DEVIANCE

Rate this book
To be deviant is to rebel against the norms imposed by families, society or the law. But can deviance be mustered and manifested in a pragmatic way? Can it be practised in a way as to come to terms with it and make the most out of life? Deviant, HydRAW's fourth anthology highlights the melancholy yet aspiring lives of the deviant. One assigns radical behaviour to deviance, yet most of the main characters here are not toxic, nor are they destructive. For the few that are, the reader will still relate and connect to their motivations and behaviour. This is the first time that HydRAW is presenting an anthology with a specific theme, deviance. It's an ambitious attempt that was prone to failure. Yet we could successfully put together a splendid collection of 13 short stories from authors of different backgrounds, from across the country. With fine narration and breath-taking plot warps, these stories take you into the world of 'them', the deviants.

Deviance - the title says it all but what it doesnt say probably is that its a great read! I heard about Deviance anthology that was published by HydRAW team. They are known to bring great stories so I had a great expectation when I bought it and I was not at all dissapointed. Its a collection of amazing stories - each on different topics but connected by - unique idea and nice narration. I would recommend this book if you love good stories.

The anthology, Deviance is a good collection of stories depicting deviation which is considered unacceptable or not conforming to what is called Normal. An army man's reminiscences of the Sarpanch's Daughter; Tara, who needed just a nudge at the right time to succeed in her quest creating an Uproar; the Double Entendre of Radha-Shyam or Radhey-Shyama; a very well guarded Secret are all very interesting. The bold views of a teenager exposing Manhattan's Worst; the hilarious plus size of Rasgulla; the hypnosis sessions of I Remember; How to Write a Page Turner are all absorbing.
Aesclepius, exposes the hypocritical Hippocrates oath. While the Vegetable Vendor of Madurai is a simple tale of an innovator set to blaze new trails; Farewell is a very touching story of an autistic child and Amour is a poignant narrative of human relations. The concluding story, Child of the Universe scales new heights and is truly out of this world. A great job by the Curator and Editor Team of Kalam Babu and Lavanya Nukavarapu, adding more feathers in their caps.

Deviance is deviant in every way..stories are very intriguing in this anthology and every story is a page turner... There is a story titled how to write a page turner and hooks the reader till the end. Armour is beautifully written and the metaphor used is very appealing... Manhattan's Worst kinda shocks u, child of the Universe is a sci-fi, in fact Deviance gives the reader the whole gamut of the term Deviance. One has to complete the read as it will be hard for the reader to keep the book down. A must read book while sipping a cup of coffee on that rainy Sunday afternoon.

The best thing about Anthology is you can finish the read one story at a time in short spurts. Deviance gave me a lovely time during my flight. Deviance anthology, a collection of short stories revolving around the theme of being true to oneself is an ambitious feat. Each story is a revelation. The open ended stories leaving reader to make their own interpretations are even better. The intrigue surrounding "Sarpach's daughter", the lovely message in "Rasgulla" or the twisted tale of "Radhey shyama", each one is a page turner. I recommend this all my friends. Get a copy folks, you will thank me later!

What does it take to rebel against the norms? Is the distinction a clear black and white? Or are well all somewhere in grey?
Deviance deals with the characters who clearly fall under a darker shade of grey. Not with a judgmental tone, but rather from an empathetic lens.
Thoroughly enjoyed the ride, each story took me into.
Sarpanch's Daughter was very lucid and caught me off guard, with an unexpected ending.
I liked the light hearted second person narrative of Rasgulla, which is creative and draws us into the story instantly.
Farewell is a heart touching story of a husband, who wishes to hold on to the memories of his wife, in his own unique way.
Overall, a good read.
