Shockingly, I think this series is one of the first where I more than just tolerate the FMC. I actually liked her character, which surprised the heck out of me, considering I usually dislike them. Immensely. That is a big plus for me, probably the biggest plus for this series. Don't get me wrong, she isn't perfect by any means. But I would hate a perfect character anyway.
So the first book started out just a teensy bit confusing for me, but that could also have been because I was really tired. After the second chapter it all evened out, so not a huge deal. Errors weren’t abundant, but there were some noticeable mistakes that got me confused once or twice. For example, an already established Demivamp was mentioned as a demifae once. A few typos here and there, but compared to other series like this one, they were manageable. Ellis had so many hair colours - while not completely conflicting, it was annoying to have it pale gold, blonde, white, pale yellow, whatever other kind of descriptive colour. Just pick one, or two if you have to. I don't need to know what colour his man bun is every single damn time it's mentioned (and it's mentioned a lot).
There were two weird nuances throughout the series that I honestly could have done without. The first, the author had multiple povs, which I love, but with one twist. The FMC was first person, present tense, and the rest were third person, past tense. I finally got the hang of it, but I’m not sure I’ve ever read povs like this before. It was a little jarring, but not enough to DNF. The second weird part was referring to the males, particularly from the FMC’s pov, as… males. “I shove my magic into him a second time, but this time, the male ducks under the barely visible power ” It isn’t a major deal breaker, and it’s probably just me that found this bit a little odd.
That being said, I rather liked these males. Some of their personalities were a little similar but I didn’t mind that too much. I’m not a huuuuge fan of insta-love, and there was a tiny bit of that, but not enough to kill it for me. There were a lot of sex scenes, and I usually end up skimming those because… well… they all kind of start to read the same after a while. It’s inevitable when you have lots of sexy times in a series, though.
One more annoyance…. The mention of Sam’s roommate Mika gets less and less, and while that’s fine, she eventually just drops out of the series. If they really were friends, I’d think there would be some mention of her at the very least in the ‘two months later’ follow up. Is that a spoiler? I’m not sure. More of an omission if you ask me.
Also, why is there a roommate named Mika, when there was a maid named Mika in the Power of Five series by the same author? It just kind of struck me as odd, but maybe it's a shout out to someone. Or something.
All that long windedness said, it was a good series and anyone who likes paranormal RH academy books will most likely enjoy it.
