দেখা অদেখার গল্প আমাদের চেনা এবং অচেনা, দেখা এবং অদেখা পৃথিবীতে পরিভ্রমণের কিছু কাহিনির সংকলন। এসব গল্পে আছে কঠিন বাস্তব, বাস্তবের বিভ্রম, পরাবাস্তবের ইঙ্গিত। আমাদের চারদিকে বাস্তব যে চকখড়ির বৃত্ত এঁকে এর অনতিক্রম্যতা ঘোষণা করে, গল্পগুলিতে সেই বৃত্ত অস্পষ্ট হয়ে ক্রমশ হারিয়ে যায়। এক অর্থে এই চকখড়ির বৃত্তের ভেতরের ও বাইরের মানুষগুলিকে নিয়েই এর গল্পগুলি।

About the author

Syed Manzoorul Islam (18 January 1951 – 10 October 2025) was a Bangladeshi critic, writer, and a professor at the University of Dhaka. As a literary critic, he wrote criticism on writers including Michael Madhusudan Dutt, Kazi Nazrul Islam, Sudhindranath Dutta, Samar Sen, and Shamsur Rahman. He became the president of PEN Bangladesh in January 2018.

Islam won Ekushey Padak in 2018 in the language and literature category. Earlier, he received a Bangla Academy Literary Award in 1996, and his 2005 short stories collection Prem o Prarthanar Galpo was Prothom Alo's book of the year.

Islam was born in Sylhet to Syed Amirul Islam and Rabeya Khatun. He passed the entrance examination from Sylhet Government Pilot High School in 1966 and Intermediate examination from Sylhet MC College in 1968. He received his graduate and post-graduate degree from the University of Dhaka respectively in 1971 and 1972. Later he went to Canada and earned a PhD from Queen's University at Kingston in 1981 for his thesis on the influence of Emanuel Swedenborg’s philosophy in the poetry of W. B. Yeats. In 1989, he went to the University of Southern Mississippi at Hattiesburg as a Fulbright Scholar and taught there one semester. He retired from the faculty position at the University of Dhaka and joined University of Liberal Arts Bangladesh.

Islam died from complications of a heart attack on 10 October 2025, at the age of 74.

আমাদের ভেতরে বাস করা, কখনও ঘাপটি মেরে থাকা আবার কখনও সত্যিকারের ছায়ারূপে আবির্ভূত হওয়া, এরকম ছায়ার উপস্থিতি পাওয়া যায় অন্যপ্রকাশ থেকে প্রকাশিত ২০২২ বইমেলার সৈয়দ মনজুরুল ইসলামের গল্পগ্রন্থ ‘দেখা অদেখার গল্প’ বইতে।

বইয়ের একেকটি গল্প নিয়ে আলাপ করার আগে অনাবিস্কৃত ছায়া সম্পর্কে ধারণা দেয়া যায়। প্রথম গল্পটার নাম ‘ফুলি’। এক শব্দের নামে তেমন স্পষ্ট কিছুর আভাস নেই। কোন গ্রামীন কিশোরী মেয়ের নামও হতে পারে আবার ফুলি ট্রেইলার নামে কোন দর্জির দোকানও থাকতে পারে। গল্প আমাদের ধীরে ধীরে জানায়, ফুলি মুলত একটি গাভীর নাম। যে কিনা কিছুদিন আগে বাছুরকে হারিয়ে অবসাদগ্রস্থ হয়ে চোখ বুজে থাকে। গল্পের নায়ক ফজলু গাভীটিকে গোসল করাতে করাতে ভাবে, মানুষের মত গরুও আদতে অবসাদে ভোগে কিনা। ছোটবেলায় বেড়াতে যাবার সময় চলন্ত বাসের উপর পাহাড় ভেঙে পড়ার যে স্মৃতির ছায়া ফজলুকে তাড়িয়ে বেড়ায়, গরু আদতে কি চোখ বুজে নিজের বাছুরের সেই ছায়া দেখতে পায় কিনা, তা ফজলুকে বেশ ভাবিয়ে তোলে। খানিক সময়ের জন্য ফজলু নামক মানব আর ফুলি নামের গৃহপালিত গরুর মধ্যে সূক্ষ্ম এক স্মৃতির বন্ধন যখন তৈরি করা হয়েছে, তখন সেখানে তাকালে বোঝা যায় সেটি মুলত স্মৃতির একটি ছায়া। যেই ছায়াকে হয়তোবা আবিস্কার করা হয়নি এখনও। এমনকি গল্পের একদম শেষ দিকে, যখন সন্ত্রাসী ক্যাডারের ছত্রছায়ায় থেকেও সত্যি সত্যি পুলিশের মুখোমুখি হতে হয় ফজলুকে, তখনও পুলিশের বন্দুকের উঁচু করে রাখা নল আর ফজলু- এই দুয়ের মাঝে জেগে উঠে একটি গরু সদৃশ সত্যিকারের কিছু, যা মুলত ফুলির ছায়া ব্যতীত আর কিছুই নয়। ছায়াকে সঙ্গী করে ফেরা গল্প এই বইতে শুধু এটিই নয়।

তাহলে চলুন অনাবিস্কৃত ছায়ার আরেকটা গল্প বলা যাক। গল্পটার নাম ‘রঙিন দরজা’। খুব সাধারণ একটা জীবনের গল্প। সারাজীবন খেটেখুটে মানুষ করা ছেলে এখন আর খোঁজ নেয় না। কিংবা ছোট মেয়ের বাড়িতে পরিবার সমেত উপস্থিত হলে তারা রাগ করে। এরকম ‘না পাওয়া’ জীবন নিয়ে একটা ইলেক্ট্রিক দোকান চালিয়ে যায় মোকসেদ আলী। তার দোকানে কাজ করা বিপ্লব নামের ছেলেটা বেশ ভালো আঁকিয়ে। সন্ধ্যার পর মোকসেদ আলীর স্কুলের সময়কার বন্ধুরা আসে আড্ডা দিতে। জীবন নিয়ে তাদেরকে বড্ড হতাশ বলেই মনে হয়। গল্প এভাবে যে এগোচ্ছে, যা মোকসেদ আলীর আপাত দুঃখ নিয়ে গল্পটি আবর্তিত হচ্ছে বলে মনে হলেও, বিপ্লব নামের ছেলেটির আঁকাআঁকির দক্ষতা গল্পকে অন্য দিকে মোড় নেবার খানিকটা ইশারা থেকে যায়। খুব দ্রুতই গল্পের মুল ছায়ার আগমনের দৃশ্য এসে উপস্থিত হয়। দোকান ঝাড়-মোছ করার পর ভেতরের এক দরজার উপর বিপ্লব দারুণ কিছু আঁকে এবং ভাবে যে, হয়তোবা তাদের মালিক মোকসেদ আলী এটা দেখে ধমক দিতে পারেন। কিন্তু মোকসেদ আলী ধমক দেন না; বরং দরজার উপর আঁকা ছবির দিকে শুধু তাকিয়ে থাকেন। এমনকি বহুদিন ধরে শয্যাশায়ী স্ত্রী আলেয়াকে তিনি জানান, তার আর শুয়ে থাকতে হবে না; বরং তাকে হাত ধরে হাটিয়ে দেখতে নিয়ে যাবেন দোকান, যেখানের দরজার থেমে আছে কোন এক জীবনের জলচ্ছাস।

Living inside us, sometimes lying in ambush and sometimes appearing as a real shadow, the presence of such a shadow can be found in the book 'Dekha Odekhar Golpo' (See and unseen story) by Syed Manzurul Islam, a 2022 book fair published from another publication.

One can give an idea about the undiscovered shadow before discussing each and every story in the book. The name of the first story is 'Fuli'. There is no hint of such a thing in the name of a word. It could be the name of a rural teenage girl or it could be a tailor shop called Fully Trailer. The story slowly tells us, Fully is basically the name of a cow. He lost his calf a few days ago and became exhausted. Fazlu, the protagonist of the story, thinks of making the cow take a bath, whether the cow suffers from exhaustion like human beings. The shadow of the memory of the hill breaking on the moving bus while going for a walk as a child drives Fazlu away. When a subtle bond of memory has been formed between a human named Fazlu and a domesticated cow named Fuli for a while, then looking at it, it is understood that it is basically a shadow of memory. The shadow that may not have been discovered yet. Even at the very end of the story, when Fazlu is really confronted by the police in the shadow of a terrorist cadre, the barrel of the police rifle and Fazlu wake up between the two of them - something real like a cow, which is nothing but the shadow of a flower. The story of returning to the shadows is not the only one in this book.

So let's tell another story of the undiscovered shadow. The name of the story is 'Colorful Door'. A very simple life story. The boy who has been a man for the rest of his life is no longer looking for it. Or they get angry when the little girl comes to the house with the family. Moksed Ali runs an electric shop with such a 'not found' life. The boy named Biplob who worked in his shop drew very well. In the evening, Moksed Ali's school friends come to chat. They seem to be frustrated with life. As the story progresses, which seems to revolve around Moksed Ali's apparent sadness, the drawing skills of a boy named Biplob remain a hint of turning the story around. Very soon the scene of the arrival of the main shadow of the story appears. After sweeping the shop, Biplob draws something wonderful on an inner door and thinks that maybe their owner Moksed Ali can see it and threaten. But Moksed Ali does not threaten; Instead, just look at the picture on the door. He even told his longtime bedridden wife, Aleya, that he no longer had to lie down; Instead, take her by the hand and take her to the store, where there is a stream of life at the door.
