written, and researched. The saga starts in England with Enoch and follows his life. He first marries Eliza and has three daughters. After some unwise and illegal dealings, he flees first to Canada and then to New York and Florida. He sends for Eliza and his daughters but she is hesitant.
He works in a bar and makes friends with the owner. When the owner dies, he takes over the bar. His saga continues, making him a wealthy man. His thoughts continue to remember his life with Eliza and he has regrets.
This book had me captured from the very beginning. I enjoy reading family sagas and multigenerational journeys. There were many characters in this novel and at times it was difficult following them. I wish I’d known the author documents them all at the end. I would recommend readers to reference this, if there is any confusion.

Enoch is hanging on to life outside of prison by the skin of his teeth – it’s only a question of time until his troubles catch up with him. He has a wife and three daughters to think of, and he decides to go on the run. With a purpose, with the promise of new beginnings for all of them.
Except it doesn’t work out that way, well for him it does, as he reinvents himself and makes his mark on and in a new country, whilst always thinking about his loved ones. His wife no longer trusts him, and in the end Enoch, now Harry, leaves all aspects of the old life in the past and turns to pastures greener.
In the afterword, there is a lot of information about familial connections and their fate, historical and relevant figures to the story. What I would like to know was just how much of the story is based on fact or fiction. Given the extra information I would say the author has merely filled in the blanks and created likely scenarios, regardless of whether they are often seen from a more positive and/or negative perspective given the the main character is family, and there is no way to reproduce how the first family and wife really felt about the way he abandoned them.
If he was truly tormented then surely he would have done something about it, but then the house of cards would have collapsed, right? It’s easier to imagine that life goes on, regardless of his presence, but the real question is whether his presence and/or the status he acquired would have made a difference to their lives. The reality of a woman and three small children being left behind in those circumstances – it would have been tough.
It’s a fascinating story that can be interpreted in different ways. You can see the deception and the fact this man led a lifetime of lies or see the man who navigated another path for himself, and made a more positive impact in the second part of his story. Either way it is one heck of a story, and life.

I absolutely loved this book so much!
I sometimes struggle with historical fiction as there is so much fact that the author tries to fit in - that the fiction seems forced and this becomes quite pedestrian to read.
This was absolutely not the case with this book!!
Right from the start I was totally invested in Enoch's life. His troubles, his family, his journey and subsequent adventures in America.
I can't believe that someone fit so much into one life - worked so hard for what he had and survived so much over that time.
Enoch was born in the slums of London and lived a life of poverty. He worked hard to keep his family, but after being cheated out of business, he's declared bankrupt and faces imprisonment.
He flees to America without his family - who he intended to follow on later - and begins a new life there.
Once again, working hard to make a life for himself, get a job and get settled ready to welcome his family to a new life free from worry.
Things take a different turn and what follows is a fascinating story of Enoch's life in America where he becomes rich beyond belief and lives a full life - but finds that his wealth did not bring him the peace and happiness he'd hoped for.
The writing style was so easy to read. Every event flowed nicely and there was so much happening throughout. There were no dull moments. I also found it quite emotive - really drew me in and held my interest.
This book is based on the true events of Enoch's life and I loved that the author is Enoch's great, great grandson - it really did feel personal which added to its uniqueness for me.
This is going straight onto my favourites list (and may possibly remain the only historical fiction on there!) - I loved it so much and am definitely going to miss Enoch.

Burning Secret by R J Lloyd is a brilliantly crafted tale which encompasses a world of crime, betrayal, sacrifice and new beginnings. It follows the story of Enoch Prince who, in debt and facing violent retribution, flees from London to start a new life in America. In assuming the name Harry Mason, Enoch forsakes his wife and children who he left back in his homeland.
There is a constant thrill to this story in the sense that Harry’s past and his lies stalk his every move and every turn. This creates a sort of tension throughout his life as it feels like everything he has worked for to start again will fall apart at every turn. As the lies pile up, so does the tension, and by the second half of the book I was enthralled by the characters and the storyline. I have read a lot of historical fiction and a lot of American fiction, but this time period and location is something I haven’t read a lot of, so it was very refreshing to see such a unique setting.
I really like the character of Enoch/Harry, who, despite his actions back in London, uses his wit and dedication to craft himself into a successful business in Jacksonville. Despite his best efforts, Harry cannot escape from the same pitfalls he experienced in London, leading him to guard his secrets even more closely.
There is a good sense of place and time, and I liked the historical references that litter each page (as well as the helpful summary at the end). I liked the way that the real world merged into the fictitious elements of this book, so much so I don’t know where one starts and the other ends. This is a rare achievement and the sign of a great storyteller.

A caveat: I have known the author for many years and he invited me to read the first draft of this book. I could have been polite and withheld any assessment. It is though, imo, an impeccably researched and wonderfully told tale. I read it in three days and immediately encouraged Roger to publish.
From the court scene at page 1, through to the last page of the afterword, this is a dramatic account of the real events that surrounded the fantastic life of Enoch Price/Harry Mason, a fugitive; bigamist; multi-millionaire; hotelier; and senior politician. Genealogical research and historical context helps the author bring ‘Harry’ to vivid realisation. The book reads like a screenplay, moving effortlessly from a Hogarthian image of Victorian London, to the wide open vista of pioneer settlement in the newly created state of Florida.
The late 19th Century enabled any person, with the wit, guile and ambition of Harry Mason, to become whatever they dreamed of……It seems that Harry had big dreams!
The subtle skill of the writer, here, is to thread a sensitive and reflective pull to the past life of the protagonist, even as his escapades in the New World become ever more sensational. ‘Burning Secret’ is both a morality tale as well as an adventure story. I heartily, and genuinely, recommend it to fans of either genre.

This book is what I would describe as a ripping yarn. They say the best stories are based on facts or real events and this is certainly true of Burning Secret.
Written in a style contemporary with the events, it reminds me of the work of Robert Louis Stephenson and Charles Dickens.
It is well paced and has a strong narrative enough to keep you wanting to find out more each page.
For those both wanting to enjoy a gripping story and to get a flavour of the life of immigrants in bygone America, this is a perfect read. It certainly opened my eyes to the struggles of survival in those times. It is full of genuine historical facts that help create the genuine atmosphere of the events that take place in the characters' lives.

Historical fiction has been a favourite genre of mine for a few years now and this is a great example of that. Enoch/Harry is such an unlucky lucky man who we meet in London and follow his life from there to finding riches in America.
He has nothing, gets everything. Has a wife, loses a wife. Has a family & friends, loses both. But along the way makes a fortune and becomes famous, saving the city and building it up. He’s such a brilliant main character, and you warm to him almost immediately.
This is definitely historical at its best, describing the building of a man, new life and new country.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. From the first page, I was immersed and engaged in the era. Enoch/Harry’s journey from his life in London to new beginnings in Jacksonville is brilliantly told. The story moves at a good pace and yet the level of detail allowed me to feel like I was there alongside the characters. A well researched, thought-provoking and entertaining read.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book and immediately warmed to Enoch/Harry and loved reading about his journey from his life in London to a new start in Jacksonville.
Through such detailed writing from the author, you really get to know the characters and their surroundings, I will definitely be reading more by the author.

Burning Secret is a fictional account of the life of Enoch Price – or Harry Mason as he became to be known. Enoch is the author's great-great-grandfather who disappears from English records, only to reappear in the US under a different name. New beginnings...
The novel begins with his trial for bankruptcy. Having been cheated out of his profitable business of making corsets for ladies, he ponders his options. His wife, Eliza, and their three daughters would face hardships, with him imprisoned.
An idea forms in his head. How about he flees to Canada and sets up a new business in corsetry, or some such? Eliza and the girls could follow, and they could build a new life. But Eliza isn't keen. Undeterred, Enoch buys passage on a ship bound for Quebec, determined to prove her wrong.
But on the way, he learns that Canada has an extradition agreement with Britain, which would still leave him vulnerable. On his arrival, he decides to reinvent himself, calling himself Henry Mason. He also buys a train passage to New York. There was no extradition agreement, and there were opportunities to find work and establish yourself. On his journey, he meets a well-off American lady, who calls him Harry, and the name sticks.
Hating New York, he follows an advertisement to Florida, where he swiftly finds work as a bartender. Soon he becomes good friends with the saloon owner, Nicky, and his Danish wife, Agnes. As he puts in the hard work, Jacksonville is expanding and trade is booming. He regularly sends Eliza money and urges her to join him, but she dithers. Staying with his remarried mother, she wants for nothing, so their correspondence grows less and less.
Then he meets Bessie, who thinks he's a widower (the story he told people on arrival). After another year, he asks her to marry him, as it is expected in his circle and people would wonder. From Eliza, only silence, despite his letters.
Then fate has a surprise in store for him and his fortune increases. But then disaster strikes in form of the Yellow Fever. How will Harry and his small family fare? Find out in the novel!
I didn't expect to like Enoch/Harry. He abandoned his family to avoid prison, leaving his wife and his mother to care for their three daughters. But RJ Lloyd has managed to turn Harry into a really likeable character. A fortune seeker, perhaps, aware of how to beat the system. An opportunist, with a dash of luck. A bigamist, too, but one with a conscience and responsibility for his first wife. But it's not difficult to like Harry, as we follow his exploits in America.
As his fortune and standing increases, Harry is fully aware of his fraudulous background, and keen to keep tabs on his past. Perhaps that's why only one photograph of him exists, that the author could find.
The description of locations, of the poverty on one hand, and the wealthy elite on the other, paints a realistic image of the era. It's not overdone, but it feeds a reader's emotions. I felt transported into a changing, growing America with its opportunities, but also with its concurrent crime, exploitation of workers, and daily dangers immigrants faced.
The author's research into the era, the habits, dress code, and social attitudes is impeccable. He brings Harry's environment vividly to life – wherever Harry is. A highly recommended read.
The novel begins with his trial for bankruptcy. Having been cheated out of his profitable business of making corsets for ladies, he ponders his options. His wife, Eliza, and their three daughters would face hardships, with him imprisoned.
An idea forms in his head. How about he flees to Canada and sets up a new business in corsetry, or some such? Eliza and the girls could follow, and they could build a new life. But Eliza isn't keen. Undeterred, Enoch buys passage on a ship bound for Quebec, determined to prove her wrong.
But on the way, he learns that Canada has an extradition agreement with Britain, which would still leave him vulnerable. On his arrival, he decides to reinvent himself, calling himself Henry Mason. He also buys a train passage to New York. There was no extradition agreement, and there were opportunities to find work and establish yourself. On his journey, he meets a well-off American lady, who calls him Harry, and the name sticks.
Hating New York, he follows an advertisement to Florida, where he swiftly finds work as a bartender. Soon he becomes good friends with the saloon owner, Nicky, and his Danish wife, Agnes. As he puts in the hard work, Jacksonville is expanding and trade is booming. He regularly sends Eliza money and urges her to join him, but she dithers. Staying with his remarried mother, she wants for nothing, so their correspondence grows less and less.
Then he meets Bessie, who thinks he's a widower (the story he told people on arrival). After another year, he asks her to marry him, as it is expected in his circle and people would wonder. From Eliza, only silence, despite his letters.
Then fate has a surprise in store for him and his fortune increases. But then disaster strikes in form of the Yellow Fever. How will Harry and his small family fare? Find out in the novel!
I didn't expect to like Enoch/Harry. He abandoned his family to avoid prison, leaving his wife and his mother to care for their three daughters. But RJ Lloyd has managed to turn Harry into a really likeable character. A fortune seeker, perhaps, aware of how to beat the system. An opportunist, with a dash of luck. A bigamist, too, but one with a conscience and responsibility for his first wife. But it's not difficult to like Harry, as we follow his exploits in America.
As his fortune and standing increases, Harry is fully aware of his fraudulous background, and keen to keep tabs on his past. Perhaps that's why only one photograph of him exists, that the author could find.
The description of locations, of the poverty on one hand, and the wealthy elite on the other, paints a realistic image of the era. It's not overdone, but it feeds a reader's emotions. I felt transported into a changing, growing America with its opportunities, but also with its concurrent crime, exploitation of workers, and daily dangers immigrants faced.
The author's research into the era, the habits, dress code, and social attitudes is impeccable. He brings Harry's environment vividly to life – wherever Harry is. And he shows us his ancestor’s ambitions – and his guilt. But with a rise in circumstances come uncomfortable choices. And Harry's conscience battles against some of his decisions, which adds a human touch.

Burning Secret takes us from 19th-century England, where our protagonist, soon-to-be Harry Mason, finds himself financially broken. Running from the law to escape "gaol," he embarks upon a journey to North America, finally settling in Jacksonville, Florida (I mean really, of all places, LOL).
From there, we get a sweeping biographical narrative of a man trying to carve out a life for himself. The only problem is, he actually still has a life back in England. Despite his successes, he is forever haunted by the family he left behind, and does his best to hide this fact from everyone around him.
Where Burning Secret shines is its historical accuracy and wonderful world-building. The author takes great lengths to explain the world in great detail. Although, at times I felt these words might be better spent strengthening the plot arc. I actually had to Google some of the names in the story as I was confused about whether this was a biography! The author's note at the beginning convinced me this was pure fiction.
There were times—Harry's attempt to remove a squatter for instance—when I literally couldn't put the book down. Other times, I felt many of the long explanations were completely unnecessary to the plot.
My main critique is that the theme of the book really didn't come to a peak until the very end. I was so itching to get a confrontation between his old family and new, and how he would resolve this. Ending the story so quickly was a bit of a letdown.
I gave the story 4 stars due to the great writing and vivid details that the author obviously took great care and time to research. It is an accomplishment and should be praised. For historical fiction fans of this time period, I would highly recommend it.

Now, I’m not usually a fan of period type dramas, until Burning Secret dropped through my door. It’s a suspense/ thriller/mystery all rolled up in one book. Set in 1844, in the slums and drudgery of London, we meet our main character Enoch, who as a young lad, decides that this type of life is not for him. He meets and marries the girl of his dreams, has children and seemingly the perfect life. But no, he has made a terrible mistake involving a terrible person, and has no choice but to flee to America to start all over again with his family left behind.
With a change of name, things start to look up, and he marries and has more lovely children. However, having two families who don’t know about each other, and businesses to run, the whirlpool of lies and deceit swirls ever closer and we see him almost lose his mind and his money due to the greed. The storyline had a nice flow and was one of those one-more-chapter kind of books that you want to read at the one sitting.
The book was an easy to read and well-paced book. Vivid descriptions of the places and people allowed the story to play in my head like a movie.
Fans of period dramas will love this, and I would also recommend it to fans of suspense and thrillers. I loved it!

I knew right away we were in good hands here. Lloyd paints the very first scene masterfully, choosing the perfect moment to introduce our protagonist. The prose is first class. Vivid, detailed, but never dull; the dialogue better than most books I have read. It is a very learned work and obviously a labour of love.
Lloyd also knows how to crank tension and insert shock when the book needs it, such as Price’s seemingly simple purchasing of a ticket to Canada and a stabbing that happens out of nowhere. My absolute favourite section was the yellow fever epidemic and all the horror it created, while the boxing match section that came after was hilarious.
I expected the protagonist to be a difficult character to like. But even when he makes a difficult choice regarding family about a third of the way through the book (which, if you’d told me before reading, I’d have thought: I’m gonna hate this guy), it’s entirely understandable. His decisions as the book continues are all rooted in early misfortune and loss – not simple cruelty or greed for the sake of it.
One little flourish I noticed in this book of many characters – Lloyd mentions past actions when re-introducing characters that we have not seen in a while. This was a great touch.
To conclude, I could see this book being made into a TV series, since there are well-defined chapters. Lloyd, quite simply, is a master of his craft, this book his testament. It needs to become famous.

Historical fiction is not really a genre I read all that often, but this book sounded interesting so I thought I would give it a go, and I wasn’t disappointed at all. The story hits the ground running right from the start.
Our protagonist, Enoch, was born into poverty in London. As he grows up his life doesn’t get much better, he’s married with 3 children and he’s in debt to an unscrupulous Money lender who is out to get his money back.
Enoch does something that he will regret for the rest of his life, he leaves his wife and children behind and, via a couple of other places, he ends up in Jacksonville, Florida.
Now he has reinvented himself to be Harry Mason and he is starting afresh.
It’s very clear that the author has done his research in gathering a lot of correct historical information to include in the book. This makes the reading of it even more enjoyable.
The writing style was good and it flowed well as you’re reading it.
What will happen to Harry/Enoch in the end? Will his secrets bring his new life to a halt? You will have to read the book to find out.
A good book that I definitely recommend.

I find that sometimes, I need a book that I can really sink my bookish teeth into, as I like to put it, and this was that type of book. The Victorian era is one of my favourites to read about, and I felt the author wrote in a way that brought both the characters and their surroundings to life.
On first impressions, I found Enoch a very interesting character. I wondered if he was a person who had made some unwise choices, but such choices don't always reflect who we are.
As I carried on reading, I began to feel, in some strange way, that Enoch, or Harry, as he was later known, was a friend of mine, and I had known him for a long time. I had chosen to accompany him on his journey, and had to see him through all the hardships he faced.
Towards the end, I became emotional, thinking of all that had happened, and how much time had passed. This was a very cleverly written book, and something that I would recommend to fans of historical fiction, if you are in the mood for a wholesome read. This is the type of story that will stay with you once you've finished reading it.

I was kindly sent a free copy of this book as part of a book tour in exchange for an honest review. This was a well thought out and extensively researched historical fiction based on a real life person and true events. I was thoroughly engaged with the life of Enoch/Harry and was invested in his story and felt like I was journeying alongside him. Although he does some bad things (i am not going to go into detail as I don’t want to reveal any spoilers) we are still able to feel for him and want him to still do well. I found it amazing that I was able to root for an historical character like this and feel the struggles that he faced as if they were personal to me. I flew through this book within a day. It’s set within the 19th century across London and America but it flows seamlessly between the two locations and I felt a connection with the characters at all times. I learnt a lot of historical detail, especially in terms of the American History and I enjoyed seeing both sides of the family and the different generations as well. It’s nice that we have an epilogue giving us all the full historical dates and background as well after the fictional storyline has been told. 4 stars

Burning Secret by R J Lloyd is a historical fiction novel that combines family drama, crime, and political intrigue into the story of Enoch Price, who reinvents himself as Harry Mason after fleeing to America. Enoch/Harry's rise from criminal to politician in Florida makes for an immersive read.
The author is the great-great grandson of Enoch Price, which makes me appreciate the story even more!
Enoch's initial challenges in 19th century England get him embroiled in criminal activity, and rather than staying to clear his name, he flees to America, leaving his wife and children behind. There are attempted reconciliations, but ultimately, his wife and children are tired of his lies.
Enoch/Harry himself is unlikeable, a liar, and betters his own life by manipulating others. He is always looking over his shoulder, and this creates tension in the story.
The writing is very descriptive but a bit slow in parts, particularly in the early chapters.
Harry does sometimes feel remorse and is lonely - even as he becomes more successful.
Overall, I enjoyed the book. The author's dedication to research and the complex characters make this an interesting read.

Such a fascinating story! I was intrigued because this book is based on a real person and real events. I never heard of Enoch Price/Harry Mason. Being curious about history, I had to investigate! I read this book in one go because of how interesting Price/Manson’s journey was, how flawed he was, yet how much he accomplished, not to mention the twists and turns that his life took. The amount of historical research that the author has done clearly comes through in nearly every sentence in this well written book. The author is an excellent storyteller and makes this non-fiction story come alive. The author takes us along on a revealing dive into local politics and real estate development in Florida in the late 1800s and early 1900s against the background of the oppressive post-Civil War South, as well as the conditions in London for the working class, the trauma of WWI, and so much more. This book is packed with history. Readers of historical fiction and historical non-fiction will likely enjoy this book. This is an excellent book and deserves more readership.

This book is my type of read. Historical fiction but based on real events and people. Starting in the 1880’s Enoch Price is facing bankruptcy charges for dishonest trading and narrowly avoids debtors prison. There are wonderful descriptions of London at that time, the sordid back streets and tenements. His story moves to America with several personal changes as he attempts to reinvent himself. As his life unfolds I could not help but admire his hard work and determination to succeed, always secretly dogged by his torn loyalties and regrets. What a story of rags to riches, achieving power and privilege in a country not of his birth. I am sure everyone will judge his decisions but I warmed to his charismatic charm. I loved the Afterword and appreciated the amount of research the author must have completed to achieve such a book. I absolutely loved it and have looked Enoch up further myself, such was my interest. I highly recommend this book for readers who are historical fiction fans.

I am an avid reader and usually prefer the classics, and whodunnits. So, I wasn't sure if I would like this historical fiction based on real events. But "Burning Secret" turned out to be an exciting page-turning.
The plot unfolds like in the popular TV series Boardwalk Empire - set at the end of the 19th century: love, cheating, crime, ambition, pride, and secrets. This is very entertaining story! Harry's burning secret kept me on tenterhooks right to the last page.
The epilogue made the greatest impression on me when I found out that the characters in the book were real people and what happened to them afterwards. The author has done a great job of researching historical documents and has written a wonderful book. Without a doubt, Harry Mason would be proud of how the story of his life has been told.

It’s been a little while since I’ve read an historical fiction but this one didn’t disappoint.
There were so many events that happened in this book it was hard to believe that this was mostly fact not complete fiction. It really kept you turning the page and there was never a lull in the book.
There are a lot of characters in this book so that can be a little tricky to keep up with but I really loved Harry, he was a proper loveable rogue.
I really enjoyed that the end has a summary of what happened to the characters after the events of the book and I’m definitely interested in doing some more research into the life of Harry Mason.
I would 100% be reading more from R J Lloyd.
