Publier Saint-Pol-Roux en "Poésie/Gallimard" vient enfin combler une lacune criante dans la représentation de la poésie française où il occupe une place singulière, mais décisive. On se souviendra qu'il a fondé la revue La Pléiade (ab 1886) dont sera issu Le Mercure de France (ab 1889), que Mallarmé l'appelait son "fils", qu'en 1925 les surréalistes lui offrirent un banquet à la Closerie des Lilas et lui rendirent hommage dans les Nouvelles Littéraires, qu'il écrivit des pièces de théâtre, des livrets d'opéra, tout en s'ouvrant avec curiosité aux multiples manifestations de la modernité (survol en avion de la rade de Brest, en 1913) auxquelles il fera écho dans ses poèmes.

I'm working on his quite deep, spiritual and majestic poetry... translating with help his very Baroque/Surreal poems... he was known as Le Magnifique, and it is in his work and his deep intention. A virtual unknown to the English poetry reading world, and much neglected among the French.
