Simon Pierce is the most powerful man in Manhattan. My rival since the ninth grade. And now, my enemy with benefits.
Since the first day of high school, Simon and I have competed. Top grades? Simon wins. Better manners? Simon wins. Irresistible stare? Simon definitely wins. So when the bossy billionaire suggests an enemies with benefits arrangement-- I dive in headfirst. No feelings. No strings. No falling in love. It's perfect. In theory. Only the Simon who shares my bed isn't cutthroat and arrogant. He's passionate and tender. And pretty soon, I'm losing the one thing that matters: My heart.
Crystal Kaswell is the author of the Sinful Serenade series. She writes steamy new adult romance with flawed characters. She loves police procedurals, tea, and The Hunger Games series. She lives in Portland, OR with her husband.
Simon and Vanessa are childhood rivals. They were constantly competing for everything in school. They have also had feelings for each other at times hate and at times undeniable attraction. After his brother's death Simon made a promise to go for Vanessa and he's a man of his word. He and Vanessa start a sexual relationship that starts out just about sex. Their strong feelings from before grow and they both want to be with one another, but both have secrets of their pasts that may get in the way of a real relationship. I really liked this book. I loved that neither character was perfect, but they managed to complement each other. I was happy to see the brothers from the other books make an appearance and can't wait to read more about Opal and her story.
Ruthless Rival is the 3rd book in the Pierce Family Series and the enemies to lovers story of Simon Pierce and Vanessa Moyer. If you have read the previous books in the series, you know a little about who Simon and Vanessa are and who they are to each other. Simon has has always been a mystery to me and I couldn’t have been more thrilled that his book was next in the series.
As a warning, this book talks about domestic violence victims and eating disorders so if those are triggers for you please read at your own risk.
Simon Pierce is the oldest sibling of the Pierce Family and the CEO of Pierce Industries, which he runs with his brothers (Adam and Liam). He has been the backbone that has held the family together after the tragedy that wrecked their family last year. His intense and unreadable demeanor have him living up to his nicknames of the Prince of Darkness and ruthless in the boardroom.
Vanessa Moyer is the oldest sibling of the Moyer Family and the CEO of a non-profit that helps domestic abuse victims and families. Despite her being haunted by her past, her devotion in helping those that need it gives her the strength to power through.
Simon and Vanessa have been rivals ever since they were in high school together and now as adults, their rivalry still thrives. Both are from prominent families so their circles intertwine causing them to see each other frequently. They both have had a love-hate relationship for each other and the tension has lasted for 14 years. So when Simon decides to act on the promise he made Bash, the tension snaps and their rivalry turns into something special. Their relationship is full of steam and spiciness and results in them facing the hard truths of their past that they haven’t admitted to anyone, even themselves.
I love how you get to see a different side of Simon, especially when he is with Opal. And by the way I love Opal! I hope she gets her own book! She is a combination of all the Pierce men in the flesh and it’s the first time in the series that we as readers get to know who Opal is as a person and how she came into the Pierce brothers’s lives.
Simon and Vanessa’s story is not at all what I expected and I love that about Crystal’s writing. You think you know what to expect, but then she surprises you with the real and rawness of life with a twist and it just moves you. It’s also filled with the playful banter, summertime in New York, Liam’s ridiculous table conversations, and spicy food and tea references that you know is a trademark of the author’s.
I couldn’t put this book down and I love how this series is based on a family so as readers we get to see how their life and relationships progress with each book. As a fan of the author’s, I recommend this book as well as the series. I can't wait to see who is in the next book and see what's next for the Pierce Family.
This is another addition to the Pierce Family Series and I must say the series just gets better and better. What could be more interesting than an enemy with benefits? Simon and Vanessa have been rivals since high school and both are strong personalities. Both have a lot of emotional scars and deal with guilt and abuse. This is an extremely well written story that is emotional. Heartwarming at times and heartbreaking at other. One night of passion with out strings blossoms into more. A slow burn romance as they each begin to see the hidden side of each other. You will enjoy this one. I read an arc via the author and voluntarily chose to review it.
We finally get Simons story and it was everything I anticipated it would be! I’m a huge fan of this author and she didn’t disappoint , her writing is amazing I love her characters and her added playful banter and heat but also the emotions the darkness which made this a wonderful reading experience I love this family so much and I’m hoping we get a story for Opal ! I highly recommend this book it is a stand-alone but for better enjoyment I’d read the whole series.

Love, love, love the characters and the story draws you in with hope, doubts, and truth.. I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
This was a good read. Vanessa and Simon grew up together. They had always been attracted to each other. Now as adults they have a no strings attached relationship. Of course they end up falling in love by the end. Thankfully everything works out and they get their happy ending.
Simon and Vanessa have wanted each other for years but they were rivals in a sense. However, now they were willing to take a chance. It was supposed to be one night. Yet neither could forget how good it was between them. One day Vanessa gets a surprise when she arrives home a battered woman and her baby were waiting for her. She rushes them up to her apartment and offers them shelter until they can figure a more permanent solution for them. Things starts to heat up between Vanessa and Simon as they share things about their family life that no one knows about. Just as Vanessa is getting comfortable with Simon a man that is being somewhat confrontational to her causes her to see another side of Simon. This also has her realizes that her house guest isn't safe. Will she be able to get her guest to safety? Will she give Simon another chance?
This is an amazing story that once I started it I couldn't put it down. This is a well written and very entertaining story. I would recommend this book to any book lover.

Well I couldn’t wait for Simons book and I wasn’t disappointed. Simon and Vanessa have known each other since they were children, always fighting for the top spot and trying to be the best. Underneath all of this is a burning attraction that will set fire to your kindle. Both of them have been through hell and back and seek something to soothe them. Can one night be enough? Can friends with be if it’s so the job? Or were they meant for each other? If you’re into enemies to lovers and a steamy read then this is the book for you
I have read every Crystal Kaswell book and I have loved them all. How she manages to make every book better than the last, I will never understand, but she does. I was unable to put this book down. Simon and Vanessa each have their own issues, but they find a way. Loved it and I can’t wait to get more Crystal Kaswell.
Wow! I loved the first two books in this series and thought no one could better Liam, but Simon and Vanessa are something else! The exploration of grief and brain chemistry was sublime, as well as the exploration into domestic and family violence, done respectfully and with great insight.
Im großen und ganzen ein gutes Buch, allerdings zieht es sich sehr zum Lesen. Ich muss sagen, dass die ersten zwei Bücher besser waren und das Erste das Beste.

ABOUT THE PIERCE FAMILY:
This is the third book about the Pierce siblings, and the series keeps getting better. The first book, Broken Beast, is Adam and Danielle’s Beauty and the Beast-inspired billionaire romance. Liam and Briar’s banter-filled fake engagement story follows in book two. Here Simon and Vanessa give in to their attraction to one another after years of rivalry.
The Pierces may live like royalty, but their fortunes haven’t insulated them from the heartbreak associated with grief. They have been beset by a series of losses, and it never gets easier. This series shows the family as they grieve and stumble upon the inspiration to find happiness once again. They grow from their pain, and although changed, they find strength and beauty in moving on with life.
Simon, thirty-two, and Adam, twenty-nine, are the serious-minded brothers. Liam, twenty-seven, is fun-loving and incorrigible much like Sebastian had been. Adam and Bash had been close despite their opposite personalities. Simon and Liam, however, always seem to be at odds. They all work at Pierce Industries, a tech company, in NYC. One of their specialties is cyber security.
A few years ago, the brothers learned that they had a younger half-sister. Opal had lost her own mother and learned that she had four brothers – and a large inheritance that would one day be hers – when she turned sixteen. She moved in with Simon and became the Park Avenue Princess almost overnight. Having just graduated from high school and turned eighteen, she wants desperately to be all grown up, but Simon’s overprotective leanings have her rather frustrated. Personality-wise, Opal is bold and obnoxious, much like Liam, and like Bash had been as well.
The Pierce mansion, with its fairy tale aura, sits about three hours outside of NYC, far removed from society. The Pierce brothers were raised there in a life of privilege, but their wealth did nothing to insulate them from pain. Simon, Adam, Liam, and Sebastian didn’t have their mother around growing up, and they later lost their father as well. That was fifteen years ago. Patricia, who runs the house, did her best to manage the boys growing up and has a deep affection for them still. She is the closest they have to a mother figure. After their father’s death, Preston Charles, a family friend, had become a father figure. Since the loss of Sebastian a year ago, however, nothing has been the same. IN THIS BOOK:
As the story opens, it is August in NYC. Two months have passed since Preston’s son, Harrison – Liam’s close friend – married mean girl Lee.
Simon Pierce, thirty-two, is a control freak with a reputation for being bossy, cold, and demanding. Routine is his friend and he doesn’t shirk responsibility. His life revolves around work and his family, with little time for anything else. He once envisioned getting married and becoming a father, but that idea somehow got lost along the way. He isn’t known to be warm and fuzzy. He is aloof and doesn’t feel emotions like most people do. He doesn’t date. Instead, he has monogamous arrangements to fulfill his needs. He never gives false impressions about what those relationships mean to him, but it doesn’t stop the women from complaining once things end.
Simon was small when his mother died, and his father died about fifteen years ago. As the oldest sibling, he took over responsibility for his family even though he was just a teen himself. He didn’t always appreciate the help that Preston Charles offered because he relishes control. He has served as protector of the family for years now. When their half-sister Opal entered their lives three years ago, it was Simon who served as a surrogate father to her. He never anticipated that she would bring so much change into his life, but she has him wrapped around her finger. Still, he feels his failure with Bash keenly, and a year after his death, Simon is still trying to find a path forward. Bash deserves justice, but holding Cole Fitzgerald accountable remains an elusive goal.
Bash had seemed foolish when he fell hard for Celine, a married older woman, and Simon had doubts about that relationship. Bash was a romantic; he embraced love easily. He wanted that for Simon, too. He had insisted Simon had it within himself if only he allowed himself the chance. And the years of hungry looks Simon gave Vanessa, Bash observed, gave away that hidden potential. Bash had called him a coward. Simon had given in and promised to give it a try with Vanessa – just one night – but he expects those pent-up frustrations to be sated afterward. Simon is a man of his word. As the anniversary of Bash’s death arrives, he summons all his courage to fulfill that promise.
Vanessa Moyer, almost thirty-two, likes to be in control. She is strong and independent, and a competitive instinct drives her success. She runs her own nonprofit. Her organization helps victims of domestic abuse, a topic near and dear to her. Memories of her biological father’s abuse of her mother still have a powerful hold on her. Her mother had eventually gotten away and remarried a wonderful man, and Vanessa considers herself fortunate to have been adopted and raised by him. She has lived a life of privilege, although she has always felt like a bit of an outsider. As a black woman, her white father is routinely referenced by otherwise well-meaning strangers as her adopted father, reinforcing her sensitivity and reminding her of where she came from.
Those insecurities, combined with an inability to trust men as a result of witnessing her mother’s abuse, led to some issues in high school. She dealt with them, but relationships remain a problem. Unfortunately, there are a lot of men that cower from successful women. Still, she has dated, had some convenient arrangements, and had even been engaged to an admittedly wonderful man at one time. But her mind is perhaps her worst enemy, working to scare her away from lasting happiness with a man. She sees potential violence in the face of even the most gentle men. Things got bad again when her mom had cancer, and although her mother is now in remission, Vanessa recognizes that she needs to address her problem to avoid spiraling.
Simon Pierce has infuriated Vanessa since their freshman year of high school. Their intense competition might have helped make them better students, but it was a disappointment that he never kissed her despite all those steamy looks. As the CEO of Pierce Industries, he attends many galas and social events, and they generally see one another a few times each month. They have been family friends as well, and with the recent marriage of Harrison Charles to her sister Lee, those ties are stronger than ever. Regardless, there is no reason for the status quo to change after so many years of lost opportunities, so when Simon propositions her for a no-strings night of passion, it catches her completely off guard.
Simon and Vanessa begin with one night, but it soon leads to more. They both have some issues to address if there is any hope of their attraction transforming into a healthy relationship, but those years of untapped feelings buy them some time. The past resurfaces unexpectedly, linking them yet dividing them, too. They have a few ups and downs, but they eventually find a happy for now ending.
Don’t forget to download the extended epilogue via the link at the back of the book!
Opal’s story with Max follows in book two, Tempting Teacher.
Wow! Simon and Vanessa’s story tackles some serious issues – abuse, guilt, grief, and unhealthy coping mechanisms. Simon struggles with the guilt of his failure as the head of his family. He did not recognize the danger Bash was in, and Adam paid the price as well. He survived but was permanently disfigured. The investigation that followed the accident consumed him, and the lack of justice continues to plague him. His guilt and search for answers have done his a real disservice, unfortunately. He has selflessly attended to others while neglecting his own needs. And though he might be ready for love, he must still process his grief.
In her youth, Vanessa bore witness to her mother’s abuse by a father she loved. As an adult, the scars persist. She copes by constructing a carefully controlled life, but in a way, that control helps her to avoid facing her fears. Her problems are deep-seated. While both she and Simon have fears to face, Vanessa’s is more urgent. Simon might fear opening up to love, but Vanessa fears her physical safety. Simon’s three years of functioning as Opal’s surrogate father have accidentally prepared him for a relationship with Vanessa. Opal is a handful, and he opened up to her, patiently guiding her along the way.
Simon and Vanessa’s story of years-long rivals-turned-lovers is deep and raw. These two powerful figures thrive on control, but in one another, they find the safety to let their guards down. Their rivalry has inspired them to be better, to work harder, and it feels like a natural progression to take that to the next level. Their story is about family. It is about grief, guilt, and the arduous process of learning to trust again. The story is well-written. The plot is fairly simple. The characters are carefully crafted. They are three-dimensional and real. The story is told in first person. The POV alternates between Simon and Vanessa. I rate this book 4.5 stars.

The latest book in the Pierce Family Series from Crystal Kaswell continues with Simon and Vanessa.
Simon and Vanessa have always been rivals since the time they were kids in high school. Always competing with each other, trying to one up the other. Simon has always won, but the one thing he could never win was Vanessa.
Simon has since grown up and is now one of the most powerful men in Manhattan. Running a cybersecurity corporation. The Prince of Darkness. That’s what Vanessa has always called him, teasing him about how he has all the money in the world.
Vanessa runs a non-profit and is damn good at it. Simon likes to tease her that she wants to save the world. Maybe she does, but she also wants Simon.
The two have always been attracted to each other but being family friends and rivals, neither has ever acted upon it. And tonight at the fundraiser they are both attending, it appears they both feel it’s time to cross that line. Simon admits to making a promise. A promise that he’d man up and tell Vanessa how he felt about her. Since those years long ago in high school.
Vanessa takes him up on his offer and the two embark on a “rival relationship”.
Simon made that promise to his now dead brother, Bash. Get out of his comfort zone, do things that will make him happy rather than just doing what is expected. Live life with color. Simon is trying and it’s scaring the hell out of him.
But that’s nothing compared to the fear in Vanessa. As much as she wants to explore this thing with Simon, the secret from her past is keeping her from going all in. She also knows that there is something that Simon is keeping from her.
The push pull of their relationship and the secret she’s keeping in her apartment could cost her everything, including her reputation. How can her secrets and Simon’s allow them to both have happiness.
Crystal Kaswell weaves an intricate story that keeps you glued to each word waiting for the next chapter. A must read for fans of hers and those who want a story that will keep them on their toes. A stand alone or part of the series. I highly recommend the series.
Ruthless Rival is third installment in the Pierce Family series. Two people who had crush on each from high school but never acted on it instead they were rivals in everything. Vanessa and Simon both lives a control life because of tragedy and trauma from their past. Because of this they allow anyone close. Simon only engage into no strings one night stand hook ups. Simon had watched Bash pursue love and fell in with a married woman and he had thought Bash had lost his mind. Vanessa is a beautiful tenacious woman whose life driven by control. Her mom is domestic violence survivor so the opens and run a non-profit organization that supports victims like her mom you to be. Simon decided to keep his promise to Bash and preposition Vanessa since he had always had a crush on her. He proposed the same arrangement as he did with the others. However, one night turned in two and the next thing know they were in a full blown relationship. The man that was cold and stoic started to feel for someone more than his family and work. This rival turned lovers story was beautiful, raw, sweet, and swoon worthy. The characters sizzles off pages once they get together. The story was easy to follow and engaging. The author discussed real world situations. It contains domestic violence abuse, pain, survival, guilt, grief, losses, rivalry, family trust issues, insecurities, and love. The story was well written with great storyline.

Vanessa has been competing against Simon Pierce for as long as she can remember as teens she had hidden her true feelings for him. It’s been over a decade since they last crossed paths, she is now a woman in control of her life and if there is one thing that she needs it is control but Simon is a man and one that she has always wanted, they agree to keep physical especially after her childhood the walls that she ha surround her heart are nearly insurmountable but with Simon there has always been more between them as much as she hates to admit that even to herself. Will Vanessa ever reveal her true feelings for Simon, will she really be able to walk away from what they have together or will she finally give her heart to the one she has always wanted?
Simon became the head of the Pierce family when he was too young, losing some of his years raising brothers only to discover a sister they all had known nothing about. Simon had to be in control or felt that things would fall apart around his ears. When Vanessa re-enters his life the rivalry that they have always shared came back into full force but with that so did the attraction and feelings that he had always hidden did too only this time there was an amicable solution or so he thought. Vanessa had always been different to him and finding out about her past he knew that he was never going to let her go. Will he and Vanessa find their happily ever after or will their control issues be too much to overcome?
This was the perfect story for Simon and Vanessa, Simon is cold and distant other than to those he loves and whether he realizes it or not that is how he has always treated her, she is dealing with her past the only way that she knows by being calm and collected. You can’t not enjoy their connection and banter and I for one am loving the couple and the series so far. 5* Read
Vanessa and Simon were rivals in their youth, but their rivalry hid their true feelings for each other. Years later, Simon's life revolves around his family and the family business. Simon is considered bossy, cold, and distant. Bash watched Simon cast longing looks at Vanessa for years and makes Simon promise him that if he died, Simon would try with Vanessa. Vanessa is a strong, independent woman who runs a non-profit that helps victims of domestic abuse. Vanessa struggles with insecurities from her childhood that have shaped her adulthood. Vanessa is surprised when Simon admits he has always wanted her and wants to spend the night together. Vanessa says yes to Simon's proposition. After spending an explosive night together, Simon and Vanessa can't stop thinking about each other. As Simon and Vanessa spend more time together and get to know each other, they start confiding their fears and secrets. Can Vanessa overcome her trust issues and trust Simon to be the man she could spend her life with? Can Simon move past his guilt of not being able to protect Bash? What happens when a woman and child show up at Vanessa's residence looking for shelter from her abusive husband? What happens when Simon realizes who has been staying with Vanessa? When Simon threatens another man, will Vanessa back away in fear? Can Vanessa and Simon work through their issues and find their happily ever after? I loved Ruthless Rival by Crystal Kaswell! Simon and Vanessa are a fantastic couple who bring out the best in each other. I love the interaction between Simon and his siblings. Love how Vanessa and her sister, Lee, are always there for each other. I highly recommend getting Ruthless Rival by Crystal Kaswell. I received an ARC copy of this book, and I am voluntarily leaving my honest review.
Ruthless Rival is book three in Crystal Kaswell’s Pierce Family Series. Simon and Vanessa’s story is an interconnected standalone although out of the three, this one could be read most on its own. This book is a bit tricky for me to review, I’m conflicted. Just like the previous two books the back and forth between the characters can get a bit confusing, sometimes it’s hard to distinguish who’s talking. I was excited to read this one because I loved Simon and Vanessa in the previous books. Ruthless Rival is supposed to be an enemies to lovers story but I didn’t feel there was a whole lot to the enemies portion. Yes, they are rivals but I didn’t get the friction I would expect in a true enemies to lovers book. I was also expecting more revelations with the Bash and Adam accident storyline. We don’t learn much more about that but we get a whammy of a plot twist that I wasn’t expecting. I’m looking forward to seeing where that goes but I was disappointed that we are still in the dark about the accident. Hopefully the next book goes into more detail or that we can maybe get a prequel novella to get us caught up. I hate to say it but I think Bash is my favorite character so far in this series, he definitely overshadows the main characters. I did love Simon and Vanessa together. Their chemistry is over the top and kindle melting. I was pleasantly surprised by the activities they enjoy.. it’s true that still waters run deep and Simon and Vanessa’s interests work really well together. Simon is not nearly as cold and unfeeling as we were led to believe and we learn why he’s the way he is. There are quite a few plot points that could be triggering and I was not expecting. Overall, I enjoyed the book and the series is worth the read. This one did fall a bit flat for me but not enough that I wouldn’t recommend reading the series.
I received this book for Free to Give My True & Honest Review.
No idea why it took me a long as it did, as The Eldest Pierce Brother Simon, whose been blaming himself for Bash's death & has only really looked out for their half unexpected Sister Opal whom we met in the first book of the Trilogy. And here we are a month after Vanessa Moyer's half Sister Lee whom we saw marry their adoptive brother Harrison, Liam's best friends during their school time, in The Playboy Prince. But during the work I hadn't realised that Simon was the actual Oldest blood related brother of The Pierce family. But the strong pull Simon & Vanessa have towards each other is strong & their strings get pulled even more so after they give in to their chemistry & Vanessa opening up about the start of her & her mother's life with her biological father before her mother has the strength to mice forward & fall in love with a business man whom was friends with both Preston & The Pierce's father. And Vanessa is now CEO for an Abusive Charity & that's when Celine comes to Vanessa's home to ask for help but it takes that 1 night at a charity do when Cole Fitzgerald comes up to Vanessa & the way Fitzgerald was handling her makes Simon see RED & that drops things from the way Her & Simon's relationship was going but also makes her realise whom Celine & Her Baby Seb is & then Simon meets them & he can't do anything to help apart for that 1 night which could be the end of his & Vanessa's time together. And the ONLY thing he knows what to do is what Adam did... Go back to the family home, but for how long & will Vanessa be able to forgive him after him showing a different side of him....
Ruthless Rival is a stand-alone in the Pierce Family Series. Books should be read in order for max enjoyment. Having read the entire series I’ve been waiting for Simon’s story. The eldest Pierce in all his controlled glory. Crystal states in her author’s note he needed a strong equal and after reading his and Vanessa’s story, I agree. She is the Ying to his Yang 100%. Simon is here to fulfill all of Vanessa’s desires and fantasies. She just has to let him in.
Book is told thru dual first person perspective.
Vanessa runs a nonprofit. She doesn’t trust love, her past has tainted the view, and created a deep seeded need for control.
Simon Pierce, runs a cybersecurity company with his family and has been raising his half-sister Opal for the last few years. Keeps his relationships casual.
They have know each other for fifteen years. Their families run in the same circles. But, there has always been an underlying rivalry, at least on Vanessa’s part, Simon has always been interested in her.
Before his brother Bash died he challenged Simon to approach Vanessa. And, the night he does opens thoughts and desires neither one was prepared for.
When their families catch wind of their connection the meddling begins. But, Simon and Vanessa have already set terms to their relationship. Those terms will become blurred the more they spend time with one another.
Vanessa’s past has a real hold on her. Her work with victims of abuse call on all of her strength. She has never let herself have needs.
Ruthless Rivals is the third book in Crystal Kaswell's The Pierce Family series and is Simon and Vanessa's enemies to lovers story. Simon and Vanessa have been rivals for as long as they can remember. Always in competition with each other and trying to one up the other. At a party before Simon's brother Bash died, after seeing how Simon looks longingly at Vanessa for years now, he made a promise to Bash that he'd open his heart to Vanessa in whichever way he saw fit. Whether that was romantically or just physical, he had to give her and him a chance at something more. Which leads to him offering her a one time arrangement, one night and then they go back to being rivals. But that isn't what happened, one taste wasn't enough for either of them. So a rivals with benefits is all both of them can offer. Vanessa has a painful past and will not let anyone close enough to hurt her and Simon is reluctant to let anyone see the real him and to let himself be vulnerable so he can fall in love. "He might be afraid of love or intimacy or connection, but he's not afraid of falling in love with a monster." So what happens when this relationship turns into more than just a physical one? When feelings get involved? And will Vanessa and Simon be able to move on from their demons holding them back and finally be together? Read Ruthless Rival now to find out! I really enjoyed Ruthless Rival and I cannot wait to see what Crystal does next in this series. I received an arc of Ruthless Rival and I am voluntarily leaving my review.
I really enjoyed this story. Although I couldn’t really relate to either main character, I liked seeing how each of them grew throughout the book. I always enjoy being able to see both perspectives. Sometimes I felt like there was too much inner dialogue, but it definitely gave insight into each main character & where they were coming from. Both have some heavy/sensitive situations that they have experienced in the past & bring into the relationship, which have to be dealt with. This says it is a standalone, but I would say that it would definitely help fill in gaps if you read the first 2 books. It can totally be read & understood without reading the other books, but the other books give you a deeper meaning to some of the situations that Simon goes through. Sometimes I had a hard time figuring out which character was speaking, so I had to pay really close attention in some spots & even go back & figure it out. There were very few typos, though, which I always appreciate. It definitely shows that the author wants to give the best reader experience. I hate cliffhangers & am happy that this ended in a HEA/HFN (Happy For Now). The ending seemed a bit rushed, though. FYI, if HOT-HOT love scenes & cursing offend you, this book is not for you. I hope that the author does a book about Opal & that we’ll get to see a HEA for all of the siblings. This honest review is given voluntarily after receiving an advanced reader copy.
Simon and Vanessa have been competitive with each other since high school. But secretly they’ve always wondered what would happen if they spent a night together. Time goes on and they occasionally see each other in their adult lives. A remembered promise has Simon asking for that one night with Vanessa. They thought that would be it, they were wrong. What started out as a one time thing turns into a decided upon arrangement, but not soon after, real feelings start creeping in. Things seem to be going well but information from the past surfaces that could threaten their happily ever after. Will they be able to work through it? Or will the past be too much and tear them apart? Find out in Ruthless Rival. I love the enemies/rivals to lovers trope so I was hooked immediately. I really enjoyed learning about Vanessa’s background and how she is happy to be where she is now but she still sometimes feels out of place. We got more insight into how Simon feels after losing Bash and having Opal living with him now. I love the universe Crystal has created and how the characters are connected in different ways. Simon and Vanessa have a lot to overcome, both with their own issues and other things that come up, but watching their relationship unfold was a treat. Crystal is doing great work with the Pierce brothers. I’m super excited for Opal’s book! I received an advanced copy and am voluntarily leaving my review.
Ruthless Rival (The Pierce Family Book 3) by Crystal Kaswell is a brilliant billionaire romance read full of love and lust that leads to the truth behind secrets and ultimate healing. Simon and Vanessa have a long history and their story almost feels like a second chance. In their youth, the rivalry was all consuming and hid their true feelings. A decade + later, the rivalry still exists but only in their minds until Simon follows through on a promise made to his younger brother. I loved Simon’s internal dialogue and thoughts about Bash, it’s so sad and yet also heartwarming. In previous books of this series, Simon was always strict, stoic and unmoving. But as his own story unfolds, readers get to see the real Simon and it’s all thanks to Vanessa. Vanessa is all warmth, beauty and light even though she is struggling. As a survivor, she is extremely guarded and ever cautious, but Simon makes her want more despite her fears. Overall, Simon and Vanessa make perfect sense together and their story brings about some closure for the Pierce Family as well as for each of these characters individually. Love gives them the strength to grieve, heal, allow themselves to love and make a promise made lightly, true in the truest and long lasting sense, the promise of a HEA. I read an ARC of this book and voluntarily share my review.
I’m not going to lie, I had trouble with this book and I was so looking forward to Simon’s story. The Pierce family is a very rich family recovering from the youngest brothers death. And, they’ve lost their parents and learned of a love child younger sister. I loved the other two brothers’ stories and expected a lot from Simon’s. I felt he had a great story to be told and it was hard to read, disjointed and sometimes I couldn’t follow who was “speaking”. Simon has been pining for Vanessa since they were younger and she seems to have a love hate relationship with him, but the chemistry is off the charts. They have a good relationship and a lot of back story that I just felt was never fully brought out. An eating disorder was hinted at, but never explored. Simon’s guilt over his deceased brother wasn’t fully brought out from his perspective, the aha moment for Vanessa again fell flat, it didn’t work for me that everything just fell into place. I’m still hoping that there is one more story to be told with the sister and it puts everything together. Read the other books first, they are so worth it!. I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
Simon and Vanessa both competed since high school, while they secretly lusted a after each other but neither of them had the courage to act on their feelings. Now they are older, many things have changed in their lives with one exception, their attraction for each other. Based on a promise he made to his brother, Simon decided to take the plunge to remedy all the pent desire between him and Vanessa, They both thought, all they wanted was a enemies with benefits arrangement. However, when they got a taste of each other, All bets were off. They realised the chemistry between them was undeniable and there was no use fighting the inevitable. There are obstacles though, they both had a lot of personal issues to work through individually, before they can truly be free to give their heart to each other. The story has wonderful characters and a very creative plot that was beautifully written. It held my interest from start to finish. This is a wonderful addition to the Pierce Family saga. So far, each book gets better and I have no doubt it will continue. I can't wait for the next one.
I received a ARC copy and this is my voluntarily review.
This is the third book in the series and the best one yet, in my opinion! Simon is the oldest Pierce sibling and is basically a surrogate father to his young sister and the head of the family since his father’s death. He was still a kid when his dad died and basically held his brother’s together. But he hasn’t really processed what happened with Bash. He hasn’t truly grieved. Vanessa has had her own difficult past. From growing up with domestic violence to eating disorders, she has her own emotional baggage that’s pretty much colored every part of her life. She finds it difficult to trust. They have a shared past. One where they’re rivals, but also a bit of young love/lust. Could they be the right person to help them each heal and move forward? This book was emotional, heartfelt, and sexy! I loved the banter between Vanessa and Simon! They just seemed to fit like puzzle pieces! Liam was outrageous and I couldn’t help but laugh at his antics! Once again, Crystal Kaswell has written about an important topic and handled it with grace and care! I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader Copy of this book.
I was excited to finally be able to read Simon's story. Plus I was also glad that the theme was different from the previous two in this series. I always loved how much Simon protected and cared for his family. I love how he will pretty much do anything to keep those who he loves safe. From what we see of him in the previous two books it looked like he had it all together but of course not everything is what meets the eye.
Vanessa seems at first to be a strong women who loves to help others in need. It's hard to tell sometimes that she is fighting her own demons because she hides it so well. I enjoyed how Simon and her just clicked and loved the chemistry between the two of them. It was fun getting to know their past and seeing them slowly get closer. Always helping eachother even when they didn't realize.
Overall I have to say I really enjoyed this book. Definitely ones of those ones that keeps you drawn in the whole time. Simon is definitely my favorite out of the three brothers. I am hoping we get Opal's story next. I would love to see who she ends up with.
Ruthless Rival, book 3 in the Pierce Family book series by Crystal Kaswell, is full of intrigue, romance, and heat! Pierce is the oldest brother of the four Pierce brothers. The younger brother's tragic death in a car wreck that was not an accident affected each brother's life. Ruthless Rival is a romance between childhood friends that always compete and tries to best each other. A magnetic attraction existed between the two that neither gave into despite the rivalry. When Simon attended one of Vanessa's charity events, they decided to give in to their primal urges with a "one and done" one-night stand. Ruthless Rival deals with grief, domestic violence, PTSD, and overwhelming anxiety. Vanessa is an "I must be in control" empathic CEO of a Domestic Violence Foundation. While always in control, Simeon oversees the family cyber security business. The two clash and spark flames as they morph into each other's guilty pleasure. Layers of each unfold as they discover each's nuances. Surprises and plot twists keep the reader guessing what is coming next. Great read! I love all of Crystal Kaswell's stories! Another must-read to add to your collection of good reads.
Simon, oh Simon... I knew this man was going to be special and I was right. What I wasn't prepared for was Vanessa almost stealing his thunder because she was a force but not in the way that I would normally picture. These two both like their control but seeing them willing to compromise was even better than seeing them battle for supremacy. Their intellectual back and forth was amazing. In fact, that might be my favorite part of this series so far, because those deep conversations where the characters get to know each other, and I get to know them in turn, is so refreshing. I feel lime I'm a part of the discovery and it gets me that much more invested.
Great family bantering again. Opal might usurp Liam with her openness and one liners. I laughed at her interactions with Simon in this book. This book also had a twist I didn't see coming. I hope , eventually, that it gets a resolution because it really deserves it.
Looming forward to Opals story next. I highly recommend this book and interconnected standalones. This Pierce family is one of my all-time favorite s from this other, and in general.
