Um..so i follow this author on tiktok and was really hyped about this book but * sighs * it was a let down :(

the H (hunter) was basically a dick, idc if his redeeming quality is being able to fuck you so good to see nirvana. he treated the mc like shit till 65% of the book and there were way tooo manyyy OW scenes for my liking

(there was even one DESCRIPTIVE explicit scene with H and OW before he became a thing with h? author, what made you think i would fucking enjoy such descriptions of that????!!!)

the h (marley) lmaoaoaoaoaoaoaooa the name reminded me of marley the ghost from Christmas Carol sorry..but problem solved here because the H insists on calling her "bambi" (yes the motherfucking deer) because she looks innocent..like..ok?!

she was not marley or bambi or anything..for me she was Bob the builder.. girl never gave up on this guy who treated her like shit (she's more pathetic than Tate from ugly love because tate was at least getting some action while being treated like shit) while miss gurl here was just went back home crying day and night

I get the "i can fix him attitude " like ok..
(i still think i can fix Aaron warner)

But if a guy treats me like shit or makes me feel small just for TRYING to help him get out of his ass?
bitch bye see you later ..preferably never : D

The plot was not really that intriguing ..i lost interest at 75% but kept on reading but it was not really that worth it so..

And their chemistry was pretty weird i can't exactly put a finger on it ..it was just IT

i hated the random pov switches as well ..whenever Adam and Dex povs come up im like 'woah there'

1.5 star, I blame tiktok for making me read this book. I was really curious to read it but ??? it's not worth it.

Marley literally gets treated like a doormat for 98% of the book. She accepts whatever Hunter says or does because she "has a good heart, god bless her". Hunter treats her like she's a 10-year-old, calling her Bambi ("because she has big eyes"), Minnie, saying she's half his height, that she has small feet and other cringe-worthy things. He treats her like a dog but does not allow, from day one, any other man to approach her or go out with her. He, on the other hand, continues to sleep with other girls (whom he treats as mere sexual objects) almost until the end of the book.

She's in love, he's not, she decides to leave, he realizes he made a mistake and that he loves her (randomly ??) and goes to her, they end up sleeping together and then get together. The story of his dead mother is thrown in there as a justification for everything he does. It literally has no purpose in the plot other than this.

Not worth it.

I don’t like to post bad reviews, it’s not normally my thing because it’s usually a preference thing but for this I felt like I need to for various reasons.
1. This book was marketed all over TikTok as something COMPLETELY different. This is barely a romance. The author made it seem as if Hunter was going to be some avenging hero for our FMC, after a shitty ex boyfriend. Turns out Hunter was even worse IMO.
2. The hero is fucking OW for 65% of the book and hates the FMC. And when he supposedly realizes he loves her is just hours after he has a 3some and then immediately kisses the FMC. Uhhh I’m sorry, are we supposed to not have an entire ICK about this? I full body cringed and it never got better.
3. We get an explicit sex scene of Hunter and OW just mere pages prior to him being with FMC. I’ve read books with explicit sex scenes with other people besides the MC’s but it’s usually in the beginning/towards the beginning. How are we supposed to read this and believe the relationship between these two people
4. Marley is a doormat the ENTIRE book, she never grows. There is no character growth or redemption moment. She gives up EVERYTHING for a man who was cruel to her and just hours before was fucking other women. I can’t. What would have been redeeming was her leaving and making him chase her and grovel and prove himself. But we got none of that. She just stays a doormat for shitty men.
5. The drunk driving. Nothing more. It was an awful plot point and the “twist” was mediocre at best.
6. AGAIN- I have to reiterate- The marketing of this book. I think if it would have been marketed more like an “Ugly Love” by Colleen Hoover, I wouldn’t have had such a visceral reaction to all of the atrocities Hunter commits but because it was marketed(on TikTok by the author) as this great love story, it was so disappointing. The author made it seem(on TikTok) like we were getting this amazing book boyfriend who stands up for our heroine against this awful ex but that’s not what happens. Her whole marketing plan was only derived from the last 20% of the book and seems really manipulative now.

I’m sorry I went on this rant but I’ve only been this enraged about a few books in the 8 years I’ve been reading romance, and this book happened to enrage me. I honestly wish I never read it 😬

I was disappointed with Hunter. He is with other women for more than half the book and even has descriptive spicy scenes with them. I remember those scenes more than the ones with Marley bc they were in my opinion better. He also didn’t grovel too much in my opinion when I feel he needed to do more. I also felt it there were too many time jumps and we couldn’t really see their relationship develop from friends to more it was just so sudden A little spoiler here is when Marley was leaving to go back to New York, he was literally with multiple girls a few hours earlier and then he kisses Marley, it ruined the whole book for me. I was so excited for this book and the whole ow stuff bugged me, I almost dnf

⌠ ★☆☆☆☆ ⌡

i was really excited about this book because of the excerpts the author had shared on her tiktok account. the excerpts were intriguing but the book itself was underwhelming.

marley was such a pushover to the point where she was basically a floor-mat for hunter to walk all over. she did stand up to him a couple of times and tried to knock some sense into him but there’s a limit to how long a person can stand by someone before it’s unhealthy and borderline abusive. also, i found it strange that she just spilled her guts to people she just met and immediately starts hanging out with them like they’re best friends?

hunter was a horrible love interest. (sorry not sorry) he made for an interesting character just because he portrayed the darker side of grief. grief isn’t always sadness and isolation, sometimes it’s dangerous and ugly. however, his grief doesn’t justify his mistreatment of marley and just about everyone in his life. he was so stuck in his grief that at times it felt like he refused to get better. everyone around him constantly described him as a child and they were right. he complained and judged everyone yet hated when people judged him (?). he was plain annoying.

the book had an interesting premise and plot however it fell flat. some chapters were repetitive and boring. the author wasted a lot of the book’s potential on filler chapters that did nothing for the storyline. moreover, i didn’t mind the OW scenes just because i know they were part of his grieving process, however, i will say that they became bothersome. at the halfway mark hunter was still hooking up with other girls and mistreating marley. like PLS give me something that will redeem this man. also, the fact that this book is inspired by true events is sad because, y’all really be letting men treat y’all like this????

pls pls pls! check the trigger warnings that the author lists at the beginning of the book.

’m sorry but I was really excited for this book and I was so happy when I finally found out it came out but reading it really let me down.
First, there was so much scenes with the OW.

Some of the scenes were not okay to me.

SPOILERS

Hunter is stupid.
For example when Marley called the authorities on Hunter for drunk driving it made it seem like the blame was all on her and she was in the wrong when really it was him. He blamed her the whole time and she thought she was in the wrong too and I just made me so angry because it was not her fault at all.

and also I don’t really know how the friendship between Josh and Hunter can be considered a friendship when Hunter does not seem like a good friend

so if you wanna read about scenes with OW‘s for half the book then sure leave this one

Also i did not like how Marley decided to tell him and his family all about her ex bf issues five minutes into meeting them then after hunter being rude for 200 pages or so and the one single time he is nice she tells him all about her family … no

There were some scenes that i did like just not enough to read this again.

I hated this book. there were too much scenes of the hero with other women while the heroine was only interested in him. (at like 65% of the book hunter still hooked up with two women together for like three days?!!)

Booktok deceived me again.

First: if you want to make the hero sleep with other women for most of the book, fade to black. I really don’t want to read the details of these encounters (that were even more interesting and detailed than the scenes with the heroine).

Second: Hunter was horrible. No redeemable qualities at all. He spend most of the book treating the heroine, his family and his supposed best friend like shit. Why are we supposed to like him? Just because he’s hot? No thanks.

Third: the heroine was a doormat. She never stood her ground and made him grovel as he should. She literally forgave him after 0.5 seconds. We prefer strong women that know their value, always. Also, she regretted leaving her life behind for a man, and guess what? She does it again.

Fourth: too many time jumps. We didn’t get a glimpse of how they became friends or started having feelings for each other. I couldn’t care less about them honestly.

This book is nothing but a red flag.

DNF @ 37%

the beginning is written like a 2013 wattpad book and the rest it was just the H being a total fuckboy ass who treated everyone like shit, I would’ve finished it but i kinda stopped caring.

it’s not that bad though, once they have a decent conversation I liked it, but he went back to being a dick and apparently still sleeps with OW until the 60% mark 🥴🥴 no thank you

if you like “H is a broken man, h comes and saves the day being his verbal punching bag” type of stories you’ll love this!

I read this book because of booktok... and well, that's where I went wrong.

I think there definitely could have been potential for this, but ultimately I was underwhelmed.

TW: drunk driving, alcohol abuse, loss of a loved one, mental health, body image and toxic family dynamics.
ADDITIONAL TW: mentions of trypophobia. As someone who actually has this phobia, this was extremely triggering, even though it was only briefly mentioned. It came out of no where and I don't think it added any value to the story, in my opinion.

This story is mainly told in dual pov, however there are 3 chapters told from an additional 2 POV from characters in this book. I felt that this was very choppy and it wasn't necessary to have the extra POV's.

The relationship between the MMC/FMC lacked the depth and chemistry that I would have wanted to read. Pair that with all of the time jumps, the odd pacing, and the quick ending - it really fell flat.

Hunter... okay, I know this is apparently based off of true events but I was not a fan of his character. Most of the book is about him and OW (other women).
There also wasn't enough groveling on his part.
I especially was not a fan of the drunk driving in this. It wasn't just a one time occurrence, it was a daily and intentional act that spanned 4 years. The fact that everyone in that town tolerated it?! And not once did the bartender take away his keys? That kind of behavior is not okay. I don't care if he is still grieving or whatever, putting your life AND other's lives in danger is not right.
And for him to then suddenly judge the man towards the end of the book for also driving drunk, felt very hypocritical.

Lastly, I was not a fan of the writing style that was used.
Nearly every single page had either a word or entire sentences italicized and it got to the point of being too distracting. I understand emphasis, but not everything needs to be so blatantly obvious.
There were also quite a few typos, grammatical errors, and general formatting mistakes.

Before reading it review: I CANNOT WAIT FOR THIS. as you can see I already gave it five stars I just know it's gonna be insanely good just by the tiktoks the author posted. Also, I call dips on Hunter Lane y'all

My review after reading actually reading the book :
Where to start... well, first things first I wasn't wrong when i rated this 5⭐
I thought I knew what to expect going into this, it but it kept surprising me, in a good way, and I absolutely loved it. Marley my girl was so strong, she's such a inspiration for not giving up, I don't know what I'd be doing if I had been in her case. Next, Hunter - that boy was something else in the beginning but his character developed was beautiful. I'm so proud of everything he overcame by one by, RL Hunter Lane, lemme give u a big ass hug because idc what u say u deserve it and need it bb. "God he was broken, Hunter Lane was so broken" *crying*
Next, I love their relationship sm oh my oh my. 😭😭😩😩 also the bookshelf scene... damn. "You said, you liked romance, didn't you Bambi?"
And the after bday scene... 👀🙈🙈
Overall this was so amazing and I had expectations but damn well this met them damn.

What hit me most was "Hunter chose life" i'm not crying, you are!!!!😭

"And I realized it was because I wanted to live. God, I've been trying to end it all for years. Four years that's all I thought about, all I wanted..because I haven't felt alive since. But here you are, baby. My lifeline."
AND JUST LIKE THAT RIP MY HEART bc once again my standards got higher, as it should.

*A few spoilers down below*

The way this author portrayed this book on her tik tok is way different than from what it actually is. She made it seem like he was in love with her from the beginning when all the quotes from her tik toks were from the like the last 90% of the book. The biggest thing was all the OW and explicit scenes with them… I seen a comment that the author made on tik tok that said there was NO other women drama and that the author didn’t like that stuff in books… uh hello basically the whole book is about that. The MMC was a total douche bag to the MC up until the end where like 20 minutes before he told her he loved her was having a 3sum with other women, then she just drops everything for him after he treated her like that?? I wished the author would have been clear about all the OW drama and not lie about it so people would buy and read the book. So disappointed..

okay but this book lowkey pissed me off :/ it was good like it IS good but cmon man… hunter (the mmc) just wasnt it. the whole book was basically just them hating each other and then not hating each other for like 2 chapters and then they go back to hating each other. the whole book he stays being a man whore and continues to sleep with other women. trust me guys he’s just gonna piss you off.

would have given this at least 2.5 if she ended up alone but🤷🏼‍♀️

all that advertising on tiktok and an editor didnt come forward to make the sacrifice of editing this. if they had wed be left with ten pages of worthwhile content maybe.

Hunt. Hunter. Hunty.
never have I come across a man that needs his ass kicked more. there was nothing about him that couldve redeemed him or his behavior the way that one instance of him blowing his gasket and him still choosing to go drive drunk after I actually wanted someone to get killed by him on the road maybe that wouldve made for a better book.

Marley stupid dumbass bitch I was rooting for you up until the end I was rooting for her I thought shed go on a ride on him and then get up and walk because did she not learn from her mistakes with her ex? as much as her mom is a control freak maybe Marley actually needed that it's like she cant ground herself into an spot. I wouldnt even be saying this if she hadnt made the decision and prepared to leave, if she hadnt planned on staying with her brother and worked on getting a job at her old place but that's the problem here she put in the effort and it was fruitful, it showed that hard work does get you somewhere and then she threw it all out the window for what? a man who showed up to apologize ONCE before she allowed him in, allowed him to change her mind. if he had maybe acted on his remorse and guilt this wouldve been different there was ZERO GROVELING. he was fucking drunk driving and he still refused to take responsibility over his actions because momma died in the same car as him well boo fucking hoo fucking loser ass he literally gives off pubic lice vibes hes sooo nasty and grotesque and to add onto this. he was fucking girls left and right and when I say it was graphic it was and it was nasty and hes not a smooth talker hes and fucking grade a loser this is as close a fictional man has gotten to men in real life

When I tell you I couldn't put it down.... I don't know how to move on. I know the author personally and I've never read such a touching story before. The fact that it's based off someone she has spoken about to me before is heart-wrenching but so beautifully written. What an amazing book.

I’m so mad a the author because she literally lied to me and some other readers…. And while reading a lot of other reviews We all are complaining about the same exact things. The OW fkn drama 🤮🤮🤮
At 65% and he still was fucking other girls now if I knew this before I would have never read the book. Because In TikTok she made it seem like a fkn love story about two broken people.
But the problem is that I asked her if this book had other women drama and she literally said : don’t worry none of that I hate it…….. so dear author thank you for lying.

I really saw a lot of potential in this book and despise all this I still loved hunter a little bit but omg he was one of the biggest manwhore I saw in all the books I read.
like we were at 65% in the book and this men was still having threesomes…….. fuck this I’m disappointed because I waited months to read this and I really trusted the author and the way I feel that she played me like girl at least say that this book literally have a lot of sex between the hero and other girls but don’t say that this book is safe for people like me who don’t read shit like this with a man that don’t know how to keep his dick in his pants.

Now for the heroine she was perfect and I really loved her and If we take away all the ow drama the book was literally perfect im sad she ruined it with her owns hands because him being with all these ow did nothing to bring more love or romance to the book. It just ruined everything I didn’t even enjoy them kissing and having sex because he went to see her only a couple of hours after he had a threesome.

Update after watching her live: she dare say that she don’t understand why people are saying her book have OW DRAMA….. like girl pls ow drama include a men that sleep with multiple girls on page when he feel something for the heroine…… anyway bye

It’s so awful. The author framed it as some deep story about grief and overcoming alcoholism that culminated in some great moral development. It was definitely not that.

At the beginning of the book, my thoughts were, “wow this guy is such an asshole that he’s going to have such a good character arc.” Nope. He’s just an asshole. A douchebag. A dick. It took me a week to finish this stupid book, and I think I read 80% in the first night in anticipation for Hunter Lane to become a good person, and it never came.

The author attempts some character development, but it feels so lazy. Whatever changes the character made happens within the span of a page. It’s like punctuated equilibrium but in the form of bad writing.

Nothing feels earned and none of it is convincing. The plot and the relationships especially. I hate the “I can fix you” mentality that plagues the heroine. It’s so exhausting. This book just does not deserve the amount of energy it takes to get through it.

Sorry to the real life Hunter Lane, but your friend portrayed you so incredibly poorly that I don’t want to be within 50 feet of you.

i brought this book as my only entertainment on a four hour boat ride and i stg if i wouldn’t have had episodes of one tree hill downloaded and ready to save me from the hell this book brought upon me- i would’ve started swinging.

this book was terrible. like actually terrible.

one thing i hate more than… peas. or the texture of broccoli. IS DOORMAT WOMEN AND HOE-ING MEN. guess what this book had? 😠 GUESS 😠

that’s right. a doormat woman and her disgusting, hoe ass mf boyfriend who LOVED talking about other women, fucking other women, having threesomes with other women (i kid you not, after like 200 pages we got to read about this man slinging his meat in his like fifth and sixth girl- did i tell you he likes threesomes 😑 of the week before minutes after showing up to seek comfort in the FMC because ”nobody will ever understand me”. NO YOU KNOW WHAT HUNTER NOBODY EVER FKN WILL BECAUSE YOU CANT HAVE A SINGLE CONVERSATION WITH PEOPLE BEFORE YOU SLEEP WITH THEM APPARENTLY. if this man would’ve gone to therapy he would’ve tried to sleep with the goddamn therapist, mark my words

i stopped reading around halfways (for the safety of the other hundreds of passengers on that boat ok) and that man was still describing in details about his encounters with other women whilst the FMC was just like 🥰😍🥰 its ok bby i kno ur troubled

… i just- i can’t anymore you guys. pls take booktok away from me

There was too much of ow scenes i mean i don't wanna read the smut between him and ow and god he treater her like shit and she should've gone back to nyc for like 200 pages he was an asshole then suddenly he becomes sweeter than honey that was just not it for me, I know he was sad and all that but that doesn't give him the right to treat her like that and the cops thing she did it to save his ass and instead of being thankful he was a total ass. I came here from all the tiktoks of the author i mean those tiktoks really made me wanna read it but when i'm actually reading the book wtf? not what i wanted.
