九月流火 is the same author who can take the credit for beautiful works such as I Became The Stepmother of My Ex-husband, Greetings Ninth Uncle and even I’ll Be the Male Lead’s Sister-in-Law, so you know that you can't go wrong with this one either. The author definitely has a way with her historical romances and each of her works are proof enough. Hell, I even remember the plot of each of the above mentioned even though it's already been ages since. I'm quite surprised that this is the case since most, if not all, Chinese novels span well over a hundred chapters covering all the dramas which exist. My most memorable has to be her Greetings, ninth uncle [Ninth uncle where are you? Look, your white rabbit will be stolen!] which leads me to point out that in all the novels that I've read of this author, most MTL'd, there's a common theme of the female leads thinking that they chose the right man who only ends up being a scum-bag / coward, and fate plays a hand and puts the real Mr. Right on the way to their lady loves. In that aspect, this one is no different.

But the twist here is that the romance is accompanied with Lu Heng & QingQing solving cases in the ancient era that baffles even the emperor, all the way from corruption to adultery. I'd suggest to avoid reading the summary since it contains spoilers for first couple of chapters, but other that, this novel is definitely a HEA.

(137 chapters + 3 extra chapters)
MTL (complete)
On-going translation.

P.S : Even in the MTL, the author's words make you stop and ponder over it frequently. A wholesome experience.

‘Will she be in her hometown, or some unknown town? Perhaps, at this moment, she is also looking up at the sky, watching the same piece of cosmic dust as him.’

English name: The Imperial Guard’s Revenge
4.5 stars rounded down to 4

I really liked everything about this story except the premise, since it means the ML was lying to the FL for over half the book until she regains her memories. Hence the 4.5 rating instead of 5 stars. But I loved how great they were at cracking all sorts of cases and how the FL really contributed to each one rather than just watching from the side.

The story starts out with the FL, Wang Yanqing, living in her adopted family's house. She was an orphan and was adopted by her father's general, the patriarch of the Fu family, when he realized her terrible living situation without any parents. She's spent the last 10 years in the Fu household and is super close to the Fu family heir, Fu Tingzhou, who is close to her in age. They essentially grew up together and were understood to be childhood sweethearts that would eventually marry, but when the Fu patriarch died, the ML's parents decided to marry him off to a girl from a prestigious family instead, for the support and benefits that family could bring to theirs.

Even though Fu Tingzhou cares deeply for Wang Yanqing, he understands that the future of the Fu family rests on his shoulders, so he reluctantly agrees to the marriage and for the FL to be a concubine. However, Wang Yanqing isn't happy with the situation and is planning to run away from the Fu household. Before she can do that, however, the ML Lu Heng, who's kinda Fu Tingzhou's enemy in a political sense, decides to ambush the Fu family along with the FL when they visit a nearby temple. The FL ends up falling off a cliff and losing her memories when she hits the back of her head in the fall.

When Wang Yanqing wakes up, she doesn't remember much except that she has a beloved older brother. And of course Lu Heng is a man without principles, so he decides to play along as her older brother for his personal amusement. This is how the story really starts. Very quickly, Lu Heng realizes that the FL has an abnormally strong ability to read the micro expressions and unconscious gestures of everyone in the room and can tell when someone is lying to her. This means that not only does he have to be careful about who he has serving the FL, but also that she's an enormous asset to him in his investigations.

Lu Heng starts out the novel as the acting commander of the Imperial Guards, which means that he's under the emperor's direct orders to openly or secretly investigate anything the emperor wishes. There are multiple cases that the emperor wants him to handle delicately for various reasons, whether it's to not disrupt the complex politics of the imperial harem or to keep certain arrogant officials clueless about the investigation. So in those cases, it's hard for the ML to employ his normal kidnap and torture tactics, and he uses the FL's abilities to his advantage to ferret out the truth. Of course, the ML is no slacker either, and he has incredible attention to detail and the smallest thing off can make him suspicious. I was seriously impressed with both of their abilities as well as the author's ability to think of these small and intricate details and include them in the plot.

The whole time I was reading, it felt like the whole situation about the ML kidnapping the FL and lying to her was just hanging over their heads. I kept wondering when the truth would finally come out, and I didn't like that feeling. I wish the it was revealed much earlier, since I felt mildly stressed out by the initial lie and all the other lies built on top of it. It definitely lessened my enjoyment of the story a little bit. When the FL finally regains her memories, I was satisfied to see the FL gaining her independence from the ML and making the ML work hard for her feelings. At the same time, it was nice that the ML recognized what she needed and gave her the space and independence from him to figure out her own feelings.

I felt really bad for Fu Tingzhou. You can tell he genuinely cares for the FL, and it's not his fault that he chooses to prioritize the success of his family over his personal happiness. After Wang Yanqing's disappearance, he pretty much goes crazy with worry and looks for her everywhere. Even after he finds her and realizes she's lost his memory, he tries hard to win her back. Honestly, I wouldn't have been upset if the author had chosen to go with him as the male lead instead. The story could've been a nice wife chasing crematorium, where Fu Tingzhou chases after the FL after realizing everything he did wrong and finally stands up for her to his arrogant family members who dislike her. But it turned out okay with Lu Heng too. He was able to encourage her to find her own interests and personality since she lost her memories and even noticed her health issue, which had been accumulating for years and had never been noticed by Fu Tingzhou. This was a rare story where I was okay with both the male lead and second male lead.

I'll end my review with a quick summary of the various cases they solved:

Here's an excerpt from Fu Tingzhou's POV. Like I said, I do feel sorry for him. Classic case of not realizing what you have until it's gone:

After Wang Yanqing disappeared, he realized that she had become so important in his life. She was everywhere in his clothing, food, housing, sitting, lying, and living. It was also after Wang Yanqing disappeared that Fu Tingzhou discovered how gentle, sensible, and considerate Qing Qing was compared to others.

She was as quiet and tolerant as water, never quarreling or taking credit, never publicizing her existence, but taking care of all aspects for him. He didn't need to say a lot of things and Qing Qing would naturally understand. Fu Tingzhou took the lead in many ideas, and Qing Qing understood it, then she would do it according to Fu Tingzhou's wishes.

Fu Tingzhou and Wang Yanqing had been together for so long that he naturally felt that all women in the world were like this, it was nothing special. He was like a fish living in the water, and he wasted his own resources wantonly. After he became used to it, the water of the pond suddenly dried up. He was thrown naked on the shore, increasingly unable to breathe.

Many things that were ignored by Fu Tingzhou in the past now came to mind one after another. Chen Shi's dissatisfaction, the Madam's connivance, the gossip of the Fu family sisters in private... In the huge Marquis Mansion, except for Old Marquis Fu and him, no one treated Wang Yanqing well. How did she survive all these years?

No, even he didn't treat her well.

ML has such AMAZING attention to detail. I'm so impressed. Even down to whether someone is left or right handed makes him suspicious:

Wang Yanqing instinctively caught the pouch that flew toward her, and as she held it, a look of realization crossed her face. Seeing that she understood, Lu Heng said: "When we first entered the room, she wiped her tears with her left hand. At the time, I didn't think much of it, but later, when I noticed the inkstone was placed on the left side of the paper, I suddenly realized something was off. So, I tested it with a piece of paper, and indeed, she caught it with her left hand."

Wang Yanqing finally understood. She had been puzzled as to why Lu Heng would throw the evidence to the suspect, but now it became clear that his real aim was to determine her dominant hand, not to inquire about her handwriting.

I like how Wang Yanqing really thought it through before she came to the conclusion that she loves the ML:

But eventually, she came to understand that he was neither righteous nor honest, and not even her brother. The qualities she imagined a future husband should possess were nowhere to be found in him. Yet, despite all his faults, it was him who made her heart ache, and him she couldn't let go of.

She loved his intelligence, his strength, his attentiveness, and his sense of responsibility. She admired his composure, his rationality, and his ability to strategize. Perhaps, she would have to accept the intensity, strong will, and ruthlessness that came with those qualities.

He wasn't a good man, but he was the one she loved.

The storyline had multiple themes: revenge, detective, adopted sister/brother romance and palace drama. It did not deliver any of them well.
The lead characters were narrated as smart, young geniuses including a shy female with abilities to see through liars by their body language. But, she never saw through the daily lies from the servants and other people around her after months of being abducted and living with the person who snatched her. She can help the person abducted her to solve crimes and never see the lies. I thoroughly lost interest mid way into this novel.

This was a long read for me - the ML Lu Heng is just too dark. Smart, witty but even even the author writes that he is unambiguously bad.

The FL is an adopted sister raised in a military household. Her bestie, the heir of the house, isn’t sure if she’s his life or his sister but Mr. Spoiled doesn’t really care about her role in life. Adopted Sis gets seriously injured in a carriage accident while Heir is tending to his potential family-appointed bride. FL Wang Yanqing wakes up with no memory and a smiling handsome guy calling her sister. Yep, ML Lu Heng is going to regret that! The man who caused the accident can’t quite believe she’s really got amnesia so he keeps her around, trying to prove her secrets, until he realizes he wants a wife and not a sister.

Lying for two years is no way to start a relationship.

One clever plot point is how the author points out how all the main characters are lying to themselves as well. Pride, education, governing skills, polite society- all of these shaped the characters and the author did an excellent job researching Ming Dynasty life.

Quite nice romance as well although the author paints the ML as quite a heartless flirt.

This has been picked up as a drama filming in 2025.

C17 eeee ML is already so casually affectionate and actually kinda flirty…
But OOF how is he going to resolve this major deception 😱
I love FL and feel so sad and sorry for her

C18 ah damn my wishful thinking. He’s mostly acting/immersive acting. Slightly moved but it’s just a niggling tiny part. FL truly is outstanding though. I’m already super stressed about the reveal & even black hearted ML is slightly guilty.

C48 (lol the book is too good to take the time to write comments!) was kinda 😱 about ML playing with FL’s hair, but - :/ him thinking he actually can’t get married cuz he’s too suspicious to let someone sleep next to him. And him thinking QingQing might murder him when giving him a head massage 😱😬

😿 after c76 I had to rely on https://wtr-lab.com/en/serie-899/the-... which apparently is google or bing - you get to choose your mess 🙄 in the 80s all that random political intrigue imo is boring & unnecessary like I thought I might’ve accidentally started reading another book/it was wrong. Bleh. Still ongoing at c86 😒

Phew c87 frisky ML lol ravishing FL in his study, getting her to agree to marriage & call him husband all just in exchange for him waiting to take that ~last step. Heh. (But omg when she recovers her memory 😩😭 how will he make it up to her ☠️)

C95 😹☠️ Lu Heng ML you dog having your subordinates put away the futon/cot in your FuSi room hoping to make FL sleep-just sleep! With you. 😜 yeah your subordinates are “negligent” pfft lol 0 shame just shoving them under the bus. (Still pretty bored by the political intrigue though I guess at least this book stuff with Marquis Wuding is better than the previous mess.)

C100 OOF failed marriage - and it wasn’t FTZ 😱 who was it then?! And she regained her memories? Both the maid appearing and the knock to her noggin?! 😭 her wanting a clean break… ML ~trapping her in the capital and 😅 telling her no matter where she goes he’ll buy up all the surrounding properties 🫠

C115 ok so even the mix of google/bing translating is TERRIBLE but I’m pretty sure FL forgave ML - much earlier than her 3 month window! (And phew the emperor wasn’t interested in her/knows the sort of Lu Heng is more important). Anyway I am WHEEZELAUGHSCREAMING at how shameless ML is. “Hey now that we’re reconciled remember your trash ass ex is getting married tomorrow? How can we let him consummate before us?!” 😹☠️

Awww c116; the end - a month later they go home & he’s spotlessly (well made the staff) keep all the wedding stuff intact ❤️ - AND HE WANTS TO COMPLETE THE WEDDING RITUALS 😻

Sad panda - no extras
So the author’s notes said she wanted a different style & yeah this really turned more historical fiction - but my interest all the boring court intrigue & battles & military shit & impeachments. She said it took over half a year to research etc, which at least was impressive. And it was optioned before it was fully published which I kinda noticed/felt maybe stuff was written to be “more dramatic” though <.< I find politics boring personally/that’s not what I want to read.

Ah well. Not mad I read this but the machine translating truly was kinda miserable. The real translation also looks like it was abandoned.

I’d say… C+? I did really like FL & ML ❤️

I love the premise of the story. The first case our FL was roped into helping was so eye rolling in terms of what she discovered and the mundane case itself seems too inconsequential for someone of Lu Heng's calibre to investigate. Thankfully the cases get more and more interesting later on and the way she helps out gets better.

On the romance side it's good, and surprisingly a lot of court politics, not boudoir politics, are integrated into the story.
