Monstrous Matches #1.5

Found by the Lake Monster

Rate this book
A lake monster in heat, a lost human in the woods, and the lie that gets her stuffed…

Getting lost in the woods was not the adventure Amy had in mind when she jumped at the chance to search for the local lake monster. She just wanted to liven up her steady but boring life, not wonder if every shadow on the ground is a snake and worry that no one will ever find her.

Luckily, someone does find her.
Unexpectedly, that person isn't human.
Wildly, he seems to think that she's his date.

Adrian faces what could be his last heat. As his temperature rises and his biological clock ticks, his only hope is that the witch being sent by a famous matchmaker will be as compatible as he dreams.

Can he convince his date to not only provide relief during his heat but also carry his eggs?

Found by the Lake Monster takes place in the same world as Stalked by the Kraken and includes breeding, knotting, and oviposition.

So I've been a little quiet on here because I've been reading a lot of Greek Mythology (woo look at me, I'm a scholar) and not sure anyone cares about that. But I broke and read this last night.

MONSTER. ROMANCE. PERFECTION.

Like seriously, get your ass over to Amazon and read this. It is cute. It is sexy. It is instalove. It has a monster in heat. It has weird dick. It was GREAT and I am going to re-read it again tonight, that is how much I enjoyed it.

Please do yourself a favor and pick it up. It really was beyond excellent...and now I have a thing for lake monsters. So there's that. :)

I have so much fun with this book. It's surprisingly self-aware and freaking hilarious sometimes.

Any book that made me cackle at 3 in the morning deserves a high rating, in my opinion.

Honestly, the only reason why I picked this one up is because of the word 'oviposition' in the blurb. What is it and how does it work in this context?

Well, let's just say I kinda want more of this oviposition thing in monster romance. That and having the heroes in heat. These two can stay.

Found by the Lake Monster is the latest addition to Lillian Lark’s Love Bathhouse Monster Romance series and I am utterly obsessed! Not only is the cover fantastic (and designed by the author!) but the romance in this was just everything. I’ve loved every book in this series but this might just be my absolute fav yet! Please note, this read includes breeding, oviposition (eggs), knotting, and fertility discussions.

Amy is an accountant currently lost in the woods when she happens across Adrian. Amy joined a few of her clients while they were out hunting for a lake monster; the group are supernatural seekers and invited Amy along on their adventure in exchange for payment for her doing their taxes. Adrian is said lake monster (really a type of water sprite or nix) and is currently in his last heat, a literal ticking of his biological clock warning him of his last chance at having young. Driven by that alarming fact, Adrian contacted Rose — a renowned matchmaker (from Stalked by the Kraken) — and asked for her help in finding him a mate since females of his kind are rare but he is compatible with a few other species. When he finds Amy stumbling around outside his home, he mistakenly thinks she’s the date the matchmaker set him up with. Amy goes along with it as well since she’s intrigued and a bit curious…

I loved Amy and Adrian together so much! This relationship and romance goes from “hey I’m lost in the woods” to “you want to put your eggs in me?!” very quickly, but I believed every minute of their connection and time together. The primal intensity in this read was so good and made for some very delicious times between Adrian and Amy. The relationship is on a fast track but it made sense for this couple and I couldn’t see their story playing out any other way. Adrian’s anatomy was definitely fascinating to Amy and all of his differences made for an even better time for her. These 2 and their highly lubricated HEA will be living on in my mind!

Thank you to the author for an e-ARC. All thoughts in this review are my own. Found by the Lake Monster has a publish date of June 17, 2022.

Lillian Lark always manages to delight me with her naughty yet sweet monster romances. This one was no different.

And Amy is a woman after my own heart. Hunting down monsters to fuck and finding her one true love.

⭐⭐⭐💫
3½ stars.

➕ What I liked :

Tall heroine.

Somewhat interesting main characters.

Interesting side character (Seamus)

Some sweet/cute parts.

The chemistry was rather good.

➖ What I disliked:

The main characters needed a little more depth/background story.

The story/plot was a little bit rushed and a little bit too short.

A little too insta even for a novella.
(The romantic build up felt a tiny bit forced/rushed because of it.)

Apparently, I would let a lake monster put an egg inside of me... Learn smth new about myself every day 🤗

This was unexpectedly sweet and cozy! The smut was great and our main pair had so much chemistry...it's insane. Also! He cooks! Has a stable income! Owns a cabin in the woods...by a lake!!! Mr Dreamy indeed.
Okay, I really really wish this was a full length novel 🥺💕

side note: cannot wait for seamus' story! 👀 (it's been three years since i read thus for the first time and we STILL havent gotten it!!!)

4 stars. Nawww. A lonely lake monster MMC who is preparing a romantic dinner for a blind date + a monster romance reading human FMC who gets lost in the woods = a surprisingly sweet (and yes, very steamy) story.

3 ⭐️ Decent monster romance novella

WHAT TO EXPECT:
✨ Funny(ish), monster-fucking curious FMC
✨ Romantic, sweet lake monster MMC
✨ Mistaken identity
✨ Insta-connection
✨ Breeding
✨ Knotting
✨ Anal

I enjoy the overall story. Amy was funny and somewhat relatable. Adrian was a total simp and cutie. There’s not much character or story development past the romance, but it is a novella so that’s expected.

What took points off for me was the dialogue during spicy scenes. Sometimes it was strange. Sometimes too matter of fact so it didn’t come off as sexy. Here are some examples:

“That tongue slides inside me and my knees go weak. I’m nonsensical when he pulls away.” - Using the word nonsensical here wasn’t a good call.

“The swelling at the base of him is soft and slides inside easily, providing the lip-biting sensation of being stuffed too full.”
- 'lip-biting sensation'…we don’t need this description here because it should be more or less implied.

”I’d known that he’s a sizable guy, but knowing and pressing a cock against my asshole are two very different things. It burns at first, but slowly the slick cum and stretch starts to feel amazing.”
- I don’t need a play-by-play of how it burns and then stretches and then feels amazing.

So would I recommend it? Sure! If you’re into monster romance, knotting, and breeding. It’s a quick, fun read! I just wasn’t 100% a fan of how the author writes sex scenes.

"Okay," I say, immediately appreciating how communicative he is about his boundaries. Turns out there are men that can communicate their feelings. They're just not human. Figures.

I have a soft spot for heroines who can read the romance tropes they are currently finding themselves in. (I was kind of reminded of That Time I Got Drunk and Yeeted a Love Potion at a Werewolf that does a similar thing with it's protagonist.) Amy is a monster erotica reader and as such she is not perturbed at all when she runs into Adrian in his true lake monster form and instead pretends to be his blind date that he's waiting for. There are obviously some ethical pitfalls in all of this, but Lillian Lark manages them with more care than I even thought necessary. The romance is very sweet and insta-lovey, but I didn't mind this at all.

Going into this I was a little bit worried that this would be another romance with a breeding kink (Lillian Lark does seem to be into that), but although there were some undertones of that in the romance, ultimately for most of the story they were trying to prevent that (pregnancy) from happening. I mean, they just met, it would be crazy for them to become parents together right away... right?!

Some of the biology bits didn't make great sense - I mean, he's the one laying eggs? Does this mean that Amy just gestates them and the children are genetical copies of Adrian? I mean, that would be fine by me but I wanted the story to explain... Also, what is he ejaculating then when it clearly can't be sperm? Maybe I don't want to know...

Either way I quite enjoyed this short erotica romance and it was just what I needed at the moment. Continuing on with the series for sure!

If Lillian Lark writes it, chances are I will adore it.

This was short, sweet, steamy and an absolute delight! The author says she wrote this for fun to combat burnout and I feel like you can tell with how easy this novella is to digest.

There's humor in how self-aware the FMC is, tenderness with the MMC's circumstance, and just good ol' monster fucking.

Plus this was my first time reading oviposition :) And the MMC's dick has ridges, a knot, can lengthen into a tentacle like thing for ~egg implanting~, and has aphrodisiac cum. If I were the heroine, I too would pretend to be the MMC's blind date.

3.5 - 4 stars!

Found By the Lake Monster was super cute and endearing. Amy gets lost in the woods and happens upon Adrian the lake monster. Amy doesn’t know anything about the paranormal world and Adrian was waiting on a date to show up from a matchmaker.

Both are drawn to each other on a primal level but Amy pretends to be someone she isn’t and Adrian is running low on time to pick a mate to see him through his heat and perhaps accept his eggs.

When their truths come forward, will the two of them move on to a bright future or ignore the path fate has set for them?

Amy was such a quirky and accepting character. Despite her little lie, she truly means well and wants Adrian in all his monster glory. Her inner monologue was funny and her reactions to an unfamiliar situation was realistic and adorable.

Adrian was so lovable. I’m usually all about an alpha male and I’ll be honest…that commanding aura was definitely missing but where that was lacking…well the possessiveness and dirty talk more than made up for it. I loved his vulnerability but also loved that his masculinity stayed intact through the whole story.

Amy and Adrian were the missing pieces of each other’s souls and I enjoyed reading their story even though it was short. The smut was not skimped on and it’s definitely monster/human but Lillian writes sexy monster smut tastefully.

Overall, a cute little novella about a lake monster and his mate that I recommend to lovers of erotica out of the ordinary.

* I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review *

4/5 ⭐️s

A fast, fun read with plenty of spice to keep things hot!

I will literally read anything Lillian writes at this point. I was excited about this story after getting a hint of this lake monster in her short story in the Into The Woods anthology, and it definitely didn’t disappoint!

Adrian and Amy were adorable. Insta love is rarely my thing, but it works well with the shortened story here. I did feel like we didn’t get characters that were fully developed - both seemed very one-dimensional. But the spice was hot (oviposition was new for me 🥚🥚) and the story was fun. Overall, I enjoyed it!

Spice: 4/5 🌶

*Thank you, Lillian Lark, for sending an ARC I’m exchange for an honest review*

I don’t know how she does it, but Lillian Lark continues to create this intense monster romances that also manage to poke fun at itself.

I monster romance reader gets lost in the woods looking for the lake monster and stumbles upon the real thing when he mistakes her for his blind date. And things hear you instantly.

Adrian is the most adorable and genuine love interest I’ve seen in a while. He feels so deeply and prioritizes boundaries and consent to the max whereas Amy exists as a constant wildcard for him.

It definitely falls into the insta-love category and although I would’ve liked more time for the two to get to know each other before serious life decisions were made, the stories continue to live up to their gorgeous book covers.

My monster romance queen 🙌

CW: explicit sexual content, recurring focus on fertility issues, heavy focus on breeding/pregnancy

Adrian and Amy are absolutely adorable together. I didn’t even mind the mistaken identity trope. There was a splash of angst, but even I enjoyed that too!

The epilogue was super cute. Can’t wait to read the matchmaker and Seamus’s romances.

I think I’ve found a new monster romance author to binge! Yay!

4 ⭐️ Lake Monster Romance!

I love Lillian Lark's books and this one was no different. It was sweet, it was smutty, it had a lot of monster things and the fated mates' trope -which is always a win in my book! This series really has some of my favourite monster romances ever.

All of this to say, I had a fantastic time reading this book!
🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️/5 - I mean, the book is around 60% smut, 40% plot- personally, I loved it. There are lots of... mmm... fluids(?), so if that's not your thing maybe skip this one lol.

Edit: I forgot to say here that the main reason I was kind of excited to read this book was because it has something called ovipositioning... I had never read anything like it before, and let me tell you, it did not disappoint!!

How come this books are so filthy but so sweet!? I’m in need of more! 18 chapters was too little!

Adrian and Amy were so good together! I loved that they were very open in what they wanted and how much they cared for each other ♥️
