Despite being called the "Backpacker Magazine's Guide", there is very little information about backpacking or even hiking in this book. Instead it talks about the history and science of the trial itself. It talks about how the land was formed and how the trail was made. It talks about the routes the trail has followed over the years and how and why sections have been moved. It goes into detail about the geology, forestry, elevation, and such.
