3.75 stars--NAMELESS GIRL aka WHEN SHE LEFT is the second instalment in Kate Gable’s contemporary, adult DETECTIVE CHARLOTTE PIERCE LAST BREATH mystery suspense series focusing on Mesquite County Detective Charlotte Pierce.

NOTE: The series name has changed a couple of times; book two NAMELESS GIRL was original titled WHEN SHE LEFT, and continues to be so at several outlets- there may be some confusion for readers

Told from three first person perspectives (Charlotte, Franny, Madison) following several intersecting and separate paths NAMELESS GIRL focuses on the search for a missing nineteen year old young woman. Sixteen year old, Franny Dillard hasn’t seen her nineteen year old sister Madison in close to three weeks, and her parents appear unconcerned about their daughter’s whereabouts. In an effort to locate her sister, Franny speaks to Detective Charlotte Pierce, in the hopes the police will search for the truth but hours later, Franny arrives home to discover her parents have been murdered, and the mystery begins to spiral out of control.

Meanwhile, Charlotte has been invited to her grade eight reunion, a reunion that forces Charlotte and her friends to revisit the past when one of their own vanished without a trace.

Detective Charlotte Pierce and her partner Detective Will Torch had no idea a missing persons case would devolve so quickly but as the detectives begin a search for the truth, not all is well in Mesquite County, California as money laundering, fraud, murder for hire, extortion, arson and the Mob all coalesce into a mystery of who, what and why. As Charlotte and Will commiserate over dinner and drinks, Charlotte will be introduced to former police officer turned firefighter Dylan Ferreira.

NAMELESS GIRL is an intriguing story of suspense and mystery, murder and manipulation, secrets and lies. The premise is engaging, suspenseful and twisted; the characters are animated and passionate. If you are a fan of the author’s Detective Caitlyn Carr series, you will recognize many similarities and themes

Charlottes new case brings her past back to light and she begins to re examine things she didn’t notice all that time ago. Loved the suspense factor of this series so far

A 16-year-old girl makes a missing-person report to Detective Charlotte Pierce: her older sister vanished weeks ago, and their parents don't seem too interested in finding her. Only hours after making the report, though, the parents are murdered in their own driveway...
The girl's disappearance triggers memories of a school friend of Charlotte's, who vanished when they were 13. The case has gone cold, but she feels she owes it to her friend to reopen it.
A well-plotted mystery/suspense novel that left me anticipating the next in the series.
I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

A 19 year old girl goes missing and her parents don't think anything of it. Then the parents are found dead in their home. Detective Charlotte Pierce is assigned to the case. A reunion and a reminder of a classmate gone missing 20 years ago. Great story line keeps you reading and wanting another novel.

Interesting story that involves two current cases and one cold case. The cold case was briefly mentioned in book one and now we start learning more. Am introduction of a love interest was fun and the relationship is sweet and quirky. The partner dynamic with Will is still present. Good pacing and story. I enjoyed finding out the answers to the current cases and am intrigued to see what happens next in the cold cases.

I am confused on several things though. 1) Why are the titles different in Goodreads and Amazon? 2) Why is Will being in the relationship still a faux pas? 3) Why would they be in trouble since they were 13? 4) Why would anybody think it was cute/funny to break into someone’s home at 2am?

I received an ARC of Nameless Girl and I am voluntarily leaving a review. Nameless Girl is book 2 in the Charlotte Pierce mystery series. So far I am enjoying the series. There is a little action, a little romance and a lot of mystery. There are 2 mysteries that need to be solved. There is never a dull moment in the book. I cannot wait for book 3 to come out.

Another great book about detective Charlotte pierce. What starts out a missing person case for Charlotte looking for a young girl turns more deadly. Can Charlotte find the missing girl and solve a murder at the same time?

First, let me preface this review by stating that Kate Gable has built a reputation as a writer of fast-paced female detective mysteries and murders that aren’t afraid to totally surprise the reader. If you are looking for a good female detective series that has a tough protagonist with a messy personal life and missing young girls—well, here you go! The plot to this story is suspenseful, fast moving with lots of twists and turns that will keep you on the edge of your seat from the beginning to the end. This was a great story (if read only)—it builds up to a heart pounding pace that continued to increase. Charlotte Pierce is a detective and twenty years later, she returns to her small town for a middle school reunion. There were things that happened twenty years ago about a 13 year old girl that Charlotte and her friends knew about the missing girl, but she and her friends lied about what happened, and the secret of what they did has haunted Charlotte ever since. Now, another teenage girl is reported missing from her home town. Will Charlotte be able to find out what happened to the the missing girl years ago as well as with the teenage girl that is currently missing?

Actually, listening to this audio, it took all of my willpower to push through the story on Bookfunnel while listening to the narrator’s (Madison Gilpin) monotone and choppy voice—her voice put me to sleep a couple of times. Also, the narrator had no inflection in her voice when acting surprised, angry, and/or portraying another character. I felt like she was reading to a child. Since I loved Kate Gable’s previous books, I should have read the book instead of listening to this audio. I have listened to other female detective mysteries/thrillers and have loved them. I would suggest other female narrators such as, January LaVoy, Kate Zane, Michele Moran, and Je Nie Fleming who are very good narrators that I have listened to for female detective stories. With these narrators, I could feel the emotional connection and some degree of fluidity. Because of this narrator, I had to give this a low rating. I reviewed an Advance Reader audible of this book.

4.5 Stars - The direct approach of Kate Gable's writing is refreshing and easy to follow. She manages to create a story that the readers want to read and draws each person into the plot. Nameless Girl hits all these points and more. A missing girl from 20 years ago, a runaway teenager/adult and two murdered parents give this story a lot of directions in which she can take the storyline.

Each mystery starts to unravel and find a conclusion except for the missing girl from 20 years before. The story only begins to become more tangled as other evidence is discovered and new information comes to light. Gable does a great job of keeping the reader interested in where the story is going and makes a person want to read the next book in line.

I was happy to see the runaway was found and that the parents murderer was discovered as well. The closure on those two items rounds out the book. The cliff hanger on the missing girl is what will keep readers coming back to discover if they have found her.

Simple to read, and easy to follow along, Nameless Girl was a quick, uncomplicated read. A good storyline, with multiple plots, but not too many to overwhelm the reader. I can't wait to read the next one.

Detective Charlotte Pierce agreed to investigate a missing person case, a case that leads her to a double homicide. A teen reported her sister missing and returned home to find her parents murdered in what appears to be a revenge killing. Charlotte attends a reunion with her middle school friends to discuss their friend that disappeared twenty years ago from a concert they had attended in Los Angeles. They were scared teens and didn’t fully report what happened that night. They need to try to find out what happened to Kelsey; could she still be alive? When Charlotte meets Dylan Ferreira, a former detective, we get some insight into her personal life. When there is a break in the homicide case, will it lead them to who was responsible for the murders? An enjoyable murder mystery interwoven with the missing person case. I would have liked more information about Kelsey, as to the DNA, etc., but maybe that will be in the next book. I received an advance review copy at no cost and without obligation from the author for an honest review. (paytonpuppy)

This is book two in A Detective Charlotte Pierce Mystery in The Last Breath series and omg it is definitely a must read. When Franny's sister Madison disappears her mother and father doesn't take it seriously but after three weeks Cranny decides to go and report it to the police and she speaks to Charlotte who is a detective but after getting all the details later on in the day she gets a frantic call from Granny who has gone home and found both of her parents read but who did it and why. When Charlotte goes to a reunion with her friend's they discussed the disappearance of there friend Kelsey who disappeared when they went to a concert when they were younger and Charlotte has decided to look into the case and all the information that was collected to see if she can find evidence. Wow this series is so addictive and had you on the edge of your seat while turning the pages and I can't wait to read the next book.

I Voluntarily Reviewed a Copy of This Book.

Initially I thought this book was going to be slow, but how wrong I was, there was lots going on from different angles.

When Franny turns up at the police station to report her sister Maddison missing, that is only the start of the problems, when she returns home to find both of her parents murdered she calls Charlotte again, but there was something strange about their deaths, and it is up to Charlotte and Will to find out who killed them and why.

meanwhile Charlotte goes to a friends reunion and she and her friends talk about a secret they have been keeping since they were 13, Charlotte wants to reopen the case and investigate their friends disappearance, can she find her lost friend?

I loved this book, so much going on with two murders and two disappearances to solve, I cant wait to read the next book in this series.

This author is fond of inserting side stories that go unfinished into the next books- such as Charlotte's missing middle school friend which is partially resolved and then the missing brother of her new boyfriend. It's an annoying way to get you to read the next book.

The main story of the parents of a missing girl that are murdered in front of their home . Is it an execution or revenge killing. Was it the missing daughter? Charlotte does most of the investigating without partner Will but with some help from the new former cop now firefighter boyfriend the help of her Dad the FBI agent.

Good story, good writing, but...

I liked this story a lot, and also liked the main characters. It's a solid mystery/thriller without too much graphic blood and gore or sadistic brutality. I like the relationships that develop between some of the characters (friendships as well as romance) and how Charlotte honestly wants to take care of the innocent victims.

My only complaint? The editing. I came across many errors, mostly punctuation but also some word use and sentence structure errors, and I find this distracting. If the editing were cleaner, I'd give the novel five stars. Still, it's well worth a read, and I'm looking forward to reading the next in the series.

I enjoyed the mystery story. Charlotte Pierce is a cop with a secret from her childhood. She is investigating a double murder and goes to her high school reunion where she decides to investigate what happened to her friend all those years ago. The storyline is interesting and the characters are relatable. The story is well written with unexpected twists that kept me reading. I would highly recommend it. I received an advance copy of this book and this is my honest review.

interesting but …

Just that, an interesting plot but too much personal stuff and little actual mystery solving. Things line up pretty neatly to wrap up the cases that are probably secondary to the main one that’s been burdening Charlotte since middle school. Hope this one is more nuanced …

Nameless Girl gives more background info Detective Pierce’s childhood, specifically regarding an incident that had been kept secret almost 20 years. While learning more about her past, Detective Pierce also sparks a new relationship with a colleagues friend, definitely a spark for her! And throughout the midst of things, she’s also able to solve a double homicide.

Kate Gable is very good @ snatching the attention of her readers with her mysteries and murder stories. I myself love following Detective Charlotte Pierce's investigations into missing people, murders and the mystery behind each one. It gives me a chance to play amateur sleuth as the Detective solves each case. Looking forward to the next book.

Confused and choppy

Can't even understand why this was published. No suspense at all in the solving of the primary mystery--it just finishes in a banal and ordinary way. Much conversation and very little action, jumps from situation to situation with no connection.

😍 loved it

I absolutely loved this book. It kept me guessing every time I thought I knew what was going on or who might have done it BAM I was wrong. It’s okay I was wrong because that just made the book even better 😃! I can’t wait to read the next book in this series.

Listened to an audio version as an ARC.

The story itself is pretty good but the audio reading was awful. It was very robotic and I assume it was some sort of tech rather than a person reading it.
