NYT Bestselling Author Carrie Ann Ryan continues the Montgomery Ink Legacy series with an emotional, friends-to-lovers romance where second chances begin with a promise.
I fell in love with the wrong man and learned the hard way to ask for help.
I don’t plan on falling again and have no intention of trying.
But when I get invited to a high-powered CEO retreat, I know I can’t say no.
And I can’t go alone.
When my frenemy, Nick, invites himself as my escort, I should walk away.
But there’s no stopping the connection we’ve both ignored for far too long.
Only Nick’s past is far darker than he lets the world know, and the shell he encased himself in is stronger than my own. And when the pain from my past comes back with a force, I’m afraid that walking away will be the only choice—even if it breaks us both.

If you love this author as I do, just settle in and let her take you on this ride. As we know most of the characters, this second-generation series is easy to get back into. Lake is driven and successful at everything but picking her last boyfriend. Now she needs a plus one, and Nick is available. She and Nick have known each other for a long time. Are they going to have a weekend, neither will forget? Strange things are happening; a business Lake is helping is vandalized, and then Legacy, who is causing this? Nick is there the whole time supporting her.
As these two realize they are attracted, the fears come into play. But together, they are better. As only the Montgomery clan, they band together, especially when one of their own is hurting.
Thank you to the Author for the advanced copy; this is my voluntary review.
I haven’t read any of the other Montgomery Ink books (and this is the second generation series, so there were a LOT of side characters), but I didn’t feel lost jumping into this one.
Lake (the FMC) is a high-powered CEO (but like a small town one…?) who just got out of an abusive relationship, and Nick is her business partner and frenemy who she asks to attend a CEO retreat as her plus one. Sparks fly.
I could nitpick at a lot of things in this book, but I won’t because it was so easy to like. It gave me good Netflix romance vibes (one step above Hallmark 🤣).
With how the last book ended I really wanted to read this one, to see what happened to Lake and how she dealt with things. I thought she was doing book, considering all things. I liked how she leaned on Nick when she needed help and how that weekend trip really changed things for them. Both of them really needed someone in their lives, yet both were too stubborn to really go for it and as much as they bickered, they were perfect for each other. I was glad that neither of them let their thoughts of "I'm not good enough" win. And as much as it about killed Nick, he had to let Lake go at times, to give her the space, if he wanted to win her in the long game.
I loved seeing how all of their friends and family acted when they learned about Nick and Lake dating and how the couple dealt with everyone coming at them. It was nice to see these 2 end in a happy spot, because someone else very much didn't, which broke my heart and has me wanting the next book right now.
Lake Montgomery is the epitome of Girl Boss, as a partner at Montgomery Ink Legacy as well as having her own business ventures, she is strong, independent, and driven. Her most recent relationship lasted longer than it should have, and has left her with some emotional scarring. Winning an award that means attending a prestigious retreat is an achievement she has been working for but she also doesn’t want to appear unattached in the primarily male dominated retreat setting.
Nick Gatlin has been attached to the Montgomery family since he was a teen, having been brought into the fold when he needed a safe place and some guidance. He has a fraught relationship with his mother that has left him feeling isolated and though he has always need made to feel welcome at the Montgomerys and they consider him one of their own, he has always felt like an outsider.
Both characters were holding onto pain from the past. What started as a way for Lake to feel more comfortable at her conference quickly had these frenemies contemplating if they could play nice for more than a weekend.
I loved these two together. Their early bickering was always laced with an edge of tension that pointed to the possibility of more if they looked a little deeper. Even though they disagreed and bickered often, Nick was at her side as soon as he knew there was a need.
The end of this book had my jaw on the floor, not because I didn’t think something was going to happen, but that it happened when and how it did. I love the way this Legacy series ties in the second generation with little visits from the original series characters. With as many Montgomerys as there are, it is nice to reset with this series with what feels like a smaller group of characters and I can’t wait to see what happens next for the family.
The Montgomery Ink Legacy Series is so well done. It is a second generation and with the glimpse at the past it has this feeling of realness. I found Lake and Nick to be genuine and likeable characters. I like that Lake was smart and not hiding it. She is proud of her accomplishments. Nick is not afraid of Lake’s success instead he wants to do all he can to support her and help her soar. The relationship between these two is complicated and so Nick has always loved Lake but their frenemies relationship has not allowed either to move forward. These two-spark chemistry on the page and really create a dynamic read. The banter and bickering between these two leads to so much heat and desire between them. Even with all the tension and desire between them there was never a question as to Nick’s feelings for Lake.
Carrie Ann Ryan has given us another great couple to fall in love with in AT FIRST MEET. Nick and Lake take us on a road with some twists and turns and an ending that will knock your legs right out from under you...so be prepared because it had me sobbing like a little baby.
Lake has recently gotten out of an abusive relationship and she is grateful that Nick was their the night she needed help but since then she finds herself avoiding him because she is embarrassed by it all but when she is invited to a "40 under 40" retreat that is given by Elite Magazine and she is only one of two women who was invited Nick decides that he will be her plus one and there is no way she can turn him down.
I loved the forced proximity aspect of this story because it was a "realistic" way for them to be pushed together so they can not only talk about what happened but also figure out somethings about their feelings for one another.
I really enjoyed Nick and Lake's story but man that ending KILLED me, I knew it was coming but that didn't matter one bit because the tears were in full force and didn't let up for a while. Let's just say that an upcoming book will most likely call for a box of tissues.
I would recommend this book to those that enjoy STEAMY Contemporary Romances, Friends to Lovers Romances, or Forced Proximity Romances.
I really liked Lake and Nick. They're good friends who also have a business together. They've never crossed that line. Until now. I liked the relationship these two had and how willing Nick was to help her. They looked out for each other and when Lake had things go very wrong, she wasn't alone. This book was fast paced and the narrators did a great job bringing them to life!
Another great story about the next generation of Montgomery’s. Lake is trying to put her life back together after a horrible situation. When she needs a plus one at a business event, Nick volunteers. They have an interesting relationship. They love to argue, but underneath all that is an undeniable chemistry. Once they light the fuse, there is no going back. When dangerous situations begin happening, they must figure out who is behind these acts. I absolutely adored Lake and Nick. They were both very against anything happening between them, but sometimes it is just meant to be.
At First Meet is book two in Carrie Ann Ryan’s Montgomery Ink Legacy series and Nick and Lake are everything! It has Frenemies to Lovers, Just One Bed, Tattooed Tortured hero (that’s a trope right?) and the snark we expect from the Montgomery clan!
Lake is moving on after an abusive relationship when she gets invited to an exclusive retreat with a plus one. Nick volunteers to go with her where There’s Only One Bed shenanigans ensue. Really these two have been getting under each others skin and dancing around their attraction forever! Nick has to deal with his family issues and Lake her wretched ex while they are trying to build their relationship.
I want to be Lake when I grow up. Strong, confident business woman but with a very soft underbelly. Nick, sigh, totally swoony in his brooding “I’m not good enough but I love her anyway” vibe. I Loved the guy bonding get togethers and seeing the past MIL characters.
Overall a perfect addition to the MIL family! And keep your tissues handy for the final chapter, even my cold heart shed a tear.
Thank you to the author for an advanced copy in exchange for an honest review. At First Meet has a publish date of February 27, 2023.
Lake is one hell of a girl boss. She gets invited to the 40 under 40 which is a HUGE deal only she needs a plus one and doesn't know who to take. She doesn't want to take any of her cousins, but she doesn't have a boyfriend either. Nick is more than happy to volunteer. Only Lake is wary because Nick saw her at her lowest and she doesn't want him to think badly of her.
But it wasn't just Lake who was holding on to the pain from the past Nick was too. Once they became a couple, they helped heal each other.
I liked the narrator switch to Oscar and Samantha I thought both did a great job.
That ending just about knocked me out! Just be prepared and have many tissues on hand. Now, Lake and Nick were too perfect together. Both, extremely cautious. Both, harbouring deep set, valid, fears. Both, struggling to imagine how they fit into their lives. Because of all this, it takes a bit to get them together, then a bit more to get them into a relationship. The saving grace for them is that they have known each other all their lives, so they have context and backgrounds on their side. Once they commit, they are better than peas and carrots together <3
Great frenemies to lovers story. Business partners and bickering friends finally address the attraction. Despite fears and insecurities from personal experience they still had that passion that connected them. I wanted more spice between Lake and Nick but I see Carrie Ann has a different direction on this series. Love her writing and stories always a must read she never disappoints.
Lake and Nick’s story was coming and we knew it. Some couples thrive on bickering and bucking heads. It’s what makes them tic. I’m glad Carrie Ann Ryan didn’t make them gooey and mushy because that would have been completely unreal for these two.
Oh my where to begin on this story… honestly there is just so much to say that it’s hard to know what to say about all the greatness. I knew when Carrie Ann told us we’d be blessed with this second generation of Montgomery’s that life was going to get crazy, but I never knew that it would be tearing my heart out even more than the originals did; she’s really outdone herself this time. For those that have been long-time Montgomery fans, it isn’t overly surprising that Lake and Nick’s story is a rocky one with a lot of pain and trauma to work through before they find their safe place to land in one another’s arms. Lake Montgomery is truly a powerhouse when it comes to her role as a kickass CEO and she is a role model for all young girls in that respect, but her personal life is a bit of a mess. When she is given a chance to go on in important business retreat she knows she needs a plus one, but taking her business partner and one of her best friends doesn’t occur to her. Nick Gatlin was practically raised by the Montgomery’s and has been around Leif and Lake his whole adult life, but she has always rubbed his the wrong way and that leaves them arguing most of their time together. When he finds out she needs backup on a retreat so she’d not flying solo in shark-infested waters, he volunteers in a moment of madness and they soon find themselves in truly unfamiliar waters. But soon their relationship turns to a very real and very sensual connection they have both denied and they have to accept the act that there has always been more there than just friendship, because if they don’t what they have built will be at risk. I truly enjoyed watching Nick and Lake circle one another until they finally decided it was time to stop and find their way into one another’s arms. Lake has had a rough time of in her personal relationships, but once she opens her heart up to the possibility off a love between herself and Nick her life becomes beautiful despite the outside forced trying to ruin things for her. She is such a great woman, with her brilliant mind, sweetness, sass, and willingness to help others I knew that I was going to love seeing into the dark and deep corners of her mind, despite knowing she has a lot of trauma to work through before she would be able to open herself to a new relationship. Nick is an interesting one, the kind of guy that you certainly take a second look at and wonder how deep his pain goes at the same time you wonder if you are actually strong enough to help him overcome his pain and heal. I was truly not surprised to learn that all the antagonism between these two was from them hiding their attraction and emotional connection for so long, and once Nick decided he’d had enough of hiding from Lake I loved seeing him go for it, all in, giving her exactly what she’d always wanted and needed in a man from the most unlikely source. The passion between them was beyond even by high expectations, but the sweetness and depth of their connection was what made tears come to my eyes repeatedly as they found their way to their HEA. There was laughter, drama, trauma overcome, and enemy beaten into the dust, and of course a great love for the ages all in a story of two longtime friends finding their love no longer covert. I am dying for the next stories (May’s and then Sebastian’s) though I know that Sebastian’s will be truly heartbreaking to read, but I know his story will be beautiful because he deserves it. Ryan’s couples are always perfect for each other in the most unexpected ways and each story has its own unique magic and ingredients to make them the perfect recipe for greatness—much like the perfect cheese soufflé.
Lake Montgomery, daughter of Liam and Arden Montgomery (WRAPPED IN INK). She was a was smart, beautiful and independent business woman in the tech world. She also helped women opening up their own businesses. She was one of her cousin Leif's partners in the Montgomery Ink Legacy shop.
She had a relationship that turned into a nightmare. The man she was dating did sme horrible things to her. She knew her cousin would help her but when she got to his house, he wasn't there instead she found his best-friend, partner and her frenemy, Nick.
Nick Gatlin has always had a crazy relationship with his best-friend's cousin. Lake got under his skin like no other person ever had. When he saw that she needed help, he was there for her. But then she started to avoid him which made him a wee angry cause no matter what he wanted to protect her.
When she got nominated for her accomplishments she wasn't so thrilled about going to the retreat alone. But then Nick made her an offer she couldn't refuse. They were both shocked by his proposal, too stubborn to back out now so they kept their words.
A familiar face from Nick's past came knocking at his door, he wasn't ready to see that person yet. But as things between him and Lake started to change, he realized that inspite of how he felt. There's always room for forgiveness.
I loved how his friends and the Montgomerys were there for him when Lake tried pushing him away. She too had to deal with her past, it didn't take her long to know that she needed Nick by her side. They both finally put all their cards on the table and knew that they were slways meant to be together.
The last chapter had me weeping. It was a treat to see one of my favorite couples make an appearance. I'm looking forward to what comes next .
AT FIRST MEET is the second book in Carrie Ann Ryan's MONTGOMERY INK LEGACY series. It was fun, intriguing and a must read. Carrie Ann Ryan left me wanting more. I give this one, Five Golden Stars.
****I received this book, without any obligation to review.****
My review is written after listening to the audio version of this book.
This time it's the turn of Nick and Lake to take us on an emotional rollercoaster ride with unexpected twists and turns, if you listened to the last book in this series you will know that it was Nick Lake turned to when her abusive boyfriend almost killed her. Since then Lake seems to studiously be avoiding being with Nick, even though they are partners of Montgomery Ink Legacy. But it's Nick she tells when she is invited to accept a prestigious award at a "40 Under 40" Award being held at Luxury Retreat, where she is one of only two recipients/invitees who are women. But Elite Magazine, the organisers of the Award/Retreat have included her significant other in the invitation. Nick, when he hears that she will be the only unaccompanied guest offers to be her plus one and of course, Lake accepts.
Upon arrival, it seems that the super efficient Lake had just assumed they would each have their own room, but at an event whIch has filled the recipients and their partners there is no room available for Nick and they are forced to share a room with only one bed. The forced proximity is good though as it forces them together and inevitably they not only talk about what happened but also admit the feelings they have both kept buried deep for one another.
I really enjoyed Nick and Lake's story, their journey was far from smooth as each has demons to face but in the end, everything for them personally worked out. But that in no way means that the ending to this book was a happy one, it isn't, I was left reeling and needing to sit down, audibly sobbing with big ugly tears rolling down my cheeks. I had to take a day after listening to be able to sit down and write this review, and even now the tears have returned.
The narration is performed by Samantha Cook and Oscar Reyes and is just perfect! They both bring the characters to life and express every emotion perfectly adding to my enjoyment of this wonderful book.
Lake Montgomery is a successful business woman who has just been nominated for a huge honor, but she needs a plus one to take along to her trip to the big city. That's where her brother's best friend and her sometimes enemy comes in to play, when thinking of a plus one Nick was never a candidate. But lucky for her he just made himself one... these two are about to have a weekend they'll never forget!
At First Meet is a beautifully penned frenemies to lovers story that is bound to have you smiling throughout. These two have a complicated relationship, one day they get along the next they can't stand one another, in all honesty I think it's just their way of four play. They tempt and torture each other every chance they get, getting close enough to fire each other up, and just when their close to giving in their hit with reality and jump two paces back. This weekend they are about to share forces them in closer proximity than they have ever been and pushes them to admit their feelings for one another. They try to fight their hearts and stick to their friends only relationship... but the heart wants what it wants!
I loved reuniting with the Montgomery Ink Legacy family, these characters are quickly becoming some of my all time favorite cast of characters, I absolutely love my visits with them. These two did not disappoint, they brought it all to the pages, more heat and emotion to the pages than my heart could handle. I cannot wait for the next installment and the chance to get better acquainted with these characters!! Highly recommend you get your hands on this one, Lake and Nick will keep you thoroughly entertained and leave you with an unshakable smile!!
I requested an advanced copy of this title from the publisher and I am voluntarily leaving my honest and unbiased opinion.
At First Meet is book 2 in the Montgomery Ink Legacy series by Carrie Ann Ryan’s. The story focuses on Nick and Lake who have been frenemies for years and secretly have liked each other for a long time too. It is only due to both of their baggage that they haven’t done anything but a work related retreat sees Nick and Lake thrown together where the sparks fly and enemies become more…if only someone from Lake’s past would take the hint and leave them alone!
Nick and Lake are great together, they both have a lot of baggage that they bring to their relationship as well as a vulnerability with each other. Nick is still reeling from the relationship he has with his mother and doesn’t feel like he quite fits with the Montgomery’s. The same can be said for Lake who made a mistake in a previous relationship which is haunting her, and her evil ex doesn’t seem to want to let her go. She’s scared when it comes to trying something new with Nick, especially as he speaks his mind and they seem to be opposites in all matters. Through it all though, both Nick and Lake don’t give up on each other and push each other to build a strong and lasting relationship.
This is another great addition to the series with two wonderfully strong characters. I love that other family members pop up and how close everyone is without being overbearing. There is a good bit of steam in this book and a twist at the end that I didn’t see coming. I can’t wait to read the next book in this series!
ARC received for a fair, honest and sometimes long review. All opinions are my own. 😊
At First Meet is the second installment of the Montgomery Ink Legacy series by Carrie Ann Ryan. As always, I recommend reading a series in order, however the majority of C.A.R books can be read as standalone.
The book kicks off with Lake, she is still learning about herself and what it means to be out of a crappy relationship. Lake is a Montgomery, it’s in her blood to fight for what she wants, but her last relationship lasted far longer than it should have and left her with more that just a few emotional booboos. When she learns that her hard work and struggles have finally payed off and she has won a fancy award, Lake is so proud of herself.
But why does it still feel like something is missing?
Nick has been involved with the Montgomery’s for what has felt like his entire life. His relationship with his own family has never been the best, and has left him with his own form of MUFD (messed up family drama). The Montgomery’s are family, even the ones that rub him the wrong way like Lake.
These two were just a hoot to read. The bickering, the stupid comments, it was like watching two teenagers learn that they really “like, like” one another, and in a way it was. Lake and Nick both know what emotional damage can do to a person, and while they may not be each other's favorite person, they don’t want to hurt one another either. When they finally open up to one another, and see what they have been missing. Well lets just say it was like a lightbulb moment for poor Nick.
As always with a C.A.R story there is love, laughter and family, everything you expect to find in a Montgomery book. Let’s see who’s next in the never ending line that is Montgomery!
This book is great, and I loved Lake and Nick. Both of these characters are surrounded by friends who have become family and I also liked Lake’s assistant Desiree. Lake is definitely a take charge no holds barred CEO (even though she doesn’t think she’s one) and is still dealing with the aftermath of her relationship with Zach and Nick is also dealing with an issue with his past, his mother. These two get along and then they don’t get along, they seem to have a friendship and are there for each other when something comes up. I did find it interesting when Lake brought up the Elite 40 Under 40 Retreat and the plus one came up and Nick offered to accompany her, that was sort of out of the blue for him. The retreat was definitely a turning point for these two and who knew what would happen after the weekend, were they in a relationship or what were we calling this. It was nice to see them together but Lake was still being harassed by her ex and Nick’s past, his mother, was also showing up. I’m glad these two decided to try to date and have a relationship and I appreciated the ribbing they were receiving from others in the family, exactly as it should be and I think that meant a lot to Nick. He’s been part of the family but now he’s really a part of the family. I also loved when Arden and Liam were a part of the conversation, they are two of my favorite Montgomery characters. I liked the ending with Lake and Nick and I’m curious to see where these two end up. The other part of the story that happened at the end of the book is just I don’t even know what to say, it was just too much and I definitely wasn’t expecting that.
Two broken people finding love where they least expect it.
Lake Montgomery is a fierce and independent woman. A partner in Montgomery Ink Legacy, a tech genius, a successful businesswoman, and a seasoned philanthropist, she is the ultimate boss. Unfortunately, this boss is looking for a date after a big event requires a plus-one for her awards ceremony.
Cue Nick Gatlin. Nick is the best friend of Lake's cousin and business partner. He is also a thorn in Lake's side. When he offers to be Lake's date at the retreat, could the banter between these two turn into something more?
I love this couple. Their flirty bickering makes me smirk, and I am always down for a little one-bed-trope action. I love the arc of two people with a lot of emotional baggage finding closure and love. There is a lot of angst wonderfully blended with humor and romance.
I have to say that Lake stole the show for me. Her confidence and strength are inspiring, and she just owned every page she is in.
This book can be read as a standalone, but it does bring in a lot of past and current characters in the elaborate Montgomery Family book universe.
** I am voluntarily reviewing an advance copy of this book. Thank you to Carrie Ann Ryan and Give Me Books PR for providing an ARC. **
Lake Montgomery is a smart, independent, business savy woman. But she found herself where so many others have ... in a relatioship with a monster who took his time to slowly reveal that side of him. After a disasterous ending to the relationship, Lake has sworn off men. She's working on healing ... both physically and mentally and has no desire to date. But fate has other plans for Lake.
Nick Gatlin is best friends with Lake's cousin Liam. He's also a partner with Lake and Liam in their branch of the Montgomery Ink tattoo shops. Nick and Lake have been frenemies for a very long time. They snip and snipe at each other constantly. But Nick was the one who was there when Lake finally broke and asked for help.
When Lake receives an invitation to a business retreat, she knows she can't go alone. She's not sure what she'll do about the whole thing until Nick steps up and basically invites himself along for the weekend. Needless to say, the tension these two have been feeling for ages boils over and they become more than friends.
Neither are sure where they're going and if it'll last, but fate has a plan. And when the past tries to get in the way, these two find a way to get past their walls and head for a bright future.
This is a steamy and spicy friends to lovers to more romance. It is the second book in the Montgomery Ink Legacy series, which is a spin off of the Montgomery Ink series. However, you do NOT have to have read any of the other books to read this one. It stands completely on it's own. I absolutely do recommend reading the others tho because the entire Montgomery family is awesome and amazing.
This second installment in this series was a pretty good, quick read that I managed to finish in one sitting. This was a frenemies to lovers read that was a long time in the making for Nick and Lake.
Lake, successful and happy to help others with their dreams is fresh out of an abusive relationship when she is invited to a retreat that makes her take a plus one. She decides that she will take Nick, her longtime friend/business partner and person that she spends a lot of time arguing with, only to discover that there is one bed in the suite. One thing leads to another after the pair have been in close proximity for a few days and they act on their chemistry and then later decide to pursue a relationship with each other.
Nick, longtime friend of the Montgomery family, is slightly damaged from the tragedies of his upbringing. He is protective of Lake and has hidden his feelings for her despite always finding himself arguing with her.
This pair had a few bumps in the road to their HEA but the story was pretty good - a little predictable at times but overall pretty good. The only thing with this story (or series) is that the characters always find themselves in danger - like life threatening danger instead of having normal relationship problems such as location, unexpected change, etc. I did like the return of the characters from the previous books and series and I do look forward to seeing what is in store for this series next especially from the teaser from the end of this book.
Overall, this was a quick read that I would recommend to others.
I loved this story! It was great getting to see Lake and Nick come together and figure things out. We got a hint at the end of the first book that there was more between Lake and Nick and that Lake was going through something horrible but you do not need to have read that book before this one. This reads as a standalone book though as the families are so close it is always great/bonus if you have read other books within the Montgomery world as you will recognize characters. This story picks up sometime after the first book so we get to see Lake after she has started to heal from her last relationship that turned abusive though he is still a presence that she is dealing. Nick's past is creeping in as well and it's something he doesn't want to deal with. Lake gets invited to a retreat and needs a plus one but isn't sure how to handle that and Nick ends up offering to go with her to help her out and it finally gives them a situation that allows certain things to come to light. I loved watching these two come together and build their solid relationship with their foundation of years of friendship. I loved watching Nick give Lake what she needed in certain situations because he knew her so well. This story pulls you in from beginning to end and was so very easy to read. It flowed very smoothly and had plenty going on. The last chapter that sets up the next book absolutely broke my heart though. I need the next book! I loved Lake and Nick and am super excited for what's coming next. I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book.
Lake Montgomery always feels like she has something to prove even when she has been wildly successful. A past relationship has left her doubting herself and her instincts. Nick Gatlin has been part of Lake’s life for a long time and even though they bicker with each other constantly, he is always there when she needs him. Even if it is a stand-in boyfriend for a business retreat. When the tension between the two can no longer be ignored, they both must confront their past to move forward. I like that Lake is the one with the power so to speak in this relationship. She is working hard to change the world and Nick is very supportive of that. These two have been friends/enemies for quite some time so we do not see that get to know you stage of the relationship. They know a lot about each other already but really find the full support and encouragement that they were afraid to give into before. Nick comes off a bit pessimistic but he just wants to be the one to care for Lake as she cares for the world. There was outside drama that directly affected each of these characters and therefore their relationship. These two have a very mature relationship but realize that they need to figure some things out to have a clear future together. I would have liked to see a bit more of them dealing with their problems together but at the same time it is what worked for them. We get a lead into Sebastian’s book at the end and it is heartbreaking. However, the hope for a future HEA is what will keep us coming back.
Friends to lovers!! What a great story…I have such a soft spot for the Montgomery family.. to read about the next generation is just awesome and allows to see how the families making their lives work together.
Nick is a loner of sorts, he feels like he didn’t belong even though he an Leif are best friends! He works hard, is loyal but struggles with his upbringing.
Lake is take no holds bar type of women, strong, resilient and powerful in the way she runs her businesses! She’s is always puts others first and cares deeply. But also feels that she is on the outer and that she needs to prove herself. Lake has a traumatic past that makes her feel unworthy…
On a conference that they find themselves going together, they allow their true feelings for each other surface and they become a couple…but it’s not smooth sailing. I love that Nick was able to step back and give Lake the space she needed. He was her strength and protector. I loved that lake was able to reassure Nick that he was enough and really got him to see that.
The boys nights had me in stitches and showed what brotherhood is truly about! Then Nick and his mum opening up to each was just beautiful.
Throw in an ex boyfriend who is hellbent on causing havoc and an ending that was unexpected and heartbreaking and you have a story that takes you on a journey from start to finish! I was. Given an ARC and this is an honest review. Thank you Carrie Anne

Nick was there for Lake when she needed him the most but has avoided him since because she is embarrassed that he saw her at her weakest moment. Lake has been concentrating on her businesses and being a great CEO who uses her influence, connections, and money to help other women start their own businesses. Lake is only 1 of 2 women invited to an all important retreat and knows she must take a plus one. Nick surprises himself and Lake when he offers to go to the retreat with Lake. Nick is a talented tattoo artist and part owner of Montgomery Ink Legacy with Leif, Lake, and Sebastian. Nick grew up with Leif and the other Montgomerys after his father died and his mother couldn't cope with her grief. Nick and Lake give into their attraction while away on the retreat. Will Lake's ex put her present at risk? Will Nick face his past when his mother shows up? Will Nick and Lake profess their love and give their relationship a real chance? I loved At First Meet by Carrie Ann Ryan! Nick and Lake have amazing chemistry that is fueled by their bickering. Nick and Lake are a great couple with strong personalities that complement each other. At First Meet is an emotional roller coaster ride with an ending that had this reader in shock. I would highly recommend getting At First Meet and the other book in the Montgomery Ink Legacy series by Carrie Ann Ryan. I received an ARC copy of this book, and I am voluntarily leaving my honest review.
I tend to be leery of second generation books as I often find it too much of a recap or update on the original family, with less storyline devoted to the current generation. With the Montgomery Ink families being so large I wasn’t confident that I wouldn’t be the case with the Legacy series. However, I had heard good things about Bittersweet Promises so I decided to give At First Meet the benefit of the doubt. I am so glad that I did. First, I absolutely love Lake. She is a badass boss babe with a messy past that she is not letting stand in her way. Nick witnessed Lake’s past and understands her vulnerabilities. He never lets Lake feel like that vulnerability is a weakness, and instead helps her see how strong she really is. Second, there were enough relevant details included about the family connections to know who was who, without the text feeling like a family tree listing “child of so and so” etc. (Carrie Ann Ryan does have a family tree on her website if you want to know that information). Third, I love that Carrie Ann uses the final chapter to introduce the plot of the next book, rather than epilogue equals HEA, but woah did this one throw me. Without giving away any spoilers, this incident hit very close to home for me, but it was beautifully written and I will be reading the next in the series.
Lake Montgomery is an extremely successful women. At a young age she invented and patented a piece of technology that has made her a multi-millionaire. She has used her success to help in the advancement of other women hoping to start their own businesses. Every year Elite magazine elects to honor forty CEO's with being one of their '40 under 40'. Lake is awarded with this recognition and is fully aware that this opportunity is only given to one to two women every year. The CEO retreat will take place at an elegant five star hotel in upstate New York with one major problem, she is expected to bring a guest and Lake is currently single.
Nick Gatlin shares an equal partnership in Montgomery Ink Legacy. He is a talented tattoo artist who has worked hard for everything he has in life. When he was a young boy his firefighter father was killed working a fire. His mother could not cope with this death, leaving her son isolated and deserted. Because of this, Nick practically grew up with the Montgomery family and considers his best friend Leif Montgomery more like a brother.
Nick's relationship with Lake has always been cantankerous. They are not quite friends but they are not quite enemies, you could consider them frenemies. They fight like cats and dogs. If Lake and Nick are being honest with themselves all this back and forth is just a weird sort of foreplay. When Nick discovers Lake needs a plus one for her 40 over 40 retreat he volunteers himself.
Nick is on occasion awkward but always sexy as all get out. Lake has a beautiful soul and an extremely strong character considering all she has endured in life. I enjoyed getting to know both characters and being witness to their struggle to maintain their wonderful friendship while building something more. I love that they are friends who are there for one another regardless of what is happening and yet secure enough in their friendship to disagree and debate items they don't see eye to eye on. It certainly built up a lot of sexual tension. I love that the Montgomery's are such a close family while at the same time the best of friends. This includes friends who become more. They become part of the family. Those not born with the Montgomery name are made to feel and truly believe they are one of them. I love that about these characters.
All of Carrie Ann Ryan's books can be read as stand alone stories but I am so excited to learn more about the close circle of friends mentioned in the Montgomery Ink Legacy series.
I was provided an Advanced Reader Copy and am voluntarily providing an honest review.
