Eiichiro Oda (尾田栄一郎, Oda Eiichirō) is a Japanese manga artist, best known as the creator of the manga and anime One Piece.

As a child, Oda was inspired by Akira Toriyama's works and aspired to become a manga artist. He recalls that his interest in pirates was probably sparked by the popular TV animation series titled Vicky the Viking. He submitted a character named Pandaman for Yudetamago's classic wrestling manga Kinnikuman. Pandaman was not only used in a chapter of the manga but would later return as a recurring cameo character in Oda's own works.

Even though the raid on Onigashima was dragging a little bit, Wano was awesome as a whole and an epic finale for the 400 chapter long build-up. Loved my re-read of this arc.

The Wano arc is coming to a close, and there is a LOT to talk about, including the World Government being shitty, and the actually-surprisingly-good handling of the multiple new-or-reintroduced trans or gender-nonconforming characters, which brings us at last to:

Queerness in One Piece, part 7: Okiku, Yamato, and Izo
KikuYamato
As discussed in previous reviews, the samurai Okiku is very clearly a trans woman – and one who is very conventionally pretty and feminine, which we hadn’t seen in this series yet. She has a brother, Izo, who we met earlier as one of the Whitebeard Pirates, who sports very geisha-like hair and makeup and wears a somewhat feminine-looking kimono but identifies as a man. Getting to see them interact was heartwarming and a little sad:
“Izo: Kiku. Does your [missing!] arm pain you?
Okiku: Hahaha. Why would you ask a samurai that question? It’s merely an itch until my very life is expended. No worse than the itch this one felt in the heart on the day you left for good.
Izo: C’mon. But if you’re doing well enough to tease me, I’ll take that as a good sign!”

I wish that But

Yamato is a somewhat more ambiguous case. He is Kaido’s kid, who in his youth was known as the “ogre princess”. But he developed a very strong hero worship and identification with Oden, and tells Luffy that, since Oden was a man, so is he. Interestingly, not only does Luffy accept this (because of course he does) even Kaido calls Yamato “my son” and his underlings call him “young master”. A lot of fans, however, do not follow suit. My guess is that this is because A) Yamato doesn’t do anything to change or disguise his body shape and people who are attracted to women are likely to think he’s hot…and then probably feel weird about calling him “he” and they figure B) the ambiguous wording of the explanation and the character explanation card listing him as “Kaido’s daughter” (presumably musume rather than musuko, in the original) gives them wiggle room to assume Yamato is really a woman. Here's the thing, though. Even if Yamato is a rare example of that phenomenon TERFs like to go on about (the woman who has convinced herself she’s a trans man because misogyny or whatever)… Yamato is happy living his life the way he does, and all the characters, even the villains, very quickly adapt to using the forms of address Yamato wants. So get it together, fanboys!

To confirm all the above, as the characters are rejoicing in Luffy and Zoro’s recovery from their wounds, this happens:
“Nami: Yamato, let’s take that bath before the festival!...
Yamato: Sorry, Nami! There’s no mixed bathing in the castle.
Okiku: Do you mind, if this one joins you?”

Bath
And no, she and the other cis ladies don’t mind Okiku joining them, and most of the men are being normal about Yamato as well. Sanji is nose-bleeding off in the corner…but he doesn’t try to act protective of Yamato or pick a fight with other men for being in the room (as he probably would if this was Nami or Robin), nor does he ever call Yamato a “lady” or “Yamato-chan” or anything like that. So, I’m gonna read this as him being a fan of nice tits no matter who they’re attached to! Granted, there is a bit of an imbalance here that probably reflects Oda’s own obvious “boob man” preferences, in that we do see quite a bit of Yamato’s body while Okiku is very modest so we never see her (presumably flat) chest even in the bathhouse scene. Which, hmmm… Though, on the other hand, Okiku being “very mindful, very demure” (in the words of a recent meme created by a trans woman!) and Yamato having this kind of exuberant, boyish, “I don’t care what I look like” thing going DOES make them refreshingly different from the brash, flamboyant trans woman archetype you see in a lot of anime/manga, and the shy soft-boy trans guy you see…well, not in anime/manga because trans guys are rare there, but in other recent media. I DO wish we’d gotten a little bit of Okiku interacting with Sanji, provided he could act normal or even recognize her as being very pretty, because that would have shown a lot of growth from his behavior in the Kamabakka Queendom…and signal to readers with similarly binary views of gender that they could change too!

Note when it comes to “he” or “she”…the equivalent words in Japanese are usually gender-neutral. But we can get some info on how a character views themselves by what 1st person pronoun (“I”) they choose. (Not actually a spoiler, but controlling for length):
So, which do these three characters use? Izo: the brash, masculine “ore”. Yamato: the boyish “boku”. Okiku: the samurai-and-ninja specific “sessha”. My guess would be that, since everyone tends to understand she’s a woman just by looking at her, THAT’S the part of her identity that is most important to declare!

But, overall, I think the biggest and most welcome change for how these characters are portrayed is that their gender-identity-stuff is not part of their gimmick. To be clear, I adore both Bon Clay and Iva. But once you have one gender-fluid shape-shifter and one Rocky Horror inspired person with hormone powers…you don’t need to keep doing that! And when it comes to the way the Kamabakka Queendom residents – who, it should be noted, have at least taken their place with ALL the other queer characters as allies of the Straw Hats – were drawn…oof! So, to have Okiku, Izo, and Yamato be normal-looking people who just happen to dress and/or identify differently than how one might have expected based on their bodies, and who are badasses in a way that has nothing to do with that, is really nice.
Izo

Then there’s a moment which doesn’t unambiguously belong in “queerness in ‘One Piece’”, but also sorta feels like it can be mentioned in the same breath. As discussed previously, Hiyori, who is the princess of Wano and also had to pose as the country’s most swooned-over courtesan, was rescued by Zoro and developed a huge crush on him. Zoro has never exhibited a hint of interest in women, and when he discovers that Hiyori has cuddled up to him while he’s asleep and Brook starts congratulating him, he’s just deeply annoyed. Something similar happens here: Zoro wonders why he and Luffy aren’t dirtier, if they’ve been asleep since the battle, and Hiyori explains that she cleaned them, asking (inappropriately!) “Is that exciting for you?” Sanji says hotly that he and Zoro need to have words. It’s not clear why, since regardless of WHO he is jealous of…the swordsman was unconscious for that, so it isn’t his fault! And Zoro completely ignores Hiyori in favor of announcing that he came back from the dead to keep his promise to Sanji. Now, granted, the way he phrases this is and the two immediately start fighting! But none of the other Straw Hats look remotely concerned, because these two never even do comedy-bruise-lump damage to each other. And, in fact, picking a fight got Zoro out of that awkward situation with Hiyori and fully redirected Sanji’s attention to him - which he does a lot, actually, verbal-pigtail-pulling exactly when Sanji is going into swooning mode over a lady. And, TBH, he does probably have some worry and frustration to work out about . So, regardless of how you interpret their relationship - I think this is kind of adorable!

I don’t know how I feel about Momonosuke getting seemingly permanently aged-up 20 years, so that he’s becoming shogun as an 8-year-old who looks 28 (which is also the age the people at large would expect him to be; he’s still 8 because he jumped through a time portal). I feel like the plot of the movie ‘Big’ shows why that sucks on multiple levels! It could have been made a lot worse given that there’s been a (bad) running joke about grown men acting jealous of Momo’s license to stick his face right up in women’s chests when he hugs them, and him acting smug about that (hopeful realistic interpretation: purely because he can tell they’re jealous…because HE’S A KID!). Fortunately, the first time he tries that after the change it’s with Nami, who isn’t shy about slapping a shogun clear across the room! She then feels bad, remembering that he really is just a little boy. But considering that other women DON’T know that, and might be a lot more reticent to tell off their ruler, she just did everyone a favor by firmly demonstrating that that’s not allowed anymore. His primary circle of advisors also know about the situation, and also clearly care about him, so hopefully they’ll be able to advise and protect him accordingly.

In terms of world events, there is also a lot going on! The World Government is upset that Big News Morgans from the World Economic Press went ahead and printed Luffy’s new bounty poster using his Gear 5 form – because they wanted to keep that under wraps!
Big News Morgans: “Kwa ha ha! Just look at that mystical form!...I won’t let them manipulate THIS narrative! At moments like these when the world is in flux, the straight facts are the most fascinating news there is!! There’s nothing like good old live entertainment!”
We also learn why the World Government was ready to jump in and take over Wano if they opened their borders: And there’s a new admiral with plant powers, but he’s just much a dick as most of the others, if not more. When fighting with Momonosuke and the samurai, he says:
“Let me teach you something! Humankind has lasted through the ages by creating and defining the inferior! All the rest of us can look down our noses at you unaffiliated countries! Discrimination creates solace! It doesn’t matter how many people die in this country, because the law does not apply here!” Gross, but unfortunately a real-world-relevant sentiment!
PlantGuy
The World Government is also claiming that . But that doesn’t seem his style, and Iva’s reaction is shock and disbelief, so it certainly doesn’t seem like that was the Revolutionary Army’s actual plan. The plot thickens!

After dozens of volumes leading up to the Wano arc and then over a dozen Wano volumes itself, Oda Sensei has brought Wano to a close (almost). I won’t lie and say that it’s a satisfying end because I really struggled through parts of it and some of the climatic fights weren’t as epic as Oda Sensei may have hoped because I just didn’t care about who the Straw Hats and Scabbards were fighting and the focus kept shifting away.

Otherwise, Luffy going all Looney Tunes and channeling the Sun God in Gears 5 made for a fun climax to his climactic fight with Kaido. The fight was much better than the other fights going on and worth the build up (mostly). The subsequent liberation of Wano might not have had quite the same impact as the post-climax celebrations in Alabasta, Water 7 and Dressrosa but it was nice and sometimes funny (Momonosuke no longer being able to perv on Nami). It was also nice seeing what’s going on outside Wano, albeit frustrating in that a lot has happened offpage (Sabo, the Reverie, Vivi and her father, etc.). Less frustrating was getting Shanks again, with him just offshore saving Wano from an all powerful and angry admiral with his Haki. And very intriguing is Shanks deciding it's time for Shanks himself to acquire the One Piece (is Shanks a secret villain/are we getting a Shanks and Luffy showdown now? Oda Sensei have you been lying to us all these years???).

Lot of intriguing setup for things to come and I hope there’s better payoff than what I saw in Wano (despite everything that did work in Wano). This volume though was a sufficient conclusion and breather before the Straw Hats (led by a newly crowned Emperor) head out again.

Goodbye Wano, it’s been a journey! 🏴‍☠️

Can’t believe how much happened in this volume! The action was great and I had goosebumps and tears in my eyes throughout. So wholesome and truly inspiring!

The scene with Shanks had me 💀

Also how can these covers keep getting so beautiful?! I can’t wait until March for the next one!

I keep wondering why I haven’t read as many books this year as the previous two years, then I remember: I read 104 VOLUMES of One Piece! If One Piece was binded into one book, it would be 21,540 pages long. And it’s still going! The story follows a Luffy — a boy pirate that ate a magical fruit that makes him extend his arms like rubber — and his crew of pirates as they search for a massive treasure called the One Piece and contend with pirate warlords and a corrupt world government. In terms of quality, when One Piece is good, it’s really good. The world develops over time and Oda moves them around like chess pieces until they all clash together in some really great moments. But nothing that is this long will be ALL good. I did find some arcs where I was honestly just skimming and trying to get to the interesting stuff again. Also, I will say that Oda isn’t the best at writing women characters (for one, they are all drawn so similar it is difficult to differentiate at times who is who, a tactic I think is made to sell figurines in Japan/U.S.) and while some are strong, they have definitely been falling to the wayside in terms of plot as of the latest arc. But what kept me going was the kind of Saturday morning cartoon feel mixed with action and panels that absolutely demands your attend at times. It’s just fun.

Morgans.

and that’s pretty much the end of wano!!! wano js a country that oda has been teasing / referencing for 15-20 years before the crew formally arrived, and he did not disappoint! one of the best arcs in the whole series, and so important. the wano saga (ranging from punk hazard to wano) all started because law had a 13 year grudge against doflamingo, now luffy is an emperor of the sea!!!

Volume 104: Chapter 1047-1055
Saga 10: Wano Country
Arc 31: Wano Country

20 years ago, after Oden's death. Kaido and Orochi is hunting the Kozuki bloodline. The Daimyou of Udon, Ringo, Hakumai and Kibi waged war against Orochi and Kaido but they lose. And that's the beginning of Wano falls in hell. Back to the present, Orochi escaped from the seastone nail. He transformed into one-headed snake and urged to kill Hiyori. Denjiro arrived and decapitated Orochi's last head.

Luffy used his most powerful attack, Bajrang Gun. His fist is as big as Onigashima. Kaido used Flaming Drum Dragon to counter Luffy. 46 years ago, Kaido was enlisted to the World Goverment but he refused. He questioning the relevant of paying tribute to the Tenryuubito. He keeps getting caught and escape from World Government. 2 years later when he was 15, Kaido joined Rocks Pirates. After the God Valley Incident, Kaido formed Beasts Pirates. King is waiting for the Joyboy. Kaido knows who is Joyboy; the person that can defeat him.

Kaido's flame clouds disappeared and Momonosuke used his flame clouds to float Onigashima and land safely. Luffy's Bajrang Gun managed to punch Kaido hardly into the deep in the land of Wano. Luffy officially defeats Kaido. The rebellion forces win the war. The remaining Akazaya along with Momonosuke and Hiyori appeared infront of the citizen of Flower Capital. Momonosuke was announced as a new Shogun of Wano. Wano once again enter the peace era.

The news about the fall of Kaido and Big Mom spread worldwide. Luffy, Law and Kidd bounties also rise up to 3 billion Berry each. The new Four Emperors were announced; Shanks, Blackbeard, Buggy and Luffy.

Tenguyama meet Robin and he revealed that he is Kozuki Sukiyaki, former Shogun of Wano. From the poneglyph in Alabasta, Robin is searching for the ancient weapon, Pluton. Sukiyaki confirmed that it is in Wano. Law also there to know more about Wano. They went into the below level of Wano. 800 years ago, Wano is located the same as sea level. A wall was erected and the rainwater accumulated and submerged the old Wano. The new Wano was build upper. The Road Poneglyph was located at the basement of the old Wano. There also the ancient weapon, Pluton and to retrieve it, the wall surrounding the Wano must be destroyed. It is the meaning of the opening the border of Wano.

At the same time, Shanks and his crew already sail at the Wano's sea. Shanks plan to reclaim the One Piece. Some major incident happened in Mariejois. In the news, Sabo was framed of murdering Nefertari Cobra. Earlier, there was a battle between the Revolutionary Army and Admiral Fujitora and Admiral Ryokugyu. The Revolutionary Army managed to save Bartholomew Kuma. Princess Vivi also reported missing.

Admiral Ryokugyu or his real name Aramaki is on his way to Wano. He attacks prisoner mine in Udon and easily defeat Queen and King. Admiral Ryokugyu have Mori Mori no Mi, that allowed him to control forest. The Akazaya, Momonosuke and Yamato trying to stop Admiral Ryokugyu from capture Luffy. Momonosuke doesn't want help from Luffy and others and he want to protect Wano by his strength. Later, Shanks used his Haoshoku no Haki to get Admiral Ryokugyu off from Wano.

luffy’s gonna punch down so he asked momonosuke to move the island away.

oden’s desire to open wano is to welcome joyboy.

denjiro killed orochi before the latter can harm hiyori.

momonosuke managed to make the flame clouds just in time.

They did it! Kaido is down. LUFFY WON

tama’s kibidango powers will last for a month.

we see the grown up momonosuke. he vowed to restore wano and later, he would be known as a great shogun.

Hawkins is dead or alive? 1% survival rate is low but not impossible.

sorry momonosuke, the moment you’re not child size, you won’t be in nami’s embrace anymore.

kaido and big mom’s defeat was spread before the marines could stop it. kid, law, and luffy were all given 3 billion berries each, and luffy’s picture on the wanted poster changed to his joyboy look.

mr. tengu is kozuki sukiyaki = oden’s father = hiyori and momonosuke’s grandfather. but none of them know about his identity except for nico robin. she knows that the ancient weapon, pluton, is in wano, as mentioned in the poneglyph in alabasta.

rokugyu, navy hq admiral, arrived at wano.

lol kid wants to get rid of luffy now, but was roped into celebration by luffy. the current four emperors: buggy, teach, shanks, and luffy.

SHANKS IS GOING FOR THE ONE PIECE. sabo is known as the flame emperor.

king cobra died and vivi is missing. the revolutionary army targeted the homes of the celestial dragons and managed to rescue kuma.

mr. tengu brought robin and law further down into the basement of the castle and they saw the wano from 800 years ago, wano underwater. for some reasons, walls were erected around the island and when the rainwater had nowhere to escape, wano was submerged underwater so the citizens had to move vertically upwards for land. robin found their third road poneglyph. further down is the sleeping ancient weapon, pluton. retrieving pluton would require the walls to be removed.

”If we still have to depend on the people who wish to leave, how can we look any of you int he eyes and say that Wano is safe with us?”

momonosuke is trying to drive out rokugyu and shanks, who was nearby, used conqueror’s haki on him. rokugyu left. sanji, zoro, luffy, and jimbei were looking at this unfold and luffy instinctively knew it was shanks’ haki.

I never really knew why they called it a "meteoric rise."
Meteors fall down; they do not rise.
Maybe it's the idea that they come from the heavens and so they're really high up?
But geez loweez, Monkey D. Luffy started from the bottom, and 2 years and a couple of months in-universe later as soon as he smacked an evil dragon into the molten core of the world and liberated not!Japan, the yahoos in charge declare him one of the biggest threats in the world!
If that's not a meteoric rise, I don't know what is!

Also, nice to meet the new a-hole that replaced our (literal) cool admiral and surprise surprise, it's another Logia. But he's cheating somewhat since we've established that there are some wacky wacky plants in-universe, and as we've seen from other comics characters like the Swamp Thing, Poison Ivy, and some versions of Demeter, flora of all kinds can be a force to be reckoned with.

The party to end all parties, and well deserved. What was not well deserved was the Shanks focus; any time he turns up is just the biggest flop. No reason for him to be anywhere near Wano and so it feels unearned when he just does a cameo drive-by. Even worse, he doesn’t even do anything. Nearly dropped this to three stars just for him (and I still may).
