Retold from Icelandic legend, this tells how the king's children live in fear of their step-mother. When the king is away she tricks them and they find themselves in the land of the trolls at the mercy of her wicked sister. But the magical gifts given to them by their mother come to their aid.

I read this book to my children fifteen years ago and we have all been obsessed with it ever since. Finally, I managed to track down a secondhand copy in Texas and have it sent internationally. This book transported me to medieval Iceland, a land of menace, stark beauty, and larger-than-life myths. I can't describe how much I love and admire the storytelling in this book.
