‘Do you ever go into the kitchen, purposefully because you’re busy, and open a cupboard door and suddenly you’re lost?’

This novel is set in a small Australian coastal town called Pocket Head. Pocket Head could be the kind of Australian coastal town where many of us have spent a summer holiday. We connect, fleetingly, with the locals to learn about fishing, swimming and shopping but we rarely get to know them. Every once in a while you read a book that after you've finished the last page, you want to just 'sigh' and hold the book to your heart. You think how sad if you'd never discovered the existence of that book....The Book Thief was such a book for me. So is Swimming With The Jellyfish by Vicki Hastrich. I had never heard of this book or the author and found this wonderful little book at one of my local op-shops. I picked it up and read the back blurb, put it back on the shelf and kept browsing, th ...more

Just finished Swimming with the Jellyfish by Vicki Hastrich. Australian author, set in a small coastal town it has an interesting cast of characters. Lal is 38, her mother mysteriously disappears when she is 15 and she and her father never get over it. She joins the Historical Society and discovers things about the history of the town. Well written, the book flows and immerses you like a jellyfish in water.

I would rate this between a 2 and 3 star. It was a short quick read, but a bit shallow. I was left wondering why the main character would do what she did. Regardless, it was a cute story - a good vacation read.

I stuck with this novel because it possesses something charming and I liked the main character ... but a novel needs a good story, and for my money this story didn't begin until about 3/4 of the way in. ...more

Enjoyed this - vivid imagery, and engaging writing. Hastrich's writing style reminds me of Helen Garner, she chooses her words carefully and describes certain situations perfectly - there is an almost physical jolt of recognition. ...more
