I adore this series and I adore Gavin and Chloe. But it didn't quite fit the bill this time.

Gavin & Chloe get together in The Devil & The Dancer

and here we get to see how they live as a couple five years later. Due to a personal tragedy both Chloe and Gavin start to think about the future. Will she change or will Gavin watch Chloe grow old. This question wasn't really answered. Which I find quite annoying.

I'm assuming that this book is a stepping stone to Paladin's Kiss as when I read a snippet Gavin was included. Otherwise I got to say this book doesn't make sense.

This book cannot be read as a standalone.

It was great getting back with the gang. Ben & Tenzin and Gio & B.

Gavin and Chloe have had a great relationship for the past five years. She loves being a dancer and Gavin loves her. His priorities are keeping her not only happy, but safe. She's human. Anything could happen to take her from him.
An unexpected tragedy causes Chloe to fly home to LA. Gio and Beatrice help with added security while Chloe is in town. Is it enough?
Many of our favorite vampires make an appearance in this book. It has just the right amount of suspense, romance, and humor. All the things we love about Ms. Hunter's novels. There are even a few severed heads thrown in for good measure.
Another fantastic story from Elizabeth Hunter.

To say I was excited to receive an ARC copy of The Dancer and The Dark would be a massive understatement. I’ve loved Gavin and Chloe, and their growing relationship, ever since they met in Midnight Labyrinth; like many readers, I have always hoped to hear a little more about what’s happening in their lives when they aren’t stepping in to save some of the more trouble-oriented characters from extra chaos. (And, let’s be honest – if I could be any character in the Elemental series, it would definitely be Chloe.)

In short, this book was fabulous. Absolutely fabulous. Five years into their relationship, Gavin and Chloe have found a careful balance between Gavin’s shadowy world of vampire secrets and schemes, and Chloe’s vibrant – but very human – dance career. They’ve made it work until now…but time is on no one’s side, and difficult choices are on the horizon. Even more worryingly, things are shifting in the vampire world, and neither Chloe’s relative anonymity nor her vampire connections may be enough to keep her safe. When a personal tragedy brings both Gavin and Chloe back to LA, circumstances force them to reevaluate what their future together looks like…for better or for worse.

There are so many things to love in this novella. Beyond being an evolution in Chloe and Gavin’s story, The Dancer and The Dark seems to be laying the ground work for some bigger plot threads that I hope will extend into upcoming series (especially Brigid and Carwyn’s next book, Paladin’s Kiss). While the story touches on some painful topics, they’re handled with Elizabeth Hunter’s usual blend of humor and thoughtful poignancy. There are some excellent (and occasionally alarming) plot twists, exciting new characters (hello, HMC!), an abundance of returning favorite faces, and more than one highly relatable scene (poor Gavin and the frustrations of voicemail!). My only regret is that I finished it; it was just that good! I can’t wait for more Gavin and Chloe in the future.

10/10, absolutely recommend.

Theoretically this can be read as a standalone, but for maximum enjoyment, I would recommend reading Midnight Labyrinth and/or The Devil and the Dancer first!

Well, there will be some SPOILERS OF EARLIER BOOKS in this review, so be forewarned. The Elemental Universe has expanded quite considerably and I couldn’t be happier. I’m normally not a romance girl, too slushy for my tastes, but I don’t mind some paranormal romance or romantic suspense, as long as it’s not the full naked man on the cover type thing with names like ‘Dominate Her’ or ‘She’s His Slave’ etc etc. So, basically I like Karen Rose and a couple of others for romantic suspense, as at least there are serial killers, and I like Elizabeth Hunter, and probably a couple of others that I’m currently blanking on, for paranormal suspense. I started the first book, A Hidden Fire, in the first series Elemental Mysteries, back in January this year just scrolling through my Kindle, looking for a book to read out of the literal thousands of eBooks that I have yet to read. I was a little hesitant to pick it, because of my aforementioned lack of a romantic bone in my body (behave), but I was so glad that I did! I devoured every book and novella in the universe within 10 days, and was then left gutted that there weren’t more. Luckily for me, Elizabeth Hunter couldn’t resist writing about a couple named Chloe Reardon, the dancer in the title, and Gavin Wallace, the dark. Chloe is human and Gavin is a wind vampire, which means he can manipulate wind and can also use it to fly. I can’t really explain all the previous stories and adventures, well I could but nobody would stick around to read it when they can just read the actual books - and I do urge you to read them, they’re really fun - but Chloe and Gavin are entwined with other characters and relationships in many ways. Chloe is introduced as the ex-girlfriend of Ben Vecchio, who is one of the main characters, along with my favourite character Tenzin, who is also a wind vampire (oh and, she’s awesome), in the Elemental Legacy series. Ben is the adopted son of the couple from the Elemental Mysteries, Beatrice and Giovanni Vecchio, and Tenzin is a…let’s say eccentric, ancient (and I do mean ancient) wind vampire who was Giovanni’s business partner back in the day (we’re talking centuries ago when I say that), and is now Ben’s partner in a treasure hunting business. She becomes Ben and Tenzin’s assistant (mostly Tenzin’s, who is a tad spaced out at times so needs someone to keep her up to date) who helps them during the daytime when they, as vampires, are mostly unable to function fully in daylight. Through them she meets Gavin, a Scottish vampire who runs bars and clubs that provide neutral ground for vampires, and maintains an impartial reputation, despite being known to help out ‘the good guys’ at times.

In this novella we follow as Gavin endeavours to make a deal with his mentor, Marie-Hélène in New Orleans, when Chloe receives a call from her estranged mother with the news that her father has died of a heart attack. She heads home to Los Angeles, with Gavin rushing to her side, in order to lay the father she felt she never knew to rest. When Gavin let’s slip a suggestion for their future, Chloe must begin to contemplate the questions about her future that she has been avoiding for the past 5 years. Throw in a misunderstanding between rivals and Chloe ends up in peril, with Gavin and their friends rushing to her aid. Ms Hunter certainly manages to get a lot of story in her novellas!

This is a fun little read, and I’ll always be happy for more books in this universe and glimpses of characters who we’ve already fallen in love with. I do wish that Chloe and Gavin could have a full novel of their own, especially considering the decisions that Chloe has yet to make, but if we get enough novellas that will be close enough I suppose! I’d highly recommend picking up the first series, Elemental Mysteries and diving into Elizabeth Hunter’s worlds. She manages to write romance in such a way that it doesn’t feel too voyeuristic, and you can tell that she truly loves her creations. I also love her writing style, it’s descriptive without being overly flowery, and she manages to convey atmosphere particularly well. I’ve also really enjoyed the way that she has written about places, different countries and cultures, it always seems almost reverent, as if she’s fallen in love with them herself. I’d even go so far as to say that they become extra characters in some books. Her characterisation is wonderful, she somehow manages to craft characters who are human despite their alienness. Her human characters aren’t whiny and annoying like so many are now, apparently the ‘waif’ character is appealing to a lot of people. Not me, I prefer strong people who won’t just put aside their own wants and needs the minute they meet a love interest, so thank you for that Ms Hunter! Of course there’s the thorny issue that I’ve written about before, that of the age difference between the vampire and the human, a difference of centuries, and the power differential that presents. At least in this universe, the writer has attempted to address that as best as she can, by having all the human love interests, male and female (which I also love thanks to Ben and Tenzin, and would ask for more male humans please Ms Hunter!) are in their 20’s when the story starts. In the first series, Elemental Mysteries, Giovanni does his best to ensure that Beatrice has the time and space to grow and change as a human woman, to have a family if she chooses to, he doesn’t want her to rush into anything, especially not immortality. Yes, there are still centuries between them, and a lot of life experience on Giovanni’s part, but he allows her the space to become the woman she will be, despite her pleas.

Anyway, back to the book I’m actually reviewing - my brain sometimes wanders off, I apologise! I’d certainly recommend this novella to any fans of Elizabeth Hunter and the Elemental Universe, and I’d strongly advise people that are new to her work to start at the beginning with Elemental Mysteries. You have a wild ride ahead of you!

Nobody knows how to pack an entire novel, without skimping on the details, and still fleshing out an entire story, into one little novella like Elizabeth Hunter. Nobody. I am always so shocked at the amount of events and surprises that happen, and the range of emotions she can make me feel into just a few pages!

Guys, it’s Gavin and Chloe! They are back! And I had no idea what they’d be up to but what a delicious morsel this story was! The gang is all here! This story bridges The Devil and the Dancer and the future for this delightful and sweet couple. Gavin and Chloe are the heart of the elemental mysteries universe. They are surrounded by wild, adventure seeking(and sometimes blood thirsty) immortal friends, yet they remain peaceful and loving. Well, Gavin can get fierce when he has to especially when it comes to his Dove, but we all like that don’t we? 😏 Every time I see this couple on the page my heart feels happy. With others in the elemental world I’m excited and my heart is pumping because of the adventure of it all, but with these two, the pace is usually slower, softer. It woos you. This tale balances flawlessly on that edge of the blade between the light and dark that only Gavin and Chloe could bring to the page. You’re all going to love it!

Love Gavin and Chloe!!!

I absolutely love Gavin and Chloe!!! They are two of my very favorites, so it was awesome getting to read this novella!!
There were parts that were just heartbreaking but then then they were parts that just make you sigh and smile to yourself. They are so perfect together! The more we learn about them the more I love them!!
This story has all the romance we want with excitement and danger added in.
I highly recommend this and everything else by Elizabeth Hunter!!

I love a good novella, and Elizabeth Hunter didn't disappoint with The Dancer and the Dark. Chloe and Gavin are two characters that you don't realize you miss until you read their story again.

I love the chemistry between these two, but at the same time, I love how they are both fiercely independent characters. They need each other, yet they don't. They both have their own lives and careers, but when they are together...watch out.

This was a story I so was happy to get from Elizabeth Hunter. Her secret project was a welcome distraction from the end-of-the-school-year madness that I experience at the end of every May. Thank you for another great novella!

oh YESS, I was giddy when i saw an advanced copy of this land in my kindle!
It was like having all my favorite friends over for a night of delicious story-telling!

Our happy couple, Chloe and Gavin are back, and you can expect the body melting words for Chloe, while she continues her dance between the human and vampire worlds. When tragedy strikes, we see a family come together to bond, support and survive.
This novella was the perfect appetizer for the next adventure in Elizabeth Hunters Elemental World.

BONUS - we get some Gio, B, Sadia, and TENZIN! I mean seriously - does it get any better?

The Dancer & The Dark is the latest book in Ms. Hunter's Elemental Legacy series. This book could be read as a stand alone, but is part of the larger Elemental series.

Ms. Hunter once again takes us into her elemental vampire world with Chloe, a beautiful ballet dancer, and Gavin, a powerful but peaceful wind vampire. They're still figuring out the ins and outs of their relationship, and that continues in this book. No spoilers here, just good old romance and a bit of mystery with Ms. Hunter's usual flare.

This was a short and easy read, perfect for the beach or other light summer reading. I recommend reading the entire Elemental series, but The Dancer & The Dark is a great starting point if you're new to Elizabeth Hunter's work. 5 solid stars!

A secret project she announces!!
This book was it. Elizabeth you always write the most amazing and heartfelt stories.
This book sees the continuing story of Gavin andChloe. They are such a wonderful couple. We get to really delve into those insecurities that develop within a vampire/ human relationship. I’m so captivated by how much thought and detail go into every one of these books.
If you haven’t started reading this series you really are missing out. Get off Goodreads and go get them.

Gavin and Chloe

Great novella. Love these characters and their story. Hope Chloe will finally decide to commit totally to Gavin and turn vampire.
When her father died and she returned to her family home she came to realize that the family she had chosen was more important than her birth family who’d never seemed to appreciate her talents but instead couldn’t get over her decision to dance instead of going to college to become a doctor or lawyer.

Peace lovers until ...

Gavin is indeed a peace lover. He even stood silently by when Beatrice was taken right out of Giovanni's house.
However, when Cloe was taken, entirely different story.

This novella is set within the Elemental Legacy world, and is the second book for Gavin and Chloe, continuing their story as a committed couple.

I wouldn’t recommend reading this book as a standalone, and please note that is does contain some spoilers for storylines in earlier books in this spin-off series.

It’s been five years since Gavin and Chloe fell in love in The Devil and the Dancer. They are together, they are happy, and they are navigating their human/vampire relationship well. But Gavin hasn’t fully let Chloe into his world, and he’s also fearful of what their future holds.

He loved her. He hadn’t loved a being more than her in over 150 years. To him, she was eternity.
And Gavin had no idea what he’d do if she didn’t choose him.

A death in the family sends Chloe travelling across the country (with Ben, Tenzin and friends to accompany her), and forces her to confront her future. And with dedicated, protective and swoony Gavin by her side, it’s time for him to open up to her more, and for them to discuss what comes next for them.

“I spent nearly two hundred years alone, and then I found you.” He shook his head. “You charming, funny, magnetic, brilliant woman, of course I want you forever.”

This is a really sweet read. It’s romantic and sexy, and there’s a little bit of excitement when bad guys from Gavin’s business life threaten the only thing he truly cares about. I loved seeing Gio and Beatrice, Ben and Tenzin again and just loved being back in this world.

Gavin and Chloe’s story feels finished-but-not-finished, but they will appear in future books in this world, and I’m sure we’ll get to see what the future has in store for them.

3.5 stars.

To go back to the Elemental World is a treat on itself. Having another chapter on Gavin's and Chloe's story is the pre birthday gift I did not know I needed.
This time around we are introduced to New Orleans and the vampire hierarchy in the hands of Gavin's mentor, Marie Helene (I can't wait to read more of her in Paladin's Kiss). Add a death in Chloe's family (which broke my heart for Chloe) and Gavin's wedding proposal to Chloe and how both of them navigate to get their relationship to the next level and you have a short, yet well written story of love, decisions to be made and facing the not so great parts of the people that mean the word to you.
I am glad Gavin's and Chloe's story will continue on Paladin's Kiss, the third installment of the Elemental Covenant series.
