When Jesus died on the cross, it seemed that all had been lost. Death had won. But after three days in a rich man's tomb, Jesus appeared…alive! The news was so shocking that His followers refused to believe it until they saw Him with their own eyes and touched His wounds with their own hands. Then Jesus made an amazing In the future, they too would have resurrected bodies like His, bodies that would never deteriorate, age or perish. They would have new life without death or pain in the presence of a loving God forever. But can we really believe His promise? For that matter, can we really believe that the promise was made by a Man who rose from the dead? In this fascinating look at the claims of the Gospel writers and 2,000 years of believing Christians, bestselling author Josh McDowell and his son Sean examine the compelling evidence and conclude that Jesus Christ conquered death and the gravel in clear, concise and accessible chapters, Josh and Sean present the fact s about the resurrection and what it means for readers today.
Josh McDowell is a bestselling Christian apologist, evangelist, and author of over 150 books, including Evidence That Demands a Verdict and More Than a Carpenter. Once an agnostic, he converted to Christianity while investigating its historical claims. He went on to earn degrees from Wheaton College and Talbot Theological Seminary. For decades, McDowell has been a prominent speaker with Campus Crusade for Christ, addressing issues of faith, character, and youth culture worldwide. His work emphasizes historical and legal evidence for Christianity and tackles challenges posed by skepticism and non-Christian beliefs. He lives in California with his wife, Dottie, and is the father of four children, including fellow apologist Sean McDowell.
I was interested in the 'evidence' to see if there had been any new finds or just exactly what he considered evidence and I did learn some interesting things that I hadn't thought of before. Specifically regarding the Roman guards that would have guarded Jesus' tomb. For me, the only down side of the book was the more subjective argument that the author felt the need to spend a lot of time on. I kept wondering who he was trying to convince since the Christians reading the book wouldn't need convincing and the non-Christians reading the book were not going to be convinced by his opinion. Having said that the 1/4 of the book (I might be exxagerating) that was spent on examination of the actual evidence was very interesting and worth the read.
Josh McDowell and his son, Sean, have done a great job laying out all the facts and the theories of the resurrection of Jesus. Evidence of the Resurrection is well-written and thoroughly documented. Here is a quote: "We must help our young people not only to understand the restorative meaning of Christ’s resurrection, but also to realize that it is an objectively true historical fact."
I read the Indian edition. First 100 or so pages is more of why resurrection matters. Actual evidence starts with page 107. Personally wish the order was reversed..authors probably had a valid reason. Worth reading...good case for the resurrection of Jesus Christ....
80% of this book was preachy garbage filler. The actual evidence was as weak as it usually is, and could have been condensed into 20 unimpressive pages.
I picked this up and put it down. It was all wind up and no pitch. Only one of the chapters dealt with the "evidence" of the resurrection and it was not as compelling as I had hoped it would have been. The only upside to what I did read of this book was some arguments against the recent trend in in comparing Christianity with other Hellenistic mystery religions.
My go to book for years on the resurrection. Josh McDowell is an excellent apologist. I recommend this highly along with is other works including Evidence That Demads A Verdict series.
There are many new books out that are also excellent and may have more current explanations. But this is the book I recommend for starters. If you can find a copy definitely add it to your library!!
This was a good book. Took a long time for me to read because there was just so much to digest. Helpful resource for historical accuracy of the resurrection.
