Code Name: Mockingbird by Kristen Painter
Short paranormal romance mystery.
A put-out-to-pasture vampire Hunter becomes a detective and protector for her new neighbor, a vampire.

Cute, clean, intriguing. Add in a cat that seems to be a little bit more and you get an entertaining paranormal escape for a couple of hours.

🎧 I listened to the audiobook version narrated by B.J. Harrison who most most of this authors books. The performance is wonderful with clear differences in characters and expressions of emotion. He does speak much slower than a Midwest conversation would happen so I listened to this at a speed of 1.5.

I've read a bunch of stuff by Painter, and this one was a good one. Though it is super short, yet still took me 3 days to finish.

Story stars a 56 year old forcibly retired from her job because of her age. Because of the secrecy of her job and company, she can't sue anyone for age discrimination. She didn't work for someone like the CIA or the like, she worked for an organization that hunted those things people don't know are real. Like, say, vampires. Rogue, killing type vampires.

She comes from money, so she's just bored, not frantically thinking of how to feed herself. Bored standing around her mansion puttering around, trying to think of what to do with herself that day. Then she spots a cat, a cat with a collar and tag. Someone's cat has gone missing. So, that's what she'll do - return the cat. That should take, oh, five minutes (or, possibly more) of her time.

The cat turns out to be connected to one of her neighbors, who turns out to be a vampire. One thing leads to another and she does not immediately stab him to death for being a vampire (back to part where she hunted rogue killing type vampires, not necessarily vampires wandering around looking for their lost pets).

Oddly enough, that specific vampire had been working up to visit Bess because he wanted her help. Someone has been trying to kill him, or, at the very least, attempting to scare him to leave his house.

Bess is bored, she likes the cat, and, well, she takes the job.

Story then proceeds down the path of Bess investigating, and flirting with the vampire.

Oh and that whole retirement thing is confusing. Sure, at some point people need to come in from the field, take a desk job (and they did offer one, she didn't want that), because, if no other reason, people decay and stuff. Over time. Or something. Of course it depends on the person. Tom Brady compared to a 22 year old who retires after three seasons in the NFL because of injury issues . . .. Not everyone will work into their 40s, and not everyone will be forced from the NFL after a small period in the NFL. 56 . . . eh, I don't know. Course Bess isn't human and 56 isn't exactly the same type of age for her kind (not that it ever was explicitly stated how long her kind lived, or, for that matter, was her kind elaborated upon). Eh, whatever.

Nice to see story with cat. Liked seeing a main character in their 50s (though unknown what 50 means for someone of her kind, for example technically speaking, Grogu ("baby Yoda" from Mandalorian) was 50 when the series started, and was treated like a baby).

When all you know is vampire hunting, what do you do when you suddenly find yourself retired? Well, if you're Bess, you throw caution to the wind and end up playing protector to a vampire. Which is pretty much the exact opposite of what her previous job entailed. But so it goes. Sometimes you need to make big life changes to figure things out.

A vampire, a cat, and a woman who needs a little direction. Bess might not have been trained to be a vampire protector, but she has smarts and skills and she's a tiny bit invested in keeping Callum alive. Tiny bit. Seeing as how he's the first thing she's been interested in since her abrupt dismissal. Err, sorry. Her early retirement.

Regardless, Bess steps in and does what she's asked to do and it turns out she doesn't mind it one bit that her new employer is a vamp. *thumbs up*

A retired vampire hunter, a vampire with a problem, and a cat with a distinct lack of manners - short but cute paranormal romance read. I really need to get back to reading more of Kristen Painter's stuff.

This novella was a perfect palette cleanser for me. It was cute and sweet and intriguing with a dash of romance. Honestly, I was hooked the second I learned this was set in Maine and there was a Maine Coon cat. I hope this becomes a full series!

A fun read. The solution to the mystery was fairly obvious from about 60% of the way through, but I don't expect anything too complicated in a (very short) novella and the focus was really more on the characters.

As exciting as Nocturne Valley but not as good as Shadowvale

Too short! Good character development, and exciting plot, but it was over too soon. I hope she continues with this series, I like that the main characters are more mature - not just teens having adventures. Hopefully someone will update her website as well as this book doesn't receive a mention. I was hoping to find info on the next in the series....

2022 bk 68. Actually a novella, at 97 pages this is a good introduction to two characters - a retired hunter of evil supernaturals and a vampire man who loves his family. When someone threatens the vampire, he goes in search of a bodyguard and finds one at the neighboring estate. With the assistance of Murphy the cat, the pair solve the mystery. I would like to see more of the characters - perhaps visiting Painter's favorite town in Georgia?

I was hooked right away. Reading while having Covid probably wasn’t a good idea because no matter how exhausted my body was, I just couldn’t stop reading. I loved Bess. She is sort of down and out because ARROW forced her into retirement. She is thinking over the mundane and how she will miss the excitement when a cat appears at her door. Calling the number on the tag opens a whole new can of worms. Her life is fixing to take a turn for the fabulous kick butt woman that she is. The cat owner is hunky. Idk how Kristen does it but she keeps you in the moment. I hope she will write a series about this street and those who live on it.

I really, really liked this story & hope that Kristen can be persuaded to continue this storyline ;) It is the story of a made-redundant special forces-type agent named Bess & her charming neighbor, Cal. Who just happens to be one of the types of beings Tess used to take down. Of course there are bad apples in every bunch, just as there are good. Read and enjoy Bess & Cals story as they try to figure out who is harassing Cal. And possibly endangering Cal's beloved cat Murphy.

This started as your standard urban-fantasy romance with a twist. Bess is older than any other heroine I’ve come across in this genre. And, naturally, after a life of running after supernaturals, similar to Jade in The Lies of Vampires and Slayers, she’s quite bored with her retirement and the endless days it leaves her.

The story definitely had potential.
But the details never added up, and I never cared much about the characters. Bess was very insistent that she was powerful and capable and the super-fast, magical vampire would only slow her down. But then her narrative never quite matched up to her reality. Everything that actually happened contradicted her confident, capable beliefs. I mean, Bess was fired because she was old and slow. Then, she went about answering doors to vampires without weapons, and being scared when he used his supernatural speed. And, of course, tripping on rotten wood she knew was rotten. Not quite reactions that I’d expect from an in-shape, powerful monster hunter.
And, somehow, despite Callum proving his capability time and again, and every other detail that pointed to the fact that he could, at the very least help her, if not completely protect her from whatever danger there was, she continued to insist that he step back and she put herself in danger instead, because she was more capable.
Now, don’t get me wrong, I don’t mind weaker heroines either, and I would’ve also been fine if Bess was in denial of declining capability, or if she was haughty or overconfident or anything of the story. Anything that made sense, where I felt the feelings developed her character and were part of the overall story, rather than this, which just felt inconsistent.
She never explained herself, either. She just decided she knew the answer, then, wham, she was right, and only after she discovered she was right did I discover what her thought was (though, I didn’t always understand why she’d thought that).
Also, the beginning completely threw me. The dynamic was just plain weird. And then a few chapters in, it turned out there was a reason for it that, if given at the start, would’ve made all their interactions make a lot more sense right away.

So, I’d love to suggest this as an urban fantasy read for older readers, I’m just not sure it’s worth the read, when there are so many better alternatives. Yeah, so the heroines are a bit younger, but at least they prove themselves as capable as they think they are. I did like her age, though, and wish I would’ve enjoyed this more because of that. Can anyone recommend any other fantasy novels with older heroines?

Rating: 4 stars - It was really good

Bess Walker-James has been forced to retire from vampire hunting. She doesn’t know what to do with her life now and is struggling to cope. When she finds her neighbor's cat and realizes he is a vampire, she finds herself offering to keep him safe from his enemies.

“He cooked and cleaned, he sang to his cat, and he kissed like nobody’s business. Why did she feel like she was in trouble?”

This was a really great story, especially considering its only 97 pages long. Bess is a tough woman who has spent 40 years hunting vampires. She is 59 years old and doesn’t like that she was forced into retirement. Bess was a great heroine. I was instantly sucked into her story and her intense attraction to her vampire neighbor Callum. Callum was a fun character. He was completely different from any vampire Bess had dealt with and it really made her fall for him faster. Also, I loved that Callum was a cat person who actively sang and talked to his cat.

The enemy in this one was someone close to Callum. Even though this is a short book, the mystery of who was attacking him still felt completely fleshed out and well paced. This was a very unique world with vampires, demons, and shifters and I kind of hope Painter writes more books in this world now.

Overall, while this is a short story, it was a really good one and I highly recommend it if you like paranormal mysteries with older characters.

50-something Bess has been dismissed from her life-long career as monster hunter. Trying to figure out a way to keep busy after her active and adrenaline producing job is taken away is preoccupying all her thoughts as she settles into the family mansion she inherited on the Maine coast. A wandering Maine Coon cat wearing a tagged collar seems merely a small break in her day...until the owner arrives. A very attractive fellow who appears over 40 and happens to be a vampire, Cal, however, is a far cry from the vampires Bess used to hunt and asks her help as someone is trying to kill him.
Bess and Cal are great characters, attracted to each other and interesting in their own right. This novella hooked me and I want to know more, watch their relationship develop, and see what other trouble they can get into!

Well that was disappointing..

Starts off beautifully, drawing the reader into a great coastal location in Maine with an intriguing, older, paranormal female body guard and all around huntress of evil paranormal. A handsome vampire who lives nearby hires her after she’s been laid off for being “redundant” because he is being randomly attacked. Great setup, I was really looking forward to enjoying this story. Then it collapsed and ended. What was this supposed to be, a novella backstory for a series? Gees..very disappointed after that nice beginning.

Very short novella. At age 60, Bess isn’t ready to give up her career as a vampire hunter even though she is now officially retired. When she moves into a new place, she discovers a vampire named Cal who needs her help. This was set in Maine and had a vampire love interest I really liked and a Maine coon cat! I wished it had been longer so that there would have been more chance to flesh the story out because I loved all the Cal and Bess scenes. Hoping maybe this will become a series. 4/5 stars

A cute, lighthearted, but wonderfully written novella. Bess has been “put to pasture” bully her former employer and is not sure what she will do with her life now. Callum is a sexy, Irish vampire that loves his huge wolf cat. When the two meet sparks fly but it turns out Cal needs Bess for her skills.

Really enjoyed this quick read. Now I will dive into her PWF series First Fangs club since I am intrigued.

Charming cover. An easy-to-read paranormal story about Bess who has been made redundant by her demon hunting agency, simply due to her age. She has returned to her ancestral home in Maine, where it’s almost the winter season, to consider the next stage in her life. Then a big beautiful fluffy cat turns up unexpectedly, who turns out to belong to her neighbour, Callum. He needs her help with threatening letters. A captivating romance with a twist.

Cute. 3.5 stars

What I liked: the cat and what we saw of the characters.

What I didn’t like: the billionaire thing. And the fact that all the entire book seems to cover 24 hours and the relationship felt like instalove.

Will I continue the series? Not sure. So that’s a 3.5 for me.

a fun urban fantasy mystery

Being made redundant is never fun- but for Bess, a former vampire Hunter, it’s really not fun. Enter her supernatural neighbor, who’s being threatened, and life looks a lot more interesting. Enjoy this clever cozy paranormal mystery, with a bit of romance

In human years Bess has met her midlife crisis, her company has forced her to retire!

Trouble is Bess isn't human, and she isn't ready to retire! Still in her prime Code Name: Mockingbird is not planning to give up her monster killing skills for crocheting placemats! Lucky for her, she has a neighbor that just may keep things interesting!

Nice quick story

Not a full novel, seemed more like a novella that takes place in a day. The characters were fun but very incomplete. Maybe like just an introduction. I was slightly disappointed that the story came to an end rather quickly. I hope she's going to write more with these characters.

A fun read

A lovely, fun read. Bess is retired from her job with Arrow and is trying to decide what to do next when a cat, Murphy appears on her doorstep. His owner is a vampire and he thinks someone is out to kill him. I enjoyed this book, well there are cats in it, I like cats a lot. There is also a touch of romance too.

Loved it.

It has a little bit of an Agatha Christie vibe. Being a huge A C. fan, I'm wondering if a portion may have been inspired by The Folly. Also, I'm Irish and a huge cat lady. So, a lot for me to love. Plus, paranormal and a little romance.

Of course, I love ALL of Kristen Painter's books.

made redundant due to ageism, Bess finds a new case

It all starts when Bess pulls a lost cat inside the house for safekeeping. Then she calls the number on his collar. Turns out Cal, Murphy the cat’s owner, needs help. Someone is threatening him, and this well-behaved vampire isn’t sure what to do.
Great story. Can’t wait to read more.

Fun and entertaining short story / novella

I enjoyed this story a lot. The main female character is a fifty-nine year old former secret agent who can still kick ass when needed. The main male character is a slightly older sexy Irish man with a problem only she can solve. The story zipped along and the ending was satisfying.

Hoping to find a new purpose?

Could this be the start of something new? Bess is like a lot of people out of the job she loves because she's deemed too old. Could working for Cal be the answer? I definitely want to see where this can go.
