Now, I’m a big fan of Keren’s work. “Paper Hearts”, “Out of the Ashes”, & “Secret Santa” are fantastic books! I even got a sneaky peek at one of her next stories, an enemies to lovers and it was FANTASTIC! I even want to re-read it when it gets released, get a paperback copy! But TTRS didn’t tick all the boxes for me this time, which is a major bummer.

Having said that, I’m still giving 4 stars, because I do like the overall sto **I received an ARC for this book in exchange for an honest review**

But TTRS didn’t tick all the boxes for me this time, which is a major bummer.

Having said that, I’m still giving 4 stars, because I do like the overall story, the theme, the elements, & Keren’s ability to do present tense always amazes me. She really is a talented writer, I just feel for *me* this is a bit of a miss.

What I wasn’t hot on was that the majority of the book was more of telling vs showing (which I feel is odd for Keren! She’s usually the opposite). I felt like a lot of the background info was just narration & doesn’t have an active voice—like, yes, a lot of it was speaking of the past, which already happened, but I mean, instead of being told to the reader, it would have been better in a different context, ie. Another character or the flashbacks. I feel that the past experiences would have been better explained (specifically on Cul’s end) if he was more of venting it to someone or thinking about it, having it play out in his mind. It just felt like a bit of an info-dump for me & it was like, whoa, okay! Kinda whiplashy & overwhelming.

At 20% into the book, I still felt like everything was being set up & not much action was taking place. I felt a little disconnected, and didn’t feel as immersed in the story and wanting to know what was next…I was more of like, “Okay, when do we really get to the good stuff??!” I kinda expect the angst & drama, as well as romance & heat from Keren, but it kind of fell a bit flat for me :(

I just feel that parts weren’t flowing as nicely as I expected. I also feel like some scenes could probably be cut or reworked. That’s from another author’s POV—as a reader, the blurb for the story is definitely enticing & the cover is super hot. So, you definitely *want* to read it. And in all honesty, the first chapter is a good set up—I was like, yaaaaas! Keren hit another home run! You go Glen Coco! But *spoiler* she kinda skipped the sexy times, which I felt a good detailed love scene was warranted, and then did the tell vs show, which was a shame. Keren is excellent at writing erotic content, both M/F & M/M. I feel like it was a missed opportunity.

I did love the characters. Cul is definitely lucky that he has support for his sexuality, as well as his confidence in it. Houston, I could see the turmoil, as well as the depression from stifling who he really is and his past in general.

So, yes, 4 stars because I do feel that not only is it still good, but there are those who will enjoy the story. Just in being a fan girl over Keren’s work, it was a tad bit of let down for me.

Either way, snag a copy & see for yourself! Haha.

Author Keren Hughes is an author that I read, no matter what. She delivers characters and storylines that are relatable as was well as raw and real. However, her MM stories hold a special place in my book loving heart.

I'm sure this book will resonate with many readers. Houston sacrifices his own happiness to please others and also out of fear. I'm sure many people can relate to that, I can. Reading this story will pull at your heartstrings so make sure to have a tissue or 10 at the ready. Keren Hughes takes you on a journey with Houston and Culhwch through all their ups and downs, their good times and bad and the outcome is spectacular. When Keren tells me she is writing a MM book I really can’t wait to read it and she never disappoints with her storylines.
Culhwch is such a likeable character he is gay and totally honest with everyone about it. So when he meets a guy that can’t be so honest you feel how disappointed he is with t situation.
Houston is a huge rock star you feels coming out might destroy all he has worked to achieve. He is so torn with what to do.
