Lust is a siren . . .

Greed is a dragon . . .

But revenge is the most seductive mistress of all.

Held captive in Dur-Athaara, Malach would give anything to return to the land he once despised.

But the witch-queen has declared him too dangerous to run loose, a prophecy that proves right when he escapes to wreak havoc on a continent already poised at the brink of civil war.

Across the sea in the icy fortress of Sinjali’s Lance, Alexei's brother grows more dangerous by the day. Desperate to find a cure for Mikhail's Nightmark, they return to Nantwich, where Kasia is hunting the Order of the Black Sun.

Forbidden to use her power, she walks a razor’s edge. The Red King stalks her dreams. Is she strong enough to resist his seductive whispers?

As armies gather, and the Black Sun rises over the Morho Sarpanitum, sworn enemies must join forces to stop an unspeakable evil from devouring the world.

Once again Kat Ross gives us a “Slam Dunk,” Shatters the Backboard, of a novel.
This, however, is a tad bit different than her usual work, but “DON’T” let that “FOOL” you at all.🏀

LET US BEGIN: Ross begins her novel with a SLOW BURN (you heard me) on the Island of Dur-Athaara, where the witches have captured Malach, and are holding him captive since City of Wolves. The Mahadeva feels that it is unsafe to allow Malach to roam free. so, with the Kaldarite that Paarjini has placed in Malachs abdomen, to track him (and to keep him from touching the ley) he has no choice but to fulfill the tasks that they ask of him. However, the latest task is a crèche, where he is a babysitter to 4- and 5-year-olds. Malach has never taken care of a child before in his life.

But he will prove the Crone and the witches wrong, he will succeed.

But the witches have bet that he will fail before the year is out.

Meanwhile Nikola Thorne has escaped the horrible captivity of her jailer, Pontifex Falke. He captured Nikola in Novostopol while she was pregnant, forced to have her daughter while captive, then stole the baby.

Nikola escapes in a dinghy and by divine intervention arrives on the sandy shores of Dur-Athaara. Where she is told by the Crone, maid, and mother that she was meant to find the island. That the island is where she belongs because she has great power, and that she is a witch. Nikola cannot believe what she hears, for she has been unmarked for all her life. Never having been able to touch the ley, now all of a sudden, she is a witch. The Mahadeva tells her that with training, she will be able to do all she wants and more.

Nikola is a natural and a quick study at what she does not know. Nikola ends up “forcing” and reuniting with Malach on the island. Once she tells him their daughter is alive, he begs Nikola to take him to her in Novostopol. Nikola can never say no to the man she loves and ends up using her name stone to “force” to Novostopol.

When they arrive in Novostopol, Malach takes Pontifex Falke hostage and forces him to take him to his daughter Rachel. Rachel fears for Falkes life because she believes that Falke is her father. As Nikola begins to be pulled into a “Force,” Rachel breaks free, Malach runs after her and scoops her up to try to get back to Nikola in time. But just as he reaches Nikola, “Poof!” she is gone.

With no where to go but death, he threatens Rachel by telling her he will kill Falke if she does not use her power over the stars. He never wanted to force his child to use her ability, but he also did not want to die without knowing his daughter fully.

His daughter not only made the stars fall, but she also caused a meteoric catastrophe. Malach, Falke and Rachel flee Novostopol for safer grounds, they flee for Bal Kirith. Next stop Nantwich.

On the other side of the world, Alexi and his brother Mikhail are at Jalghuth with Lezarius, when they hear that Novostopol has fallen. They are then summoned to Nantwich to attend a counsel meeting, to decide if they will be joining forces against His Eminence Balaur. Who has nothing but his own agenda of triumphing over humanity? However, Alexi (now Nuncio to Lezarius) is worried for his brother, that although his mark was “CURED” FOR INVERTIDO, the message from the children is still haunting him. He still feels that Mikhail will become a danger to himself and those around him. However, Lezarius does not fear Mikhail at all and has named him his master of arms and refuses to leave Mikhail behind.

Alexi must be on constant guard that “all that glitters is not gold”

On the Island of Dur-Athaara, Nikola is furious that the sisters have forced her to return, and Nikola demands to be sent back to Novostopol and Malach at once.
Mahadeva refuses and tells her the plain has already been set in motion, that they will get the child back somehow, one way or another.

Back at Nantwich, Kasia, Petyr and Natalya are awaiting the great meeting of the eminences to happen, to see If they will unite against Balaur.

Cardinal Gray has been told to guard Kasia and remind her that the reverend mother does not trust her yet, and that she is not to touch the ley with her newfound cartomancer powers. Lucas also informs them that the 3 should remain indoors because Pontifex Clavis will be at the counsel meeting. She still holds a grudge against Kasia for Faizah’s murder.

But somehow Kasia is able to go between the walls to the city within the city, using just the tiniest threads of ley. Which only SETS OFF A HUGE DEBAUCHERY. So! My fellow Kat Ross fans, I have given you the “Slow Burn” aspect part of the book.

Now I want you to imagine yourself in your murdered out Charger, (do not forget your seat belt) Rev that engine, because we are about to go with Ross on the “AUTOBAHN” She was only setting the novel up in the first half, now she is full on battle scenes and true to form now. Kicking ass and Leaving names in Nantwich.

Ross is an extraordinarily talented author with a gift of never letting you in on who is actually a villain, or not.

She will have you guessing, and you would be totally wrong.

With an expressively, picturesque, imaginative world. Her battle scenes are “EPIC” and always feel true to life.

Ross is a master word smith, which eloquently shines during the second half of her novel.

Her characters are thoroughly amazing, from Malach all the way to the winking Char.

By book 3, the main character’s will be near and dear to your heart, while the bad guys.

Well! Let us just say “Karma’s a Bitch and Then you Die”

Now my fellow readers, do be prepared. Ross put plenty of work into this novel and she did not word dump whatsoever, nor overly depict to fill pages.

This is an actual novel, not just a pile on pile of word dump.

But this long review, gave you not one spoiler. But I will give you a quick one.

The end of the novel, Ross caught me slipping. I was actually like “WTF?”

Mouth totally hanging open. 😮

Thinking “WTF Kat” Then I remembered.

That is all I can tell you! Trust me, the endings going to get you.

She nailed it... LOL

Kat Ross is IMPRESSIVE!!!

WOULD READ HER GROCERY LIST!

FANTASTICALLY SPLENDIND

READY FOR THE NEXT ONE!

Another gripping instalment of the Nightmarked series. This is one of those worlds that continues to expand and surprise, populated by eccentric and unusual characters who grow on you like jungle creepers. We get action, intrigue, nuanced situations, foreshadowing, lore (so much lore), war, banter, bad baddies and... well, bad goodies too.

If you like the idea of a quirky paranormal/urban fantasy that grows ever more into a big epic new adult fantasy, then you will love this series so far.

It's a long book, so there are times when the pacing could feel a little slow. As much as I was amused by seeing a mad/bad/dangerous to know character play daddy day care at the start, I was champing at the bit for the story to really move. That said, when it got going, it really got interesting. Still slow, but oh so worth the time just for all those little character interactions and weird revelations that makes the world of Nightmarked so alive. If like me you're struggling with those early chapters, push on through.

The best thing here was getting to know the witches of Dur-Athaara. We've already spent time with the Via Sancta priests, hung out with the mad mages, but these secretive people are yet another revelation of fantasy blended cultures mixed with an original lithomancy magic that Ross really makes her own as much as she had with the tarot card themed ley magic. All this and nary an info-dump in sight; I love how the world building all feels natural as part of the narrative.

Don't forget the cast. Everyone gets the chance to shine, change and grow. Sure, much of the time is still spent with our fave four of Kasia, Nikola, Malach and Alexei, but you get to see things from a few more perspectives. Alexei's brother and their relationship plays a much bigger role here, and for once it's nice to see characters who love each other but aren't BFFs. There's a lot of that kind of nuance with the characters that makes them feel more real rather than tropey, reactive fictional constructs. I'm still not quite feeling the friendship and romantic chemistry (though there's much, much less in this book), and occasionally characters could act in ways that seemed jarring , but they're still a fascinating crew.

You think you know where this story is going. You think that there can't be much more plot to wrap up in book 4. You'd be very, very wrong. The foreshadowing is there and it is as delicious as the world building before it.

It has that perfect hook at the end that promises another dive through the rabbit hole that is the Nightmarked world, and I can't wait to find out just how deep and dark it goes.

City of Keys (Nightmarked, #3) ♦ Kat Ross | Review

After City of Storms and City of Wolves, Kat Ross pulled me again in to her amazing Nightmarked series. It was fun meeting up again with Kasai, Alexei, Malach and Nikola.

City of Keys started kind of slow, which let the suspense of the whole plot grew piece by piece.

City of Keys

City of Keys ♦ Kat Ross

Opinion

I really would like to say a lot of great things about City of Keys, but I do not want to spoil anyone by giving away too much of the plot.

While all the characters follow their missions and while I was drawn into each of their paths Ross never gave me a chance to really be sure of who is the true antagonist or protagonist in this story. This kind of suspense and curiosity kept me glued to the pages. But nevertheless I kept guessing. There were a couple of moments in the plot, when I thought I am sure just to be tangled up in another twist. Magnificent.

Kat Ross‚ has a very artistic and scenic writing style, and her detailed described world rounds up the plot. Sometimes I felt a bit overwhelmed by all these words due to the fact that English is not my mother tongue. But her battle scenes are extremely spectacular, and they felt quite realistic. Her world building in the third installment isn’t as strong anymore as in the previous books. But that’s fine, because by now I kind of know my way around. But Ross‚ character development is strong and unique.

The flawed heroes, or villains, keep rising to their challenges were very fascinating. Kat Ross also gave a bit more clarity on the different magical systems like the Marks, the Cartomancy, the Alchemy, and the Lithomancy, but she never over explained and therefore ruined the plot. The political drama within the plot offered some twists and turns.

Conclusion

In the end I have to say, even though Ross provided more explanation on the magic of her world, I still feel a bit left in the dark. This did not diminish the joy I had reading City of Keys. Quite the opposite. Now I am very curious what the author will have in store for me in the next and final installment City of Dawn.

Oh boy, we've come a long way since the last stime we were here.

After a seemingly peaceful beginning that's needed to set the stage, things quickly take off and lots of shit hits the fan.

The characters growth is top-notch and the world building continues to be deliciously done and dazzling. I really loved the lore, the magic system, the role tarots play in it and yeah, I was very happy to see my beloved characters continue to grow, especially how - compared to previous books - Malach changed for the better (thanks to Nikola and a few "things" the witches put him through)

Nikola if possible became even more badass and the witches... I'm in love with their kick-ass attitude, their outfits and the way they use the ley.

Oh and remember when I said that shit definitely hits the fan, here?
Plot twists abound! And it's bloody awesome!
Some of them I did expect, others were huge surprises, these hit me like bricks... suddenly and painfully.
Man, I'm honestly still reeling from all of it.

Can't wait to see what the final book has in store for us. Somehow I can already safely bet it's going to be something explosive 💣!!

City of Keys: Nightmarked Book 3 of 4 by Kat Ross

City of Keys continues to follow Malach and Alexie on their journey. This book does have a slower start than the rest that I do find refreshing. Instead of diving straight into the action it gives you more breathing room to take in all that is happening with the characters.

The character growth in these books just gets better with each one, somehow finding yourself becoming even more attached to Alexei, Malach and Nikola and what the outcome of their journeys will but never overshadowing the other characters and what they bring to the story. I like that we get to understand more about the Magic System, kind of helps keep everything in place for me as a reader with these massive books that are filled to the brim with details, plots twists & turns, and the bad ass characters.

Looking forward to what the final book has to offer and how soul crushing the ending will be.

Previous Review of City of Storms
Previous Review of City of Wolves

This is the third installment of a four (4) book series that moves the story to the City of Nantwich (Emblem of Crossed Keys) … after a very slow start with Malach in the Land of Witches that didn’t really do much for me (although I was pleased to see an Arc of Redemption start to play out for him). Once we actually get to Nantwich things start to pick up once again … and for the first time we get an undeniable big bad as the powerful nightmage Balaur (revealed in the previous book) gathers his forces under the Banner of the Black Sun to return to power … now that the Void is gone and the Ley restored to the nightmage cities (with secrets and betrayals throughout). The previous Cold War is now very Hot … perhaps enough to even pull in the mysterious witches.

There is less world building here (still some with the Witch Realm) and once the action gets going, that pulls you through the story quickly as the focus seems to shift to more character building (especially Malach and Nikola); although we do see a few hints as to how the current world came to be and a vague reference to a bound or sleeping dragon. What I continue to find interesting are the flawed heroes that rise to the occasion to [mostly] carry the day. The magic system of Marks, Alchemy, Cartomancy, Lithomancy (Witches) gain a little more definition, but still manage to avoid becoming so over the top that it derails the plot (and I continued to enjoy that as well). What really drives this part of the series though is the political intrigue that still manages delivers surprises that place ur heroes in a variety of difficult situations. Although the bloom is off the rose, this is still a fanatic series and this book will join the others on my favorites shelf … looking forward to the conclusion in the City of Dawn (as the story moves to the southern desert).

I was given this free advance review copy (ARC) ebook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.

The character growth in these books just keeps getting better and better. I'm becoming really attached to Kasai, Alexei, Malach and Nikola and I really enjoy the Markhound, Alice. The ley built dog gets quite a bit of action in this 3rd book which develops her abilities and personality even more.

And I'm kinda hoping that Patryk and Natalya get beyond being just great drinking buddies, as I can see a bit of romance smoldering there.

I'm still not clear though on these Marks, and why a whole slew of priests, soldiers and anyone else that has one would die or go crazy if the person who gave them their mark passes away. It doesn't fit logically for me that any city would want such a thing. If the ruling official were to mark all of his soldiers and advisors per se, then killing the ruler is the quickest way of defeating him and the leaves the city essentially open to invasion. I can see how the author is using it as a means to keep Malach from killing Falke, which introduces a new twist to the story line once Malach finds his daughter, Rachel so I'll just have to mark it up as being within the author's "poetic license", so to speak.

And speaking of his daughter, Rachel, WOW ... that girl has some surprises in store for us regarding her powers! And I admit to being really curious what part (if any) Malach's other child is going to play! Without a doubt these Nightmarked books are filled to overflowing with plot twists & world building details, plus a full roster of bad ass characters!

I'm looking forward to the final book in this series,"City of Dawn", but having to wait until May of 2023 is going to seem like an eternity!

Note: You do have to start with the first book in the series, "City of Storms", as these aren't meant to be read out of order.

Having received an ARC I am submitting this review voluntarily.

How does a story keep getting better and better, book after book? I don’t know but Kat Ross sure does. Let’s find out what’s happening to our motley crew.

Read if you like: Urban fantasy, dark fantasy, paranormal, dystopian, interesting magical systems, false utopia, government plots, mystery, multiple POV, searching for truth, slow burn, world-building, and complex characters.

All of our characters have been through so much and the close of City of Wolves leaves us with many paths to follow. Where will the ley guide them? How will they find the way back to each other? Because their destines have been shown in the cards… and everyone is needed in the coming war.

Balaur is on the run, surely somewhere he can keep his chaos spreading through the ley. Malach and Nikola are both imprisoned with no chance of escape. A new revelation drove a wedge between Kasia and Alexei. Time might be running out for Misha well as the rest of the Curia as The Black Sun rises to overthrow the church and install Balaur and his twisted rhetoric across the land. And across the sea, the witches sense that a time of great change is drawing near, if only everyone can continue to play their parts.

This book never had a dull moment. There was so much going on in terms of character development, relationships, plots, and more plots. We get to see more of this beautiful world and the history between the nations. We follow all our favorite characters and we get a few new faces joining the main cast. I’m so very happy with all the personal arcs. Whew, there was a lot to work through. And just when I thought everything was getting wrapped up and couldn’t possibly imagine what book 4 would be about… BAM! The rug gets pulled from under you and a million little things add up to big new problems. And I literally CAN NOT WAIT to see what happens next. There are going to be some forced dynamics that will no doubt be absolutely delicious. Drama buffet for one, please!

I will be stalking the ARC sites for City of Dawn… I can’t say enough about this series.

A HUGE, enormous thank you to Kat Ross and Booksirens for a free copy of this book for review.

“Thwarted, the Dreamer skulked on. There were many others to visit this night.”

Kat Ross’s “City of Keys” is a dark fantasy masterpiece. The third offering in the Nightmarked series, it takes up the saga from where “City of Wolves” left readers mercilessly hanging. Ross has once again given her audience detail-rich settings, and a cast of characters that are easy to connect with and root for. This installment also comes with a ramped-up sense of urgency, making its nearly 700-page length go by in a blink.
As with the previous two books, the progression of the character arcs is convincing and organic. The development makes already well-established characters seem even more substantial. All the various subplot threads begin to really pull together, giving the story a weightier feel. Natural progression aside, it is anything but predictable.
The story opens with Malach seemingly adjusting to his new life in Dur-Athaara. Still determined to be reunited with Nikola and his children, he unwittingly sets into motion a chain of events that threatens to destroy everything. Making a play to flush out the Black Sun, Kasia defies the Pontifex and sets out on a dangerous path. Across the continent, Alexei is wrestling with his own concerns. When a horrifying attack on the Arx pulls them all back together, long-held grudges must be set aside, and uneasy alliances must be made. The unlikely group of heroes is forced to travel south in a bid to rescue their friends and stop an unhinged degenerate.
Filled with action, romance, and plot twists, “City of Keys” is an exciting read that is hard to put down.

I honestly cannot get enough of this series, they are so good and engaging!

The seamless way Ross weaves the different cultures, personalities, and customs together in these stories is beautiful, and I love how you can see the echos of our world, but with their own flavor.

I had a little gap between the previous book and this one, so it took me a little while to get fully reintegrated into the story. There are so many characters and plotlines to keep straight it can be a challenge.

This book kept me entranced through each twist and turn. Just when you think you have figured out what's going on, some new wrinkle arrives.

The thing I enjoyed most about this one, was seeing the gathering of the pontifex's and their different attitudes but how they were still all focused on the same goal (minus the evil ones). It was refreshing to see a group of leaders with differences in opinions and ideas of how a problem should be handled actually come to a compromise and take action. Several times when a character resigned themselves to giving up their preferred action or proposed solution in order to commit to the decision of the group as a whole I was like "HOW GROWN UP!!!"

Despite having our several relationships blossoming, maturing, and struggling, nothing gets better, and I'm so SAD for them. I just wanted SOMEONE to be happy, but alas, not to be. With massive plot development, conquering of enemies, and commitment to solving the root of the problem, our characters are just as adrift at the end as they were at the beginning, just in new ways. Its frustrating, but in a good way that makes you anxious for the next book.

City of Keys, the 3rd book of the Nightmarked series.... a standing ovation, please! Kat Ross continues to deliver, page after page. The plot twists in this book are both expected and unexpected. They could even be considered shocking! Don't be surprised if you find your jaw on the floor (more than once).

The journeys that took these characters in separate directions also allowed us readers to become even more intimate with them. Just when you think you may have an idea of who they are, you see another layer exposed. And as it is in the real world, sometimes what is revealed is dumbfounding! One thing is for sure, Kat Ross knows her character development. I think I've fallen in love with at least half of them. They are strong individually and a force to be reckoned with when they are brought together.

So many aspects of this story materialize in City of Keys and at the same time sets you right back up for "where is this headed?"! I always enjoy when a story takes you places you did not see coming and this series is notorious for being able to pull that off. Not to mention, pulling it off so very smoothly!

At the end of City of Keys, I was reeling with so many questions about what happens next! It's going to be difficult having to wait for book 4 to say the least. As I mentioned in the first review I gave Kat Ross, her writing reminds me of Cassandra Clare and I could see an entire universe built around the Nightmarked. There's so many wonderful characters and they are complex with incredible histories. I really hope that book 4 will not be the end of them!

I'm sorry to say this one didn't hit me the way the first two did.

One of the things that I think Kat Ross did so well in the first two books was the split between characters. There was just the right amount of time spent on one pov before we scooted over to another. There was enough time spent on one plot point before it was connected to another part of the story. The way the puzzle pieces of this story were constantly connecting is one of the greatest things about this series. I'm never bored, I'm constantly working through everything and trying to make connections between all of the characters and plots and people and magic and ugh. It's been so amazing.

Up until this book. This book was SO heavily focused on Malach. And I got it. It made sense why. But I struggled to get through the first 30%. I got bored of Malach. I got bored of watching his day to day life and his interactions with people and reading all his small talk. I was extremely not interested in reading about him potty training a kid.it was too much of him and crappy filler that I was really, reaaaaally missing Kasia and Alexei.

When the plot did proceed, it was amazing, as usual. I love the way all of the characters intersect by the end, and I loved the addition of the new characters.

I'm really excited to see where this story goes. It's a heavy series, there's no doubt about it, but I absolutely believe it's so incredibly close to perfect.

I just finished this book about 10 minutes ago. It’s by far the longest book in the series, which would normally be no problem but life has been getting in the way of my reading time so it took me quite awhile. I’m now lying in bed in the dark writing this while it’s fresh in my head before I fall asleep. If I didn’t have to work so early, I’d be cracking into book #4 right now, bedtime be damned.

I love how in book 2 people seemed driven apart and focused on their own factions’ priorities, but in this book they’re recognizing what’s at stake and how fate has brought them together. I still can’t get over how well written the characters are. I could see these books being made into a series on Netflix or Amazon. It would be like Game of Thrones and how everyone who hadn’t read the books was shocked at the Red Wedding, but those of us who read the series through had a feeling of odd satisfaction and amusement. Speaking of, STILL waiting for that last book 😡

Back to Kat Ross though. I seriously love her style. I want to read everything she’s ever written now and I want them all to have the pretty covers I’ve grown accustomed to with this series. I do think she should invest in a better editor to catch more grammatical errors, but they’re few and far in between mostly.

The ending was a perfect transition to the final book and I’m here for it.

I'm loving this series. While this one wasn't as action packed as book 2, it delved a lot deeper into the characters, specifically Malach who has been my favorite point of view character throughout the series. Needless to say, I loved that. Lezarius and Mikhail's stories were so much more complex, specifically Mikhail who had a lot more depth. To me, that made Alexei's character more relatable through their relationship.

Now, rarely is any book perfect, and this one did have a couple consistency errors that can be overlooked without the arc of the story being damaged. It did feel a shame that Nikola disappeared for a good third of the book. And that a couple minor plot points lacked the development that could have made them amazing. That said, I still believe it deserves a 5 ⭐ because at no point did I want to stop reading.

I'm looking forward to book 4!

The description opening is da bomb!
‘Lust is a siren . . .
Greed is a dragon . . .
But revenge is the most seductive mistress of all.’

I was dying inside as I read about Malach’s new “job”. OMG how absolutely BRILLIANT!!!

On a more serious note, two characters embark on some personal growth in this book. Kicking and screaming, perhaps, but grow nonetheless. Maybe even a level of maturity.

One of the more severe conversations held with one of them was regarding self-worth (or lack thereof). The author perfectly incorporated how Rejection Sensitivity Dysphoria starts and then adversely affects one’s life. This is something to watch for and prevent IRL.

If this is true, ‘All magic must be in harmony with nature’, then is it really magic?

Guess we’ll find out in ‘City of Dawn’!

What a great third volume !

This latest installment of the series will not let you catch your breath. The story begins with Malach emprisoned in the land of witches.

In the previous volume, I loved the introduction of the witches and the new magic. Volume three held the promise made in City of wolves. The witches and their magic were so different and the storyline developed there was great. I already liked Malach and Nikola but they shone particularly brightly in this volume.

Dare I say that they overshadowed Kasia and Alexei? I really thought so. Their adventures, the romance and the depth of feelings was much stronger with them.

If you have started this series, you won't be disappointed as a lot of adventures, twists and turns and new characters await you.

Kat Ross never fails to surprise. Basically, at no point in this series have I known where we were headed. All of the main characters are wildly compelling, even when I can't stand them or their decisions. I found so much satisfaction in all the different paths finally merging. Book three is the perfect culmination of the past two books and setting the stage for the final installment. I absolutely cannot wait to see how it all ends and who will be the victor. Be prepared for bloodshed, tenuous alliances, endless twists, and constant betrayal in The Nightmarked Series.

Marked/Unmarked. Cardinal/Pontifex/Mage. Ley/Magic. Knights/Witches. Markhounds. Nihilim/Human. This is my first read in this series. A real lesson in all these terms, but it is easy to understand and catch up on some of what has happened in Books 1 & 2. "City of Keys" is a captivating story with fast, edge of your seat action and excitement. Lots of surprises and treachery, but in this dark world, love still finds it's way into some of the characters. The book is simply difficult to put down.

Now I need to go back and read the first two books in this series so I will be totally ready for Book 4 when it comes out. I cannot wait!

City of Keys, the third installment of the series was in my opinion better than the last only cause so much gets answered and the world of the witches finally merges with that of the Curia. The villains from Book 2 are still present and more is revealed of what happened during the war and how each pontifex believed in. The Curia wants to forget its origins, that they were all mages at first and then there are the zealots and the nut cases like Jules. Kasia and company are good detectives and keep making alliances which will no doubt help them to rescue their missing comrades. A truly enjoyable read. Can’t wait for the next book!

This book kept me reading all night long. Epic and incredible and I couldn't put it down.

It did start with a slower beginning, the first half of the novel was mainly about character building and relationships… but as I am already in love with all these characters and can't wait to see what they get up to next, I hardly noticed.

That second half though, whoa! Action, battles, twists and turns, it's all I could do to keep up and not skip ahead to see how it ends.

I am eagerly awaiting book #4, and now will have to go back and re-read the first three again until 2023.

City of Keys is a “rock, paper, scissors” book of shifting alliances, outwitting others, and saving friends no matter the cost. Mages, Marked, witches, unmarked, Curia, and humans all converge in an urban setting. Magic and wit are distributed unevenly across the Kingdoms, and success or failure often depends on who can access their magic first and strongest.
This door stopper of a book races along a breakneck speed continuing the trials and tribulations of major characters on both sides of the conflict. Who is the villain when everything is just a matter of perspective?

This is gritty fantasy at its finest.

This book caught me by surprise- it is absolutely hands above the first two books in the series. I love it!

There are so many threads to keep track of, different people and customs to remember. There is amazing world building and mystery upon mystery. Malach surprised me, as did some other characters. I burning to read more and cannot wait to read the last book!

Thanks you, Kat Ross, for this unique gem of a book!

This is the 3rd book in this amazing series (and the longest), and it didn't disappoint. In fact, it wasn't long enough! Only because I enjoyed the story so much. All my favorite characters were back, and Malek is changing more and more for the better. I absolutely love his character arc. My only criticism is that the section about the creche went on longer than necessary. All in all, another wonderful installment of this series. Highly recommend. Another great book in the series by Kat Ross. This author has weaved the multiples threads of her storyline like the majestic braided rivers, whose paths cross and separate many times before reaching their destination. I will struggle to fill in the time before the last book in this series comes out. A fantastic journey you have taken me on.

I received a complimentary ARC copy in return for my honest and unbiased review.

This series has me totally hooked! I'm reading at every available opportunity, and can't wait to start the next one. The tale is unfolding brilliantly, and I'm getting to like all the characters more and more. This series reminds me a little of The Wheel of Time series by Robert Jordan in the way the individual stories unfold as each character grows and develops in the main plot. Simply unputdownable! My thanks to BookSirens for the opportunity to read it.

Part of me feels like this story goes around in circles. There is still so much unknown and apparently no way to know it.

The ending was not an ending but a giant neon arrow directing you to read the fourth book in the series. I don't like that. I can't decide if the story problem was resolved because things went in so many directions.

I have the boxed set so I will be reading the next book. Eventually.

**I received a free ARC from Book Sirens and am voluntarily leaving this honest review.**
This book started off with formerly minor characters. It kind of simmered on the backburner and then just all of a sudden boiled over into a high stakes, high adrenaline showdown. It was amazing. I highly recommend!

This series is compelling and keeps getting better. The magic system is nuanced and well-developed, and the setting keeps surprising me - in a good way - with its notes of modernity. It's fast-paced and twisty, but still totally character-driven. It's hard to get me to like anti-heroes, but Malach has become my favourite character, and his redemption arc is inspiring.
