This is the fifth book in the Rocky Mountain K-9 Unit continuity series but can easily be read as a standalone novel. I'm really loving this whole series and excited for the big over-arching suspense to be solved but we're still a few months away from that. Each author seamlessly weaves 'need to know' info into her book so it's easy to feel caught up even if you leap into the series midway through.

I love the remote setting for this instalment -- the heroine runs a wolf hybrid sanctuary which is all kinds of interesting on its own! But someone has it out for Paige and malicious mischief is turning more deadly. Who else can help her but her ex-beau, a K-9 officer dedicated to serving the Rocky Mountain area? Cue the Reunion Romance happy dancing music...except...

Gah -- there's a secret baby trope which is one of my least favourite tropes, right up there with love triangles and we all know how I feel about them! Usually I will just skip over this type of story, even if it's written by a fave author, but since this is part of a long running series and I have the books on audible preorder, I decided to grin and bear it. :-)

So, while I enjoyed aspects of this romantic suspense, I really couldn't wrap my head around Paige's reasons for keeping their daughter a secret from Reece for five years! Maybe initially, I could see how she would panic and hightail it out of there but, as time passed and she matured and still didn't reach out, well, I'm still a whole lot peeved at her and while Reece might have forgiven her, I'm still struggling. lol Yes, I know these are characters in a book but I tend to live each moment, each emotion with them so...

You might feel totally different or the secret baby trope might be your absolute favourite thing in the world (?!) -- if so, you'll just have to read this book and let me know what you think.

'Law enforcement officers didn't get to pick and choose who they protected. They protected all. Equally.'

I'm a fan of this author. Jodie Bailey always draws me in with her writing. She has good plots and wonderful characters. She adds to this Rocky Mountain K-9 Unit with book number five here and her contribution is just great. I was all in from the first page. The setting and plot were done very well and her characters were ones I immediately connected with. And I love when that happens.

The action is pretty much non-stop as Paige and her wolf hybrid rescue is threatened intensely throughout. She is helped by the man she ghosted six years earlier for a very good reason. That part was done very well, in my opinion. Reece is determined to protect Paige despite her treatment of him. And let me tell you, I never saw it coming who the culprit was. Not once. Well done!

My thanks to the publisher and author for a copy of this book. The opinion here is my own.

Defending from Danger was a really good read. I felt like it had more depth than the previous books and wasn't quite as unbelievable. I liked the characters and second chance romance. It was written well and I loved the K9. :) All in all, worth a read.

Paige is a total drama queen and it actually got really tiresome. The best part of the book was the animals. I'm an animal lover which is what drew me to this series to begin with. Anyone with an ounce of common sense would have gone straight to Reese when his brother was threatening her and showing him the check with which his mother tried to buy her. That scenario would have been much more interesting.

MY RATING GUIDE: 3.5. (Almost 4 but for the FMC; see below). I listened to this book while completing my outdoor autumn chores. It helped the jobs pass quickly.

(1=DNF/What was that?; 2=Not for me; 3=Ok; 3.5=I ENJOYED THIS; 4=I really liked; 5=I really loved this! 5 is rare for me).

Single parent Paige Bristol has been a widow for ten difficult months. In the past her husband Noah and Paige operated the nonprofit Howling Moon Wolf Sanctuary in Idaho together. Since his death, she has been trying to take care of the animals, manage the sponsors and funding, deal with the troubling concerns from the neighboring ranchers and locals, and now her animals are being targeted by someone unknown. Lately, someone has been trespassing and injuring her paired rescue wolf hybrids in their fenced areas. And someone just shot her! Not knowing who else to trust, Paige reaches out to former Denver police detective, Rocky Mountain K-9 Officer Reece Campbell & his K-9 partner, a German Shepherd named Maverick. Reece and Paige have history that goes back ten years or more but she hasn’t seen Reece since their last time together 6yrs ago. Their relationship didn’t end well but Reece has law enforcement contacts and other sources that might help Paige get to the bottom of who is targeting her and her animals and why. Paige needs Reece’s help, but she doesn’t want Reece to discover she has a daughter with his attractive smile.

DEFENDING FROM DANGER, bk 5 in the Inspirational Suspense anthology The Rocky Mountain K-9 Unit series by Jodie Bailey, was my first book by this author. I felt it was well written and it kept my interest. I listened to the audiobook and the performance by Cindy Kay was very good. My audio was a pack of 3 books in the 9 book series (books 4-6) which contains both an over reaching series arc and individual conflicts and plots in each book. Although I was obviously missing pieces in the series arc (from bks 1-3), DEFENDING FROM DANGER worked well enough as a standalone with plenty content of its own.

I identified quickly with the male character (empathizing with him) but Paige was keeping secrets which didn’t sit right with me. The book time period is 3 days so I suppose it takes time for someone, like Paige, to decide to share heavy personal details but she has had years. Plus, I felt she should have thought about that particular problem and dealt with it (in her mind) before calling Reece, like she did, out of the blue. Once Reece arrived, holding out on him really wasn’t fair to him. Though it was just 3 days.

Other than the above mentioned, I enjoyed the setting by the river and the story with wolf hybrids (my sister mushed Alaskan sled dogs for 20yrs and there were certain overlaps regarding dog handling and care that I enjoyed). The ending, though quick when it came, still satisfied. Now I am on to the next book in the series.

Final Note: Of books 4, 5 & 6 (Undercover Assignment, Defending from Danger, Tracking a Killer), bks 5 & 6 were my favorite. But I will probably listen to all 3 again sometime in the future. I will watch for sales for the other books in this series as well.

Paige Bristow has a sanctuary for wolf hybrids. She also has a lovely young daughter named Hailey. Hailey loves these rescues and helps her mama take care of them. Paige has a helper, Daniel. Paige also has a hybrid that stays in the house with her named Luna. Luna is very protective and very well loved.
This book starts out with suspense....the hybrid pairs are barking and pacing with one female howling and very upset. A storm is coming but Paige goes to check on her animals and finds Hope the female who is howling sees Paige and lays down beside a dark spot on the ground. As Paige approaches she sees the "spot" is Camelot, Hope's partner not moving. She talks to him as she is checking him over and finds blood. She goes to call her helper and the vet but discovers she only has the baby monitor so she could hear her daughter call out. She leaves the enclosure to go get her phone and she is attacked........ the ploy only thickens from here and gets more dangerous and suspenseful. Her old boyfriend Is a Rocky Mountain K-9 cop and is called to come help her because the local Sheriff won't. Can K-9 officer Reece and his K-9 along with Paige figure out who is targeting a widow trying to run. Rescue before the hybrids get set loose or someone dies? Get this book and find out. The twists and turns, past, present, and future make this book one I could not put down. Thought I had figured out who was behind all the bad but boy was I wrong. You will enjoy this book.

My review today is on the Love Inspired Suspense, Defending from Danger. This is book five in the continuity series, Rocky Mountain K-9 Unit. Jodie is a great author and one of my favorites so I was excited to receive this one in the mail. This book is well-written, action-packed, and full of intrigue. I know you are going to love it.

Widow Paige Bristow owns a wolf sanctuary, Howling Moon Wolf Refuge. She has been experiencing some harassment and attacks. Someone wants her wolves gone. The local law enforcement refuses to help her or believe her fears. Her only hope was her daughter's secret father. Her neighbor calls Reece for help.

K-9 Officer Reece Cambell and his partner Maverick came to help Paige, the only woman he has ever loved. He is shocked to learn of a daughter he never knew existed. He just hopes he can find the man who is tormenting her without falling in love with her again. As the attacks escalate he realizes they are in grave danger.

An exciting journey, full of mystery and intrigue. God has a plan for these two, a good plan for hope and a future. God has a plan for you too, a plan for peace and not destruction even in this time of political unrest and chaos. Give Him your heart and watch Him turn your life around.

Jodie Bailey writes a story full of action, suspense, and danger! I was turning page after page and trying to discover who the villain was. It kept me guessing up until the end!
Paige Bristol is running a hybrid wolf rescue that has her pitted against the town, the “owner of the town,” and her neighbors. Someone is willing to hurt, and maybe even kill her, to get rid of the rescue and gain her land.Rocky Mountain K-9 officer, Reece Campbell and his partner, Maverick, are called in to help Paige. We find out that Reece had planned to marry Paige at one time, but she took off without explanation. Can the two of them work together? Paige has kept
some important info from Reece. Will that change everything?

I got hooked on Love Inspired Suspense by two novels back in 2019: "Undercover Protector" by Elizabeth Goddard, which was set in an animal rescue center (focusing on tigers) and "Dead Run" by Jodie Bailey. Well, the 5th installment of Love Inspired Suspense's Rocky Mountain K-9 Unit is "Defending From Danger," which is set in an animal rescue center (focusing on wolf/dog hybrids) by Jodie Bailey. Kind of sounds like full circle doesn't it? (By the way, the next book in the series is written by Elizabeth Goodard!)

Those who read my reviews know I'm a Jodie Bailey fan. This story is no exception. The reveal of the villain surprised me. It, as usual for Jodie Bailey, has great characters and an exciting story.

As usual, I recommend this story.

Defending from Danger is book five in Rocky Mountain K-9 Unit series. I find that you can read this book as a stand alone with no problems. Bailey pulled me in at the very first and I was hooked. I was not disappointed. Paige has a wolf sanctuary and someone wants it gone. Reece who she left behind years ago is back. Can he protect Paige and her sanctuary before it is to late? Mystery, suspense, secrets. romance, and forgiveness. I highly recommend Defending from Danger. I was given a complimentary copy of this book. All opinions are my own.

I am reading this series and this one was heart wrenching at times. The heroine is Paige who takes care of the wolf dogs that she and her husband had been raising and caring for at their farm. When he passed in an accident on the river near their property she took charge and did her best to raise their daughter and run the farm and take care of the animals as best she could. It's an excellent suspense novel. As I have read #6 but not #3 I will continue on. A great series to find at your library or on line. Enjoy!

I love this series. The characters were believable and easy to empathize with. Paige is a widow with a 5 year old and a refuge for hybrids that are half wolf and half dog. When someone decides to try killing her and her rescues Reece is called in to help. Reece is the man she left behind 6 years ago. Can they overcome the hurts of the past and build a future together.

Love this series. This story caught me up in the action right from the start and it just went full speed ahead. So much happened within the course of a few days - but it took years in the making of all the secrets kept. They all just exploded in this story's time frame. It was go, go, go from the very first page. I also loved learning about the dog/wolf hybrids.

This is a well-written suspense/mystery. Paige Bristow runs a wolf sanctuary...and someone wants her dead! The only person she feels that she can trust is her ex-fiancee, and he doesn't know that he's the father of Paige's daughter.

I loved this book. Any time a K-9 is in a story it makes it better for me. Very easy to read. Fast paced with lots of action on every page. I like the mother's love in this book. Definitely look forward to reading more by this author.

I do not enjoy the hidden baby story line at all. That said, Jodie Bailey gave a plausible reason someone might have to keep a child from a man who was a potentially wonderful father. Paige was also very immature even 5 years later.

Rocky Mountain K9 Book 5

Twists and turns, lies, love, deceit, and the possibility of a return to what once was a promising future. This book had it all. The characters were interesting and I could never have guessed who the guilty party was. Enjoyed this story immensely.

Loving a Wolf-Dog!

Reading a story that was mostly written as thoughts and very little actual conversation and communication is not something I want to do again. However, I loved learning about the wolf dogs! This mystery was full of twists, turns, and a lot of frantic action!

Another good entry in the RMKU series. But something about the writing in this one had me having to re-read sentences over and over to understand what was going on. It was pretty confusing here and there.

Suspenseful, action-packed story, full of wolf hybrid dogs, a capable single mom and her young daughter, a protective, sensible FBI/K9 officer with his dog, and multiple suspects who may want to kill for the land the hybrids live on. Good narration and well paced story.
