I've been attempting to explore more children's graphic novels and I completely forgot that some publisher's are now creating beginner readers that are actually graphic novels for kids that are just beginning to read!
The Doggie Defendant is one of the new "Ready-to-Read Graphics" that are leveled or beginner readers that are specifically created for younger children who are just beginning to read independently. I have been so excited to learn that these are now in graphic novel style for kids who enjoy them. This specific title follows Kim and her friends as they attend a birthday party for Neil. When his birthday party is ruined, Neil immediately blames Mile's dog Digger. It's then up to Kim to prove whether Digger is or isn't responsible for the mess.
This was so cute! I love that kids are now getting graphic novels that are accessible for them as newer readers. For years people have questioned the value of graphic novels especially in children's literature. The tides are slowly changing and we're beginning to see the appreciation for this beautiful art form. The story was easy to follow and contained fun and vibrant art. I loved that there was an instruction guide in the beginning of the book that told kids how to read the panels which can be difficult for a younger reader. Overall, this was a solid read and I can't wait to pick up the other one in this series!

I borrowed this from the library to see if I would like it for my niece. She's moving into level readers and this has a great format that I think will excite her to read. It's vibrant and it being a graphic novel make it feel easier to digest as opposed to a chapter book with more pages of words. There's a mystery to solve and it introduces new vocab.
