The world of books in one little book. It doesn't matter how well read you are, A Little Book About Books is packed full of quotes, one-liners and famous lines from names that everyone will recognise. For bibliophiles, they'll enjoy recognising their favourite passages and authors, all captured in one place. For the less-well-read, they can enjoy discovering new, illuminating quotes and passages that will provide guidance, humour and food for thought. Enjoy exploring the world of books, and the power of writing, in one small, perfectly giftable book. SAMPLE 'Let us read and let us dance; these two amusements will never do any harm to the world.' -Voltaire. 'Almost anyone can be an author; the business is to collect money and fame from this state of being.' - A. A. Milne. 'There are perhaps no days of our childhood we lived so fully as those we spent with a favourite book' - Marcel Proust. 'When I think about how I understand my role as citizen, setting aside being president... the most important stuff I've learned I think I've learned from novels.' - Barack Obama.
The perfect book for all bibliophiles. Filled with a multitude of bookish quotes some well known some lesser known.
Here are a few of the lesser known which I particularly liked.
Of course anyone who truly loves books buys more of them than he or she can hope to read in one fleeting lifetime. A good book, resting unopened in its slot on a shelf, full of majestic potentiality, is the most comforting sort of intellectual wallpaper”. -David Quammen
“I don’t believe one reads to escape reality. A person reads to confirm a reality he knows is there, but which he has not experienced”.-Lawrence Durrell
“To learn to read is to light a fire, every syllable that is spelled out is a spark.”.-Victor Hugo
“A children’s story that can only be enjoyed by children is not a good children’s story in the slightest.”.-CS Lewis
“Reading is an exercise in empathy; an exercise in walking in someone else’s shoes for a while”.-Malorie Blackman
This book is said to be "Quotes for the Bibliophile in Your Life", and, since I am a self-proclaimed bibliophile, and others have said that of me as well, this book was perfect reading for me. Every quote was better than the last, and they were all wonderful representations of bibliophiles! People from all civilizations and time periods were quoted....but the quotes are as timeless today as they were yesterday. This book was broken into chapters: Chapter 1: One-Liners, Chapter 2: The Magic of Books, Chapter 3: The Power of Words and Writing, Chapter 4: A Precious Gift, Chapter 5: Mirrors of the Soul, and Chapter 6: Famous Lines From Famous Books. For example, who hasn't read or heard this one? "It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness, it was the epoch of belief, it was the epoch of incredulity, it was the season of Light, it was the season of Darkness, it was the spring of hope, it was the winter of despair..." Charles Dickens, A Tale of Two Cities.
"One glance at a book and you hear the voice of another person, perhaps someone dead for 1,000 years. To read is to voyage through time.". Carl Sagan
This is so precious! I bought this book from the Bodlian Library gift shop at Oxford University on a recent trip to Oxford.
It’s full of quotes from books and about books and any book lover needs this book!
I think it will be something I always look back on and dip into now.
Here are two of my favourite quotes from this book-
“A children’s story that can only be enjoyed by children is not a good children’s story in the slightest.” C.S Lewis.
I have read much children’s literature this year. Books I never read as a child myself & I have enjoyed most of them thoroughly.
“The unread story is not a story; it’s little black marks on wood pulp. The reader, reading it, makes it live: a live thing, a story.” Ursual K. LeGuin
I received this book from my dear friend, Katherine Kollman, for Christmas 2023 and thought it would be the perfect book to launch my 2024 reading life. It was! Filled with quotes from and about books, I will be dipping back into this one and sharing all year long. Such a fun gift for this book lover! Here's to another wonderful year of books and bibliophilia!
Such a beautiful book! It made me remember the quotes I loved from books I’ve already read. But also made me make a list of the books I wanna read! I read it first thing in the morning before to start my day ✨
I loved all of the quotes in this book, although I think there may be a few attributed to the wrong people. I’ll be trotting these quotes out quite a lot I think.
I collect little books and have decided to make sure I've read the ones I own. This is a cute little book of book quotes and I'm happy to have it in my collection.
I picked this up on a whim for my niece who loves books. It’s become one of our favorites to read together! I have since bought several more copies to give to other bibliophiles.
“Until I feared I would lose it, I never loved to read. One does not love breathing.” -Harper Lee, To Kill a Mockingbird
Absolutely perfect little book filled with amazingly inspiring and affirming quotes. I laughed at a few and resonated with them all. A wonderful addition to my library and a highly recommended gift and/or possession for any true book lover.
I read this on vacation, specifically in a mall in Bangkok, and I think it was a cute little read. This book contains quotes about reading and books in general, like collecting books, enjoying the feeling from reading books, and the benefits of reading. This book made me really reflect on my reading.
