Love's Misfiring Magic

Rate this book
The road to true love is never a smooth one…

Shelly Newsome believes that her ex-boyfriend made a mistake breaking up with her. As a witch, she could just nudge him back in the right direction. All she needs is to cast the proper spells.

Which she isn’t very good at. Thank goodness Shelly’s best friend is one of the most skilled spellcasters in Wildcrest.

After so long in the friend zone, maybe there’s a way out…

Dr. Benjamin Wright has loved Shelly since high school. When her boyfriend dumps her, Ben is finally ready to expose his heart. Until she asks for his help crafting the perfect spells to win that ex back.

After Ben agrees, he makes an impulsive decision to tweak the first spell to misfire. He hopes this will buy him time to show Shelly they belong together; however, some spells are not meant to be messed with.

Will Ben’s impetuous decision provide an unexpected way out of the friend zone, or lead Shelly to reject him forever?

Read the story of their bumpy road to happily ever after in the first book in the sweet small town romance series, Wildcrest Witches.

Crystal recommends Love's Misfiring Magic by Heather Silvio

What I Expected...
I expected a sweet and charming read set in a small magical town. I knew going in that this was a friends to lovers at its most basic; this tempered my expectations because I am not a big fan of the trope.

What I Loved...
The magical town of Wildcrest outside of Las Vegas was a fun setting. I could totally see a town like that holding appeal to tourists, because who doesn't want to believe that witches are real. I liked the scene at the apothecary that highlighted the fun for tourists who visit.

I loved the magic aspect and enjoyed the scenes where spells were being discussed and created. I enjoyed how intentions could play into the spells. I could see how Shelly and Ben working together on the spells could give her an opportunity to see him in a different light.

I really enjoyed both sets of parents. It was obvious that they all knew Ben and Shelly belonged together, but were determined to let them figure it out. I do think maybe Shelly's mom should have nudged her away from her path with Ethan way earlier though as she was so determined to make it work that she was going to marry someone she clearly had only friendly feelings for from the beginning.

Final Thoughts
This read was the light-hearted and flirty friends to lovers read I expected. Ben and Shelly are cute, if not a little extra-special. You will feel a little bad for Ethan, but in the end, he will move on and probably have zero issues finding himself another partner - I truly got the feeling throughout the whole story that he and Shelly were just friends who happened to be stuck in a relationship and unsure how to disentangle themselves.

This read is, is in my opinion, not meant to be serious. It is a little cartoonish and was a fun way to pass a little time.

I really wanted to like this book. I thought the concept was a really cool idea, but just wasn't really executed that well.

I wanted more backstory as to why Shelly's magic backfires, is there no way to fix this? I thought at times Shelly was really immature, she's supposed to be a college graduate so I'm thinking at least 22-24 years old?

Ben being a Dr but always having time to answer the phone was an odd one. Drs don't usually have a lot of time on their hands, especially ones going for promotions.

I felt this was a super fast-paced book and with that, the plot and scenes were quite jumpy.

Shelly and Ben's Tampering . . .

Shelly Newsome has problems making her spells work right. So when her ex-boyfriend Ethan breaks up with her, she figures he was simply mistaken and a well-done spell could make him come back to her where he belongs. But as mentioned, she is not very good with spells. So she goes to her best friend, Ben, for help.

Ben Wright is a very talented spell-caster. But he has also been in love with Shelly and waiting for his chance to tell her. But she keeps him in the friend zone. Ready to make his move, Ben is disappointed when she asks him for a spell to bring Ethan back to her. He probably should have told her how he feels right then. But he decides to make his spell “misfire” to give him a chance to convince Shelly she would have a better life with him. Will his misfire work as expected? Will she give him a chance to show her his love? Or would she get angry if she realizes Ben made them intentionally misfire?

I wasn’t happy that Shelly thought she had the right to tamper with Ethan’s feelings because she “knew better” than he did how he should feel. I was also disappointed that Ben went along with her idiotic scheme instead of refusing to do the spell and more importantly telling her how he feels about her and asking how he can get past her “friend zone”. Too much manipulation for a satisfying love story.

"Love's Misfiring Magic" is book one in the "Wildcrest Witches Romance" series by Heather Silvio. Shelly is all upset that her boyfriend broke up with her, and she starts to try different spells on him to get him back. With the help of her friend, Ben, Shelly thinks he is helping when, in reality, he is hoping it doesn't work out. Ben has loved Shelly for years but never wanted to ruin the friendship between them. My favorite scene was when Shelly went to her parents and had a talk with them. She figured all kinds of things out with talking. I will definitely read more from this series. I have been enjoying different books by this author.

The friend zone is always the friend zone, even when you’re powerful witches.

Love's Misfiring Magic by Heather Silvio is the first in the Wildcrest Witches Romance Series and was a hard core friend zone to lovers story. Shelly, a witch with immature powers tried to spell her ex-boyfriend right after he broke up with her so he wouldn’t leave her. Which lands both of them in the hospital and the doctor who treated them was her best friend, Ben who secretly loves her. After getting her ex in a better state and taking him home, he still wants to leave. So Shelly devizes a plan to make him see how much he cares for her with the help of Ben who reluctantly agrees. Unbeknownst to Shelly, Ben has a bit of a trick up his sleeve. How long will it take for her to realize how much he cares and how long will it take for him to speak up?

I felt so bad for Ben and I really questioned whether Shelly was just that oblivious or if she was pretending to not notice his infatuation in her to maintain their friendship. Shelly was really driving me crazy. Haha. The fact that she tried to use magic on her ex-boyfriend in the first place was a problem from the start. Wanting someone to love you is not that deep and as we all know very well from Tom Riddle Jr’s parents, it will not end well!

I liked that their world was within our world but in a secluded place that was fully open to the magic that everyone possessed. Plus the visitors coming in to take tours and experience the magic. On top of that, I liked that there was so much mention of herbs, stones, crystals, and other witchy and healing arts items.

It was interesting to have a take on Shelly’s powers not fully being matured as it described her personality as well. Interestingly, Ben also had a similar situation as he reluctantly helped her and became a bit childish, which related to the fact that he never confessed to her. Nice metaphors there. Although she was a bit immature, I liked how much of a go getter she was and that she was pretty focused on what she wanted.

Finally, the story flowed very well and at a fast pace. Even though it was a shorter story, it still held a decent plot and got through the whole story. Of course there were areas that could’ve been more developed and still could if this ever becomes a fuller novel. But it is great as is.

Anyone who loves a good witchy story mixed with a friends to lovers trope would enjoy this!

Can’t wait to dive into the next book.

Shelly Newsome's boyfriend just broke up with her and she wants to get him back. But, as a witch, her spells tend to backfire. So, she asks her best friend, Ben Wright, for help. Ben's been in love with Shelly since high school, so he tweaks his spells to misfire hoping to buy himself some time to tell her. Will his plan work, or will he lose Shelly forever?

I received an ARC of this book from Book Sirens and this is my honest, unbiased review. This is the first book in a new series and I absolutely enjoyed it. The book's well-written and it has some wonderful characters. It was a quick, fun read that drew me in and kept me hooked. The romance was sweet and the paranormal aspect was great. You just have to love a town full of witches! I am eager to learn more about the town and the other characters so I hope we see more of those. I'm looking forward to the next book and highly recommend this one.

Our heroine is looking for a spell to get her ex back, while our hero wants to take his place. Maybe if he just tweaked the spell a bit, what could go wrong?

This is book one of the series, so all good there.

This is a sweet romance with a bit of magic to it. The story is well written and easy to read, which I would certainly expect from our author. The setting is nice and simple (relatively speaking) with a quaint small town. The characters are the star of our show and they are also nicely done. I love the entire vibe of this story and enjoyed watching the relationship between our characters evolve. Was it the magic or was it just time? Perhaps you should read the book to find out.

Highly recommended.

I very kindly got an ARC of this book for free, and my opinion is my own, voluntary and hopefully painless!

Since first picking up the second installment of this trilogy I've been intrigued by the witches at Wildcrest and interested in the three brothers - Noah, Ben and Aaron - and their love stories.

Turns out that Ben and Shelly would make for a class A Hallmark movie rating between 5 and 6 on IMDB.

I unfortunately wasn't as much a fan of this one because Shelly comes across very silly.

If a man asks you to stop, you stop the magic. Trust me.

Overall however, the writing is tight, the story easy to follow and the characters entertaining, so I do encourage readers to pick up the sequels. It's witchy romance and it IS highly amusing if nothing else!

I had a lot of fun with this story. It’s a quick read that’s nothing earth-shattering, but it’s really sweet and delightful. My heart broke a little bit for Ben at the way Shelly refused to see him as anything more than her “friend”. And it was pretty easy for me to sympathise with Shelly trying so hard to get everything right, but it still going all wrong anyways. That’s a point I would have liked to see the book dig into a little deeper, but maybe we’ll get to come back to it later in the series. And, I’m already looking forward to seeing where this is going to go next.

This book was definitely cute. It had an effervescent quality, and there was plenty of humor, hijinks, and love. The witch aspect was well done—it had a very light, goofy feel to it rather than feeling dark or ominous. There were some scenes that were a touch too silly for my taste, but the book fulfilled its promise of a sweet romance.

However, the book dragged quite a bit. There were a lot of slow parts, and it took Shelly an unreasonable amount of time to come to her senses. I liked Ben, but I was disappointed with how afraid he was to discuss his feelings. He seemed to want Shelly, but was also fine if they didn't end up together. I prefer a hero who fights more for his woman. The ending of the story was also somewhat lackluster, though moderately satisfying.

Overall, this was a very sweet, cute romance, but it lacked a well-paced plot. I'd recommend it to younger readers or those who enjoy a lot of silliness in their books.

For my first book from Heather, I would say it was good but short, but still fun to read. Heather did lose 1/2 of a star because the book felt like it was too short for me and lost the other half of the star because I wanted more.

While Ben concealed his feelings for Shelly, he attempted to assist her in winning back her ex-boyfriend. Yet, he was simultaneously undermining his own efforts by casting spells to repel Ethan from Shelly. When Shelly discovered the truth, she fled, embodying the deepest sense of hurt. Yet, she reflected on the events and their reasons. Conversations with her parents also enlightened her. She pondered her coven's belief that "there is only one true love," and recognizing that Ethan was not the one, was a significant and swift decision for her.

A little too quick for me. The story should be longer, but I still enjoyed it. I would do another Heather book.

This book is about Shelly, a witch with magic that doesn’t work quite right and her best friend Ben, a magical doctor. Shelly’s boyfriend, Ethan, broke up with her and in her attempt to fix things between them, she managed to send him to the hospital.

To avoid further hospitalisation, Shelly asks Ben for help, not knowing Ben is secretly in love with her……

It’s a cute short magical story, with the friends to lovers trope and the miscommunication trope. As I hate the last trope, this was not the book for me, but as it was still very well written and overall cute, I still gave it three stars.

People that like these tropes, highly recommend!

Ben and Shelly are a great example of friends who don't really share what is most important - honesty. They were cute as friends with Ben wanting more and Shelly just wanting her five year relationship with Ethan to continue. It's amazing that it took five years to realize the relationship wasn't working and only when her plans misfired in more ways than one did she realize it was time to move on to what was there all alone.

A quick easy read that has witches, spells and misguided love. I liked Ben and Shelley, their interaction as best friends, and their slow realisation of what really lies between them. I liked the fact that the town they live in is a home for more witches, who have all been able to show themselves and live alongside unmagical people. A nice romance but I would have liked a bit more magic. With 3 brothers, here’s hoping there’ll be more along with their stories too.

This was really cute. It was a fun short read. I love friends to lovers and witchy vibes so I was excited to check it out. Ben and Shelley immediately have great chemistry.

While I enjoyed the story, I wish we had more background on their friendship and more tension between the two. Since it’s so short, it felt a bit rushed. I feel like there was a lot more to be explored but the story was surface level.

If you’re looking for a cute, fun, witchy romance, check this out!!

All I could see when I was reading was this:

I hated this woman, she's selfish and cares naught for poor Ethan's feelings or pain. She was the crazy ex-girlfriend MCs in better books avoid at all costs. It wasn't nice to read about her.
Ben wasn't much better, tough, so I guess they deserve each other. He was a lying idiot, and no wonder why the board at the hospital was hesitating about making him chief resident, when he drops everything to help this b*tch whenever she wants.

It's a quick simple read with the typical friends to lovers plot. I found both mc rather boring and flat. I don't understand how she went from friends to falling in love with him when there was so much nothing happening. The entire side plot involving Ben adds nothing to the main plot. Just wish there was more about their magic and characters were better developed. I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

Ben and Shelly were best friends in High School and reconnected when she returned to the area.

She is a graphics designer and he is a doctor at the local hospital. Their hometown might be an unofficial haven for paranormals, but these witches are fun chaos combined

can they make it out of Friend Zone and mess with the ex?

amusing relationships adventures.

I’m sorry, I just couldn’t get into the story, the concept wasn’t for me. I knew going in that the MMC was going to sabotage the spell with her ex, but I hoped that he would come clean a lot sooner than he did, because the lying was not my cup of tea. But also, just the concept of pining for someone for 10 years and them never noticing, is not very appealing to me. Makes me feel like their relationship is not destined to be endgame if she never noticed she was attracted to him all that time.

This was a cute quick read. This was a great read in between my long series reads because the characters find themselves together in a sweet quick way, with no huge conflicts. The characters are relatable and quirky made me chuckle a few times.

Shelly is a witch with poor spell casting skills. Her best friend Beni’s an excellent spell caster and she begs him to help her influence her boyfriend to give their relationship another chance. Will several magical mishaps make Shelly realize Ben is the perfect man for her? Very enjoyable read!. I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.

This has some very comical moments with entertaining magical mishaps. My heart went out to Ben for his long lasting unrequited love for his best friend. Shelly seems a little scatterbrained. I would have liked their story even more if it had been a little more romantic. 3 1/2* I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

Light and cute

This is very light, very little angst and cute romance between two friends. It’s not exactly childhood friends to lovers but close which is done well even if we don’t go too deep with emotions. The witchy aspect is also light which does fit the mood of the book.

misfiring magic

Nice read. A few grammar blips but overall a sweet magic romance. Shelly's boyfriend breaks up with her and best friend Ben says he will help since Shelly's magic is wonky at best. But what happened to Ben's magic????

Quirky magic with a happy ending

This was a cute and funny story. I would of liked to have read about how Ben & Shelly apologized to Ethan and what his reaction was when he found out she was a witch, but that’s okay.

Cute and fun little read. The town of Wildcrest is located outside of Vegas and would definitely be appealing to tourists who hope magic truly is real. Ben and Shelly are sweet and I am glad they finally figured out their feelings for one another before making life-altering decisions.
