New to photography, this is a great book for beginners with the Rebel XS. Though some may have an aversion to being called a dummy for reading this book, it is written in plain language. The author spends as much time on the how-to as she does on the why . This is crucial for beginners like me.
I have also picked up the Digital Field Guide for the same camera by Charlotte Lowrie. Though there is much overlap between the two, the second is slightly more technical and in-depth, and assumes the reader wants to do more than snap family photos. Both are good, but the dummies version is geared for the beginner.
Not only is this book a perfect extended manual for Canon EOS 1000, but it is also a very nice introduction to basics of photography for a complete noob like me. All functions of the camera are dealt with in non-assuming manner, both from the technical perspective and how they can be used in practical terms. I would have given it top score, if it wasn't for the fact that only about two thirds of the book are commited to the camera itself. The remainder of the book deals with post-processing of the images on very basic level.
I have the Kindle version, which isn't the best format for viewing the photographs in this book. In spite of that, I found the book very useful for learning to use my new camera. It's easy to read and full of helpful advice.
