This book will be at the top of your new year's intention list. An intention is something you set your attention on that you want to manifest in your life or some sort of guiding principle that you want to live by. This book’s intention is all about having fun, being creative and creating memories with your kids whether they be your own, in a classroom, kids you babysit for, grandkids… There are a wide range of ecologically focused arts & crafts activities including gardening, games and cooking ideas. I especially love the month-by-month idea of connecting these activities to the seasons, which is why it makes a perfect gift for a teacher, but of course, the activities can be adapted and done at any time of the year. This book is awesome as it promotes nature and healthy living and the illustrations are bright, diverse and evoke a vintage appeal with their big doe-eyes. All of the activities are accessible and look so much fun. I wish this book had been around when my son was young as I know he would have loved to follow it the whole year long. Like many kids, he was always looking for something to do (or I was always looking for something for us to do together, or for something I could bring into his classroom) and this book provides a plethora of great ideas for activities to inspire creativity. This is an extremely clever and accessible book of year-round activities that I cannot stop looking at. Each two-page layout is full of happy kids engaged in activity, and all the tiny details are just so eye-catching. I really love the diverse cast of characters and sweet little faces. 100% awesome!

The concept of this book is that there's a nature activity for children to undertake every weekend throughout the year. The activities are divided into four sections covering the seasons, a clever idea as they relate to what can be found in nature during that time. So we have painting eggs and growing plants in spring, discovering insects and fun with leaf boats in the summer, making leaf mobiles and making nature memory jars in the autumn, and creating pine cone pals and perfect pomanders in the winter.

The activities are wide-ranging from arts and crafts to gardening, games and cooking and, as you'd expect from a book published in conjunction with the National Trust, there's a strong eco-theme. What's great is that many of these activities can be done at any time during the year and this book would be a godsend for parents who struggle thinking of things to do in the holidays. It introduces children to nature, the illustrations are bright and diverse, and all of the activities look so much fun. Fortunately I've got a couple of grandchildren I can use as an excuse to try out some of them myself!

THIS is What You can Do!

How many parents have ever heard these words, “I’m bored, what can I do?” Despite having lots of toys, movies, discs, and more, children can truly think there is nothing to do.

That is when the smart parent is ready, and has this book on hand. It is brimming with things for a child to do. Although it is geared for the weekends, many of these ideas can be used any day of the week it is.

Activities are divided into seasons. For instance, in the spring, learn to dye eggs, make carrot cake, or learn to do leaf rubbings.

In the summer, create a window box, make sandcastles, or paint a pet rock.

When fall arrives, learn to bake a dessert, make an obstacle course, or create a memory jar.

In the winter, make twig stars, create your own wrapping paper, or grow a flowering amaryllis bulb in a pot you decorated—to keep for yourself or as a thoughtful gift.

You will find all these ideas and more in this over-sized, hardbacked book. It is full of easy directions and colorful illustrations. Never again will you dread hearing a child say they don’t have anything to do. With your help, now they do. Children aged six to twelve-years-old will enjoy this five-star book.

Thank you, Nosy Crow, for providing Tickmenot with a book to review. Opinions are my own.

This book has activities for every weekend in the year dividing into sections by season. In the spring, you can make leaf rubbings, dye eggs, do yoga, bake a carrot cake, and plant seeds in your own garden. In the summer, you can make a fruit smoothie, plant pumpkins, make a sandcastle, create a picture frame, sail a leaf boat, or make a woodland crown from leaves and flowers. In the autumn, you can create little fairy homes, cook soup, make a leaf mobile, run an obstacle course, bake an apple crumble, and carve a pumpkin. In the winter, you can make a star from twigs, bake Christmas cookies, feed birds, design a yarn sweater for a tree, bake a chicken pie, go on a treasure hunt, or make a terrarium.

This book is full of so many fabulous ideas! Most of them use ordinary household items or cheap items, so it is easy to get started. Each activity has clear instructions and a list of what you need.

The illustrations are so cool! They show children doing each activity and having a marvelous time painting, creating, baking, and exploring. Each page is colorful and attractive.

SUNDAY FUNDAY is a collection of activities themed around each season, including cooking/baking, crafting, and ideas for play. For instance, it includes a recipe for a cozy soup, instructions for making a leaf mobile, and an outdoor obstacle course among other things.

What I loved: For children who are always looking for things to do, this book provides a lot of great ideas for activities or to inspire creative play. The breadth of activities is great, so even if some don't work out, there are plenty more to choose from. The book includes lists of the things children will need as well as some instructions for how to do them. Each page also includes colorful illustrations to bring them all to life and add to the fun of browsing for ideas.

Final verdict: A clever book of year-round activities, SUNDAY FUNDAY includes plenty of ideas for fun things children can do and inspire play and creativity. Recommend for elementary school aged children who are always looking for new ideas of things to do!

I was really excited for this book. The illustrations are beautiful and the idea behind the book is lovely and worthwhile.

However, I was left with the feeling that in reality this book is for upper middle class people who have time on their hands and want someone else to tell them what to do without needing to do even cursory research on their own.

9 (arguably 10) of the activities definitively assume you have a backyard and could not be done without one (of those perhaps 2 could be done with a balcony but not everyone has one of those either.) A further 10 are recipes which, while clearly thoughtfully curated, could just as easily be looked up and tailored better to your family's taste online. Several others are so basic one wonders who the book is written for (i.e. make a sand castle).

As someone with no yard who already cooks with my kids a lot and has sand castles covered I was left very disappointed.
