Rate this book

Breaking Away by Elle James

3rd book in the Delta Force Strong series. Military romantic suspense novella.. Can be read as a stand-alone. Characters from the prior books are included but you don’t need to know their stories. Second chance troupe.

Run, fight, escape. Repeat.
Run, fight, escape. Repeat.
A fast paced story of a Delta Force team fighting the enemy while trying to protect a reporter.

Amusing interplay between the soldiers. Plus it was fun to revisit this team.
For me, the romance was confirmed in the last chapter which I was grateful for.
3.5 rounded up to 4 because of that last chapter.

Breaking Away is the third book in the Delta Force Strong series by Elle James, and it was not for me. I wanted to enjoy this one, as there was a lot of potential for edge-of-the-seat moments, yet it failed to grab me in the way I had hoped. This one felt much too flat for me, filled with characters explaining things that were obvious, and never quite packed the emotional punch it could have. A part of me questions whether I would have enjoyed this more if I’d known the characters better from other books, but I’m unsure – no one was fleshed out enough for me to have interest in them.

I’m clearly in the minority with this one, though.

Read as part of the Danger& Desire boxset. Unlike most books in that anthology, this one did deliver on the danger. We’re tossed in the middle of Afghanistan as our female MC is running for her life. She kills 3 badass Taliban fighters and just as another is about to kill her, an old flame pops by and saves her butt. Their rekindling ensues.... I might’ve gotten spoiled by Tess Geritsen’s writing of romance suspense cause the chemistry here didn’t really jive with me. Also, the book needs a serious round of edits; for such a short read it had a lot of mistakes and convoluted sentences that could’ve read much better.
I’m in the minority on this one judging by the other reviews so definitely give it a shot, but go in with lower expectations than mine.

I really liked Kylie and Mac’s story. Kylie is a reporter who becomes a target while trying to get her story. Mac and his teammates have to get her safely home.

“I’ve dreamed of holding you just like this for so long, I think I might still be dreaming.”

This story was action packed from page one! It is a second chance romance set amid danger in the Middle East.

recensione a cura del blog “Libri Magnetici" by Meghan

Coma andrà a finire? Non vi resta che leggerlo per scoprirlo…

A presto 😘

The Danger and Desire Anthology Novella:
5 stars
I received a copy of the steamy military based novella Breaking Away: A Delta Force Strong Novella Mac and Kylie by Elle James in the Danger and Desire eight book anthology and this review was given freely.
Intense and action packed from the beginning, this easy flowing fast paced second chance at love story has a few steamy scenes and although set in the Middle East during war time, with a fair amount of violence, the graphic level is low. A good introduction to the Fort Hood/Killeen, Texas Delta Force Team and a happy ending for Mac.
Cornered while trying to escape during a mission gone wrong and trying to protect her wounded guard and her cameraman,Texas born war correspondent Kylie Adams finds herself
rescued by her first love Delta Force operative Sean "Mac" McDaniel.

Breaking Away: Delta Force Strong Book 3 is written by Elle James. The book is well written and keeps you reading with its action. It gives a close view of Afghanistan from a close-up view.
Kylie was a journalist who was reporting on the fighting in Afghanistan. She had broken up with her boyfriend Mac when she was still in high school because she wanted to pursue her career and he wanted to pursue his in the army. They haven’t seen each other since. Now, she is on an assignment to film the extraction of an informant and to interview him. However, things have not gone quite right and she, her cameraman, the informant, and her Ranger escort are in an abandoned building hiding from the Taliban who are checking house by house for them. The Ranger is wounded and Kylie is the only one between them and death as she now has the Ranger’s weapon. She manages to shoot three Taliban as they come in one at a time. Now, four have come in at once and she doesn’t stand a chance. Just as the Taliban is going to shoot her, she is rescued by a member of Delta Force, none other than her Mac.
It is now up to Mac and his team to get them back to safety and then to protect Kylie from the Taliban as she is now on their wanted list. She killed the brother of a very important member of the Taliban and they have called for her death.
Will their past interfere in getting her to safety?

I first read a shortened version of this story in the danger and desire anthology that as released earlier this year I loved it then and I loved it even more in this extended form

Kylie and Mac fell in love when they where younger but he was about to start his special forces training and she wanted to be a reporter There two jobs and commitment from those jobs couldn't live side by side so they went their separate ways but neither has forgotten the other. Then Kylie is in Afghanistan embedded with a ranger group to bring in a Afghani national who has been assisting the US forces and his cover is blown The only thing is the taliban are determined to get him and make an example of him and there numbers are far higher than anyone expected them to be Soon the rangers are overrun and it will be Kylie as a Texan who learnt how to shoot from an early age that will have to defend them, but even she can't beat the numbers until a delta force team comes to her aid and who is a member of that team but non other than Mac he former lover. Now Mac and his team need to get Kylie out of Afghanistan as one of the men she killed was the leader's brother and he will not stand for that slur on his family name,. Can they keep her safe Cane they get her home and will Mac and Kylie finally admit that they still love one another and work at finding a way to get a HEA You will have to read to see

Errors and Plot Holes

The overall story was good, but the editing left a lot to be desired. There were a lot of grammatical and spelling errors/typos. Then there was the fact that although Dash found love in the previous book in this series, he kept making passes as Kylie, telling Mac if he screwed up, he'd throw his hat in the ring. Did Elle forget she gave Dash his own HEA already? I don't think Sunny Daye would appreciate her man's interest in other women. For me, the biggest issue with this book is the largest plot point of Kylie being hunted by the taliban for killing a leader's brother. The only problem with that is that the only people who could've seen her do it were killed, so there was no way anyone could've known who killed the guy. Especially when a team of Delta Force Operators were on site and would likely have gotten credited with the kill. I know, I know, creative license and all that, but if you expect readers to suspend disbelief and buy into your fiction, you have to give them a plausible reason to believe what you're selling. Maybe a witness conveniently nearby? Other than those things, the story was not too bad.

Breaking Away is a phenomenal contemporary romance by Elle James. Ms. James held me hostage with this one. She has once again delivered a well-written book and loaded it with lovable characters. Kylie is a reporter chasing a story in Afghanistan. When the Sergeant protecting her and her cameraman is shot she picks up his gun to defend them. When they were rescued by Mac's unit Kylie and Mac didn't have a moment being uncomfortable running into the old love of their lives. Mac and Kylie's story is packed with drama, humor, sizzle, action and suspense. I loved this book from start to finish and look forward to my next book by Elle James. Breaking Away is book 3 of the Delta Force Strong Series but can be read as a standalone. This is a complete book, not a cliff-hanger.

I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book that I received from Bookfunnel. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

A second chance read between Mac, a Delta and Kylie, a news correspondent who goes to war torn countries for her stories. They were in love until one walks away for their career and now years later, it still burns bright. While evading a terrorist out for Kylie’s blood, the two reconnect when Mac is tasked to guard Kylie and get her out of the country....will they live to get their second chance.
I liked these two, no drama and no fuss between them. There’s steam, suspense, action and great characters. A page turner and for a short read, packs a punch. Only reason I didn’t give it 5 stars is because there was no mention of the women in the lives of the men from the previous two books and Dash was flirty and throwing his hat in the ring for Kylie....what about Sunny? I didn’t like that the other women weren’t mentioned and the men acted like they didn’t exist.

The One Who Hurt Me

Mac and Kylie's story had a lot of action from the very beginning. It What's fast paced and intense. Here we have Kylie who is a war correspondent currently on assignment in Afghanistan. Things take a turn for the worst and never in her wildest dreams would she imagine being reunited with the man she hurt the most.I

Mac Isn't Afghanistan with his team hunting down a very evil Taliban member who has done numerous atrocities and they need to go to stop to it. Mac could not believe what he came upon, a tiny woman having shot 3 Taliban members and now going to have her head blown off by another. He realizes it is the woman left him with scars in his life.

The Plot was really good but I couldn't rate it higher because it had too many grammatical errors, which was surprising because I've read almost everything this author has written and had not seen any until this story.

Delta Sean 'Mac' McDaniels and war correspondent Kylie Adams’ breakup was painful but sparks she still shown when he came to the rescue. Pinned down by the Taliban, and their sole escort down, Kylie’s the only shooter, her sure shot aim kills the brother of the most vindictive notorious target the military is after; he’ll be insulted a woman shot him while thwarting his capture of the traitor by her side. Kylie was down to a few bullets when Mac killed the trio about to kill her.

Mac and his team get Kylie to their base and Mac’s charged with her safekeeping. Catching up on old times, Mac and Kylie intimate they’re over their once all important careers behind and found someone to settle down with though neither seems to realize they mean each other. Unable to find Kylie at her hotel, Taliban forces lob warning fire at the base to drive her out. Soon the team is racing across Kabul with Taliban on their heels.

I voluntarily read and reviewed the Advanced Reader Copy of this book. Another book by Elle James that grabs you and throws you right into the action. Kylie is a war correspondent in Afghanistan. She has been working very hard and very long to get this job. Kylie and her cameraman and their military protector have to run for their lives in war torn Afghanistan. The sergeant gets shot and it’s up to Kylie to protect them all. When she has trouble keeping up with insurgents, a Delta Team arrives to save her. Who does she see but her ex Sean “Mac” McDaniel; the man she broke up with to pursue her career.
Mac can’t believe his eyes. Once he see her he doesn’t want to lose her again. The adventure continues. Shooting, killing, chasing, hiding, kidnapping are all in this exciting adventure. I loved it, 5 stars. Looking forward to the next one.

Here she is in Afghanistan. Kylie Adams has fulfilled her dream of becoming a war correspondent. To achieve that dream she gave up the love of her life Sean "Mac" McDaniel. Finding herself in a very tense, dangerous situation being chased by Taliban soldiers Kylie never expected to be saved by Mac and his Delta team. Mac was shocked to find the woman he never stopped loving in a hut with a Taliban soldier holding a gun to her head. From that point on Kylie and Mac face even more danger in this thrilling book. This story is jam-packed with action. I loved how Kylie and Mac were reunited and found their rekindled love. Ms. James does an excellent job of telling this reunion story in this book.

Mac is Delta Force, with his crew in Afghanistan to sweep for insurgents who keep popping up everywhere.
Kylie is a war reporter who Mac finds in a hut with her videographer and, their wounded escort, shooting 3 out of 4 of the insurgents who had just run into the hut, when Mac and, his crew come in and, take the rest out. Mac is shocked to realize that he is now assigned to be Kylie's bodyguard. Mac and Kylie have a history but, their history is that they were young and, too impatient to fulfil their dreams to consider spending the rest of their lives together. Problem is that, neither Mac nor Kylie has ever met anyone else that they could possibly love because, they never got over each other.
This is an action packed, STEAMY, roller coaster ride that you don't want to miss!!

Action packed from page one, and it's from our heroine, Kylie, a war correspondent. She's saving her Ranger escort and cameraman and plucking off targets as the minutes go by. But then she's saved by a Delta Force operative, the one man she left behind many, many years ago, Mac. It's even faster paced after that, Mac and his team are tasked with escorting Kylie and Josh out of Afghanistan, and it's a wild ride, literally. There's a short amount of time for Mac and Kylie to reconnect and figure out if they can make it out in the real world. Every page offers a different risk to them and every page has you clenching to see if they will make it. Wished the story was longer!

Kylie is a journalist reporting on the war. The Ranger helping her and her cameraman has been shot. She grabs his gun and ends up killing 3 men. Another man shows up and she is completely shocked when she sees who it is.
Mac and his Delta buddies have been brought in to help the Rangers. When he pulls the dead guy off and sees who is holding the gun pointing at him, he can't believe his eyes.
Mac and Kylie had been tight and he had wanted to spend the rest of his life with her. Unfortunately, she wasn't ready for that. She was more committed to fulfilling her dream. Now, here they both are years later.
One of the men Kylie had killed was the taliban's brother. Now she has a price on her head
Will they all make it back to the states? Will Mac and Kylie get their second chance?

Action packed from the start this novella tells the story of war reporter Kylie Adams and Delta Operative Sean 'Mac' McDaniel from Elle James Delta Force Strong series. Kylie and Mac loved and lost each other years ago when different dreams and careers won out against their young love but neither has forgotten. Brought together again by fate in Afghanistan, both older and wiser they realise the love didn't die but can Mac protect Kylie from the threat hanging over her as they battle for their second chance at HEA? Definitely on the short and sweet side but has everything I like - action, drama, some heat, alphas and a strong heroine. Looks like I've found a new series to read!

I read a condensed version of this story in the Danger and Desire anthology last month. I read so much and have a dreadful memory for stories after I'm done, which in this case was great because I forgot the ending lol.
A Delta hero and a war correspondent, she is someone from his past. Can they have their second chance? Compromise will be needed for a relationship as both are rarely home. Is he ready to retire or is she ready to pull back and fulfill her dream of family.
The extras in this edition gave us a lot of action and danger, I just couldn't put it down.
Great story, brilliant plot, I loved it.

Kylie has enjoyed her career as a journalist but her latest assignment finds her in a dire situation. Her decision to do the right thing and protect the people she was traveling has resulted in the death of a dangerous enemy and now she and entourage are on the run for their lives.

Mac is part of the Delta Force when his latest assignments reunites him with the only woman he has ever loved. Years earlier their careers drove them apart but he is on a mission to not only protect but to have a second chance as well.

This story takes us on an action packed adventure which balances intrigue and romance that will keep you entertained from beginning to end.

Kylie is a journalist covering the war in Afghanistan. Mac is a Delta force soldier. They also shared a romantic history that Kylie's walked away from in order to be successful at her work. When things fall through and Kylie ends up killing a Taliban leader's relative, she's got a price on her head. Mac and his team have to keep her safe till she can leave the country. Giving them time to get to know each other all over again, trouble is with their demanding careers taking them in opposite directions, will this time be any different than the past?

HOLDING ON TO A SECOND CHANCE

The action explodes off of the page from the first sentence and carries all the way through till the end. In the midst of chaos, with angry vengeful Taliban constantly hunting them, trying to stay alive is a challenge. Holding onto a second chance at being together is the stuff of long ago dreams come true.
Breaking Away keeps you on the edge of your seat, not willing to put it down until it’s finished. A quick but very enjoyable and satisfying read. Definitely recommend.

Loved this story! Toss me in the middle of some action and keep it heart-pounding all the way through! I enjoyed how with this 2nd chance love story, they learned what was important and decided to make things work and allow the other to keep their current dreams alive, and embrace what the future holds. Fun twists and intense moments deliver a terrific story that I'm glad I took a chance on.

I love the way that Elle’s books grab your attention from the very beginning, she takes you into the story and action never ends. This book is a love story that started years ago and continues today. This book is fast paced and an easy read. You will not want to put this book down until the very end and then wish it would continue.

I recommend this book and all of Elle’s books.

I was given an arc for an honest review.

Sometimes things get in the way of love, but then you get a second chance at that same love. That’s what happens to Mac and Kylie in this newest release in the Delta Force Strong series. Kylie, a war correspondent and Mac, a Delta Force member meet again after many years when they broke up so each could pursue their dreams. The unlikely place where they meet is in Afghanistan during a battle. From there on, things get hot and start blowing up. A great little read.
