Soul Storm

Rate this book
No one knows exactly when it began, who formed it, or why. But when the Storm Syndicate calls, no one ignores their orders.

Tristan Arnaud has more than just his family’s smuggling background to call on when the Syndicate orders him to steal a document from the cult VSR. But using his abilities becomes dangerous when something inside the compound seduces his demon blood.

Mistreated and forced to use her strange, hated abilities, Sarin knows little of the outside world, but she recognizes criminals on sight. And Tristan wears that stamp with pride. His attitude toward stealing should sicken her. The dominance he cannot hide should terrify her. Yet she can’t stop thinking about him.

But hope, desire, and trust are dangerous bedfellows in Sarin’s small world. If Sarin gives Tristan everything he craves, will the darkness inside them both succumb to the evil surrounding them? Or can the light Sarin clings to save both their souls?

I live in Western New York, just outside the city of Buffalo, with my husband. I'm a lifelong Sabres and Bills fan, love the food, music, and festivals Buffalo offers. I enjoy camping, especially in the mountains, hiking, and visiting museums. When I'm not typing my fingers to the bone or scribbling story ideas into notebooks, I can usually be found reading, crocheting, or painting (badly). I have a love of all things crafty, magical, or unusual. Huge nerd, especially when it comes to history and mythology. My brain is full of stories, characters, random bits of trivia, and movie quotes. I have a ridiculously corny sense of humor and a love of dogs and dragons.

Note: I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

Note 2: This is an interconnected series. Please read in order, starting with Soul Storm. Next is Bard's storm. Third and final for now is Psychic Storm, coming in a month.

Triggers: sexual assault, child abuse, panic attacks, abandonment, mental and emotional anxiety and abuse, bdsm, body scars, betrayal, violence, captivity.

This was a dark read but nothing I've never read in other books.

A lot of light hearted moments also existed, but you can imagine, that in this case, the dark won more so.

I loved being in the storm syndicate world - though at times, things were a lot more complicated then was let on - and inducing a headache for me in return for that. It was mesmerizing, enchanting, and wholly selfish for it's own causes. But I loved escaping into it, no matter how dark.

And the main characters of the hour - Tristan and Sarin. Sarin was wholly abused and made into a submissive for her whole life by parents, by people in power (when has that ever been a surprise), and thus not looking much to life.

Tristan is bound to his family's duties and has to steal a document for the syndicate, from the place, VSR where sarin is.

A lot of action occurs, along with some tender moments between the two MCs, and some side hilarity from Tristan's friend and cousin, Nick (his book is Bard's storm), to make for light moments in a very dark and tumultuous world they're in.

I loved the action, the justice taken for Sarin, not much a fan of the abuse, violence and other mistreatment depicted in such graphic detail, and the tender and hilarious moments between the MCs and the side characters, all making for an intrinsically intriguing read for fantasy action/ romance lovers.

The only downside, which made me pull the rating down a little was the length of the chapters. A lot of the times, I honestly believed the chapters could be shorter, sometimes nonexistent for depicting lives in a cruel setting such as VSR.

But overall a fun and somewhat lengthy read for ya.

Until the next read,

The first in a new saucy series.

Now, I am by no means a prude, but neither am I particularly a fan of erotica, but I am a fan of Trenz's writing and characterisation.

Let me be clear, this book is by no means within the genre of erotica, it is firmly within the supernatural romance genre, however there are some pretty racy sex scenes detailing certain aspects with a dominant/submissive relationship. However, the skill of Trenz's writing is such that the story itself is not dominated by these scenes. There is a beauty to them as they are not merely representative of a sexual encounter but are linked to a character's growth and progression within the story.

Sarin Vicander is a sexually repressed, abused, and inexperienced woman, who comes to learn about her autonomy and sense of self, and accept her perceived flaws through her encounters with Tristan Arnaud. She learns that submission is a choice rather than a way of life.

Tristan is dominant but not domineering. He has all the hallmarks of the male lovers one has come to expect of Trenz; strong, respectful, protective, sensual and above all just a little bit naughty.

As someone who has read other works by Trenz (Stargazer Island series) I enjoyed reading how this story fit into that world, and spotting those links and references, however this is definitely a series unto itself. Soul Storm is a lot darker than previous works and showcases Trenz's ability to write both sympathetic and likeable characters as well as truly grotesque ones.

Trenz's interest in folklore and mythology has always been evident in her penchant for writing about more obscure creatures and supernaturals, and her take on them is always a joy to read, and Soul Storm offers both disturbing and intriguing additions.

Trenz was able to maintain dialogue between characters face to face as well as psychically, simultaneously without it ever becoming confusing, it also kept me interested in the character Nick, who quickly become a favourite of mine. As of yet, I can not pin point why exactly I was drawn to him, I guess love has no reason 🤣, however the ending appears to have set up a more central role for him in the next installment and I can't wait to read more.

An emotional dark romance that had me reading nonstop to see how Tristan with his own demons will get Sarin out of her abusive life. Forced into submissive behaviour her life long and subjected to torture from her parents, she had no idea what care or love mean. However she had strong convictions of right and wrong. Very intriguing storyline with interesting characters especially Tristan. I'm definitely going to continue the series.

We all learn at a young age that the world is all about the balance between good and evil, a precarious, shaky, ever-moving line between light and darkness in this grim, epic, unending war. Some children are taught by loving parents to fight for all that's honorable, kind and just, while others are taught by a cruel world that everything is justified for greed, power or simply survival.

And the strongest shield against evil is love.

I really liked this book, it is a well-written story about seeing beyond appearances to the what ifs of the descendants of Gods living among us - and not some major legends, but lesser known. Ancient artifacts, hidden powers, mysterious goals, strong feelings in an ugly world and an interesting build-up to what's next, with strong characters and interesting end will make you want more.

It can be read as a standalone - a big plus in my estimation, as a good book will always make me want to read the next story in the same world without being frustrated by a hard cliffhanger.

I gotta say this book is a bit different from what im used to reading. But it is good and grabbed my attention and held on to the end and liked the supernatural and mixed in crime into it. It actually flow really well and so did the characters too. So, overall really good book.

All I can say is wow! What an intense read and that ending! That cliffhanger. I'm dying for the next book already. If you've read the Stargazer serie, you'll notice some familiar characters. This book takes place a few years before Witch's Return and you get a better view of the inside workings of the VSR. However, the storyline veers off in its own direction.

The story of Tristan and Sarin is beautiful and sad. What was done to Sarin, that all she knew was pain and submission until Tristan opened her mind and healed her soul. And Tristan, the moment he laid eyes on Sarin, he knew there was something special about her and how she made him feel. He knew she was his soul before they even spoke.

The story was fascinating from the first page, with a great storyline and extra spicy scenes. I'm excited to see where it goes in the next book.

Thank you Sionna for allowing me to read and review your book.

This is the first book I have read by this author and it certainly will not be the last. I loved it.

Soul storm is like no other book I have read. It is full of twist and turns. A book of never knowing what is going to happen next. I was on the edge of my seat reading this book. I loved the mix of supernatural and crime-world thrown together, literally like nothing I have read before.

The connection between Tristan and Sarin was just incredible both a strong characters. Sarins story I definitely heart-breaking but the way Tristan helps her rebuild herself was just incredible to read.

I loved the fact that this story gets you to look further than just your appearances or what you see on the surface. The description and world building was just incredible.

An Amazing read that is left on one huge cliff-hanger- I need book 2 PLEASSSEE

My Overall Rating is 5 💋💋💋💋💋

Sionna Trenz does it again with her first delve into dark romance. I'm a sucker for a good dark romance but it can be hard to find. The Storm Syndicate series is part of Sionna's Stargazer world, however, that's where the similarities end.

Tristin is amazingly complicated, heir apparent to his father's empire, Tristin has done some shady shit but when he's forced to infiltrate a cultist compound to fulfill his father's business agreement with the Storm Syndicate he finds their practices more than even he can handle. It's a good thing that he has abilities that prevent him from becoming brainwashed like the rest of the members in this warped cult.

With Sarin's life on the line, Tristin must choose between his father's promises to a organization he had no business associating with or the love of his life.

Soul Storm kept me in suspense the whole time, I can't wait for the next one.

I was lucky enough to receive an ARC copy of this and this review is my own, unbiased opinion.

BLOOMING LOVED THIS! Tristan; you kinda wanted to hate. I knew of the Storm Syndicate from the Stargazer series, so I was expecting to really dislike some of the characters; turns out I kinda don't dislike them as much as I initially wanted to!

Sarin: I so wanted to pull her out of there from the start! What Tristan does to do so is just brilliant! And the ending: I cannot wait for book 2! I want to see how this plays out whilst interlinking with the Stargazer series. I have no idea how Sionna does it, but I do wish that Stargazer Island was real.

Go, enjoy this Urban Fantasy Romance; whilst there are romance scenes, they're not in your face, it's a part of the story, but not the WHOLE story. Go, enjoy & lose yourself in this world. Sionna cannot release the books quick enough for me and she's hit my "buy it right now" list. There are only three others on it!

Creative and really good!

This was a great paranormal/mythological romance read.

First, a warning for those who are particular in what POV they read in, this book is done in Third person POV.

This book is very heavy in plot and actually takes placer over two years of time. Our FMC and MMC do have an immediate connection but the burn in this is damn near glacial.

But this book is so sweet but also super super angsty. Sarin has been sheltered in captivity and abused her entire life yet she remains so pure and good, while Tristan is the next in line to head his underworld crime family and is an expert at stealing. This is definitely an opposites attract romance.

This book has a secret syndicate, an awful cult, people with powers, and a lot of dark vibes.

As I mentioned above, the spice in this is absolutely slow burn. But the bits and pieces we get have a bit of kink to turn the heat up for us.

Dark, paranormal, page turner romance.

🔸 The story is more than I have expected.🖤
It is a full length book with vast world building, political power intrigue, magical system, mythical lore and various paranormal creatures.

🔸️There is action, violence and gore.
Most characters are morally grey and all have hidden agenda.

🔸️ MMC is a hardened, determined alpha male with possesive dark nature. I really liked that most of the story we know from his POV. 🖤

🔸️ Romance has chemistry and tenderness. It is a slow burning seduction of curvy Little One by Demon Daddy.
The story has beautiful description of how D/s power dynamic should be like and how caring Dom should nurture and build sub's confidence and strenght. Very well executed trope.

🔸️ Well written and smooth to read.
I am going straight to book 2! 😎

I’m new to this author and series… I’m definitely used to more… spice heavy books. That being said, I really enjoyed this!

At first I wasn’t sure what to think of Sarin… would she be one of those weak submissive FMC’s we all hate that can never get over themselves? But I love love LOVED that Tristan was patient. I really loved the dynamic between Tristan and Nick, and I loved that Nick and Sarin became friends.

Things I would change? The ending seemed a little rushed. No spoilers, I promise, but in the last in the last chapter it was like this giant build up… and then “well that happened”

It won’t stop me from reading the next one tho 😂 I’m loving these characters way too much. I REALLY hope we see more of Cam.

I’ve loved all her books, but she’s hit upon something special here. She’s great at world building in all her works, but this one really set my imagination on fire! I gobbled up this book in record time. Most highly recommend! Five most enthusiastic stars! Great book to discover this multi-talented author.

Soul Storm (Storm Syndicate series book 1) by Sionna Trenz this book is a paranormal dark romance. That right there sold me on the series before even starting the books. She writes very complicated and interesting characters and plots.
Tristan is helping in his family’s business when he comes across Sarin. He knows he is deeply attracted to her and he has some decisions to make. Their story is an interesting one and I thoroughly enjoyed it.
Check your trigger warnings as always. I really enjoyed this book and can not wait to read book 2. Great job to the author!

I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review. The story is well written and quite involved with the fight between good and evil. I like the closeness of the cousins Tristan and Nicholas with how they support each other. Tristan claims Sarin as his own and helps her heal from her parent's abuse. Tristan and Sarin's love is what saves him from giving into Corin's plans.
