This is the debut novel by J.C Rowe. There will 3 books in total for this series.
17-year-old, Elizabeth ‘Elsie’ Neilson has a boring life. One that seems to repeat itself, day in and day out. Known for being the headmaster’s daughter at her high school, she spends more days than not being bullied, so she wishes for something to happen that will change her life.
Then she meets Lucita ‘Lu’ Torres Alvarez, a transfer student who has enough self-esteem for the two of them. Daughter of a local Mafia boss, she is no stranger to trouble.
Drawn together by instant attraction, they discover a hobby that lets them find an outlet for their inner demons. Together they get each other through past traumas, life realisations and situations that just get out of control. Her wish gets granted, but is it more than she wished for?
Thank you to the author for an e-copy in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own.
This book is two things: Be gay do crime and Stanning women's wrongs.
Rep: white sapphic cis female MC with a permanently injured lung, Latina cis female lesbian MC, Black cis male side character, various white side characters, various Latine side characters.
CWs: Violence, petty theft, death of parent (past), past mentions of rape, physical abuse (parent/child), injury/injury detail, cursing, medical content, sexual content. Moderate: past mentions of parent with cancer, murder, death, blood, vomit, gun violence, corrupt police officials.
Well this was different to my usually sapphic reads. This YA coming of age book by J C Rowe Author is full of all your usually Teen drama times a hundred. But what do you expect when one of the MCs father is the head, of the Spanish mafia and her girlfriend is the Headmasters daughter.
This book is writtten in 1st person pov and it switches between the two main characters each chapter. I really liked this as you get to know what each character is thinking and how they process what is happening.
The main characters are well developed and you get to know them as the story progresses and their back stories are revealed. There’s a cast of extra characters that are easy to keep up with and provoke strong emotions. The love between the two MCs fires up very quickly which at first I thought was a bit unrealistic, until I remembered what a nearly 18yr old Rach was like (it’s been a while 😳) Then as you learn more about them you realise why they are so quickly drawn to each other.
Lucita (Lu) Torres has witnessed and been through things that no-one should have to, let alone a 17yr old. She’s angry and doesn’t like to follow the rules, however she’s also kind and nurturing to those she deems worthy. She’s fiercely loyal and will do anything to protect those she loves and I mean anything. She’s still haunted by her past but with the unconditional love and protection of her father, she is surviving in her own way. Elizabeth (Elsie) Neilson, is the daughter of her high schools headmaster. She has low self esteem and believes she is worthless. Her father is constantly telling her what a disappointment she is, so, she believes it. She is a target for everyone in high school and is so beaten down by life that when Lu shows up at school and actually pays positive attention to her, she takes a minute to realise it’s genuine. Elsie had the most character growth in this book. Once she had someone looking out for her, her confidence grew and she started to realise that she is worthy of more than what she’s putting up with in life. This book is about a mafia, crime family so it’s obviously full of all the nasty things you’d expect as well as lots of action and drama. Some of it was hard to read, but, these things happen in real life and not all books can be sunshine and roses. Having said that I still really enjoyed it and not once did I think I’d stop reading. Once I got back into the young adult mind set and settled into a world of crime I couldn’t put it down. I don’t want to give away anything so I’m going to leave it at that. This book is a great read and if you can, I’d give it a go because I’m glad I did.
Elise meets Lu, daughter of a mob boss, when Lu is transferred to her school. With Elsie’s father being Headmaster, getting involved with the wrong crowd is not an option, but Elsie is completely taken with Lu. Together they work through traumatic pasts, new emotions and feelings for one another, and dangerous situations.
This was a lot of fun, a real action packed adventure and because Elsie and Lu are both at high school it does have a young adult theme but I enjoyed it none the less. They were adventurous and edgy when they were together, Lu definitely bringing out an individuality in Elsie I’m not sure she thought she had. It was interesting to learn how they both faced the same challenges but how their different backgrounds changed their perspectives and ways of handling things.
The story covers some dark themes, abuse and violence, but it is handled sensitively and with care. It is a big part of what forms the initial bond between Elsie and Lu that eventually made them inseparable. Lu really was such a kind caring young woman, despite all the things she got up to. She was well connected to, so could do some pretty cool stuff most young people wouldn’t be able to. Their friendship and growing relationship explored everything someone goes through when falling in love quickly when someone completely turns their world upside down.
A great story, which provides a very exciting start to the series. What awaits Elsie and Lu is unpredictable but will most likely be thrilling, so I can’t wait to read more.

This is someone I consider a friend to me. I read the book twice because I wanted to try to give my friend the best review this book deserves. To my knowledge this is my friends first book, and J. C. wrote it like it wasn’t a first book she ever wrote.
I loved this Lesbian Romance Drama book. I didn’t put it down either time.
I read it first on the 2nd of May (got it the first of May) went to write a review and decided to see if it’s a book I’d read again, and as I expected I read it again May 5th.
You notice something different every single time in the book, it’s beautiful, unique, and I hope there is a second book.
The cover, everything is like so much time, thought and effort was put in to it. This is why I will be ordering a book and I hope J. C. Rowe can do the honors of signing it in being in my shelf with the big boys/girls.
Received book for free for an honest review. An interesting plot which would appeal to young adults - especially teens. TW for abuse and violence. Sex scenes. I feel this is a young author who may have written fanfic prior to this but I’m sure their writing style will develop further with experience. The speed at which the main characters develop the emotional relationship was rapid fire and not to my taste but overall a nice sapphic action packed read for the teens.
It was an interesting and well-written read. I didn’t like the insta-love and I didn’t expect the dark themes and storyline. This is not my kind of book, but I can see how others may enjoy it.
(4.5 stars) ‘We are Hell’ is a fast-paced rollercoaster of a story; Rowe really didn’t take their foot off the gas for the entire novel and although initially I felt a bit conflicted as to how quickly the relationship develops between Elsie and Lu but once I just gave in on this, I really was hooked. *Trigger warnings for domestic abuse, sexual abuse, drug use and violence. I did love the chemistry between the two young women and although it was an extreme situation in which a high school principal's daughter and a gang leader’s daughter fall fast and hard for one another, it was really beautiful to see them evolve and grow stronger because of one another. The changes and healing that both of them go through are so integral to the sapphic romance genre and I adored this fresh perspective from an exciting new writer!
This is the first book I’ve read by this author. I have mixed feelings about this book. I understand there is a Bonnie and Clyde feeling to this book and I’m all for some rebellious teenagers.
Where I found my hard time was, was with the insta-love and the writing style. I personally have a hard time believing insta-love but I can also understand that they are young and your first love is usually the one that blazes the hottest and I absolutely got that vibe. The writing style also seemed a bit amateur, not sure if this is a debut or not. I felt like some of the dialogue was a bit immature, but at the same time I am aware that the main characters are teenage girls.
I loved the kind of forbidden relationship that comes with a good girl/bad girl situation. I thought it was romantic the way Lu took care of E and getting the opportunity to see growth in E was nice too. The spice level was a little higher than I anticipated, and I give it a 🌶️🌶️🌶️ chili rating.
The ending left me feeling like there is probably going to be a second book? Where this one leaves off, it would be cruel to leave us without knowing what happens! I am rooting for them despite their actions because all they want to do is be together forever which is sweet, but they also committed some crimes and I’m not sure how big bad dad is gonna get them out of this one. I will be reading the next installment should there be one.

As a non book reader I could not put this book down. I read it within 48 hours and I could not put it down. I stayed up way past my usual bedtime reading it to find out what happened next. I highly recommend this book to all! Coming from someone who has not read a book in over 10 years! 🤣 can't wait for the next one! To stay up late again reading!
I'm a reader who is easily distracted by poor grammar and typos. BUT I have got better at overlooking many things, as I realise stuff will always slip through.
For the first, say, 30-40% of the book, I did just that. Said, Dee, let it go. Don't worry about all the annoying commas before that and to. But as the book progressed the errors started to grate on my nerves.
1. "Is she your wife or daughter?" I asked, generally interested. (Wrong word. Genuinely? - Who knows, I was able to forgive this.)
2. The constant use of commas before to and that drove me to distraction. a knock on the door, that made me snap my gaze away. Stepping forward, to try and stop the officer. I stuck my hand out, to break my fall. You know as well as I do, that being...
Those things aside, I've read a lot of lesbian fiction and insta-love isn't unheard of, but this story takes it to a new level. One day! And it was a passionate declaration, not just I might be falling for her. Because goddamn it, I did love Elsie, even though I had only known her for a day.
There were a lot of other questionable things in the story - the incident at the school with the car bomb was ridiculous - and in the end, I couldn't keep going.
This review is for my reference, so don't be put off by what didn't work for me.
This was a very well written, fast paced rollercoaster of a story, and I really enjoyed what it had to offer. This story is about two highschoolers that are coming of age, and all the navigating of hard feelings and situations that they go through. You get to learn more about Elsie and Lu, and honestly, I'm excited to read the next book and see what it has to offer.
I moved this to the front of my TBR pile and I'm so glad I did! It had me hooked from the start. The story follows two high schoolers coming of age and navigating hard situations and feelings. I loved how the view switched back and forth, so you get to know Elsie and Lu. I highly recommend rereading it and I'm looking forward to book two.
I couldn’t put this book down! I was obsessed with the love story of Lu and Elsie and all the twist and turns this book has to offer. I don’t think I have finished a book so fast. I am excited for part 2! And love that this author decided to write about a queer relationship as there needs to be more books with this kind of representation. 100% recommend!!
Better then Riverdale, not to heavy on the 18+ scene's, blends perfectly into the plot. Questioning my sexual orientation now. 5 stars, written so captivating it's like a movie in your head not words on paper. 💕
I dont know where to start with this book. There is a lot to unpack. It was very surprising I was expecting a teeny high school book but what I read was a very fast paced, intense, gritty and a well written book about family secrets, gangs, trust, loyalty and survival. Does contain some trigger issues but i was hooked from the first page, every page there was a rollercoaster of action and drama. Couldnt book the book down until I had finished. Looking forward to the next two instalments
AMAZING!!! I was caught from the first chapter. Finished it in 12 hours! Could not put it down! There story line is so interesting and the way the author has written it really makes you feel for the characters. Absolutely brilliant story and this would make a GREAT movie!! Bring on number 2 please!
This book is not for the fainthearted! A true Rollercoaster ride, the passion between the MCs is palpable, the characters are well developed and the more I read about their past trauma, the more I could empathise with their actions. I can't wait for the sequel!
An exciting, thrilling storyline with lots of action, suspense and drama. I never read books, but I really enjoyed this particular one and found it hard to put down.
I was given this book complimentary from BookSirens in e-book form in return for my honest review. Everything stated in this review is of my own opinion and I was not compensated monetarily for providing this review. This is the debut novel by this author and based on this I believe J. C. Rowe is a name we will be hearing a lot more of in the future. Why? Not because of the story, it's average (I'm not a fan of insta-love), or the characters who are a bit cartoonish but because the author has the amaz great debut novel.ing ability to let you feel the emotions she is writing -when the girls get caught you can feel your heartrate increasing. Without spoiling anything all I can say is the author makes you feel like you are an invisible presence there with Lu and Elsie. I hope she doesn't lose this as her career progresses. I like the dual POV here going between the two m/cs, the author makes it work. One comment needs to be made here. in these days of authors producing what are in effect novellas or long short stories and passing them off as novels it is refreshing to read an author who actually delivers a full size novel, appreciate it. Recommended to all fans of Sapphic fiction and anyone who enjoys a good thriller
We are Hell is an interesting read. I think the plot was excellent and the idea of the main characters was also a great one however I felt let down with the portrayal of this story. I felt like the story was a bit too inconsistent at times and jumped to conclusions many times without properly exhausting each scene.
I did love though the idea of Elsie finally standing for herself and I believe there is potential of and interesting development there.

A lot happens in this book and the pace is high. I did not know what to expect starting this book, but it appeared to be too much for me.
The writing was good and so is the storyline, but I could not connect with the story or the MC's. Their love is quite fast and goes just as hard as the story. Maybe I'm a bit slow but I could not keep up.
This is a story for people who like fast paced story where lots and lots happens. Be aware for the TW as there are a lot of triggers you have to keep in mind.

Trigger warnings for We Are H.E.L.L include: sex, emotional and physical abuse, child abuse, violence, death, gaslighting, profanity, rape and drug use. ☆ ☆ This was one hell of an eventful book I'll say that much. Sapphic characters, an abusive father, a crime family, and HELL. ~ I don't think I can adequately sum up how much happened in this book without giving any spoilers. ~ It was very fast paced and I finished it in less than a week of properly starting it. It was very different to the queer books I typically read, and I think I liked it partly for that factor honestly. ~ The one thing that kinda put me off, and something I skipped past each time it came up was the sexual scenes, but that has more to do with me than the book itself. • Thank you to BookSirens for giving me the opportunity to read this book in exchange for an honest review.
If you’ve been longing for a younger, gayer, and more diverse Thelma and Louise or a lesbian Bonnie and Clyde, We Are H.E.L.L. is for you. If follows two seventeen-year-old abuse survivors falling in love and taking back their power. And while I don’t condone or recommend committing a crime spree in real life, it sure is cathartic to read about.
Elsie and Lu are both well-rounded and relatable characters. Their attraction to each other is immediate and intense, but believable. I rooted for them from the start. Some suspension of disbelief is required for the things Techy is able to pull off, but that’s par for the course with hacker characters.
Fair warning, if you’re not comfortable reading about SA or DA you may find the book triggering. I tend to avoid stories with SA, but since it wasn’t gratuitous, thrown in purely for shock value, or described in an overly graphic way, it wasn’t a deal breaker for me.
I’m looking forward to reading the next book, and following H.E.L.L. on their new adventure.
