This is the second book in A Hitman’s Bait series and we start right where we left of in the first book. I finished the book in two days’ time, it’s a really nice read and the story has a quick pace. There were a couple of tense moments, but never for long. There’s a triggers warning in the beginning of the book, so you can check that before you start reading.
Personally, I would have liked a bit more action/adventure, but this is not that kind of story, so I can’t really complain ;)
Kit and Sully are just so sweet to another, even though they keep questioning if they are really good enough for the other. I really dislike the keeping of secrets, especially when the characters know it will never turn out well. It’s only human I suppose, but I think it was a bit out of character and mainly there to create extra tension. I kind of whished the author had thought of something else to create the tension.
One strange thing I have to remark upon: the prologue of the story is told from the point of view from a third character, whom we will encounter later in the story. That’s not the strange part. The whole story is told through Kit’s or Sully’s point of view. Except one chapter, near the end, where all of a sudden, we return to the person from the prologue. Weird!
Now, don’t get me wrong, the story continues at the same pace, but it really threw me off because I was invested in Sully/Kit and I had to do a mental recalibration. It felt like the author was kind of forcing this character on me and I didn’t like it. (Even though I did like the story line/character from this character, I felt it would be better told in another story.
There’s no cliff-hanger at the end of the story, although it did feel kind of abrupt for me. To me, there were still a couple of things which needed to be solved in this book before we are jumping into the next one. I do expect these questions to be answered/the issues addressed in the next book and can’t wait for the book to come out.
Overall, this was a really nice read, not too much angst, lots of sweet moments and a quick pace!
