My first Beta Read!!

I liked how this book felt different from the other Charmaine Pauls duology/trilogy books in the Diamond Magnate world I had read where the guy either kidnaps the girl or forces him to marry her and they play house for most of the novel. Leon is the brother of Cas, Damian, and Zoe, the other heroes/heroines of the other novels. Leon is a software engineer at Violet's stepfather's company. Violet wants to be an artist, but her stepfather forces her to work at his company. Since she's starting out, she's working the lowliest job: the cleaner. She wants to gain freedom from her stepfather, but Leon has other plans for her.

Leon Hart is the over-possessive, slightly controlling (???) hero. He sees Violet and is determined to make her his. Nothing, not even Violet, will stop him: "Whether she’ll want me or not, Violet Starley is mine."

Violet has a physical disability, which I found interesting, especially since most heroines are physically perfect. I liked how Leon still found her perfect despite this. He also spent a ton of money buying a comfortable bed/mattress and car for her.

The book ends on a slight cliffhanger that one could see coming, but it was still delicious. The ending brought a smile to my face (even though it's vengeful haha), and I can't wait for Book 2!

*Told in Violet's & Leon's 1st person POV, the steam borders to making this an erotica but not enough to overpower the plot

Not sure how dark of a romance this is, but it wasn't light either.

Wow.
This book was fabulous and even better since it broke my reading slump. I rarely give 5* but I enjoyed it so much I’m giving that extra half a star.

Leon is the Hart brother we know little about. He’s a brilliant software programmer working hard for a promotion. He’s spent 3 years working on the program that’s going to get him there. He’s also decided that Violet is going to be his. And that’s where he has his work cut out for him. Since Violet has other ideas.

I devoured this in two sittings and loved it but can we take a minute to talk about that ending?
No spoilers here don’t worry.
But seriously who would end a book like that?
Charmaine Paul’s that’s who. I bet her ears were burning because I had a few choice words to say about it.

I voluntarily read a review copy kindly provided by the author.

2.5-star **Sexual History SPOILERS are here.**

Meh characters and romance. Gross that H is only used to prostitutes so he kept leaving h wads of cash after their sex dealings--whether she’d refuse him or agree. But will give Book2 a chance.

Lacked emotional and romantic involvement that Dubious-Consent had in spades. No feels/no angst.

h’s limb disability was interesting. But her POV and character were too remote and neutral to make me feel sorry for her plight.

Pacing is average and not really a boring book but not gripping. After about 20%, I started skimming the book until the end to find out what H’s true intentions with h are.

But @ the end:
1.) H’s interest in h is still a mystery (aside from some physical attraction but even that's not clear).

2.) I’m not at all convinced that he’s in love with h nor that she’s that physically attractive to him to marry despite her stealing his valuable software creation to give to her evil stepbrother (who's blackmailing her with photos of her mother cheating with some other man who's not his father).

Only people who battle to run dream about flying.

This South African series features the disreputable Hart siblings and their romantic partners. Here, we get second-oldest brother Leon, a talented coder working for a company that sells illegal software. Hoping to make partner, he falls for the boss' stepdaughter, but Violet is hiding a terrible secret. Faced with an impossible choice, will her actions destroy their relationship before its barely begun? Note: This duology ends on a cliffhanger; the second volume releases in June. In addition, though the MC meet for the first time here, Leon, his family, and certain lines of action appeared in earlier books. I haven't read those and followed this well enough.

Before I get to my review, I'm going to rant about the hopelessly vague "dark." In their zeal to gain readers, almost every author throws what I guess is the popular "dark" into the title or blurb and calls it a day. Because, you see, "dark" means everything: every generic plot element, character type, and trigger warning are contained in "dark." Never mind that "dark" is actually not monolithic: it's portrayed very differently from book to book and consumed very differently by reader to reader. So, for some this will be too "dark;" for others, not nearly "dark" enough. Because Leon never harms Violet, I actually don't consider this "dark." For me, this was a relief, since I'm actually not a fan of books that ask us to believe that a man who beats a woman half to death is who she'll live happily ever after with, but that's me. Based on the cliffhanger, however, it's possible that the second volume will be "dark;" we'll see.

Okay, rant over. This is my first book by this author: I liked it and look forward to reading the next. I do have some caveats, but I'll begin with the positives -- the most important of which is the couple. Both are intelligent and complex, with detailed backstories and clear motivations. It's never explained why Leon is so attracted to and possessive of Violet, but I chalk that up to generic convention. While I do have some problems with Leon's attitude (see below), I particularly appreciated his efforts to accommodate her disability and his genuine interest in her as a person. I also liked Violet (and I loved the descriptions of her art): caught between a rock and a hard place, she evinces a touching combination of strength and vulnerability. Finally, the conflict between the couple is high-stakes, organic, and seemingly insurmountable since the actions that Violet must take to .

I did, however, have three problems with the book. First, some of the prose is odd; I'm not sure how much of this is South African English because to my American ears the prepositional phrases are ungrammatical ("bored of," "messed on," "suffers with") and the vocabulary inconsistent (the South African "rand" and the American "panties" -- I do realize that authors fetishize that word). Second, the combination of white characters, diamonds, "high crime areas," gated communities, and South Africa makes me nervous. Finally, I've always found it ludicrous that the men in these books who force women into relationships they don't want are shocked, shocked when the women are unhappy and/or do anything to escape. Leon is , but, gee, dude, what did you expect? You railroaded her every step of the way; she clearly said that she envisioned a different future for herself; and you're so clueless about what her home life is really like that you've missed what should be staring you in the face. I find it laughable (and tired and frustrating and old) when the MMC blames the MFC for very reasonably not liking or trusting someone who takes all her choices away. Leon never cared about how important autonomy -- something she's never had -- was to Violet; thus, at no point, ever, did she owe him anything; and only a fantasist would think that she did.

4 stars. I was invested, which is more than I've been in a while (the pandemic has taken a toll on my concentration). I really hope Leon is less rigid in the next book because as it stands now, it's impossible to believe that anyone claiming to love someone could be so indifferent to what they really want.

Gah! That ending! The first book from Charmaine Pauls series is always a love/hate relationship for me. I love them so much that I hate those darn cliffhanger endings. I always want to read the 2nd book immediately, which says a lot about this authors books.

Violet is a heroine who doesn't have many choices in her life. She is fighting to change that, however Leon is about to ruin all her hard work. If only Violet knew that a life with Leon would not be a life like her mother lives.

I'm so curious how Leon is going to handle the information he got at the end of this book. Violet has him obsessed and I know he will still claim her but that claiming is going to change. I'm also hoping he does some major damage to that smug Elliot and Gus. I'm feeling vengeful on Violet's behalf.

I really can't wait to get my hands on book 2. I need to know how this is all going to play out.

Do you remember,Leon Hart? The tech brother of Ian,Damian and Zoe Hart?
From the Diamond Magnate world?
He did things a little different from his siblings….he’s got a job with Gus Starley’s company, programming apps with a little….extra.
He finally gets his story, and i’m the lucky girl that got the ARC!!

Violet has been stuck in a bad situation from when she was little, and her mother was forced to marry Gus.
She really had to,if she wanted Violet to have the operations she needed for the congenital limb length discrepancy or LLD for short, due to fibular hemimelia, which meant she was born without a shinbone.
Violet had been through a lot to get where she was now,and she was very grateful for the sacrifices her mother made, but…
She hated her stepfather, loathed her stepbrother Elliot, and only wanted one thing.
Get away, with her mother,as far as possible from Gus,and the life he forced them to live.
He forced her to work for him, starting at the bottom, and refused to allow her to do what she wanted most, becoming the artist she knew she could be.
And then it got even worse….

Leon had plans, big ones, and he was well on his way to achieve them.
He’d started working for Gus with the intention of taking over the company, and the program he’d been working on for 3 years was the ticket to doing that.
Ever since he saw Violet for the first time,he’d known she was special, and she would be the cherry on top of his plans….
Because he knew she was his,and he was going to marry her.
Gus had already told him he’d make him partner when he gave him his program, and when Leon made his intentions clear about Violet,Gus was more than happy to add her to the deal.

Showing Violet how well they fit together, and making her agree, was a challenge.
All she did was shut him down….apart from the times he made her body sing.
But Leon was convinced he could change her mind, and make her happy.
Until he found out what she did……
Not knowing why….and her reasons wére good, even if the deed wasn’t….his plans change.

Leaving me with a killer cliffhanger!!!!
How the hell will i remain sane until Imperfect Affections arrives???

Leon Hart is used to being solitary. The middle one of the Hart brothers, he was too old to play with Damian and Zoe and too young to hang out with Ian and his friends. When their tormented and abusive childhood finally became too much, Ian took Leon on the lam, and together they lived life on the outskirts of the law. Until Ian fell in love.

Those are the two words that describe him best. Quiet. Intense.

Now, Leon is on his own, doing what he does best, programming. Except, his programs have an underground element which endears him to criminal masterminds like his new boss, Gus Starley. Leon has decided that Gus’ stepdaughter, Violet, is his perfect soulmate. She doesn’t know it yet, but Leon is going to marry her. And Leon never fails at getting what he wants.

“I never ask twice.”

Charmaine Pauls crafts a complex, sultry, thoughtful dark romance where the heroine comes from tragedy and the hero is alpha and domineering all the way. Violet Starley is already dealing with so much: congenital disability, controlling stepfather, vindictive stepbrother, and vulnerable mother, when Leon Hart swoops in with his ultimatums declaring his rights and ownership over her.

Only people who battle to run dream about flying.

Violets are the hardiest flowers on earth, and Violet is determined to weather each and every adversity thrown her way, but can she resist the chemistry sizzling between her and Leon? The question won’t be the least bit straightforward when her lying, blackmailing stepbrother shows his true colours! Violet won over my heart with astounding speed and Leon may well be the most overbearing of the Hart brothers. Imperfect Intentions is the first part of a duet and ends on yet another of Charmaine’s famous cliffhangers. Thrilling and powerful!

Oh my goodness Charmaine, the start of Leon Hart and Violet's was spectacular and so much better than I could ever have imagined.
Leon is your typical bad boy, and he has set his eyes on Violet, he watches her as she limps around the office, cleaning and struggling. But he has also been selected by Gus, Violet's stepfather, to be a partner in the business and with Violet. And of course, Violet with her strength and determination, balks and struggles with the promise of her to marry Leon.
This couple tries to cope with the outside forces that make their relationship harder than it should be, and Violet has a secret that she hopes Leon never finds out.
Charmaine, as always, has written a story of love and connection, of right and wrong, and the consequences of our actions. She melds these ideas and morals into her eloquent words, leaving the reader craving more and more.

This book with its shadow of darkness and characters that immediately pulled me in was utterly enthralling. I loved every moment of the antagonism, angst, and high octane chemistry.

Violet’s tragic background was so believable I felt myself connecting with a heroine in a way I have never done so before. I truly understood her, her motivations, and her reasonings. For lack of a better word, this connection was exhilarating and I found myself clinging to every move she made, every emotion she experienced.

Leon has a diverse background himself, although I was familiar with his past to some degree. However, the further he went with Violet, the more intense he became and I was a total goner. He’s the type of hero that’s a bit stalkerish, walks on the dark side while not diving in deep unless it’s required, and lives by his own rules when society’s rules don’t give him what he wants. He’s an over the top, in the most perfect way, hero that claims his woman in every way and protects her at any cost.

This is a fast paced read, a bit on the short side, but holy heck, it is full of intrigue, drama, angst and a nuclear passion that exploded across the pages. It ends in a cliffhanger that left me screeching and now anticipating what darkness Leon is going to step into.

I read this book as an ARC but I find it quite difficult to review as it's a duet, so as the story isn't complete it spoils me enjoyment not being able to read it as a full book/series.

The Hero has decided he wants her.
She has a messed up family dynamic so is not interested in him but melts at his touch, sigh....

He previously has paid women, as he moved around so much for work.
There are no intimate scenes other than the Hero and heroine but it is mentioned a few times that he's been with others, seen his fair share of **** etc.

No relationship info for her but she has been involved with others.

I got tbh I thought the whole situation the heroine was in was because she felt indebted to her mother but then her mothers stupid actions were trapping her.
I just had little sympathy with the mother and it might seem heartless but I wanted the heroine to walk away and leave her to it.

Cliffhanger ending.

Charmaine created the Hart Family and they keep entertaining us readers with their adventurous and dangerous exploits book and book again. We met Ian & Damian in earlier books Diamonds in the Dust Stolen Lust
This book is Leon's story, the middle child.

"Leon Hart. He’s different than the other men who work for my stepfather.
He’s not a brain or a muscle. He’s both.
And more. "

description

He's equally dangerous and recklessly maverick as his brothers. A skilled programmer, his ambitions to ultimately partner with his mentor Gus Starley are at the forefront of his professional life.
Lusting after his stepdaughter Violet are the added bonus.
She's brusque, he's relentless Their intense chemistry sets the pages on fire.

description

“Do you ever go with the flow, Leon Hart?”
“I make the flow.”

I had admirable generosity for Violet. Her entrapment hurt me too. A bird with clipped wings, I felt so bad for her, kept wishing for her freedom from all men.
That's why I was able to forgive & understand her hard rough personality

description

“What made you so hard, Violet Starley? Will it be so bad to show your softer side for once?”

description

The story has too many twists and turns to keep you invested in turning pages.
I, myself read this book non stop till 1 am and stopped only when I closed the last page.
As usual Charmaine pulls no stops in chasing thrills and weaving espionage webs to keep the excitement and dread at the peak level throughout.
It's always makes for a delightful experience to read Charmaine's romance thrillers.
Also Books are based in Johannesburg and it feels like going back home.

Imperfect Intentions is book one of the Beauty in Imperfection duet where the middle Hart brother finally gets his story. This book has somewhat of a different dynamic than the other Diamond Magnate world novels in that Violet isn't being held by Leon against her will, though the relationship isn't exactly voluntary on her end. Leon is trying to become partner at Gus Starley's company and, it appears, marriage to his daughter might come as one of the perks. Leon's obsession with Violet has little to do with the job and everything to do with the woman herself. Violet is a different heroine. She has a physical disability and I believe that Charmaine Pauls did a great job with the researched and thoughtful representation of that. I liked Violet's strength in light of her circumstances. However, those same circumstances made her very resistant to Leon's attention. I adore Leon. He has that dangerous vibe hiding under the guise of civility and is willing to do whatever it takes to get his way, personally and professionally. The chemistry between these two is pretty hot and they appear well suited to fulfill each other's needs. I'd like more clarity on Violet's relationship history as, while she appears somewhat experienced, she is also unprepared for Leon and her body's reaction to his brand of dominance. This book ends on a not unexpected cliffy, but book two is coming soon after.

Charmaine Pauls expands the Diamond Magnate world by finally shining a light on Leon Hart, the second oldest brother in the Hart family. With Damian, Zoe, and Ian already living their happily ever afters, Leon is ready to settle down and find the one. Leon certainly excels at being mysterious, controlling, confident, knowing exactly who he wants—and he has set his eyes on obtaining Violet Starley. I had been waiting for Leon's book ever since he dropped that tiny revelation about wanting a pair of diamond earrings from Damian in Stolen Love. It's safe to say that it had been for Violet all along. I loved finding all these details that make the story's world much more memorable, engaging, and enriching. This small taste of Leon's desires, ambitions, and ultimately his motivation for revenge has me excited for the conclusion to his story. The book does end with a nail-biting cliffhanger but thankfully, the conclusion to Leon and Violet's story in Imperfect Affections will be released in June.

"I want her with a desire that consumes me. She cursed me with an obsession for which there's no cure."

As the foil to Leon's character, Violet is extremely independent, feisty, sassy, naive, and has a guilt complex. Due to her disability, Violet has led a life that is not her own because of her mother's sacrifice while being under the watchful eye of her controlling step-father's household. As a result, she yearns to escape and rescue her mother from their predicament. Violet was a difficult heroine to understand and it took some time for me to warm up to her because she was constantly on the defensive and abrasive to Leon who simply wanted to take care of her. While I understood her situation, I was also frustrated because she fell into her scheming step-brother's trap so easily. I wanted to shake her because she was being blackmailed for her mother's transgressions. Nevertheless, I do look forward to knowing more about her—especially because Leon now knows what she did. There are consequences to her actions and I can't wait to see what Leon has in store for her.

"I want her for the fire that burns inside her. I want her for me. I want to tie her to me so that no one else can touch her."

In the end, I devoured this book because Leon truly was a fascinating character with many facets to him as he was sweet but also domineering. We also got a sneak peak of Leon and Violet's sexual chemistry together and it was intoxicating, steamy, and addicting. Charmaine Pauls has always excelled at the push and pull between her characters and I am so looking forward to the angst and heartbreak between these two. Leon has always been an enigma to me and I was never able to figure him out while reading Ian and Cas' book. We're finally given glimpses behind that mask behind Leon Hart and am pleased to say that there is a certain darkness and intrigue to his character that is very different from his brothers. I highly recommend this book to those who like the love/lust at first sight and revenge tropes with a hero who is madly obsessed with his spitfire heroine and will do everything to make her his.

Dark romance done right

I love reading dark romances, something about seeing taboo relationships on paper satisfies a craving I can’t (or won’t) indulge in in real life. That being said, it is really difficult to find what I consider good dark romances. That might be because I have very specific notions of what makes good dark romance and also, what doesn’t. But before I go into more detail, here comes the obligatory trigger warning, for all the pearl clutchers out there: this book contains dub-con, spanking and power exchange, forced marriage – or at least forced engagement (and domestic abuse, though not between the hero and heroine).

I hate heroes that are prone to sudden outbursts of violence, that are inconsistent in their actions, that treat their employees with indifference, that are hot-headed and quick to anger. And above all, I hate bullies, because all these traits to me always imply weakness, because a person who is not in command of themselves and needs to pick on those weaker than themselves is anything but strong. And such a MMC, paired frequently with a doormat heroine that is naïve, wide-eyed, a virgin and oftentimes behaves in a way to put herself in danger and also lets the MMC walk all over her, is just the worst, but more than half the books labelled as dark romance work exactly along these lines, and I can’t stand them. I’m an eclectic reader and also like sweet romances, but if you promise darkness in your tag line/synopsis, you better deliver.

Luckily, both MCs in this story are just about the opposite of what I described above. Imperfect Intentions is the first book in the Beauty in Imperfection duology and the fourth story cycle in the Diamond Magnate series. It features Leon Hart, the second oldest of the Hart siblings and the last to get his own story. Now that his older brother Ian has gone sort of respectable, Leon tries to get a foothold as brilliant coder in Johannesburg’s underground business world, working for Gus Starley’s software company. That’s were Violet crosses his path, as she is cleaning her stepfather’s office space, for lack of other job opportunities, despite having an art degree. Observing her day in, day out, Leon arrives at the conviction that she is the one for him. Violet is anything but indifferent to him, but she has made other plans for her life and Leon’s forceful and not-taking-no-for-an-answer-approach to courtship threatens to derail all her plans and dreams. And then unforeseen complications force Violet to betray Leon in order to save her mother…

I also liked how Violet’s disability was not only a token to diversity, but an important part of her background and integral to the plot development.

What I absolutely loved was the dynamic between Leon and Violet. Leon is dangerous and determined, and once he sets his mind on getting Violet, he pursues her with a single-minded focus. He is not above man-handling her on occasion, although he is always mindful and solicitous of her impairment. Violet is strong-willed and feisty, and so their battles are less about who has the upper hand physically (though Leon is not shy about his greater physical strength), the real battles take place on the psychological plane and are about who of them has the stronger will. And although the power dynamic seems to favor Leon (mostly because of the difficult situation Violet finds herself in in her family), it’s not really that clear.
When Leon finally finds out about Violets betrayal, he supresses his deep emotional hurt and goes cold, all the more determined to get Violet under his power, whatever it takes. I can’t wait to find out how their tumultuous relationship plays out in the second part of the story.

This isn’t the first time I’m saying this in a review of a Charmaine story but LISTEN, don’t read any reviews LOL I myself thought about not writing a review but I’m pretty good about giving you a sense of a story without telling you a thing about the story. It’s my superpower :) The reason I always say the don’t read reviews thing about Charmaine is because GAH, EVERY SINGLE DETAIL IS IMPORTANT and should be experienced with a blank state of mind and too many times, reviewers give stuff away (sometimes without even thinking they are) and it makes me batty! *sigh* so yeah, it’s been like two weeks of me going back and forth in my mind on whether to review and then I realized I’m a blogger (lol) and I have to because, ARC lol *cue duh moment*

The Diamond Magnate Collection or what I would refer to as a world is thus far, all about the Hart siblings. Their stories begin with Damien Hart then move to Zoe Hart then to Ian Hart and now to Leon Hart. They’re not all in each other’s stories, but I think it’s important to read them all and start from the beginning if you’re going to truly understand not just them (the Harts), but also this world that Charmaine has created.

If you’re a super fan like myself of Charmaine’s words, then you’re used to her stories going down very dark and twisted paths. She tends to write about the dark and shadowy side of life she does it well. This story deviates a bit from that. It’s not a romantic comedy lol but it’s lighter than her usual, which could all be a ruse to give her readers a false sense of security before she goes all crazy on us. I mean the end was gasp worthy for sure! It’s not that I didn’t see it coming it’s just that I was so enthralled in the story that when it came, I was like whaaaaaaaaaat?! There’s no more words?! *cries*, so it took me by surprise LOL

This is the beginning of what I feel is going to be a beautiful story with a few twists still to come. Violet and Leon are perfectly matched and Leon is already moving all kinds of mountains for Violet and it is just tender and beautiful. It’s slow moving at the start but picks up towards the end with a vengeance which makes me twitchy that I have to wait so long for their continued journey but Charmaine always makes the wait worthwhile! #trustandbelieve :)

I liked this one-

I really like CP's writing style and liked the characters. There were some nice scenes, and I thought that the book set a nice basis for the next one. The only reason I didn't rate it higher was that I wanted more from the characters?

This was a very quick, fast-paced read which I enjoyed, but I would've loved to have seen more in-depth/ lengthy interactions between Violet and Leon. A lot of their scenes felt very surface level- but I'm looking forward to seeing them develop.

But anyways I'm excited to read the next book, and see where this goes.

It was also super cute to hear abt a pregnant Zoe- it felt like a very full circle moment from previous books 😭.

I completed this book in one sitting. I don't do it unless I'm hooked!

To be honest, I'm not a huge fan of DARK romance. I found Dubious enticing but disturbing at the same time; it took some time for me to get through it. Some of those scenes were so vivid. I felt as though I was there, and that is the gift that is Charmaine Pauls.

She paints a picture and makes you feel that you are in the room experiencing what is happening first-hand. It takes a special kind of author to transport you like that.

I received this book as a BETA read, and I was hooked! This is more darkish romance, but it has steamy/sexy/spicy intrigue elements. It's so tastefully done that I wanted to be Violet with how Leon treated her. Yes, even the...... nope, I'm not giving that away; you'll have to read it to know which part I'm talking about.

Is he possessive? Yes
Does he know what he wants? Yes
Is he willing to do it at all costs? Hell Yes

There is a sensitive side to his character that makes you want to take him in your arms and tell him everything will be okay.

Leon and Violet's story touched me. It was hot, sensual, and sexy without being over the top. I loved the storyline. One of my favourite reads in such a long time - and being set in Johannesburg, my home town, I love it even more.

I cannot wait to find out what happens next!

Thank you, Charmaine, for such a deliciously tantalising story that kept me turning the pages until I devoured the entire book.

Charmaine Pauls delivers yet another enticing entry into the Diamond Magnate world with this start to a duet featuring enigmatic middle brother Leon, resident tech genius and now our anti-hero. Imperfect Intentions is a delectable beginning to a fiery and complicated romance duet that has lots of dark promise.

This story had a decidedly different vibe than the others in the series as far as our narrative story- gone are the car chases, stealthy missions, edgy violence and near death escapes, instead we have a deceivingly placid big technology corporate workplace story. Leon is now working as a programmer, hoping to design the next big app in order to gain a much coveted promotion to partner of the company. Instead of a Hart brother being a criminal on the run like we’ve seen of late, we now have an ambitious and hard-working Hart brother playing more on the “legitimate” side of business. At least on the surface…. But his stoic resolve is soon challenged by his desire for the enchanting Violet Starley, the step-daughter of his boss. Something in her calls to him, and in his haste to respect his boss and keep his intentions legitimate, he finds himself more than just wooing the deceivingly gentle Violet- she’s, in fact, all teeth and fire.

While Leon is perhaps a bit more on the “up and up” as his brothers, he still has that magnetic Hart charisma. He’s enigmatic, self-assured, assertive, calculating and controlling. Like the Harts we’ve met, when he wants something, he’ll move mountains to get it. He’s devoted years to this promotion, and now he’s setting his sights on Violet, and once he does we have all that caveman possession and gentle manipulation we love about a Charmaine hero. He’s somehow both swoony and domineering- quite a magnetic combination. Truthfully, he’s the easiest Hart to love (there were times when I wanted to yell at Violet to just go with it- he’s that damn charming). His desire certainly rings of insta-love/lust, but Charmaine evolves their connection as his admiration of Violet becomes more substantial. He’s got lot of layers to him, this mysterious Leon Hart, and I can’t wait to uncover more.

Violet certainly gives him a run for his money. When we first meet her, we see a heroine beat down and sheltered. As the result of her disability, she had a challenging childhood, and she’s saddled with the twin weights of the guilt she carries over the sacrifices her mother made to secure her future and her burning desire to escape her family and live a life of her choosing. But her moments of fragile physical presence have nothing on the ferocity of her character. She’s capable, desperately independent, steely and at times downright sassy. While she is a character I admire for all she’s navigated- she’s truly trapped in a den of wolves and complicit sheep- I did struggle with her at times. Leon is a bit tame and incredibly charming- I found her repulsion of him to feel a bit unwarranted at first, though I understood the story she created about him, false as it may be. He’s whole heartedly dreamy towards her- even though again I understand how she sees herself transition from one prison to another. And I felt disappointed at how easily she fell prey to the machinations of our “villain”- for the fortitude we saw in her, I wanted more. Though again this is about her baggage- and her own guilt for once overshadowed her independence and drive.

As far as chemistry and story goes, this one felt like a lot of exposition. Just when things felt like they were just picking up, this careened to a cliffhanger that will set up our conclusion, which given the foreshadowing we’ve seen will most certainly take on more of the dark, alphahole Hart flair we’ve seen before. I’m craving for the chemistry to complexify a bit- the pattern of her complete and utter rejection of him and her obstinance and his smooth denial of her feelings started to feel a bit cyclical in the end. The catalyst at the end will certainly open up a new wave of emotional notes for them both that I hope will introduce new interesting elements to their interactions. The heat and attraction is there- we just didn’t quite get the reward of it just yet. A lot of angst and pushing, not quite as much pulling as I wanted. But, such is the nature of a duet- but this one definitely had a bit less sizzle than I’m used to from Pauls. The intensity is there, so I’m excited to see how this build up explodes.

The ending and subsequent cliffhanger were expected and predictable from the start, but it didn’t make it any less impactful. We’ve seen a small glimmer of the depth of Leon’s tenacity and darkness, and now that revenge has entered the equation, I imagine this will be a full blown catalyst for a very interesting character arc. I’m curious how Violet will weather the storm- but the violet is the most formidable of flowers apparently, so let’s hope she continues to blossom amidst the pending Hart wrath. I certainly consumed this story hungrily- it’s fast paced and a great one-sit binge. I can’t wait for it to deepen in Imperfect Affections out in June. And those affections I have a feeling will be OH SO DELICIOUS!

This book, the first in Leon and Violet's duet, reads really fast (took me about 2.5 hours) and moves at a quick pace, but I didn't feel like I was missing anything either. Violet (and her mother) are trapped in an untenable situation with her criminal stepfather and spineless stepbrother. Along comes Leon Hart (Damian and Ian's brother), who decides Violet will be his, no matter what. Of course I love the possessive, uber protective and alpha Leon and though he (and I) tried to tell Violet he would treat her like a queen, and take care of all her problems including the gross steps, but of course she doesn't see it yet. I enjoyed their push and pull but I personally always struggle with dread when reading stories with the main character under a villain's thumb and after having a run of that kind of plot lately, being frustrated for Violet's situation in this one was extra anxiety-inducing for me. Violet is a strong and stubborn heroine, and I like all of the different aspects of her character. I am VERY much looking forward to what happens next between her and Leon after the end of this one, and am glad the second book is coming so soon.

I must say that Leon Hart definitely has my attention now.  While we were introduced to him as a child in the Diamonds Are Forever Trilogy and as an adult with a very dark and dangerous side in the Beauty In The Stolen Trilogy, we now see Leon Hart on his own. He’s extremely intelligent, driven, determined, and not to be trifled with.

Leon Hart has been silently observing Violet Starley for a bit now. Both work for a man that potentially holds their future hostage.  While Leon has earned his position, Violet is just beginning. She may be the owner’s family but she doesn’t get a pass.  When an opportunity presents itself, Leon asserts how things are going to be between them.  Leon is forthright and honest with Violet.  His primary objective is to claim, protect, and provide. Unfortunately, Violet doesn’t believe or accept his declarations. And honesty doesn’t play a part in her story.

Violet is secretly fighting for her very existence. She’s indebted to her family. It’s not easy to be a Starley. And trust in men is almost nonexistent. While Leon gives her what she truly wants, and she feels the attraction, she refuses to trust or give in to him.  But when her hand is forced, she makes a decision that turns the table for everyone.  Neither she nor Leon are prepared for what is to come.

Looking forward to the conclusion of this story.

Finally Leon’s story is here! Let me just tell you it did NOT disappoint. Leon is the middle of the Hart brothers. They each have their own stories if you haven’t read them I suggest you do asap because your missing out. Leon is independent, earns his way and has set his sights on Violet. He is a computer programmer and Violet is the stepdaughter of his boss Gus ( whom I’m not overly fond of) and I actually really liked the fact that Violet had a physical disability. It added strength to her character and she did not use it to her advantage. She and her stepbrother Elliot both work at her dads company and have to earn everything. Violet has caught Leon’s eye and he must make her his. She resists him at every turn, I felt it a little unfair she didn’t even give Leon a chance by actually listening to him but she was so set in her way and her plan to get her and her mother out of the life they were living. Now Violet is being blackmailed, and she must do it in order to save her mother. I can’t help but feel like If Violet would have just went to Leon in the first place things might have gone very differently. But alas where is the drama that? That cliffhanger though aaahh. I need to know what happens next like now! Thank you Charmaine for another page turner that I could not put down and I look forward to next book!

Violet Starley and Leon Hart.

Leon works for a well known IT company. He’s a genius. He’s a breath away from being promoted to being a partner in the company but more excitingly, a promise to marry the bosses daughter, Violet.

“From the moment I saw her, I wanted her like I’ve never wanted a woman. I want her with a desire that consumes me. She cursed me with an obsession for which there’s no cure, and it’s not only sexual. For the first time in my life, I want a woman for something other than sex. I want her for who she is. I want her for the fire that burns inside her. I want her for me. I want to tie her to me so that no one else can touch her.”

Violet is not amused. The last thing she’s thinking of is marriage when she’s under the hellish home of her stepfather and stepbrother. Her mom gets herself in a … situation and it’s up to Violet to keep her mothers reputation innocent. Or both their lives are in jeopardy.

Using lies, manipulation, and stealing to save a loved ones ass, Violet has to choose between her moms life or destroying her soon to be husbands future in the family business.

🔥🔥🔥🔥
I love this story. The banter between Leon and Violet is hilarious.
The secrets and miscommunication that are getting farther from the truth makes for one hell of a story.
The kink that comes out to play is top notch! 🥵

I love this book!
I can’t say is dark, but is intense.
The characters are wonderful outlined - and made you fall for them.
Leon seem a little dark, quiet and intense. His tenderness for Violet soften my heart.
And Violet is his obsesion. I fall for her and my heart broke for her.
I love the description of her name: Violets are the hardiest flowers on earth.
And she seem to be like this - she withstand all storms in her life.
I like their interactions and was sad for Violet forced to betrail him.
It was unfair for both of them!
But I’ll wait for their hapiness.

I received an Beta copy and I leave my honest voluntary review.

I throughly loved reading the amazing, engaging, and mesmerizing story of Leon Hart, the handsome, intelligent, and domineering computer whiz, and brothers with Damian, Ian, and Zoe. Leon wants to become a partner with his boss, Gus, and looks forward to sharing the program he has finally completed, and at the same time, he has his sights on the boss's daughter, Violet, who wants nothing to do with him. When photos are taken of Violet's mom in a compromising way, Violet has to go against her morals and do something for her low-life brother, Elliot. The chemistry between Leon and Violet is all consuming, passionate, and explosive. Can't wait to read the next book in the series!

Leon and Violets story starts with intense observation of Violet, prompted by Leon's pre-established interest in her. I would have liked to have read the beginnings of how that came to be, however through the novel this is established and described well enough to keep me satisfied and invested. The novel is fast paced, and I really felt like I was experiencing the characters anguish and intense feelings. I was transported into their worlds and I could see it all playing out in my mind as I was reading. The novel ends on a cliffhanger, and I cannot wait to see what happens next!

To be honest this book didn’t show Leon how I thought in my head that we would see him. As I reflected he is more like the first two books in Ian’s story rather than the playful younger brother in Ian’s final book.
Saying that I was not disappointed as it would appear the apple didn’t fall far from the tree and each brother appears to have a possessive nature for their women - potentially irrational but they do love hard.
Violet is a strong character drowning in circumstance and this impacts on her view of the world but gives her a fight that is admirable and you know she will be an exciting character to read about.
I still feel the playful side of Leon will appear but not in this book.
Whilst mentioning the other books this could also be read as a stand alone.
Great characters, the scenery and danger of the setting pop in and out of your mind as you read.
A real page turner and I can’t wait for the next instalment.

Oh be still my heart for that cliffy ending!
Omg i love you Charmaine, but dangit you! But how could you with that backstabbing hurt so much ending!

I have no words that won't lead to spoiler for the hurt i feel for Leon is just too raw atm.
I love Violet. I really do understand her reasons. I really do stand by her side with her bitterness toward life and men and the word love. But to be blind with her own bitterness that lead to sacrifice other? Oh girl, you are waaay over your head with Leon.

İ'm just gonna shut it now before i blab and give you spoiler.
Love the first book for Leon and Violet! Excited for what will happen next to them!

Billed as a dark romance, this one felt less dark than some of the other Hart stories - especially Zoe and Damian’s. Violet and Leon are matched for each other but only he sees the potential in this first half. I really wish this was written as just one book…it felt too short and incomplete as part 1. Nevertheless, I like both Leon and Violet and how this book wasn’t dominated by sex scenes that serve no purpose. Excited to see how the story wraps up when part 2 releases.
