While this book was packed with humorous verses about school-related situations, complications, and relations, I found that the poems were all very similar in style; multiple stanzas with a great deal of rhyming, which wouldn't make for a very useful mentor text for teaching students types of poems and that not all poetry must rhyme. Students in first through fourth grade will enjoy the topics of the poetry though, and will laugh at poems such as "Revenge of the Lunch Ladies" (title poem) and "W ...more

Revenge of the Lunch Ladies, by Ken Nesbitt
Recommended age: 6+

Revenge of the Lunch Ladies is a book of 45 school poems. The poems follow the themes that happen at school. The subjects are how teachers celebrate the end of school, a science project that eats a dog, complaints about cafeteria food and the boy who didn't tie his shoes. I just loved this book and what stuck out to me is the humor in the poem. The boom even has a poem about a kid dreaming of school supplies. This is a great book to d

This book offers a series of poems of funny things that lunch ladies talk about. One of the poems is about what lunch ladies do to young children who always complain about cafeteria food the ladies cook. This book of poetry is very fun and exciting for children. All children know what and who the cafeteria ladies are in their school, and reading poems about what they think about and talk about is hilarious. I would present this book to kindergarteners or first graders and then allow them to do s ...more

Nesbitt takes on poems about school in this volume. There's a great poem about a principal who skips school for a day. And of course the title poem describes what the lunch ladies do to get back at kids who complain about the cafeteria food. Anyone who's ever been to elementary school will relate to these raucous, silly poems.

This book is full hilarious poetry for all students and one of them MY SENSES ARE ALL BACKWARD is a good one for teaching about senses and what it feels like when we experience pain in any one of them.Students can use the ideas in this poetry to write their own poems about individual senses and their importance in their bodies.
