Black Veil #2

Emperor of Dragons

Rate this book
Peace has descended on Black Veil once more, and hope is on the horizon.
Until a new threat arises…

Emil is the head of security, first line of defense for Cain and Black Veil. He takes great pride in his job, is fully prepared to sacrifice everything in order to keep everyone he cares about safe and the world from crumbling. But the Tritons and Sirens have approved a treaty, and the dragons will most likely agree to allow vampires to use their blood for sustenance and protection once again, so all is as it should be. Then Emil meets the emperor of dragons, and his life goes from calm to chaotic in the blink of an eye—loyalty and love now battle for dominance in his head.

Aldrich is the emperor of dragons, and he cannot afford to make mistakes. He and his clans enter Black Veil in the hopes that The Blood Boss will join them in the fight to save his family. Aldrich is ready to lay down his life and for anything else thrown his way—except the crystal-eyed vampire who immediately captures his interest. Emil is everything he has always wanted and would never dare dream of, and when all he holds dear is threatened, it’s Emil who keeps his dragon grounded.

When unimaginable dangers swarm into Black Veil, the vampires and dragons join forces and call upon every living creature in Black Veil to defeat the enemy. While love blooms, lives perish, all to fight a war against the darkness threatening to consume the world. Will Emil and Aldrich claim victory and have their happily ever after, or are they doomed to an eternity apart?

This is the kind of book that you sit and think "I'll start for a bit, five minutes" and the next thing you know you're halfway through and your coffee is cold. I did waffle over giving it 5 stars, but to me it feels like a 4.5 status. I adored it, but it isn't my ultimate fave by Davidson (snow falling, head rush, raven's heart and they call him levity are still top dogs). This series is, however, fighting for its second place in my favorite Davidson series.
I just adore the vibe, the mix of mafia bosses energy with the supernatural elements. It plays on the strengths Davidson has, yet adds a fun extra element to make it more fresh. I feel this book added more world clarity to things that felt a bit vague in the first one in the series. Though it feels like the vagueness is not because Davidson hasn't thought things through, but because the characters themselves don't know. That adds a bit more complexity to the world, and I do enjoy a complex world.
I'm keeping my fingers crossed that we see more, with Bash and Pertu maybe.

Dragons, Dragons, Dragons. Who doesn't love dragons. I was so happy that this vol focused on the dragons.
Aldrich the emperor of dragons has come to Black Veil at the request of Cain. Cain wants to resume their treaty, where the dragons provided blood to the vampires in Black Veil. While Aldrich wants to agree, he has some conditions. first.
Aldrich was such a surprise. The way he wasn't the most intimidating was refreshing. Too often we read that the ruler of dragons is this hulking individual that you can't help but see that they are in charge. He wasn't like that and I loved it. Aldrich is such a caring dragon. He cares deeply for all his dragons and feels their lose when he losing one. He has come to Black Veil, hoping that Cain will help him with a problem that had come up. He wasn't expecting to meet his fated.
Emil the head of security is tasked with being one of the vampires to initially help Aldrich. With him knowing the ins and outs of Black Veil, he was the obvious choice. He of course has no problem helping the emperor. He is drawn to the emperor but he didn't know why. He later finds out that they are fated, but that sorrow awaits them.
This was a good follow up. We get to learn more about the paranormals that are connected the Black Veil. We get introduced to many new faces and catch up on our favorites from the first volume. This isn't a vol I would miss.

Fire & Ice

Dragons, vampires, a battle against an insidious foe, and a love that sinks it’s teeth into you and won’t let go: It can only be the amazingly entrenching world of Black Veil. “Is this vampire going to be the salvation I long for…or my destruction?” Gah!!! And how about…nope you’ve got to read it for yourself. I love everything about Emil and Aldrich. From the whole “our two species need each other but we don’t like it” beginning to the “I would burn the world down and tear everyone’s head off to keep you safe” all-consuming love they have, I am here forever more for these two. So many intense, action-packed emotions you’ll experience and I can’t say much about what happens but know it’s all worth it because at the end, you’ll be surrounded by the incredible found family of Black Veil, and of course, swooning and happily captivated by the smoldering combo of Aldrich and Emil. Oh and I am so ready for who’s next, that stubborn idiot *said in a loving manner*.

Empower of dragons

Davidson king has created a wonderful world on Black Veil that is not only Vampires but there’s dragons, fairies and so much more. I am really enjoying this series.

Emil heads security for the Blood Boss, Cain. Although it’s been quiet since the last battle, a war is brewing. Aldrich is the Emperor of Dragons and he is comes to town to seek help from the vampires as darkness and dark magic have affected his family and now in Black Veil.

I enjoyed returning to this world, Emil and Aldrich’s story, and seeing past secondary characters and the set up of the next book. Although this is the second story in the series, it could be read as a stand alone but to me would be more enjoyable to read book one first.

In this instalment of the series we are introduced to some more creatures, creatures that use their magic for evil purposes. One outcome of their evil intentions is the arrival in Black Veil of Aldrich the Emperor of Dragons, who just happens to have sizzling chemistry with Emil who is the vampire in charge of security. The chemistry between them very quickly leads to some hot and steamy times which only further cements the connection between them. All the while the dark threat looms over Black Veil and as its evil intentions become clear Aldrich and Emil find themselves and their friends in a fight for their lives. Cue some feels before Aldrich and Emil get their well deserved HEA.

This was another wonderfully engaging and enjoyable read with two very likeable main characters who are well supported by the characters from the previous book and some very interesting new faces.

I absolutely LOVED this fantastic, emotionally, five alarm flaming hot, amazing, fascinating, gritty, gripping, more twists and turns than a roller coaster, and totally awesome entry in this magnificent new series. This mega talented author has taken the same old, stale, run of the mill, and boring paranormal storyline, and given it her own fresh, original, and different twist. Filled with dragons, vampires, witches, and myriad other paranormals, I would definitely recommend getting this ASAP!!!

Dragons and Vampires as fated mates?? It worked with Emil and Aldrich. Glad in the end both of their families didn’t stop what fate deemed right.

My review for this book is similar to book one. I mostly read this one to distract my mind without an emotional connection. I did not connect with these characters either and although we got more world building, it simply wasn't enough for me to become fully invested in the story and plot.

Knowing what I know now about this book, would I still read it if I went back in time?
Maybe? Again, I'd go for the Haven Hart series first.

See below for the four criteria I use to decide whether and when to read a book

CHARACTERS: This is an interesting situation with the characters. We meet the Emperor of the Dragons, Aldrich, and if I'm quite honest, I have no idea why he was chosen to become the emperor of the dragons. It's not simply hereditary and there is a sacrifice involved for it to occur and nothing about his character really made me instinctively understand why he had the position. As for Emil, he's the most likeable of all of the characters so far (save one, who I think we are following in book three). But overall, their relationship felt very much the same as the first book. Even though they're 'fated', there simply wasn't any time to feel that the connection between them developed organically and felt realistic. I also skimmed the romance scenes here as well because I wasn't invested in the characters so much as the plot, and the romance scenes were very cliche overall, so I wasn't missing anything there, as it didn't feel like it fit the characters.

PLOT: This time the dragons come to Black Veil asking for help in saving one of their own who happens to be imprisoned in Black Veil by a new threat. The vampires and dragons end up working together to face off against this evil while Aldrich and Emil develop their romantic relationship throughout. This one had just a little bit more stakes, but the intensity is similar to book one and is over far too quickly to really feel a sense of achievement and fulfillment.

EMOTIONAL INTENSITY: There is no good/bad here. Sometimes I just want a low-investment entertainment read whereas other times a high-stakes 'I need a therapist to recover' is what I need.

1:5/low. Again, another great beach read for those of us who don't read a traditional 'beach read' book!

CATHARTIC FULFILLMENT: Is the emotional journey worth it? Do I finish this book feeling that I've crested the wave of the climactic moment and everything has been settled, leaving me settled and fulfilled?

25%. HEA, yes. But again, no emotional connection established so everything is wrapped up and done. Great distraction for the overwhelmed mind.

*I received an early copy of this book and this is my honest review.*

So, as stated above I received an early copy of this book. Since I did get a copy early I decided to reread the first in this series, The Blood Boss. I'm so glad I decided to read them back to back, it made the experience much more enjoyable. While you can read the two books as two separate standalones, I highly recommend reading them in order.

After a war with the creatures of the sea the people and creatures in Black Veil never thought they would be at war with a forest. A forest of pure evil. Not just that but they would have never thought that they would be fighting alongside dragons. Even the Emperor of Dragons himself.

Writing this review is complicated for me because I don't know how to describe this story in my own words without giving away spoilers!

Emil is a vampire, he's also the Blood Boss's right hand man. So, when the Emperor of Dragons arrives on their doorstep asking for help on a personal matter Emil is the guy for the job.

Aldrich needs help. Who better to ask for help then the Blood Boss himself? When he arrived in Black Veil he never expected to find Emil. He was told long ago that with him being the Emperor of Dragons he was never going to have a fated mates. However, upon arriving in Black Veil he finds out just how wrong that is. Being fated mates makes both of these guys happy but with potential war on the horizon they can't really celebrate.

Here are my thoughts on this book:

Excellent writing, the characters are well thought out and each character adds something to the overall storyline.

Phenomenal background! I was blown away with how well the background was written in the first book and I'm so happy that it continued into this story as well.

Fated mates was a feature in this story but it wasn't the main focus of this story. I think while I'm on this topic I'll say my only "issue" with this book is I wish there was a little more focus on Emil and Aldrich being mates. However, I understand why that wasn't a forefront in this book.

If you're looking for slow burn this isn't the book for you. But! If you're looking for a book that will make you feel every emotion all in one sitting, than this is for you. If you love Sirens, Merpeople, Vampires, dragons, pixies and much, much, more than this is definitely for you! If it isn't obvious already I highly recommend this!!

4.5/5 stars.
The story was compelling and interesting. I loved seeing Cain and Jayden again. I loved seeing so many different creatures and to know more about this world in general.
I found the way fated mates for Dragons works to be very interesting. I haven’t read a story yet that had this type of connection when fated so I loved that.

I love Aldrich and how sweet and reasonable he is. I just love how he’s so precious but when needed he turns into this big scary dragon, I loved everything about him.
Emil definitely didn’t see Aldrich coming but when it’s meant to be it’s meant to be. Emil is such an honorable guy and he was willing to do so much for everyone. He’s such an amazing guy, loved him.

Their relationship proceeded pretty quickly and that’s why I took half star off my rating . Not necessarily because they were engaging in their relationship but more so than the “I love you” part was out there pretty early on. I know they were fated and that they knew that but that’s not like a switch is turned on in the very interaction they had and boom it’s love. Obviously I’m not trying to downplay what they felt for each other when they met cause they had feelings they never felt before but it wasn’t enough reason for me to say “ yeah it makes sense that they love each other”. But hey maybe it was love at first sight 🤷‍♀️
Now don’t get me wrong, I loved the story and their relationship but ultimately I wanted a bit more of their relationship before the L word.
Fire and Ice make some sexy times, let me tell ya.
I loved the epilogue and I can’t wait to see more of Emil and Aldrich.

I was sad that Aldrich sister did what she did but ultimately it was for the best of everyone including her. Loved her daughter and I’ll love to see more of her.
Jayden made me proud when he used his power on the woodfarie. I love the guy ☺️
I’m super excited for Petru and Bash story. Petru is a grumpy guy so I’m loving this combo already. I’m also very looking forward to see when Petru threw punches at a human and how all that turned out.

The Black Veil Series by Davidson King takes place in a world where the veil between realities/universes broke. Joining humanity on earth is a diverse multitude of lifeforms. In The Blood Boss, book 1 of the series, Black Veil is shown as belonging to the vampires.

In Emperor of Dragons, as the title suggest, the emperor of all dragons is introduced. Aldrich is coming to Black Veil to propose a treaty between his realm and Cain's. There are many items on the pro list to accept the treaty. The best one is the ability of a vampire to survive on only a very small amount of dragon blood every six months. Big win for the vampires, right?

Emil, Cain's best friend and bodyguard, is not thrilled by the coming visit. Every dragon he has met has been a pertinacious ass. As he waits to hear what the dragons want for their blood, he finds himself intrigued by the emperor. Then, the dragons reveal what they want from the vampires. It is not so simple anymore. Whether romance, politics, or war Aldrich and Emil must come to terms, the best terms for their own people.

Dragons in Black Veil!

Davidson King did a wonderful job building the world of Black Veil in The Blood Boss, and improves that world even more in Emperor Of Dragons. We still have the wonderful characters from The Blood Boss, plus a new cast of characters to fall in love with. There are already several new characters whose stories I’m hoping to read in future!

As a dark and dangerous part of Black Veil we’ve yet to see comes to light, vampire Emil meets dragon Aldrich, and their story begins. Aldrich had always thought that as Emperor he would never be granted love. But then he meets Emil, who quickly becomes the most important person in Aldrich’s world. Aldrich came to Black Veil to help the vampires, and in turn be helped by them. A dragon has been murdered, and another kidnapped, and the trail leads straight to Black Veil. Dragon and vampire must trust one another and work together to fight the evil that has permeated Black Veil, or all worlds will be destroyed. The danger to all becomes deadly, and Aldrich may lose the love he’s just found. Add a seer into the mix that seems to be seeing nothing good, and you have an edge-of-your-seat story that you don’t want to miss!

Thank you Davidson King! I have been in a book slump until I started Emperor of Dragons! This book certainly cured me of that. I devoured this story in one sitting and then went back in for an immediate reread.

The story pulls you in right off the bat and doesn't let you go until you reach the very end. Full of characters that will intrigue, captivate and steal your heart this story is all about love, sacrifice, community, hope and so much more.

The world building is outstanding. Written in such a way that the reader becomes a part of that world.

Aldrich and Emil captured my heart right away. Their instant connection becomes so much more than either could have hoped for. The support and love that they share is amazing. When thrust into an epic battle of good vs evil all that they hold dear is at risk. With an army of supernatural beings joining in the odds are in their favor! The ending is all I could have wished for.
Now I am eagerly awaiting to see what comes next in the Black Veil series.

One word: dragons. Second word: vampires. What else do you need? A little spicy time, and a little unrest between dragons and the fae.

The story begins with the Emperor of Dragons, Aldrich making a visit to Black Veil with a party of dragons for a meeting with Cain. Soon he makes a deal, help save his dragon niece from the fae and he will donate dragon blood for the vampires. While Cain agrees to this, Emil, Cain’s leading bodyguard feels a pull to the Emperor. Soon Emil is spending his nights with the Emperor of Dragons and his days fighting for the return of the Emperor’s niece.

Aldrich and Emil feel an instant pull from their first meeting. Soon, they accidentally unlock a future for themselves that means an end before it can begin and they must figure out to be together before it’s too late.

This story is another banger from Davidson King with a good plot twist and HEA. Another must read.

Black Veil finds itself at peace, but this tranquility is short-lived as a looming threat surfaces. Emil, head of security and protector of Black Veil, is dedicated to safeguarding his home and loved ones. Meanwhile, Aldrich, emperor of dragons, seeks allies to rescue his family and protect his people. Their worlds collide when Emil and Aldrich meet, sparking a deep connection amidst their shared responsibility to fight against the encroaching darkness. As vampires, dragons, and the inhabitants of Black Veil unite to face unimaginable dangers, Emil and Aldrich's bond grows stronger. Yet, the battle raises the question—will their love endure or will the fight for survival tear them apart?

I loved this story which was full of passion, danger and drama. I loved that this story involved all of the groupings we already knew of and some totally new ones too. Love was central to this story whether that was for a fated mate, sister or child. There were also evil creatures with the only aims of darkness or chaos. Easy to read, feel and understand. This was an MM story with mature content.

This is the 2nc book of the BVS, this book has some very powerful moments, Aldrich is the emperor of dragons, and Emil is head of BV security. This book is based on good vs evil, fated mates and lost love. Emil and the dragons are a very closed off species/community so when Aldrich seeks out Cain The Blood Boss for help and he in return will give dragon blood to the Vamps, this partnership as unlikely as it seems is the start of a beautiful story. I will say that the emotion in this book is written with such care, I found myself heartbroken at times for Aldrich and his family. The strength that Aldrich showed and the pure dedication from Emil showed us why these two fated mates are my new favorites.

This story will have you in tears before you know it, the connection between Aldrich and Emil was just raw and powerful. The other characters bring some quick smiles and some hopeful guess on who will book 3 be about. I can't wait.

This book was everything. Davidson King has done it again. This author continues to give me books that I just get so sucked into that I can't put them down. This is the second installment to the Black Veil series and I absolutely loved it. This story follows Aldrich, the Emperor of Dragons as he builds an alliance with the vampires of Black Veil for both group's benefit. During his quest to stop the danger that hunts his family, he finds the unexpected in Emil. Their bond is quick and all-consuming. They have to fight for their love as they hunt an evil that threatens everything that they hold dear. There was absolutely nothing about this book that I didn't love. The characters were awesome. I enjoyed Aldrich and Emil falling in love. And it was so action-packed that it set my teeth on edge. This book gave everything it was supposed to give and more. Five star read. Definite recommend.

This story sucked me in, didn’t let me go easily. I freakin love Dragon/Vampire stories especially ones that are fated mates. The author knocked this one out of the ballpark. It was magical, full of so many paranormal entities. Dragons, vampires, merfolk, fairy’s, fae, witches and seer. Emil is head of security for Cain who we met in The Blood Boss. Aldrich is the emperor of dragons. Aldrich has come to the Black Veil needing to help his family that has been taken by dark magic. He finds his fated mate in Emil. Spicy, steamy with a side of sweet and sizzling chemistry!!! Overall, a fantastic read!! The story was really well written, the pacing flowed so well that the story wouldn’t let me go, highly recommend

Emil, the right hand man of the Blood Boss, and Aldrich, Emperor of Dragons are front and center of this book. Aldrich has come into town to seek the help of Cain what he doesn’t expect is to find his fated mate. Emil knows the Cain’s territory better than anyone so he is paired with Aldrich to give him the feel of the lay of the land. A war is coming to Black Veil and it is all hands on deck because the vampires and dragons are going to have to pull out all of their tricks to defeat the woodland fairies in this battle. While they are strategizing how to defeat them Emil and Aldrich are getting hot and heavy between the sheets. When the dust all settles from the battle will everyone come out unscathed?

This book made me run the whole gauntlet of emotions. Emil and Aldrich are put the the wringer at times. But they come together to try and fix it. They are both willing to sacrifice themselves to save the other, and to help their friends and families. It’s so amazing to see their love for one another grow into a beautiful heartwarming love. Seeing all the characters try to figure out how to save each other. The way they want to save the town and it’s inhabitants makes me feel like this is an amazingly wonderful place to want to be a part of. The family, because these aren’t just friends, making sure that the other is happy and healthy is beautiful to watch happening. They love and care about each other.

This book was just as amazing as I thought it was going to be! Emil and Aldrich we're such wonderful characters and I loved getting to read their HEA. I also enjoyed seeing Cain and Jayce again, the two that started this amazing series.

When Aldrich, the Emperor of Dragons, needs Cain's help to save his niece, well stuff happens and all of Black Veil needs to step up and prove they are far from weak. I think by far my favorite part of this book was the ending because it was absolutely perfect and it hit me right in the feels!

This book has action, romance, suspense, and it's a book that you will be reading over and over again!
I can't recommend this book enough! It is a definite must read!

Fantastic! Why aren't more people reading this and its prequel/first book?

Yep - totally recommending anyone with a paranormal-fantasy fetish read this book (after reading the first in the duet) immediately!

I absolutely enjoyed this, though there were tear-jerking moments interspersed with truly amazing, some kinda icky, paranormal species. The book concentrates details on the vampires, dragons and witches, but includes faeries (surprisingly, there's a variety of them), incubi, succubae, merfolk, and so on. The book is well written, pretty error free (not going to pick on personal peeves with grammar here), with relatable characters who happen to be magical. Five stars.

**Audiobook Review**

I was compelled to continue on with the series from listening to the Blood Boss. I loved the vampires and was very anxious to hear Emil's story with Aldrich and his dragons. It was an easy transition and a smooth continuation. More magical creatures were introduced and I love how they not like the cutesy creatures we think of...a little dark but effective on where the story takes us. There were some ominous predictions that you the listener couldn't help but think that wouldn't happen because well...this is a romance so this kept you all in until the very end. It was so good I'm so ready for the next one...And just like the last one, the narrators did their thang and was great with their voices. 5STARS!

I love the world this series is set in, and was happy to see it again as the backdrop for Emil and Aldrich’s story. The stakes of the plot are super high, which adds to the intensity of the reading experience, and the chemistry between Emil (vampire, head of Cain’s security) Aldrich (Emperor of Dragons) is super strong. I won’t spoil any storyline details here, as they deserve to be experienced in the moment, but I will say that all the things happening all the time make for an immersive, if slightly relentless, reading experience. Overall,I love the imaginativeness of the world building, the number of interesting characters who inhabit that world, and the weight of the events that take place within it. 4.5 stars.

I thoroughly enjoyed the first book in the series and was excited to jump into this one. For a second book (you absolutely should read the prior story first), this one did still have a lot of world building to it. But oh my, what a fantastical world it is indeed. I loved that Aldrich is not what I expected. Even though he is the emperor of all dragons, he has a kind presence about him - even with all the pain. I enjoyed meeting Emil in the prior story and loved the part he played in this one. With such a big world, there are fascinating side characters - and of course, the perfect set up for the next story. I so am looking forward to returning to the Balck Veil.

Dragons and Vampires ...

When evil strikes you have two choices, give in and let it take over your life or fight back with everything you have.

This is the 2 book in the series, dragons are large and magical beings. So that is who evil attacks, when help is needed who better then fierce Vampires and a powerful witch to help you overcome evil and let good prevail.

Love drives everything from greed and hatred to kindness and joy. The battle to be one is which one will we allow to rule our lives. In this story love conquers evil in more then one battle. Love comes in many forms and this books let's that show through.

I’m enjoying this new series and the fantasy paranormal world the author has created. There is a great variety of supernatural beings, and I find their interactions to be quite engaging. That being said, I still wanted the romance between Emil and Aldrich to have more of an emotional oomph. For me, I feel as though the backstory and political aspects overshadowed the romance just a touch. Not a major concern, however, as Emil and Aldrich still have a good fated mates connection and a satisfying HEA.
