Courting Chaos #6

Ruby's Choice

Rate this book
Twenty-year-old Ruby Gale has a secret. After all, unmarried women in 1895 can't be too careful. Especially when it comes to matters of business—not to mention the human heart.

After the untimely deaths of their parents at a young age, Ruby is grateful for her older brother Simon, a prominent attorney in the small town of Divine, CO, for caring for her during her formative years. However, now that she's reached 20 years of age and is looking towards marriage, Ruby wishes he could see her as the woman she's become instead of the child she once was. Eager to take on the responsibilities of adulthood, Ruby agrees to invest in a greeting card business with several of the other ladies she knows in town.

Valentine’ Day is just around the corner, so the timing couldn’t be better. However, because some of the married ladies suspect their husbands may not welcome the idea of their wives working, it’s decided that the card-marking activity will take place under the guise of tea parties to avoid suspicion.

The talk amongst the unwed members of the group—including Ruby—soon turns to prospective beaus and secret crushes and suddenly unsigned valentines begin showing up in the hands of the most eligible bachelors all over town. Rumors and speculations abound, and everyone thinks they know who’s sweet on who. Suddenly, Ruby not only has to sort out the identities of the secret admirers, but also answer the question of which man to give her own heart—and why.

Ruby's Choice by Annee Jones
Ruby's Choice is a sweet Christian historical romance with a Valentine's Day theme! Find out who the "Mother of Valentine's Day" was and other fun facts when you read this endearing love story!!

This is Ruby Gale and Hart's story.
She was late. Quickly, Ruby finished stacking the last of the freshly scrubbed and dried dishes from the mid-day meal in the cupboard and rushed to get her coat, giving thanks the snow had finally melted enough to venture out of the house.
As she hurried from the kitchen into the parlor, the gray cloud cover that had lain over the valley of Divine for the entire month of December finally broke and the sun appeared, framed by the delicate lace curtains that dressed the large bay window.
Bright golden rays streamed across her path, and she couldn’t help but smile.
The sunshine was definitely a welcome sight and hopefully a sign of good things to come in the new year as well.
Unlike my brother, Hart talked to me about serious topics somehow our conversation just turned to them naturally.
I didn’t feel he was asking anything inappropriate, just so you know – and he seemed impressed when I shared my thoughts and opinions.
Simon never pays attention to anything I say. It was such a nice feeling. I also found the things that Hart was sharing to be very insightful.
He was a true gentleman and walked me the rest of the way home since dusk was falling.
Ruby's Choice by Annee Jones is a wonderful well written 5 star book.
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book.
I am looking forward to reading more books by Annee Jones.

Unfortunately, the chaos in this book was more of the author's writing style than in the courting.
I will admit that this story is unique from the other books in this series in that there aren't just 3 love interests for the heroine. Ruby's friends and brother and acquaintances are all thinking about love.
But....
The author bogs the plot down with an abundance of irrelevant information, such as much detail over the death of her parents years ago, the siblings finally talking about the situation and how they grieve, long descriptive passages about the clothes people were wearing as well as the food prepared and eaten, at least 3 full poems quoted in the book, an extremely long and boring letter written to a cousin we never meet, not to mention the 12 pages of facts at the end of the book!
I found the bulk of the book was taken up with this background information and a bit of set-up with her new business endeavor, but then the romance all felt rushed and there was zero actual courting! When the opening page contained a giant list of each character and their age, I should have guessed it wasn't going to be my cup of tea.
I can't recommend this. Which is odd because this author wrote "Dalton's Dual Brides" in the Matchmaker's Mix-Up series and it was so good.

Ruby's Choice is set in Divine, Colorado in 1895 and the world is changing. An inspiring Valentine read. This avid reader enjoys researching holiday and reading holiday stories featuring historical women, who champion for Woman's rights. Will the men in Divine let women work for pay? Will Simon realize that his sister, Ruby is a grown woman capable of making her own life choices? Hart is a reporter for a newspaper, who states: Behind every story - no matter how sensational - are real people. And they deserve our respect as well as compassion. Thank you Annee Jones for the informative Appendix: Fun Facts About Valentine's Day, a well crafted story with inspiring characters, twist and turn plot, and believable resolution. Orphaned Ruby, raised by her older brother, did learn an important lesson from her mother: The brightness of a simple smile could shine longer and further than any light. Ruby's Choice made me smile.

A charming tale of the West.

The people who are in it were very interesting and remarkable. I loved that while there are issues along the way, some ups and downs, it's not too down in the dumps, it's more inspirational and beautiful to read.

Thank you Annee for the enjoyable time while reading this, I look forward to reading more.

Christian Romance always gives such hope. At times sweet and innocent and naïve, but in a great learning way while staying clean.
Ruby was my favorite part, she was endearing and honest and really captivated me. I loved her journey and how we saw the world through her eyes.
Ultimately you will come out with a feeling of hope and faith.

I felt the book was hard to get into at the beginning, but as the story progressed it was hard to put down. It was a great story, perfect for those who like historical romance. And it was a quick read. I received a copy of this book but all opinions are my own.

sweet

This was a sweet little romance with a nod to Shakespeare’s Midsummer Night’s Dream. A short, fun, clean read that left me with a smile!
